What to expect in the Yoga In Sri Lanka episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast
Serena Burgess came to yoga while living in the UK at the Shivanada ashram there. After receiving her certification, she moved back home to Sri Lanka where she opened her own yoga studio, The Om Space, in Colombo. While the pandemic caused the studio to shut down, Serena expressed nothing but gratitude for the shift of her energy and intention.
Burgess's practice of yoga also intersects with activism. She became involved in the Aragalya struggle, which was a people's uprising in Sri Lanka. Burgess’s involvement in activism started when she began feeling that something was not right in the world, starting with the separation of children at the borders in the US. She feels that a lot of people are living with a slight feeling that things are not quite right due to the economic crisis and other issues affecting the world. Yoga has helped her engage in the generative story and see the good things that are happening in the world.
Serena Burgess believes that these ancient tools can be utilized in our modern world to face the challenges we come across. Serena has also formulated a workshop called Conscious Courage, which is aimed at allowing people some space and time to figure out how they would like to show up in the world. Serena believes that yoga is not just about practicing asanas but can be integrated into daily life. After all, it’s all yoga!

My conversation with Nathalie Bittar, a yoga teacher and the first yoga studio owner from Sudan, was enthralling as we took a deep dive into yoga as a complementary practice, not a competitive practice to religion. I hope that this conversation expanded your perception of how yoga can be a space for community, trust, and safety and how yoga can help you individually, and a community as a whole, shed defenses, shed armor, and help trauma to move through. What to expect in the Yoga In Sudan episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast
Nathalie was working and living in New York City when 9/11 happened. In fact, she worked in the towers. Not the ones that fell— the one across the street. She had just begun practicing yoga that same year, and kept going to practice throughout that time of enormous trauma and turmoil. Yet, as the practice healed her, it still felt like a mystery.
That led Nathalie to do her first yoga teacher training, and she decided to move back to Sudan to open the first yoga studio in her country in 2008. We talked about what it was like for her to open the first yoga studio in Sudan, and if there was any pushback. She expressed fears about the police shutting it down or disturbing the classes, but fortunately, that never happened. We also talked about what a difficult time it has been in the last few years for Sudan, with overthrowing the government in April 2019 and just over 2 years later a military coup taking place in October 2021. Nathalie shared with us how has yoga helped her community during this time of turmoil.
As Nathalie leads yoga retreats not just in Sudan, but worldwide, we also delved into what advice she has to offer to yoga teachers who are one day hoping of leading yoga retreats themselves. As Nathalie conveyed, always have a plan and always have an eraser!
This was a beautiful conversation about trauma, safety, trust, shedding defenses, and how healing can happen on and off the mat, in and outside of the studio, all with, through, and by… yoga!

Sten Kadji opened the first yoga studio in Cameroon, Studio Ark Yoga, at the end of 2019. While he began practicing yoga in 2015, he received his yoga teacher training certification with the Africa Yoga Project in Kenya, and was actually in the same graduating class as Rama Saeed from Ghana, a previous guest on the Wild Yoga Tribe podcast. Sten teaches various types of meditations and Power Vinyasa Yoga at his studio in Douala, Cameroon.
What to expect in the Yoga In Cameroon episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast
While Sten Kadji is from Cameroon, he first came to yoga while attending university in Florida. Upon returning to Cameroon, he knew he wanted to bring all that he had learned to his community. He sought out a yoga teacher training with the Africa Yoga Project in Kenya, and opened the first studio in Cameroon shortly after in his mother’s art gallery. As Sten says, “It was a no-brainer how art and yoga associate.”
Our conversation veered off into many beautiful directions, including how Sten defines yoga, the gifts that yoga has given him, and all that yoga has brought into his life. His mother lost her battle with cancer a few years ago, and Sten credits yoga for helping him to heal.
It was fascinating to hear how being the first yoga studio in Cameroon has given required him to shoulder more responsibilities surrounding yoga. As Sten says, “In Cameroon, we do have a lot of preconceived ideas that people who associate yoga to religious affiliation or sometimes it's very mystified and we take a lot of pride in dismantling these ideas or these myths around yoga. Through practices like meditation and breath work and even different workshops like around the yamas and niyamas and different philosophy around the practice, we try to share with our community around us.”

What to expect in the Yoga In Guatemala episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast
Chacal Lobos is a storyteller. Specifically, he shared two beautiful parables with us, one of the first female monk and another of children rowing a boat during the nighttime. Carlos is a storyteller— and someone who got me to tell a story of my own on the show.
Carlos is passionate about the ancestral practices of yoga, and of Guatemala. He shared with us how immensely beautiful his culture’s ancient practices are — and how the day that we recorded, was actually a special day for such a conversation to take place. Every day has a different energy, according to the Mayan calendars, so he told us about how he lives his life connected with that path and with daily rituals of Mayan Cosmology, connecting with the ancestral and the divine.
Carlos conveyed that, ancestral practices never die. By practicing yourself, you help it to never die. As Carlos says, “Yoga has an essence and we are just translators.”
Carlos views yoga not as a science, not as an art, but as a discipline. While this word may carry certain connotations, Chacal shared with us the root is discs, which means the openness to learn.” Tribu Ashtanga is a community that is both “open and empty” to follow the path of ashtanga yoga.

“I feel that every person that is in the yoga practice has a rebel heart. Because mostly society is like teaching us to look outside. For the people who are in this, like you, they made the decision to look inside instead of looking outside as a rebel act. I think we're in the same line."

Heran Tadesse is a yoga teacher from Ethiopia who has been teaching yoga for 9 years in several studios in the capital city of Addis Ababa. She teaches prenatal/postnatal yoga, and is a mother herself. As a student, she started off with Hatha Yoga. She was trained in Kemetic Yoga in Egypt and Afrikan Yoga in Kenya.
What to expect in the Yoga In Ethiopia episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast
Heran was adopted from Ethiopia as a baby, and was raised in the Netherlands. She studied tropical forestry in University, and first came to yoga at that time in her life. She practiced and attended classes for 10 years before attending a yoga teacher training in Belgium. After receiving a job offer in Addis Ababa, she returned to Ethiopia. She works in the educational sector and teaches yoga in multiple studios.
Heran then took us on a deep dive of what Kemetic Yoga, which has it’s roots in ancient Egypt which pre-dates yoga in India, though it is no longer a living part of Egyptian culture. It’s about reconnecting with the ancestors, and is modeled after the hieroglyphics. It’s akin to Iyengar yoga, with strict, static poses.
Afrikan yoga was founded by a man from Jamaica who is based out of Kenya. This style draws upon movements that people make, in the whole Nile Valley. This could be movements that fishermen make, or women who are grinding wheat. There are series of movements, with a lot more flow and, in fact, dance. There is a huge focus on relating to the elements.
Heran also walked us through all the diversity and beauty of her country, and about the history of yoga in Ethiopia and where she sees yoga going into the future. As there are only 20 yoga teachers, approximately, in her country— and as she is the most experienced practitioner in her country, she is often stopped on the street and people shout “yoga!” At her. The whole city knows her as the yoga teacher.

Moreover, Alina studied psychology education in University, and completed a degree at the Institute of Physical Culture and Sports as well.
What to expect in the Yoga In Moldova episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast
Alina came to yoga when she was just 9 years old. There were kids yoga classes offered at the school across the street from Alina's house. It’s the longest relationship to anything Alina has had that has stretched all the way until today. She feels like it was a sign from the universe that she was supposed to be involved with yoga.
She actually started teaching yoga when she was only 15 years old. She started teaching yoga at the kids yoga studio, and offered kids yoga classes. At age 18 years old, she realized there was nothing better than yoga, and she was given an adult group to begin teaching. She’s been going through different trainings and seminars in yoga in Moldova, Romania, and Ukraine.
In regards to yoga in Moldova, Alina feels that it is “just the beginning.” She has her own studio, and she works with a lot of people who worries that yoga is boring or just sitting in meditation. There are a lot of people in Moldova who have a lot of preconceptions about yoga, and Alina is working to break those stereotypes down.
At Alina’s studio, every day there are about 8 brand-new students who show up for their very first yoga class. I asked Alina, why does she think that new people come for their first yoga, she said it is because they are in pain or there is a problem with something in their lives. There has been a growing awareness in Moldova that yoga can help with physical pain.

What to expect in the Yoga In Indonesia episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast
Rocky Ryu and I shared a beautiful conversation about yoga in Indonesia. We started off the conversation discussing how yoga first came into his life - as he witnessed yoga taking place through windows, until he one day decided to join.
Over twenty-five years ago, there wasn't a lot of yoga going on in Indonesia. Though, this was personally very hard for me to imagine! Rocky built his own yoga studio, Mallika Yoga, and has been guiding students towards health and wellness through incorporating not just yoga asana, but massage, body work, breath work and more. He has even developed the RM method, which is an act of true union, as it marries together everything Rocky has learned from various healing modalities.
You’ll love hearing birdsong in the background, and Rocky’s kind laughter and gentle energy. As he says, “Only with gratitude can we be satisfied and happy in life.”

“Yoga is more than the body. With asana poses it even can heal traumatic experiences that are long stored in the body, such as fear, abuse, and broken heartedness. So just not just physical, but it's more than that.”

Ros Langer has been studying and practicing yoga for over 15 years. Ashtanga vinyasa yoga remains her central reference and informs all of her teachings. According to Ros, “the mat is just the beginning.” She teaches yoga at Energie in English Harbour, Antigua. Ros's main residence is in Antigua but she spends a few months of the year in Cape Town, South Africa. She is the mother of two young men who continually inspire her to rise to her fullest potential.
What to expect in the Yoga In Antigua episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast
Ros Langer was first introduced to yoga through a friend, who had a yoga teacher come to Antigua to teach her and train her in yoga. Ros bought a John Scott Ashtanga DVD, and after practicing for a few years she moved to Capetown, which Ros calls the Rishikesh of South Africa. She was trained in Capetown and was delighted to be able to teach at The Shala in Capetown, which she deems one of the best yoga studios in the world.
We also talked about how Ros’s practice changed through menopause, surgery, and generally as she has gotten older. Ros came to yoga at 45, and was trained at age 50, she shared with us what happened with her practice over the years, and with a cancer scare and after surgery.
Asana is not an exercise. This is something Ros firmly stands behind, and it was great to talk to her more about her thoughts on it. That being said, she thinks it’s completely fine if people want to come to the yoga practice for the sake of exercise. Come and be welcome!

While yoga in Nicaragua has gotten more and more popular over the years, when Vanessa opened her yoga studio in 2007, she was the only yoga studio around for miles and miles. While there was a mother and daughter yoga teacher duo, whom she practiced yoga with and learned from, they were nomadic. And Vanessa was there to stay.
Vanessa is proud to serve Nicaragua, not just as a yoga teacher and studio owner, but also as a member of the community who actively gives back and takes what the yoga studio earns and does her best to give it back to the community.
Some of my favorite moments in the conversation were when Vanessa spoke about imposter syndrome and yoga, and about how we all have to honor the light and dark side that are inside of each of us. Yoga is a journey of becoming who we are, and we are not all just light, bright, fun, and easy all the time. We must embrace and accept all aspects of ourselves.

It was actually a friend of hers who recommended she do a yoga teacher training in South Africa. She was incredibly grateful to find a yoga teacher training in Africa, as she was worried she would have had to travel to India or Bali to do a training.
Tell me more about Seitebatso Kabi
Seitebatso Kabi is a yoga teacher and yoga studio owner from Lesotho. She received her yoga teacher training in 2021 and opened her yoga center, Floga Studio, the same year. She teaches Vinyasa and Restorative Yoga and is devoted to sharing the benefits of the practice with those from all walks of life, and especially with teenagers who she feels desperately needs yoga during these tumultuous years.
She opened her yoga studio, Floga, the same year she got trained in yoga! We talked about if yoga is popular in Lesotho, and how it’s hard to get yoga to all the rural areas in her country. There is a fear that yoga is a religion, or a way to worship of a sun god or something of that sort. So Seitebatso is grateful that teenagers have the most curiosity and are willing to take in the practice as a whole - more than just an exercise, more than self-inquiry. She also shared her thoughts on why it’s been her experience that teenagers are so receptive to yoga. Teenagers in Lesotho have taken to yoga more than other groups in the community, in terms of attitude and concentration it can uplift so many people’s lives. She sees yoga as a way to help teenagers become achievers.
Additionally, Seitebatso talked about how yoga has the possibility of unlocking potential in youth and expanding their minds to other possibilities for livelihoods, and teaching them ways to focus and different ways to interact with others. She sees yoga as an amazing opportunity for the next generation to expand their horizons!

My conversation with Yangchen Lhamo, a yoga teacher from Bhutan, was so delightful as we discussed how yoga is not just what you practice, but how you walk, talk, and interact with others. I hope that this conversation lit a spark in you, about how yoga can help all sentient beings.

Tell me more about Yangchen Lhamo
Yangchen Lhamo is a yoga teacher and yoga studio owner in Bhutan. She teaches Hatha yoga, meditation, and Ashtanga Vinyasa. She completed her 200-hour yoga teacher training in Rishikesh in January 2020, and opened Yoga Yangchen in Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan, in September 2020. In 2022, she completed her 300-hour yoga teacher training in Rishikesh.
Yoga Yangchen’s main social cause is Doghouse Bhutan, which she founded with her Bhutan-based Swiss friend Nadine. It is a community-based project. Doghouse Bhutan builds doghouses for the free-roaming dogs of Bhutan using scrap materials to protect them from the rain, cold, and snow.
Yangchen’s passion in life is creating and improving the well-being of all sentient beings— animals and people alike. She loves learning and exploring new things and meeting new people. She believes that changing the world for the better requires you to start with yourself. After all, ‘practice what you preach’ is core to being able to inspire others.
What to expect in the Yoga In Bhutan episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast
I was astounded that Yangchen opened her yoga studio in the same year as getting her yoga certification, as well as in the middle of the pandemic! So many yoga studios closed during the pandemic, yet Yanchen knew it was time for her to open her own. She wanted to give back to her community. Yoga has given Yangchen so many beautiful gifts, like the ability to be more reflective instead of reactive. Yet, she sure has given so many gifts back to her community!
Yangchen also shared with us her thoughts on yoga. Yoga is not just what you practice. Yoga is the way you walk, talk, and the actions you take. Everything, all the small things, is yoga.

Favorite Quote From Sachiko Kawabata
“Taoism has a surprising amount in common with Hatha yoga. In fact, as a Japanese person, I can easily understand Chinese philosophy, which is based on a common culture and Indian philosophy. I think many people believe that yoga happened only in India. Yoga did not originate only in India. Around the time yoga was born, synchronicities were happening all over the world at the same. Especially in China, there are many common items such as chi. Chi is energy, by the way. So Chi is similar to prana, meridians are similar to nadis.”

A short time later, Michel joined a Kundalini Yoga Teach Training in Mexico and then a Hatha yoga teacher training course. In Cuba, as Michel obtained a university degree in Therapeutic Physical Culture. He has also studied Japanese medicine, the Matsunaga shiatsu method, for three years. He then founded AgataYoga, which involves some yoga teachers and therapists who work alongside Michel and offer spiritual retreats.
What to expect in the Yoga In Cuba episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast
On the podcast, we talked about what is Kundalini yoga, and why out of all the types of yoga out there, he chose to study Kundalini. Michel feels that Kundalini yoga offers the maximum amount of benefits in the shortest amount of time. Personally, Michel shared that he only practices 5-10 minutes of Kundalini yoga a day, and that is enough to provide the benefits he needs. As he said, “Yoga teachers have more secrets than yoga students— more knowledge.” These secrets help him to get the benefits he needs in mere minutes, just as he finds that his students need an hour or more to really soak up the magic of the practice.
I was also grateful that Michel shared with us what it is like to live in Cuba, and the difficulties that creates for him, as a yoga teacher, and for his country as a whole. He was very transparent about what the reality in Cuba is like, and he expressed excitement that yoga in Cuba has been slowly and steadily growing as more and more people are coming to the practice.

What to expect in the Yoga In Bosnia episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast
Mike fell in love with yoga during his very first class. He took a class during a trip to Massachusetts. Yoga is impossible to learn from videos. Mike and I then talked about what is Vinyasa Krama yoga, and what it was like for him to go to India to studio Ashtanga Vinyasa and Vinyasa Krama yoga. Vinyasa Krama yoga is more accessible, with ten set sequences.

Kaloyan Popov is certified under the Yoga Alliance by Sanjay Yogi. He completed his yoga teacher training in Sofia, Bulgaria, and he will be graduating as a physiotherapist in 2023. Kaloyan is passionate about helping people by seeing the human body as a whole. He teaches vinyasa yoga, and occasionally a specialized type of Kundalini yoga.
What to expect in the Yoga In Bulgaria episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast
Bulgaria was part of the communist block so everything around spirituality was forbidden until the 1990s. Kaloyan was born into democracy, just three years after Bulgaria entered into a democracy. When Kaloyan was young, his father was reading him Indian tales, and part of the Bhagavad Gita. In high school, his mathematics teacher would tell stories about sacred geometry.
He acknowledges that when he started teaching yoga, he took a step back in yogic life. It brought him back into “normal life,” having to focus more on the clock and being responsible to show up at certain places at certain times. He knew it was time to share his knowledge. After he started teaching yoga, he decided to study physiotherapy because he felt like it was close to yoga, working with the breath and movement. Kaloyan believes that the answer to our physical ailments, and our stress, is yoga.
Interestingly, Kaloyan says that yoga has a lot of stereotypes. He’s trying to put science to yoga, and show people that yoga is more than the stereotypes that they have in their heads— whether that is that yoga is fitness based, or the only reason that a man would teach yoga would be to look at women’s bodies (so sad that he said this is a stereotype he faces!)

During the course of our conversation, Lianik wove in so many insights about the multidimensionality of the practice of yoga. She defined Raja Yoga and Jnana Yoga and then expanded upon them, why they are the paths of yoga she has been drawn to. She explained how the physical dimension of yoga, is the most limited of the human being. That’s why the asana practice is so accessible to everyone, and why it’s only the first layer of yoga. It’s only one of the branches— there are seven others!
Lianik shared beautiful thoughts around all the dimensions around the practice and path of yoga.

Majid used to work for an international airline, located in Pakistan, and at the Sheraton hotel there was a yoga class offered in the hotel itself. Although that was his first yoga asana class, he had already been reading books about yoga and his curiosity was piqued.
Once Majid came back to Oman, one day his accountant came to the office and asked him if he was interested in yoga and after Majid said yes, there was a yoga teacher who came to his colleagues’ house and asked him to join.
Majid always felt mesmerized by yoga teachers, immensely curious about how yoga teachers crafted sequences, and about the depth of their knowledge. Something was sparked in him and he knew he wanted to teach yoga one day. It took years until the right yoga teacher training in Oman for him.
Majid has a strong daily meditation practice, he sits in meditation before sunrise and chants the 99 names of God in Islam. Majid knows that meditation and yoga detoxifies the body, cleanses the body. Yoga has become a personal life for him— he enjoys the vitality, the challenges, the energy— it’s a part of him.
We also talked about what Oman is like as a country, and what it’s like to live there!

She is a yoga teacher from Malaysia. My conversation with Alia Lika, a yoga teacher from Malaysia, was so beautiful as we danced around so many topics around yoga— yoga isn't a handstand, and don’t skip Shavasana!
I hope that this conversation made you smile, made you laugh, and made you rethink what yoga is. If you’re looking to tune into a podcast episode that is all about being a yoga teacher while still being a student on the path of yoga then this is the conversation for you.

Tell me more about Alia Lika
Certified in 2016 with the Malaysian Association of Yoga Instructors in Hatha yoga, recently Alia Like completed another 200hrs YTT with Vikasa Academy and another 50hr YTT in Yin yoga by Alicia Casillas. Alia believes that a consistent yoga practice is fundamental to achieving a healthy mind and body.
Her teaching styles varies from a slow and alignment based to a power flow practice. Whether it’s a slow, alignment-focused session or a strength and endurance flow class, a Shavasana awaits at the end. From years of consistent practice, Alia is convinced that no matter what your energy or flexibility level is, yoga will help you discover and grow your true limits – help you sit, walk and exercise better, not to mention sleep well too.
What to expect in the Yoga In Alia Lika episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast
Did you know that yoga was banned in Malaysia in 2008? The government forbade it from being taught and practiced in the whole country. Fortunately, that law was repealed and then Alia was able to make her way to finding her way to yoga.
We also talked about common misconceptions around yoga— yoga is only for flexible people, yoga is only for a work-out, or yoga is practiced to lose weight. Alia actually turns away clients and students who say they want to lose weight. She also shared how a lot of her students struggle with shavasana.

Maryem Mayouti is a certified, RYT-500 yoga instructor and a certified mindfulness teacher. Her yoga classes are anatomy-informed and her instructions are geared towards injury prevention and connection to one's breath. She understands and reminds her students that skeletal differences and anatomical variations will stop us from looking like yoga models in pictures, so it is best is to focus on the inner journey. By bringing everything back to the breath, she helps the practitioner learn asana in a way that is relatable and easy to practice, so that it may be taken anywhere.
What to expect in the Yoga In Bermuda episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast
We talked about the power of being in a yoga class with others, and the communal impact of a yoga class. As social beings, being in a yoga classroom with other people doing the same thing as you is a powerful experience. Maryem defines yoga as “yoga lies somewhere in between grounding and connecting.”
Our conversation flowed so naturally as we touched on how humility is vital in a yoga practice, as is the need to be compassionate and kind to our bodies and to each other.
In regards to yoga in Bermuda, Maryem points out how yoga has been accepted globally not just because it’s mainstream, but because the benefits are real and have now been scientifically proven. She sees Bermuda as a reflection of that. And did you know that Bermuda is only 21 square miles big? That tiny of an island means a tight-knit community. With abundant natural beauty, Bermuda really is Bermudaful!

My conversation with Roxana Corojan, a yoga teacher from Romania, was so real and vulnerable, as we dove into how yoga can hold you, and can be a remedy for that which ails you, and that which you struggle against. I hope that this conversation delight in how yoga can be a playground, and how embodiment is empowerment.
If you’re looking to tune into a podcast episode that is all about embodiment, play, and about turning your practice into a process, then this is the conversation for you.
Roxana is a yoga teacher from Romania, was actually trained by Carlos Romero in Bali - who is a previous guest on the Wild Yoga Tribe podcast on Episode #34. Roxana is a yoga teacher and Thai yoga massage therapist who is deeply passionate about Somatics and Embodiment. She loves to mix mindfulness with play, and to bring yoga to alternative places.

What to expect in the Yoga In Romania episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast
Roxana came to yoga through her sister’s advice, and although she didn’t like it at first— she quickly came to love it. After experiencing severe burnout, she quit her job and headed off to Bali. She met Carlos Romero there, and fell in love with Thai Yoga massage, and with her practice. Although she never planned on becoming a yoga teacher, that was where the path led her.
Roxana seeks to create a home and a strong sense of community with each yoga class she teaches, and she felt in her bones she had found the right space to open a yoga studio in Romania. She opened her yoga studio and created beautiful rituals of sharing tea and practicing yoga, or sharing desserts, or doing tarot readings and yoga. Roxana realized, a long time ago, that community is what brings her true happiness.
Though, Roxana realized that to be a yoga teacher means having ten jobs at once and to be a studio owner, she felt like some of her joy was diminished with the fatigue of doing too many things. She decided to close her yoga studio and to work with other yoga studies as a freelancer.
I found it so powerful how Roxana said, “To be a yoga teacher is to be a composer of experiences.” And when we dove into the world of embodiment— WOW! She talked about yoga as a playground, to be able to play with the boundaries of form and to explore. Through embodiment she was able to touch into her sensuality, and felt waves of creativity and embodiment.
One of Roxana’s mantras is, “Turn your practice into a process.”

Yoga was a huge answer for Laura to all the big questions in life, all the big spiritual questions. And as yoga has been a part of Laura’s life for over half of her life, she feels like yoga has been a constant companion— an enormous part of our life that has watched her grow, a safe place to come back, always, whenever you need it. It’s a huge gift. Being able to share this gift with other, is a “double gift,” as Laura says.
As a yoga teacher training, Laura highlighted how the study of yoga never ends. Laura is passionate about the yoga scriptures, sutras, and reading all the spiritual texts of yoga. I was grateful how she talked about how and why it is so important to study the texts of yoga— it helps you to study yoga with your mind, to start to say to the ego I don’t want to suffer more, I want to love more. Yoga is freedom.
Yoga is an opportunity to choose again. As a way of being, yoga gives us the ability to choose again, and again, and again, in every moment.

What really peaked my interest was her 200hr Yoga Teacher Training in Universal Yoga. Universal Yoga is something I’ve never heard of before, and I was grateful that Vera took time to unravel how she first came to know about Universal Yoga and what Universal yoga is. Created and taught by Andrey Lappa. Universal Yoga has set sequences based on a highly scientific and anatomical approach.Yet, she says that Universal Yoga comes from within. The principle of Universal yoga is to always be awake and and to be conscious. It turns out that the founder of Universal Yoga is actually an engineer as well, so his attention to detail, anatomy, degrees of motion and movement is truly incredible.
We talked also about how Vera— very recently— burned her legs very badly and has had to recover from this injury and return to her yoga practice and to teaching.

My conversation with Dariya Kolodiy, a yoga teacher from Ukraine, was so beautiful as we talked about how yoga helps give acceptance of others and of the self as well. I hope that this conversation made you realize that no matter where you go, a yoga studio and your yoga mat will always be a safe place, a sanctuary, a place to come home to. Of course, we also talked about the war, and how her family and life has been effected.

She has taught yoga—and lived!—in Kazakhstan with her husband, and it was due to his job that they moved to Warsaw, Poland in 2020.
Dariya knows that over the years, she has not only become healthier, more flexible, and stronger through yoga, but yoga has completely changed her life. She began to really hear herself, to realize her desires and to be more present in the here and the now. Dariya knows for sure that yoga is a path that leads in the right direction.
What to expect in the Yoga In Ukraine episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast
Dariya and I opened the conversation by talking about how she first came to the practice of yoga— naturally, it was through the asana practice. Before the war, there were tons of yoga studios in Ukraine with a lot of different styles to try and to practice, and that was something she was very grateful for!
We moved our conversation through what yoga means to Dairya— a place to learn acceptance of yourself and acceptance of others. She sees yoga, and yoga studios and shalas, as places where she will always find a home and a community. When she has travelled and moved to other countries and cities, she has always found her tribe in the yoga studio itself.
Of course, the Ukraine and Russian war was brought up. But we also talked about what yoga in Ukraine was like before the war, and what Ukraine is like as a country to live in and to visit.

I hope that this conversation made you curious about how yoga can teach you that there is good in the world and that people are inherently good. Yoga can help you shape your perspective of the world.

What to expect in the Yoga In Nigeria episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast
After the death of her father in 2017, Motolani began her journey in yoga. She did her first international trip to Kenya to complete a yoga teacher training with the Africa Yoga Project. She started offering free yoga classes for 6 months after she completed her yoga training.
It’s recent that people have started waking up about their mental health and wellness in Nigeria. In 2017, this wasn’t there yet. It was all about fitness. First people assumed it was a religious practice with only chanting and worshipping other gods. The vaguest awareness was that it was an Indian practice. This was a challenge for her to reorient people to what yoga actually is. Slowly, people learned. Acro yoga was one of the ways she was able to get more people to come to her classes. Now, she has founded Rhodes Yoga NG and Rhodes Healthy Kitchen.
I loved how Motolani talked about how yoga changed her life, and the lessons she has learned from the practice. She talked about taking a step backwards when circumstances arise to be more human when dealing with daily circumstances. And about how yoga has helped to shape her perspective on the world.

She has been practicing yoga on regular basis since she her completed my first yoga teacher training in 2013, in Rishikesh, India. She has also studied yoga at Yoga Vidya Gurukul in Nasik, India in 2018 and is currently just traveled to India in April 2022 to do a Prabodh yoga training at Yoga Vidya Gurukul. She has completed fly-yoga training and helps manage a yoga studio in Kazakhstan.
What to expect in the Yoga In Kazakhstan episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast
Here mother was practicing yoga at home, and first learned yoga at University although they didn’t call it by the name yoga. It was referred to more as gymnastics or exercise, so when Nadia started to become interested in yoga books at a young age it wasn’t a surprise.
Starting when she was nine years old, Nadia found books about yoga at the library. First came to know yoga from books in the library, and as she grew older she got more and more interested in yoga and continued to read copious amounts of books on the path of yoga. She went to Rishikesh to receive her first yoga teacher training. She has returned to India many times ever since.
She manages a yoga studio in Kazakhstan and loves how the yoga studio community is like a true family, which is something she feels is part of yoga itself. Nadia defines yoga as a lifestyle, and as unity and peace inside yourself. It's an intimate an inner experience.
I loved how Nadia says that yoga is not a fantasy, it’s a discipline. It’s something you don’t always want to do. You need to “overcome yourself” to show up on the mat— yoga is developing strong willpower. You work on your habits and on your perception of the world, and on your negative perception of the world. You become more aware of your own reactions, and you realize that you are responsible for everything that happens within you. What you do now is your choice. Yoga is a constant self development practice.

He is a yoga teacher from the Czech Republic. From time machines, magic wands, and wishes from genies my conversation with Filip was beyond delightful, just as it was equally filled with powerful insight. My conversation with Filip, was so thought-provoking as we wove a conversation full of laughter paired with powerful insight. I hope that this conversation made you crave silence and self-reflection.
If you’re looking to tune into a podcast episode that is all about burnout, mental health, and the gifts of imperfection then this is the conversation for you.
Tell me more about Filip Klieštík
Filip is from Jenčice, Czech Republic and he first fell in love with yoga at the end of year 2010, and in 2012 he completed a Yoga Teacher Training in power yoga in the Czech Republic. In 2013, he traveled to India to do another Yoga Teacher Training, this time in Ashtanga Yoga. Filip has done several courses in Ayurveda while he was in India, including Ayurveda cooking, stress management. Recently he has completed a yoga psychology teacher training at Yoga Vidya Gurukul, and a yoga nidra teacher training as well.
Additionally, Filip has completed a psychotherapeutic training in SatiTherapy (Mindfulness therapy). He teaches Hatha yoga combined with meditation, relaxation, and a strong mindfulness approach. Moreover, he lectures at the Václav Krejčík Power Yoga Academy and participates in the teaching of future yoga instructors. In companies and offices, he takes care of the mental health of employees and leads trainings in burnout prevention programs.
What to expect in the Yoga In the Czech Republic episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast
My conversation with Filip was a true delight as we discussed how psychotherapy and yoga can go hand in hand on the path of transformation, healing, and change. Nowadays, everyone wants a quick fix, a magic pill, or even a magic wand— but change, growth, healing, all take hard work. You have to be open to change, and have the desire to change for change to actually happen.
Filip and I talked about how vast yoga is, and how it is a place of self-discovery. It’s when people can move without borders, to go inside of themselves and really understand who they are. It’s the realest of all realities— our mind, body, and soul.
Thank you for listening to the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast— be well.

She is a yoga teacher from Vanuatu and she's also the co-founder of the leading Yoga Association in Vanuatu. It's donation based and, it has been for 13 years.
My conversation with Nicola Barnes, a yoga teacher from Vanuatu was so delightful as we took a deep dive into the world of her yoga association in Vanuatu. And we also discussed how yoga is an art and an act of coming home. I hope that this conversation made you curious about balance and movement and expression, as well as the act of coming home to yourself without pressure without ego, without ambition, just coming home.
Tell me more about Nicola Barnes
Nicola Barnes started yoga seriously while living in London in the late 1990s. She became a yoga teacher in India at Neyyar Dam Sivinanda Ashram in 2003. Since then, she has taught in the Cayman Islands and in Vanuatu. She is the co-founder of the leading Yoga Association in Vanuatu, which is entirely donation-based and has been for 13 years. All of the yoga teachers in the Vanuatu yoga association volunteer their time. She teaches a mixed Hatha style, which is mostly asana based, but does involve pranayama. She has been teaching yoga for 19 years.
The Vanuatu Yoga Association was set up so that yoga in Port Vila would have a sense of community and longevity. It also gives a forum for those who love to share their passion for yoga with others to instruct classes. The Vanuatu Yoga Association aims to support the local community by offering classes that are welcoming and affordable.
What to expect in the Yoga In Vanuatu episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast
I loved how Nicola highlighted how yoga exists in the real world— it’s not a cartoon or a Hollywood creation. It exists in the raw, unexpected, natural way of life and of living. She pointed out how Instagram yoga with perfect hair, lovely beauty, and being picture-perfect isn’t how yoga should really be viewed or considered— it’s messy, raw, and includes all the hiccups and bumps in life!
We also dove into how Nicky, along with two other co-founders, dreamed up the Vanuatu yoga association and decided to make it a nonprofit, volunteer based organization. Nicky expressed that, “It's just been amazing that trusting in the goodness of people and trusting that something that doesn't seem to be commercially logical can work.”

She is a yoga teacher from Namibia. She teaches power yoga, yin yoga, and yoga alignment at the Virgin Active Windhoek clubs and at the Yoga Shala. She has been teaching yoga full time since 2016. After a serious car crash, and doctors saying she’ll never walk again, Gergentia beat the odds through yoga and eastern healing techniques like Qi Gong and Reiki.
My conversation with Gergentia Shoombe, a yoga teacher from Namibia, was so astounding as we took a deep look at the power of the body and spirit to heal. I hope that this conversation gave you a glimpse into how everything can come together even as it falls apart.
If you’re looking to tune into a podcast episode that is all about inner strength and the strength community gives you, then this is the conversation for you.
What to expect in the Yoga In Namibia episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast
After a serious car crash, Gergentia knew she needed healing, and she found meditation. She couldn’t sit, stand, or walk— but she found peace in meditation as she was on her journey of healing.
In the beginning, yoga was simply meditation for her, before she even learned asanas. In all actuality, she didn’t think her body could do asanas, as after the car crash, her doctors thought she would never walk again. She had never even tried asanas before her car crash, and it wasn’t until after she had done some healing therapy work with Qi-Gong and Reiki.
In Swaziland, a monk introduced Gergentia to bhakti yoga and Maha-matra chanting which led her to change her whole life and led her to study holistic healing therapy. She applied to do a yoga teacher training with a the Africa Yoga Project.

What to expect in the Yoga In Portugal episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast
Paulo and I kicked off the conversation by talking about how yoga first came into Paulo’s life. After a heartbreak, his friends recommended yoga. Although he was in the military, he decided to become a yoga teacher and open his own yoga studio— affiliated with the Chintamani Yoga Association.
Chintamani means transformation. Paulo described it as a kind of alchemy. As if they are transforming themselves from the heavy, dullness of our gross bodies into spiritual beings of light. Paulo took us back through the lines of yoga, and explained to us about the origins of yoga and how he seeks to honor them. Of course, he was very explicit that his ultimate goal is Samadhi or liberation.
I found a lot of what Paulo said to be very curious— how he doesn’t like to teach just a single yoga class as he doesn’t find it to be beneficial for the students. And how he walked us through some of the different layers of the practice and path of yoga.
Of course, we wrapped up the episode talking about yoga in Portugal and what Portugal is like to visit.
Curious? Tune in! And welcome to yoga in Portugal!

She completed her 500hr yoga teacher training at the Himalayan Institute, and has completed an Ayurvedic Yoga Specialist Training with Kathryn Templeton, and attends Ayurvedic Institute webinars with Dr. Vasant Lad and the AyurPrana Team.
What to expect in the Yoga In Croatia episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast
Eli and I began our conversation with learning how yoga first came into her life. She first encountered yoga through meditation, and then through books given to her by a friend. At this time, a few decades ago, there were no yoga studios in Croatia. She feels enormous gratitude that she first came to yoga through mediation as Eli says, “After all, yoga is a liberation path to the ultimate truth and to the Supreme. And so meditation is the crown of yoga.”
We then shared our mutual gratitude and respect for Thich Nhat Hanh, which dovetailed into a conversation about finding a teacher wherever you look— whether that is your family, your friends, or a cat. Which then progressed into a conversation about how to integrate yoga in your daily life, touching on Ayurvedic practices and perspectives.
We wrapped up the episode talking about Croatia and about what the yoga scene is like in Croatia now.

This week, I welcome Aurélie Martin Scally, who goes by Lily, is yoga teacher who founded five yoga studios in Morocco onto the Wild Yoga Tribe podcast. She first founded Om Yoga Studios in 2013, and then founded the EPIC Festival in Marrakech in 2019. Since 2019, she also runs EPIC yoga teacher trainings in Morocco. Lily studied ashtanga yoga in Thailand, and Aerial Yoga with Cirque du Soleil artists. For her, a beautiful series of yoga is like a work of art, a mix of technique and intuition.
My conversation with Aurélie Martin Scally, who founded five yoga studios in Morocco, was so incredible as we took a deep dive into the world of studio ownership and how to cultivate energy and spirit in multiple studio centers.
We also discussed yoga as a way to find balance. The world isn’t black or white, and yoga is a way to discover, see, and accept all the variations of color you have inside of you.
What to expect in the Yoga In Morocco episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast
Aurélie discovered a Bikram yoga studio in Morocco, and after the death of her father, she found strength and solace on the yoga mat. The owner of that Bikram yoga studio, Nabil Scally, would soon become Lily’s husband. After closing the Bikram yoga studio, Lily and Nabil founded Om Yoga Studios in Morocco, first in Casablanca and then later in Marrakech and Dakhla. They now own five yoga studios, and founded EPIC Yoga Festival and EPIC Yoga Teacher Trainings in Morocco, and available online— soon available around the world on their yoga world tour!
During our conversation, Lily and I discussed what it was like to open a yoga studio in Morocco, and the advice she would offer to yoga teachers who hope to open their own yoga studios one day. Her main advice is to be careful to not get lost in the yoga studio area, keep your own personal practice strong and keep teaching. And to also be careful to not teach too much. It can be tempting to teach all-day every day, and also marketing, accounting, planning, and more— so many hats!— but to make sure not to burn yourself out.

--- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wildyogatribe/messageWelcome to Episode #34 of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast! This week, I welcome Carlos Romero onto the show. He is a yoga teacher from Venezuela and the founder of Livin’ Inspired. He has been immersed in the journey of self-exploration over the last 20 years, and is the founder of Livin’ Inspired. Carlos is the kind of a yoga teacher who artfully curates every moment of the mind-body-spirit journey, leaving just enough space for silence. He has taught yoga all over the world, and has been based in Bali for the last 12 years. He’s been teaching at Yoga Barn for many years.
My conversation with Carlos Romero, a yoga teacher from Venezuela was so illuminative as we took a deep dive into the synchronicity and transformation that has occurred on Carlos’ path of yoga. Carlos defined yoga as intimacy— as moving closer to ourselves and experiencing union and connection with own lungs, our own hearts, our own selves. I hope that this conversation made you want to turn a little closer towards yourself.
If you’re looking to tune into a podcast episode that is all about magnificent rituals and raising consciousness through collective movement then this is the conversation for you.
What to expect in the Yoga In Venezuela episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast
At 16 years old, Carlos Romero took Indra Devi's book on yoga and did self-practice and self-study in the mountains in Caracas. At university he studied pharmaceutical science, though he felt an intense duality— that his heart was calling for a path of yoga, but given his age, his parents were strongly pushing him towards a university education in Venezuela.
Then he started doing donation yoga classes with his fellow classmates at University. After he graduated and began working in a pharmacy, he was still teaching yoga classes after work and he felt a bit like “superman,” with taking off his lab coat and donning his yoga pants and flip-flops. He soon realized his real path was the path of yoga, that was what he was meant to do and how he was meant to serve. When an opportunity came up to move to Costa Rica and teach yoga, and then later in Bali— where he has been living for Bali for the last 12 years teaching yoga and building his yoga company, Livin’ Inspired.
Carlos is a well of knowledge about the many branches of holistic healing. His desire to help raising consciousness through collective movement, and to help people create a vibrant and authentic lifestyle is at the center of all his actions and endeavors.
Curious? Tune into the Yoga in Venezuela episode to learn more and bask in Carlos’ wisdom.

My conversation with Michela Maltoni was so delightful as we spoke about how different types of yoga align with people’s different rhythms, and how yoga is a mirror, a reflection of our daily life. We also talked about how yoga can heal a destroyed body, and how flexibility of mind a necessary element for yoga teachers everywhere— especially in these unique times!

Michela Maltoni started her career as a professional dancer, and then worked in Italian TV and with theater companies around the country, including international shows in America and on cruise ships like Royal Caribbean. During her career as a dancer, she trained as a Personal Trainer and a Pilates instructor, and then, yoga finally arrived. After years of practicing, Michela became a yoga teacher, and in January 2020 she founded my online yoga school called: Let it Yoga, a digital platform with over 350 lessons, in which she regularly holds lessons live and on demand. She is certified in Vinyasa, Yin Yoga, Prenatal and Postnatal yoga and lives in Rome, Italy.

When her body was destroyed and had nothing else to turn to, she found vinyasa yoga— a dynamic style that she hadn’t tried before, and she fell in love. Vinyasa yoga was her therapy. It helped her body to heal. As Michela says, “Yoga was a necessity.”
Michela believes that yoga is a mirror, a reflection of our daily life. And she strives to meet her students exactly where they are and to develop a relationship with them so that she can guide them through everything that comes up on and off the mat.

My conversation with Samuel Muthama, a yoga teacher from Nairobi, Kenya, was so moving as Samuel took us on a journey, walking us through his journey, of how he transformed a life of crime and toil into a life centered on yoga, with the kind generosity and assistance of the Africa Yoga Project I hope that this conversation made your realize the gift that yoga can really be. I hope you consider joining Samuel for a class on Zoom soon.
If you’re looking to tune into a podcast episode that is profoundly honest, raw, and real about how yoga can change your life— then this is the conversation for you.
Tell me more about Samuel Muthama
From Nairobi, Kenya, Samuel Muthama was introduced to yoga in 2017 when he completed his 200 hours yoga teacher training and attained a certificate at Africa Yoga Project.
With a background in boxing and fitness, Samuel first approached yoga thinking that it would be easy and relaxing. After his first class, he had a very different experience—it was strenuous and physically demanding. Yet, he loved the sense of peace and harmony he found in yoga—unity between the body, mind, and breath.
Samuel Muthama teaches yoga both in person and online. To join him, please send an Instagram, Whatsapp, or Facebook message his way.
What to expect in the Yoga In Kenya episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast
It’s hard to explain or to express exactly what you’ll hear in the yoga in Kenya episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast with Samuel Muthama. Coming from the slums outside of Nairobi, Samuel lived a life of toil, living hand-to-mouth, to try to put food on the table for his family. He carried jugs of water to people in his community, to try to earn a little money. He was doing drugs, and was being pressured into turning to crime. However, all that changed, when he delivered water to the home of a yoga teacher.
Samuel's story shines the brightest light on the power of yoga, to change not just his own life but the life of his entire family. He shares it with raw vulnerability, and with a profound gratitude that emanates from his words, and from his voice.
I sincerely hope you consider tuning into this moving episode of the podcast, and joining Samuel for a yoga class on Zoom to support him and his family. I already have joined a class of his, and I can attest that he is a wonderful teacher.

I hope our conversation made you curious about becoming curious yourself— about your own individual experience with yoga in your body, energy, and emotions. He is a yoga teacher from Azerbaijan. He’s an aerial yoga (fly yoga) instructor, and a past studio owner of a yoga studio in Baku. He teaches classic hatha, power yoga, fly yoga, and something very unique, which he calls complex yoga.
My conversation with Gafar was so interesting as we looked at the Azerbaijan culture and how expressing emotion and refreshing the brain benefit his community. I hope that this conversation made you curious about how you could integrate different methodologies and traditions together to make your own kind of complex yoga practice.
If you’re looking to tune into a podcast episode that is all about living a life around yoga, using yoga at any time of your day, or of your life, then this is the conversation for you.
Tell me more about Gafar Ganizadeh
Gafar Ganizadeh first began to practice yoga in 2009 when he was invited to practice yoga with one of this friends who had just received her yoga teacher certification. After attending her classes, Gafar quickly realized that yoga was the thing that was missing from his life. Gafar’s first yoga training was in 2016 in Hatha, and a year later he obtained his advanced yoga teacher training certificate. In 2017, Hatha became a Fly Yoga teacher as well. Gafar teaches yoga in his hometown of Baku. He teaches classic hatha, power yoga, fly yoga, and his own practice, which he calls complex yoga.
--> $25-off coupon for yoga classes with Lily on Moxie!
What to expect in the Yoga In Azerbaijan episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast
Gafar created the concept of complex yoga, this is a type of yoga he describes as melding together of different practices and methodologies including kundalini, ashtanga, and sufism. He used to own his own yoga studio in Baku with his wife called High Fly yoga. He had to close that school down due to the pandemic, though he teaches with his wife and friends at another yoga studio in Baku now.
As a yoga teacher, when he’s in class, he can feel what his students need for the day. He calls this his superpower! Gafar also shared with us that he estimates that 90% of all people who come to yoga classes in Azerbaijan do so for health reasons, whether that is sleep issues or spine issues.
Yoga is very popular in Azerbaijan with plenty of yoga students and teachers, as people realize how yoga can help people get their health back.
Something I thought was particularly curious was how Gafar suggested that yoga was in Azerbaijan before, but went by different names. Azerbaijan is a very spiritual country, and he believes that lots of yoga teachers today create their own techniques and practices by tapping into old Azerbaijani traditions and knowledge.

My conversation with Pamela Harris, a yoga teacher from Barbados, was so lovely as she shared stories about what yoga was like in the 1960s and 70s in Barbados and how it has evolved over time. Hearing her stories about demonstrating yoga at a Hilton Hotel and how people were worried about getting swept up into a “hippie world,” provided such a unique snapshot into the past. Pamela and I also talked about Yoga Therapy and Anusara yoga and weaving the philosophy of yoga into every class, and taking it through the whole practice. Pamela is devoted to inner peace and personal development and committed to sharing a practice that is inclusive, accessible and for every level of oneself.
If you’re looking to tune into a podcast episode that is about energetic openings and connecting to the divine within yourself then this is the conversation for you.
What to expect in the Yoga In Barbados episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast
Pamela started learning yoga around the age 8 as her mother took her along to yoga classes. Yoga in the late 60s in Barbados was a magical place for Pamela, although apparently some ladies in Barbados of the late 60s and early 70s were worried about “going off into some hippie world” if they attended yoga classes. In fact, Pamela performed yoga demonstrations at the Hilton Hotel in Barbados in the 1960s— a story she unraveled for us on the show.
Though Pamela didn’t continue yoga through her teenage years, but came back to it around the age 25. She now is a studio owner in the Barbados, who teaches Anusara yoga and yoga therapy. Pamela finds the sacred within all, as she looks at yoga as an experience of journeying inwards. In regards to teaching yoga, Pamela prioritizes guiding others to delight in the experience of yoga and in life. Moreover, I loved how Pamela talked about yoga as honoring individuality and celebrating diversity, all while recognizing our oneness.
Pamela and I also discussed the 5 principles of alignment of Anusara Yoga, as well as the scandal that happened with the founder of Anusara yoga, John Friend, and how she reacted and responded to that becoming public knowledge and how Anusara has shifted since then.

My conversation with Orsi Kinka, a yoga teacher from Hungary, was so fruitful as she offered up advice to the next generation of yoga teachers. Of course, Orsi shared her story, as well as how yoga transformed her into a more confident, vibrant person. I loved Orsi’s definition of yoga— yoga is being aware of your own life. Yet, she is teaching yoga online, as well as in person yoga classes in Hungary.

She is a yoga teacher from Canada. Shannon Crow is such a phenomenal resource. As a yoga teacher, yoga podcaster, and yoga entrepreneur, I feel like I could have talked to Shannon crow for hours and hours. The focus of our episode was on Shannon’s two professional pillars— pelvic health and niche work for yoga teachers.

She is a yoga studio owner and yoga teacher from Botswana. The way that Bonolo describes yoga, as a fairy godmother was such a surprise! But a delight to hear and to listen to her share her thoughts on yoga in Botswana and how yoga makes her feel.
As a yoga studio owner of one of the few yoga studios in Botswana, Bonolo describes what it was like for her to find yoga herself, and her journey to find a yoga teacher— it was harder than she expected!
Get ready for a fun conversation filled with laughter and creative analogies and metaphors! Yoga in Botswana, here we come!
Tell me more about Bonolo Phaladze…
Bonolo Phaladze is the founder and lead teacher at Yownn Yoga, a yoga studio based in Gaborone, Botswana. The studio offers yoga retreats in Southern Africa, and yoga classes both in person and online. Bonolo is a Registered Yoga Teacher, RYT200 with Yoga Alliance, she specializes in yoga for beginners primarily because the yoga scene in Botswana is relatively new, and there is a lot of work to be done to introduce more people to yoga.
Bonolo's first encounter with yoga was not enthusiastic, it was a doctor's recommendation. In 2013 due to a high risk pregnancy she had no choice but to accede to her doctor's demands to abandon her regular high intensity train for something low impact and gentle like yoga. She was skeptical of yoga, maybe even judgmental, she had never once considered yoga a fitness activity. The first yoga session sparked a curiosity and respect in her that propelled her to keep returning to the mat.
What to expect in the Yoga In Botswana episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast
Bonolo kicks off the conversation by revealing how she first came to yoga, as her bio indicates, it wasn’t enthusiastically. She first saw people at the gym just lying around on their yoga mats (apparently!) and she judged yoga as something too boring and easy.
Now, it is her passion to teach new students what yoga is and what yoga can be. As yoga in Botswana is still not mainstream, the majority of her students are new to the practice. She loves walking alongside her students on their journey of yoga and showing them that it is more than just handstands and headstands. The emotional and mental presence involved in yoga is where the magic lies.
While yoga in Botswana may be relatively “unpopular” as its not mainstream yet, Bonolo describes Botswana as an oasis for those seeking peace, and as she jokes “a place to sleep.”

Tracy was deep in the throes of getting her Master’s in London when yoga came into her life. From the first class, she felt “changed.” This lead her to do a training in Scotland, and then to go to Thailand to receive her 200hr Hot Yoga Teacher Training certification. What I find to be the most inspiring part of Tracy’s journey is that she immediately took the leap of faith into becoming a yoga teacher full-time. While she doesn’t currently own her own studio— although she hopes to one day!— she is deeply immersed in serving her yoga community in Lebanon, and is grateful for the sanctuary that yoga provides to not just herself, but to her whole community, during these difficult times for her country.
How does yoga help? How is yoga a sanctuary?

In 2015, Tracy took the leap to turn her passion into her profession and joined the 200hours Hot Yoga Teacher Training at the Absolute Yoga Academy in Thailand. Directly upon completion of the program and returning to Lebanon, Tracy started teaching private and public yoga classes including Hot Yoga, Vinyasa, Power Yoga and Yogalates in Beirut’s leading yoga studios and gyms. She is now co-leading yearly 200hr teacher training programs in Lebanon and internationally, specializing in vinyasa yoga. And there are five big cultures living in Suriname— India, China, Indonesia, Africa, and Europe. All these cultures coexist and live together in Suriname. Arti herself has ancestral ties to India. When I asked Arti to talk about Suriname and yoga in Suriname, Arti shares that how the cultures live side by side and celebrate each other. She feels that they are one big family.
In this episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe podcast, Arti and I take a deep dive into her yogic path. She is a Bhakta, which means a true devotee of a guru. Her Guru is Sri Sri Ravi Shankar who is still alive today. He is the founder of the Art of Living Foundation, in which Arti is also a devoted practitioner and teacher. Her daily sadhana, her daily practice, includes all of the pillars of the Art of Living and Sri Sri Yoga— the Hatha yoga sequence of Sri Sri Ravi Shankar’s lineage. Her daily practice includes not just sadhana, but also Seva and Satsang.

She is a Master Yoga, Meditation, and Breathwork Teacher deeply rooted in the Himalyan Yog Vedantic Tradition trained in the Himalayas, India (Vedic & Tantric Transcendental Wisdom, Tantra, Kriya, Naad, Himalayan Kundalini, Laya, and Hatha Vinyasa. Michelle is also an Usui Reiki Master, a Vedic Thai Yoga Therapist, and a Jyotishi.

Michelle’s nonprofit, Rhythm of Change (ROC), teaches yoga to women in prisons, children in Belize’s school system, and to youth at detention centers. This week, I welcome Ksenia Rasapriya Bodhi onto the show. She is a yoga teacher from Russia, who leads international yoga teacher trainings and yoga retreats in India.
Long ago, when living and working in Russia a voice inside of her said— “Go to where the Ganges begins.” She had no idea where that was. She pulled out a map, and traced the Ganges from the southern tip of India up to the source of Ganges, where it all begins— Rishikesh.
She studied at Moscow University of Yoga and completed her 200hr YTTC there. At the same time, she was studying osteopathy. Over the last 6 years, Ksenia has continued her education in yoga with her teachers and her guru-ji. In India, in 2015, her project Yogatoursindia was born with the mission to provide authentic yoga knowledge to every Russian speaking practitioner. In 2016, she opened a yoga school and studio in Rishikesh, Yoga Vidya, with her husband Prashant Jakhmola.
I met Ksenia for the first time in Rishikesh in 2018, and we reunited again in Rishikesh in 2019. We’re in the same yoga circles, as I take daily classes at Yoga Vidya, which is the studio she owns with Prashant-ji.
In our conversation, we dive into the depths of what has called us both to India, the energy of Bhakti and jnana yoga pulsing through India, and how yoga has shaped Ksenia’s life. Get ready for an inspiring episode, dear listeners!

Almudena and I are connected through Punyah Yoga in Rishikesh. While we haven’t met in person, we became fast friends online as we are both consider India to be a kind of second home— especially Rishikesh.
Almudena’s passion for India as the root source of yoga is clear. In our conversation, we discuss Almudena’s journey in yoga, her opinions on what yoga in India teaches Western students, and how to honor the essence of yoga, as a teacher, in your yoga classes.
What to expect in Episode #7 of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast
Almudena believes that it is the responsibility of the yoga teacher to transmit the spiritual practice of yoga. Teachers who are only taught during yoga teacher training during anatomy, alignment, or asana this is what they are going to transmit. If they are in front of a student in the role of a teacher, then they should go deeper and deeper in this practice. I found that this part of our conversation was the most moving— the responsibilities of a yoga teacher.
We also discuss transcending the physical part of yoga. As Almudena says, “Doing an inversion is nothing.” Flexibility is not the goal of yoga, and Almudena definitely drives that home. Yoga is a tool for connecting the individual self to the superior self, and as a path to self-awareness and realization.

Welcome to Episode #5 of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast! This week, I welcome Feliciano Barria Alba onto the show. Feliciano was actually a part of my cohort at Nepal Yoga Home in Kathmandu, and we studied alongside each other as we worked towards our 200hr hatha/vinyasa yoga teacher training certification.
Feliciano is from a small town in Panama, from La Chorrera. As a flight attendant for Emirates airlines, Feliciano has traveled the world. He’s been to 85 different countries so far! Based in the United Arab Emirates, in Dubai, Feliciano is quite the globe trotter.
True to his energy, and lifestyle, Feliciano has picked up lots of skills, talents, and interests along his journey. While this episode is titled “Yoga in Panama,” we talk about a whole lot more than just yoga in Panama!
In this episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast, Feliciano and I will discuss Ho’oponopono, reiki healing, and the law of attraction!
Get ready for a fun and fabulous conversation as we go deeper than just yoga in Panama…
What to expect in Episode #5 of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast:
In this episode, Feliciano and I explore the realms of self-healing and healing others through Reiki— as we are both certified Reiki practioners. We’ll also reveal what Ho’oponopono is all about and talk about the four-steps of Ho’oponopono. Interested in positivity? Interested in the law of attraction? Feliciano cultivates the attitude of gratitude and seeks to manifest positivity in his life through the law of attraction. Then, we’ll move on to yoga in Panama! We’ll talk about Catholicism, the culture, and how yoga in Panama really isn’t a big thing yet— it hasn’t taken off! Though, we both think yoga retreats and yoga studios in Panama will surely take off soon. In fact, Feliciano hopes to open his own holistic healing center and yoga retreat venue in Panama one day. Hopefully soon!

I met Ruta Keriane in Rishikesh in the summer of 2019 at Punyah Yoga. I was taking an Ashtanga Alignment and Adjustment course at Punyah Yoga while Ruta was taking her 200hr Yoga Teacher Training course there as well. When I met Ruta I was amazed. I mean, really and truly amazed. She’s this driven, dynamic 42 year old woman who has two children in their early twenties and she’s never tried yoga before and she is here in India wanting to become a yoga teacher? What!?
What’s even more impressive? Within just a couple months of getting back to Lithuania, she opened up her own studio there. That’s right. This brand new yoga student turned yoga teacher became a studio owner all in the matter of a few months.
Once Ruta knew her path, she wasted no time getting started.

Married for 26 years with a Bachelor in law and a Master in business management, Ruta has mostly worked as a commercial and project manager. I first met Ayn in Rishikesh, India back in 2018. We were staying in the same hostel and we decided to attend a Hatha Yoga class with the renowned teacher Sri Surinder Singh at Swasti Yoga Shala.
Ayn and I were fast friends, and have stayed in touch as fellow yoga practitioners on the path. Ayn is a yoga teacher in Cebu City, in the Philippines. I actually spent a month teaching yoga in Cebu myself, at Wellnessland, however Ayn was traveling outside of the Philippines and we weren’t able to reconnect in his home city.
In this episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe podcast, we will dive into yoga in the Philippines and learn more about Ayn’s affinity for pranayama and bandhas. For a quick explanation, pranayama is the movement of energy, or our life-force, through the breath. Bandhas are energy locks, using internal muscles (either tensing or relaxing them) to control the flow of energy.
As Ayn says in this podcast episode, “I started off like everyone, it was all about the asanas and strengthening and flexibility. It was all about the physical practice. So when I got introduced to bandhas, it changed my physical practice so much. It made so many postures more accessible that just going into these poses without using the bandhas and brute force— mindless efforts so to say.”

--- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wildyogatribe/messageHemant Singh is the founder of Punyah Yoga, a leading yoga teacher training school in Rishikesh India.
I first took classes with Hemant in Rishikesh in 2018, and continued to take a daily ashtanga course with him for nearly a month. I was struck by the strength of his teaching and by his presence in the shala. He has a keen eye for the tiniest details of each asana and his presence makes you know that he is always watching each infinitesimal movement you make. I certainly progressed in asana practice under his teachings.
I returned to Rishikesh in 2019 and continued to take classes with Hemant, and completed an Ashtanga alignment and adjustment course with him. We have kept in great touch over the years, and I now am a yoga nidra teacher at Punyah Yoga’s online teacher training courses.
How about a bit of his biography? Hemant firmly believes that one has to be strongly passionate about learning yoga in order to reap and experience the benefits of the path of yoga. He has practiced under the guidance of many teachers around the world including Prahlada Ji, Yogi Kamal Singh, and Vijay Mehra Ji. He considers Yogi Kamal Singh his Guru in the journey to Ashtanga Yoga and continues to pass on his teachings through Punyah Yoga School. Hemant’s classes follow the traditional Ashtanga Yoga Method, as it is taught today, with the particular emphasis on discipline being the first and foremost foundation of a Yoga practice.
I was delighted to have Hemant on the Wild Yoga Tribe podcast, to share his philosophies on yoga with you all, dear listeners.
What you can expect to learn from conversation with Hemant Singh on this episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe podcast:
As Hemant says, “Yoga is a journey. It’s very important we don’t get lost in the body and mind only. We have to have one strong calling— why am I here? Who am I? What is my real purpose? Then, you can really go deeper into your own roots.”
And my favorite quote of the episode— "The body and mind are rented space for the soul."

--- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wildyogatribe/messageTune in to the first official episode of the Wild Yoga Tribe Podcast! In this episode, I interview my dear friend Farah Mostafa who is from Cairo, Egypt. We first met back in July 2017 in Nepal Yoga Home during our 200hr Yoga Teacher Training. We immediately connected and were basically inseparable during our training. Fast forward a few years, and I was able to visit Farah in Egypt in the summer of 2019 and am planning another visit to see her in the fall of 2021!
Farah has a truly kind spirit. In this episode, you will get a feel for her energy, and for her teaching methodology and style.
An architect and a former gymnast, Farah Mostafa jumped from one sport to another until she found peace, balance and awareness in yoga. Farah stumbled upon her first yoga class while recovering from a back injury, seeing the effect it had on her body, connecting and discovering more about her inner-self was the beginning of the journey. She started digging deeper into a more spiritual practice, then travelled to Nepal to study for her 200 hours teacher training. Farah is currently a full time yoga teacher pursuing her dream job in helping others with their journey to self-discovery and development.
We will talk about what yoga is like in Egypt, whether it’s popular or not, and how she is teaching a very special student— a Paralympic swimmer who is trying to qualify for Tokyo 2021. We’ll also touch on Sufi Yoga, a type of yoga that I had never even heard of before!
Moreover, Farah and I will dive into what yoga has done for Farah on a very personal level. Although she was a competitive athlete, a gymnast, Farah struggled with severe back pain for years, and ultimately herniated her spine which halted her athletic career. Yoga was a gift to Farah “I started going to yoga classes and I loved how it felt, not just physically but spiritually. I was so depressed about my injury. I was so stressed, and feeling so down. I loved how it made me feel. Even though I used to do a lot of sports and move a lot, I wasn’t really connected to my body… I’ve learned so much body awareness though yoga.”
I also want to share with you, dear reader—and listener too I hope!— my favorite moment of my interview with Farah. I asked Farah to define yoga for me. She defined yoga ask alignment.
“Yoga means union in Sanskrit. It’s the union of the body, mind and the soul. Through this we get more aligned— aligned with our bodies, aligned with the moment, aligned with our breath. So alignment allows us to be more in harmony with our thoughts, our actions, our words— which makes us more intone with our purpose, intention, and values. When we are trying to find this harmony, things get aligned and put in the proper place,” says Farah.
