Submit ReviewIn Episode 109 of Totally Deep Podcast, Doug Stenclik and Randy Young of www.cripplecreekbc.com bring you the lowdown on the world of uphill and backcountry skiing and boarding. Gear, technique, fashion, jargon, guests, and assorted spray from folks who know how to earn it in the backcountry. The world's best backcountry skiing podcast.
The wheelhouse of Totally Deep expands in this episode when Doug and Randy interview Mark Grotjahn, a noted American artist who also happens to backcountry ski. Or, maybe, for TDP purposes, we have a backcountry skier who happens to be an artist. No matter, Grothjahn brings a unique and welcome perspective to the ski scene that embodies his broad vision of seeing the world. Gagosian.com writes about his art, "Grotjahn combines gesture and geometry with abstraction and figuration in visually dynamic paintings, sculptures, and works on paper. Each of his series reflects a range of art-historical influences and unfolds in almost obsessive permutations."
You can learn more about Grotjahn and his art here.
But the story doesn't end there. Grotjahn, a powder snow lover, also has a soft spot for DPS skis. More on that in a bit.
Recently, Grtotjahn opened an exhibit titled Backcountry. "In Backcountry, he continues to draw inspiration from rural landscapes and his ski touring and fly-fishing adventures in the backcountry of western Colorado," writes Gagosian.com. Along with the exhibit, Cripple Creek Backcountry, Grotjahn, and DPS released a limited edition series of skis featuring Grotjahn's art on the topsheets: the new ski is known as the Mark Grotjahn DPS 50 Kitchens Ski.
This also marks the release of a new DPS powder ski, the Kaizen 112.

Cody Townsend cements himself into the ski mountaineering lore (only you can define ski mountaineering) as his quest to ski The Fifty continues. This season, Tonswend has released videos documenting more classics, including a three-part Bugs to Rogers Traverse and a smattering of lines, including the Skyladder and a return to The Spinx in Alaska.
Cody also chats about the season at hand and his progress with the project, and as it comes down to spicier and logistically more complex lines, how the Fifty Project could extend several years out.
Then there's the gear. Doug and Cody discuss the evolution of Salomon's touring boot lineup and the release of the new QST Echo 106 ski, a more touring-oriented QST.

Gear, technique, fashion, jargon, guests, and assorted spray from folks who know how to earn it in the backcountry. The world's best backcountry skiing podcast.
Episode 107 features Blase Reardon, the Director of the Flathead Avalanche Center in Northwest Montana. Reardon has deep experience in the avalanche forecasting realm, having worked at the Sawtooth Avalanche Center and the Colorado Avalanche Information Center. Dialing up the TDP time machine, Reardon first appeared on the podcast in 2015, where they discussed such things as the STFU skintrack. You can find that episode here.
A highlight of episode 107 isn't a breakdown of the snow science but a real-deal unpacking of our complex decision-making processes in the backcountry. The season, not unlike many others, has been rife with unstable snowpacks in some regions and the uneasy quest to find safe, stable, and carefree skiing. With this in mind, Doug and Blase discuss their time together in Carbondale as Doug's local crew tries to stack the deck in their favor knowing that it is still house rules in avalanche terrain.

3. A relative bump in the number of backcountry skiers.
4. Othering in the backcountry.

Episode 106 features Jeremy Jones, a longtime boundary pusher in the snowboard scene. Jones' involvement in the sport takes many paths; business owner, steep riding pioneer, and political activist as the founder of POW (Protect Our Winters). After decades of experience, Jones finally put his thoughts to paper — he recently published his first book, The Art of Shralpinism — Lessons From The Mountains. Think of the book as part memoir, part manual for best practices in the mountains, part art book, and an ode to finding joy by making turns. Page after page, Jones exudes the glass-half-full ethos. And that's what you hear on Episode 106.

Episode 105 features an interview with Brian Rodine of the Friends of CAIC. Rodine is the organization's marketing and events director and trailhead program manager. According to their website, "The Friends of the Colorado Avalanche Information Center is a 501(c)3 organization that was created to support the CAIC, while contributing to avalanche awareness and education throughout Colorado. Since 2014 we have invested just over $2.4 million into avalanche safety. This money has funded Know Before You Go, developed avalanche safety videos and signage, created outreach for new and existing users, built new web and mobile applications, and supported the CAIC’s forecast operations."
Rodine speaks to the TDP crew face-to-face, which might not seem like such a big deal. But as we exit from our masked-up world, it is.

Doug calls September 15th the defacto start to pre-season training for backcountry skiing. Some call it dryland training. Some call it mountain biking. And some call it a "better late than never." If you are someone in need of a gentle nudge to get the motor revved and the soft tissue primed for your winter objectives, Zahan Billimoria spends some time on the pod discussing his perspective on training the whole body for mountain pursuits.
Billimoria comes to Totally Deep from the hills of Jackson, Wyoming, where he runs Samsara, an online and brick-and-mortar training service for mountain athletes. In a not-so-past life, Z was a standout mountain/ski guide for Exum. You can learn more about his experience as a guide and navigating dicey terrain in the mountains. Here are two good options; the first, a Totally Deep episode featuring Zahan, and the second, a Patagonia/TGR film.

Benedikt "Bene" Böhm, the CEO of Dynafit is a force of nature. Pushing into his mid-40s, the husband and father of three epitomizes life balance not by teetering near the fulcrum but by living near the extreme ends of the see-saw. He logs upwards of 30,000' of weekly vert, steers an international mountain products brand, and believes in full-value parenting.
To do as Böhm does, which is aspirational, might require a reassessment and a full-time live-in assistant to infill the calendar — there's seemingly no downtime. His 24-hour cycle is more like a 48-72 hour jam-packed time expanse for lesser motivated mortals. Perhaps the only explanation for his stoke and inexhaustibility rests on the cusps of special relativity, where time slows as one approaches the speed of light. There's some exaggeration here, but you get the point; Böhm gets stuff done.
Under Böhm's leadership, Dynafit has seen its global reach expand and entrance into the more general mountain endurance markets, like trail and mountain running, and solidify its place in the ski touring segment. In the mountains, he has climbed and skied 8000m peaks in the high Himalayas, single push traversed across the Alps, scorched the skimo scene as part of the German national ski mo team, and generally helped define the modern concept of moving efficiently through the mountains. Although we overuse the term "light and fast" here at WildSnow, Böhm embodies that style.
Suppose you're in the German Alps outside Munich on a patrouille im morgengrauen (German for dawn patrol according to Google Translate) and a Lycra-clad speedster cloaked head to toe in Dynafit steamrolls by. In that case, you may have caught a glimpse of Böhm's pre-work routine. If you zero in for the chase, get ready for some L5.
Böhm should help usher in the 2022-2023 season of Totally Deep; we are close to shorter days and frozen precipitation. If you need the motivation to get fit, make plans, and be your best self, this podcast is a self-help get-off-your-bum nudge.
For some video inspiration, the Interwebs become a gold mine if you want to learn more about Böhm and his exploits. Here are a few cherry-picked ski documentaries.

As Totally Deep finally notches episode 100, Doug and Randy banter just a bit about the past and the totality that is Totally Deep. They also converse with Jack Kuenzle who recently blasted up and down Mt. Hood to establish a new fastest known time (FKT). Kuenzle gives the FKT lowdown and reveals, in scientific terms, why wearing underwear only and skimo gear was his ticket to ride. Note, Kuenzle's underwear choice is pretty ho-hum, Champion, which means this fast cat must be a man of the people.
Kuenzle also provides insight into a training mission up Mt. Shasta, during which he snapped both skis. Kuenzle also holds the roundtrip FKT for Mt. Shasta.

As Totally Deep notches towards 100 episodes, we bring together two observers of the natural world and ski touring partners in Roman Dial and Alex Lee. Both are professors at Alaska Pacific University; Lee teaches philosophy while Dial has zeroed in on math and biology.
Lee has been featured on the podcast before. This is Dial's first go.
If you've done some basic research into Alaskan wilderness adventures, you're likely to have come across Dial's exploits. Dial remains a proto early-adopter considering how one pieces together moving from A to B to C when it entails the encyclopedia of groveling through Alaska's tangle of botany and mountains and hydrology. From packrafting to cycling, skiing, and skating (on ice skates) Dial imagined and realized moving across landscapes, sometimes elegantly, often bedraggled, and just in the knick of time.
I learned on fastestknowntime.com that he stamps his performance metrics as OKTs (only known time) and LKTs (loneliest known time). The link above also includes Dial's adventure CV and does not include his voluminous academic work.
Dial is also a National Geographic Explorer and the author of The Adventurer's Son.
On episode 99 of Totally Deep, Dial and Lee discuss researching the natural world on skis, gear revelations, and finding a shared passion for sliding on snow
