This week our Recovery Minute is about the Impossibility of Serenity.
Serenity goes hand and hand with the recovery process. At first it seems unobtainable...almost impossible. We start thinking we will never be able to live in a serene state of mind inside the chaos that is our brokenness and our hurt. But, early on in our recovery journey we learn that we must give up control and surrender to our higher power. That is where the serenity prayer comes in to teach us to be okay in the moments where we can or cannot change the outcome. It teaches us to live in the moment and for us in recovery, it's crucial for us to maintain the one day at a time lifestyle. In what areas of your life can you apply serenity today?
The Serenity Prayer:
God, grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change,
the courage to change the things I can,
and the wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time,
enjoying one moment at a time;
accepting hardship as a pathway to peace;
taking, as Jesus did,
this sinful world as it is,
not as I would have it;
trusting that You will make all things right
if I surrender to Your will;
so that I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with You forever in the next.
Amen.

S4 Ep 039 - stay the course :
The recovery process isn’t always a mountain top experience. The excitement and the new recovery smell will soon fade. It’s then that we will open ourselves up to burnout and fatigue. It’s then in our weariness that we must press on. In this episode let's talk about perseverance in our recovery and practical ways we can implement them into our daily recovery. We are also looking at several scripture references for perseverance including :
•James 1:2-4 :
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”
•Galatians 6:9 :
“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
•2 Corinthians 11: 23-33 :
“Are they servants of Christ, I am a better one. I am talking like a madman with far greater labors, far more imprisonments, with countless beatings, and often near death. Five times I received at the hands of the Jews the 40 lashes, three times I was beating with rods. Once I was stoned Three times I was shipwrecked a night and a day. I was adrift at sea. On frequent journeys in danger from rivers danger from robbers danger from my own people, danger from Gentiles danger in the city, danger in the wilderness, danger at sea, and danger from false brothers in toil and in hardship through many a sleepless night, in hunger and thirst, often without food and cold, and exposure. And apart from the other things, there is the daily pressure on me of my anxiety for all the churches. Who is weak, am I not weak? Who is made to fall, and I am not indignant. If I must boast I will boast of the things that show my weakness, the God and Father of the Lord Jesus, He who is blessed for ever knows that I am not lying…”
•1 Corinthians 10:13 :
"No trial has overtaken you that is not faced by others and God is faithful, He will not let you be tried beyond what you are able to bear. But with the trial, will also provide a way out so that you may be able to endure it. “
In recovery it is certain that we will become weary along the journey..but when we back our recovery with God's word and with Christ as our higher power, we can endure the seasons of weariness and Stay the Course!

This week our Recovery Minute is on Eating Scripture.
To keep the theme going from our last episode, food is not my comfort..Jesus is, this Recovery Minute is on the topic of eating. But instead of digging in to our favorite comfort food, this Recovery Minute is on the importance of eating our daily bread to help maintain a healthy recovery journey.

S4 EP 38 - food is not my comfort..Jesus is! :
Recovery is not just to help alcoholics and substance abusers. The same principles and steps that we work in recovery can be applied to most everything we deal with in life. Most of us whether we realize it or not struggle with unhealthy food habits. Emotional eating habits are just as easy to struggle with as a nicotine addiction. So why isn't there more conversations being held about recovery from food abuse? This heavily stigmatized habit needs more light and on this episode, Josh and Drew sit down with Stacey Smith and break down recovery from emotional eating and how we can live a life outside of food as our comfort.

S4 EP 37 : broken but restored -
At the heart of what we do here at Unashamed Recovery is to reduce the shame and stigma surrounding addiction and recovery and to show those lost in addiction that there is a way out. We do that by sharing stories just like this episode, stories of hope. This story is Brent's, who was left broken from years trapped in addiction that had led to meth, but after an encounter with God, he found himself restored. Check out Brent's full story and see how this broken addict that was once selling dope in the hospital parking lot is now selling chickens in the high school parking lot.

To go along with our last episode, the c word : codependency & recovery, this Recovery Minute is all about Expectations and how we treat others in the way we treat ourselves. Sometimes we project the expectations we have on ourself onto others. We need to remember to view others with the same tolerance and gentleness we want in our own life.
Next Monday, March 20th, is our next episode, Ep 037 Broken but Restored with guest Brent "Tank" Gilbert.
We are back for another season! We kickstart season 4 with a topic episode on something that is becoming more and more common in recovery circles around the country....CODEPENDENCY!
On this first episode of season 4, Josh sits down with Aislin Jayroe of Open Minds Counseling in Philadelphia, MS. We figured why not jump head first into season 4 and that is what we are doing with this topic on codependency. So much confusion, myth, and misinformation surrounds the very idea of codependency that it puts fear and anxiety into our minds before we even begin to understand it. Josh and Aislin break down what is codependency and connect the dots on how we can implement a game winning strategy in our recovery against it and also what the Bible says about codependency. You just may be surprised what we found as we destigmatise the c word.
