Submit ReviewIt’s our 160th episode and our final show for a while. We’re talking about what we’ve learned about being complete today after talking about it every Friday for a year. Evan talks about being more willing to take imperfect action and how freeing that is. Liz talks about helpful it is to use her whole self in the current situation. You can always go back and listen to our other episodes! We have enough for you to listen daily (week days) for an entire year.

Are you working hard on ministry but know inside that you’re lonely? There is a way to stay vulnerable and keep reaching out. The CSCs are the way out of that isolation. Today we’re talking about connection, but really, all the CSCs (Calm, Surrender, Centered, Connected, & Complete) give us the ability to be connected to God and others in a healthy way. You don’t want to have to wait 35 years to ever express your feelings, especially if you’re suppressing resentment—that just looks like lashing out in bitterness.

When you are centered, you are freed up to act in spite of the chaos, to shine like a light, to be whatever God designed you to be. Liz talks about her favorite homework that keeps her centered, and Evan talks about how nice it is not not be a social chameleon. It is important to distinguish within yourself the hard-wired things you can’t change and the caught and taught stuff that can and should be changing as you mature.

Surrender is the quickest route to peace—way more effective than squashing emotions. When we try to control our situation, it just ends up getting us stuck at point A instead of getting us closer to point B. It is possible to have much better self-talk through surrender. We don’t want to be double-minded.

You grab onto Calm by letting go, and it just takes a second. This week we are reflecting back on what we’ve learned making the show for an entire year! In 2 Corinthians, Paul talks about how the troubles of the world are not eternal—how he fixes his eyes on what is unseen because what is seen is temporary. Through prayer, we too can have a real-world perspective.

When God says ‘no’ to our prayers. We’re asking in faith for the best things we know how to ask for, and yet God still says ‘no’ sometimes. Our understanding of good and God’s understanding of good are different, but they should be growing closer together as we grow spiritually.

Despair is disconnect from reality. Your reality is full of hope because you have been created by God for a purpose. Unfortunately, it’s too easy in our culture to get swept away with distraction and get caught up in despair. Try to remember the unseen things like God’s faithfulness because, like we said earlier in the week, hope is invisible.

Our culture values the “you deserve it” and “watch out for #1” attitude. Of course, this kills relationships. Therefore, selflessness gets noticed because it’s very unusual. Christianity is the only religion we’ve found that balances love of God, self, and others. Discipline is a great way to combat selfish tendencies.

Our need for grace and a savior never changes, no matter how much we change in our spiritual development. The darkness in the way of surrender is pride, independence, & individuality. These three areas are a lie—a mask across reality. Being a light-bearer in the arena of surrender is going to stir up pain. The light we need here is humility, dependence, and vulnerability.

Your ministry is to shed light in a dark world. The darkness takes many forms. The darkness that steals your calm is busyness and feelings of overwhelm. “The degree of our faithfulness is a direct result of our regard for God’s faithfulness” ~ Beth Moore. Faith is about your actions, not your feelings. There is room, even in prayer, for doubt. Our attitude when we come to God is important. We can come to break down or build-up our connection to God. Greater faith goes through a process of filtering out doubts through investigation and prayer. So be encouraged in your doubts; if you come honestly to God with them, He will sort them out and your faith will grow. We discuss James 5:1-8 and John 20:24-31.

We read in James 1 that the way to ‘lacking nothing’ is by asking for wisdom. Does that make any sense to you? What we are asking God for shows us what’s in our hearts. Do you dare ask God for the things you want or need? What if He says ‘no’? But Jesus says we have not because we ask not. What would it take for you to ask God for anything in faith? We discuss James 1:5-8 again as well as James 1:16-18. The James passage talks bout God as the father of lights, giving every good thing his children. When we understand God’s character, we are freer to ask Him for the good things He wants to give us.

Stress is an indicator of a lack of faith. Too harsh? Just ask yourself the question, “Do I trust God in [insert thing you’re stressed about]?” Your answer may surprise you. We’re not called to blind faith. We have many examples of God’s faithfulness to observe and base our faith on. This should eliminate doubt. We’re talking about or favorite literature this week. Today Evan shares a couple Jack Gilbert poems and Liz reads some Frances Hodgson Burnett. We love fiction because, in a way, all communication is fiction. We cannot communicate the truth like God can because of our limited understanding. Frantic, panicky energy feels productive and easy sometimes, but it’s really just setting you up for a more difficult time later. Through faith we’re plugged into God, and this is where we get our power. It’s like an electric plug—if there’s something in between the plug and the outlet, no power is getting through. Or it’s like how movement works. Every movement action requires force from the earth—every step forward, every time you lift your groceries, every time you stand up from your desk, etc., etc., is impossible without the earth there to push off of. Our spiritual lives work the same way.

There are lots of ways to surrender, but one easy way is to picture the things you struggle to release as being held with an open hand. This is a true representation of these things because we don’t really control the outcomes.

Calm is not emotional suppression. It’s about having a way out of anxiety when it comes up—because anxiety is part of life. Anxiety comes when we’re unsure about the future, when we get too busy, and when those around us sin (we live in a broken world). So calm is a method to move through the anxiety into freedom, abundance, and peace—which is part of our birthright as children of God.

Who are we to think we’ll ever be done growing? This is how we act though, isn't it? We wait around for some stability to or some point where we’re just resting, but this is an unreal fantasy future. Today we talk about being complete in God’s gentleness, and share a powerful story from Beth Moore about brushing a huge knot out of her daughter’s hair.

We tend too be thin-skinned. We think getting our feelings hurt is harm—that we’re being damaged. Christians need to distinguish the difference between hurt hand harm. When we approach others without gentleness, the pain we can cause may turn into harm. But God in His grace has the power to heal and redeem hurts as well as harms.

Humiliation is really shame, but unfortunately some Christian groups tend to think of it as synonymous with humility. There’s no room in the Church for anyone to have to eat humble pie. Real humility is having a correct view of yourself—not putting self down or getting lost in shame. True humility is a guard against humiliation.

“What’s so important in His sight that is needs to be done this way?” This is one of Evan’s favorite quotes and it’s all about surrender to God’s plan. Today we’re talking about gentleness. Do you trust God to be gentle? We never fully understand the plan, so this takes a lot of surrender and faith.

Anger is a warning light on the dashboard of our emotional cars. We tend to respond in one of two ways: ignore it, or rage about it. Both are destructive and an attempt to control outcomes. Both feel like they give us power but don’t. Gentleness the true path to deal with anger. Gentleness neither ignores the issue or exaggerates. God in His gentleness is our example.

Goodness, in the biblical sense, is often unpopular. It’s constantly pushing for growth and change. It’s a light exposing things about ourselves we don’t like. There is an edge to goodness that is opposed to the high cultural values of the rugged individual and group identity. When we cross these lines in goodness, sparks can fly, but it’s important to push through for the sake of healthy relationship.

What does it look like to want what’s really good for another person? To act in a good way toward them? Part of it is laying down your desire to be right all the time and picking up a desire for them to be right—as in right in line with God’s design—what’s best for them. Goodness in action sometimes feels bad, because it may be rebuke or a correction of some kind; we need to change and God’s goal is to help us change and grow. The things we’re really after in life, like peace and abundance, comes from discipline which grows out of God’s goodness, things like God getting us back on track.

Waiting is hard because we’re also designed for glory—we catch glimpses of the way it should be and get heartsick having to wait. We struggle so much in the meantime—but if there wasn’t a “meantime” to struggle/pray/worship God, it would not be as full of a life. Patience is the difference between choosing to wait well and being stressed and anxious and in a hurry all the time.

Have you ever said to yourself, “Why am I not learning patience quickly enough!?” It’s hard to be gentle with ourselves. We’re often our harshest critic. But we don’t have to do that to ourselves. God is all about giving us room to grow, to practice patience. After all, if God just granted our prayers as soon as we prayed them, we wouldn't need patience.

You’re going to be waiting, but will you be patient or not? Waiting often leads us to ask “why?”: Why is this not happening faster? Why did that delay or hang-up happen to me? We get there through prayer.

Forgiveness and reconciliation are different, but a lot of Christians tend to think of them as the same thing. Forgiveness is something you can do by yourself in your heart, but reconciliation requires cooperation from the other person. Forgiveness is mandatory for Christians, reconciliation is a command as well, but we can only do our part.

Minimization is another huge enemy of true forgiveness and grace. But we do it because we can’t face the pain of owning our sin—whether it’s against God or others. Fear of strong emotions also drive us to minimization. Who wants to admit they’re depressed or an angry person? But God can take all of this and fold it into His work on the cross.

What is self-control? Is it just beating the flesh into submission? Christians tend to think this is what it means; that we’ve got to attack our fleshly desires head on. Evan & Liz believe it’s more about nurturing the spirit. Christian self-control is about putting aside our will and taking on the Holy Spirit’s will.

Brene Brown says Serpentining is what we do to avoid POTENTIAL shame and hurt. We all do this either through procrastination, falsely positive emotions, or distractions from stress of life. We all know life is stressful and full of problems, but after we’ve avoided our problems for a little while, it’s amazing to see that the problems are still there after we finish our evasive actions.

There’s a difference between putting your toe over the line & dashing across it. It is possible to use vulnerability as a shield against healthy relationships. You’re the only one who can tell if you’re sharing to foster or repel relationship. Trapped in Woulda, shoulda, coulda… Whether you’re trying to be perfect or just not mess up at all, no one can maintain that level of performance! The pressure on yourself is another kind of vulnerability armor we use to shield ourselves from shame & judgment. We need to realize that the standard of perfection is subjective, so even if you always please yourself, others may still deal out judgment.

If there ever was an activity where the all-important key to understanding it is to ‘know thyself,’ it’s this one. Today we’re talking about the things we do to take the edge off. There are a thousand different ways, like TV, candy, alcohol, tobacco, business, gossip, or news just to name a few. Any of these can conceivably be just fine, but we know, if we look hard, if our heart is looking for self-care or an escape.

What do you think about when you hear the word “vulnerable”? Weakness? All week we’re going to talk about what Brené Brown calls vulnerability armor—the methods we use to avoid vulnerability. Today we’re talking about foreboding joy, i.e. rehearsing tragedy and perpetual disappointment.
