Submit ReviewToday on the podcast, my guest is Jenny Simpson, who just ran the Boston Marathon. She ran 2:31 and was the fourth American and 18th place over all. And this was just 10 weeks after a disappointing Olympic marathon trials where she made the decision to step out of the race at mile 18. We cover that at the end of the podcast. Jenny is a world-class 1500 meter runner. She ran at CU, was sponsored by New Balance for 12 years. She’s now sponsored by Puma. Some of her accomplishments include a gold medal at the world championships, multiple silver medals, a win at a diamond league, a 2016 bronze medal in the 1500 at the Olympics in Rio. And in this episode, we talk about what it was like to decide to run a marathon and to become a marathoner after grinding at the 1500 for so many years and being so good at that distance. Jenny has a lot of wisdom and advice to give us in this episode about what it looks like to try something new and different and also what it looks like to walk through a so-called failure and to get back up and try again. I always feel like I learn so much from Jenny and she’s just got this very honest, authentic and genuine way that she has conversations and it’s such an honor to have her back on the show. Enjoy this episode!
I’m exited to share my conversation from one of the live events I hosted at the Boston Marathon! This event as supported by Oiselle and proceeds from book sales at the event benefitted Girls on the Run Boston!
In this conversation we learn about Elvin Kibets life and the book that Johanna Garton wrote called “All in Stride” that highlights her and her husband Shadrack Kipchirchir’s life. Elvin shares about her life as an athlete, a service member in the Army and a mother. The program she is a part of is the Army World Class Athlete Program which many athletes in the US are a part of including the likes of Lenny Korir and Paul Chelimo.
We also talk with Oiselle athletes Brenna Detra and Bri Boehmer in this conversation.
Brenna is an 800 meter specialist with a PR of 1:59 and she is working to make the Olympic team this summer. She shares about being raised by a single Mom and now chasing her big running dreams. She also works remotely for Oracle. Bree was 4th at 2023 Indoor 800m, she’s a 2x NCAA qualifier in the 400 hurdles, an NCAA qualifier in the 4×100 and a semifinalist at the 2019 USAs Outdoor 800m.
Bri ran her first marathon at 42 in 2:33 and is an entrepreneur. She is the CEO of a forward-thinking local company, teach entrepreneurship at the University of Colorado-Boulder, and serves on the board of directors for Startup Colorado. She ran for CU and qualifyed for the national championships in the 3K & 5K. She also has a half Ironman PR of 4:21 and ironman PR of 9:22!
“Whatever your goals are it’s not too late. If there’s something you’ve wanted to do, do it. We set really weird rules and I don’t know why but don’t regret not trying.” – Bri
“Never be afraid to go after what you want.” – Brenna
“You’re more resilient than you think” – Elvin
This conversation was SO much fun. I co-hosted a live panel with Kara Goucher and Oiselle at the Boston Marathon on Saturday. This is Fast Girls Live. Oiselle is excited to empower the rising generation of women in sport and this was such a cool opportunity for these young girls to share their stories and for Kara to join in the conversation as well. This event benefited Girls on the Run Greater Boston. Girls on the Run is a nonprofit that helps design evidence-based, fun programs to inspire girl empowerment by building confidence, kindness, and decision-making skills.
I had the opportunity to become friends with Kara when she was a part of our Relay podcast and I just so appreciate everything that she does for the sport. She is an honest and relatable voice and she will stand up for what she believes in while encouraging the next generation.
In this conversation, Kara and I talked to five high school girls that are doing incredible things in this sport! They all live in the Boston area.
This conversation left me feeling like our sport is in good hands! Thank you to Oiselle, Girls on the Run, and Kara for this conversation!!!

Cj Albertson had a great performance at the Boston Marathon this year running a personal best time of 2:09:53 and placing 7th. This was his highest place in Boston yet and his fourth time running the race. He was also the top American finisher just two months after finishing 5th at the US Olympic Marathon Trials.
CJ is known for his untraditional ways of training and shares all about how he prepares for marathons in this conversation. He is also the Dad of two young kids, teaches and is a coach at Clovis Community College. CJ runs for Brooks running professionally and shares about how you can work really hard at something but still not hold it so tightly. I love his perspective on training and racing!
I met Jackie Hoffman at the Chicago Marathon a few years back! I was so excited to learn about what he is doing with Peace Runners in Chicago. He is the president and founder of Peace Runners. Through his own transformation, his vision and inspiration for Peace Runners 773 were fostered. He grew up in Garfield Park and has brought a running program back to the neighborhood that he grew up in. His own childhood inspired him to be a proponent for change. He really focuses on the life expectancy gap, specifically in his neighborhood in Chicago. It is much lower than the average life expectancy in the US.
Jackie played football in college and then professionally. Now he is a runner through and through! He just ran the NYC half marathon right before we recorded!
Peace Runners is a nonprofit organizations that advocates for health equity. Their programming empowers, educates, and brings awareness to holistic health and wellness through physical, mental, and social wellbeing while creating safe spaces for movement in our underserved communities.
This was such a joy and honor to talk to Jackie!

Kate Grace is back on the show today Kate is an Olympian from 2016 and a professional track athlete with Nike. She lives and trains in Boulder, Colorado. She is also a new mom navigating her professional running career as a first-time mom! I loved hearing how she is navigating this and making choices to train in a way that make sense and are healthy for her life and where she is.
Kate has a personal best in the 800m of 1:57.20. She was first on the podcast back in July of 2021 – which was the summer of Kate Grace! She won her first Diamond League and ran three personal bests in NINE days. So much fun to reconnect with her and reflect on all of that years later!
We’re cheering Kate on in the years to come as she navigates professional running and motherhood!

Rachel Drake is joining me on the podcast today! Rachel is a Nike Trail runner! She recently won the Black Canyon 100k which landed her a Golden Ticket to Western States! Western States will be her first 100 mile race!
Rachel is the mom of one and is married to Tyler Green, who was on the podcast back after her palced 2nd at Western STates a few years ago. Rachel is also a medical doctor about to start her residency this summer so we hear all about how she balances parenting, running and school. Wow – I am impressed!!
Rachel qualified for the Olympic Marathon trials at CIM in December when she race a 2:35 marathon. She opted not to run the trials, which was the plan all along as it was her training for the Black Canyon race. She did run in the 2020 Olympic Trials after running the standard in 2:40:17. Rachel has had success in the past training for a marathon in her buildup to her ultra.
I loved getting to know Rachel. She has a passion for the sisterhood of the sport and the camaraderie in the sport! I hope that you love this episode as much as I did!
