James is a radio futurologist - a writer, consultant and public speaker on radio’s future. He is Managing Editor of podnews.net, a daily podcast newsletter, and runs media.info, the media information website. He is a Director of the Canadian local radio broadcaster VISTA Radio.

James has worked in radio since 1989 as an award-winning copywriter, presenter, and internet strategist. In 2001 he joined the original Virgin Radio in London, where he was Digital Media Director: launching the world’s first streaming radio smartphone app in March 2005. In 2007 he joined the BBC to work on the BBC iPlayer for radio, achieving a dramatic increase in the service’s audio quality, and being part of the team that laid the foundations for the UK Radioplayer. Since leaving the BBC in 2009, he has worked for a variety of businesses, including the receiver and silicon manufacturers Pure and Frontier Silicon, Radioplayer, Futuri Media, talkSPORT as well as a variety of media companies in Europe, North America, Asia and Australia; helping them focus on the benefits and challenges that new platforms bring to their business.

He is one of the organisers of Next Radio, the UK radio ideas conference each September, and has worked with the world’s largest radio conference, Radiodays Europe, since its inception.

Welcome to episode 26 of the Wonder Junkie Podcast ft Will Irvine from Hunter & The Bear. 

If you haven't heard of Hunter & The Bear before, they're inspired by artists such as The Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bruce Springsteen. Will & Jimmy started to write and perform as a duo. Jimmy took responsibility for lead guitar, mandolin and vocal whilst beside him Will not only played rhythm guitar but also kick drum and joint lead vocals.

That's a very short summary, but hopefully, you get the idea. Anyway, was really great to catch up with Will, have known him and the guys for a few years now and finally got a chance to say thank you for letting me use their song "Burn It Up" as the music for Wonder Junkie. 

We chatted about a whole load of different things, from going to Uni in Newcastle, touring with Eric Clapton and how it can actually be harder to play in front of 5 people rather than 5000 people.

Hello and welcome to episode 25 of the Wonder Junkie Podcast ft the musical composers of the new tv series, Genius, Will Henshall & neuroscientist Dr. Julia Mossbridge. Genius is the new tv series presented by National Geographic with the first-ever scripted series, based on the Walter Isaacson book ‘Einstein: His Life and Universe’

The cast includes Geoffrey Rush as professor Einstein, Johnny Flynn as Albert in his youth and Emily Watson as the scientist’s second wife — and first cousin — Elsa Einstein. Over 10 episodes, the series takes einstein’s story beyond the halls of academia to explore his struggles to be a good husband and father, and a man of principle during a period of global unrest. His daringly creative mind often landed him in trouble with his loved ones and peers, but also helped him to usher in ground-breaking discoveries that reshaped modern science.

For this series, a collection of musical pieces has been created, inspired by Albert Einstein. It has been scientifically designed around the perfect formula to fuel our genius and enhance our concentration… so that is what this episode is all about as I speak to Will Henshall & neuroscientist Dr. Julia Mossbridge. Spoiler alert; Einstein would've been a Slayer fan ;) 

Welcome to episode 24 of the Wonder Junkie Podcast, featuring historian Matt Brosnan and curator at the Imperial War Museum and the new exhibition, People Power: Fighting For Peace.

People Power: Fighting for Peace, is the UK’s first major exhibition to explore the evolution of the anti-war movement from the First World War to the present day. The exhibition tells the stories of individual and collective acts of anti-war protest, and the varied forms of creative expression used to campaign against war. In the exhibit, you can view rare items such as a handwritten poem by Siegfried Sassoon and original sketches for the peace symbol.

Matt Brosnan, Historian, and Curator of People Power: Fighting for Peace at IWM says: “This exhibition is the first of its kind and displays a number of fascinating items which have never been exhibited before. In IWM’s Centenary year, this major exhibition continues our mission to explore war and conflict from multiple perspectives – highlighting the peace movement and its important role in British history.”

Due to Matt having a limited amount of time on the opening day of the exhibit my interview with him only lasted about 10 minutes which isn’t quite long enough for a podcast in its own right. This is ok though, as it’s allowed me to get more creative with this episode and create a short audio documentary. For those of you who might remember, I used to produce The Blues Magazine Show with Big Boy Bloater on TeamRock Radio and whilst producing that show, we created a documentary called “The 21st Century Blues” which is still one of my favourite things I’ve ever done in radio and broadcast. So, I thought this would be a great opportunity to dust off my producing hat and hopefully create something really special for a subject matter that deserves all the attention it can get.

My thanks to the wonderful team at the Imperial War Museum and to Matt Brosnan for making time to speak to me about the exhibit, if I could describe the exhibit in one simple way it would be; thought provoking.

Welcome to episode 22 of the Wonder Junkie Podcast featuring Touker Suleyman of BBC's Dragons Den talking all about the new drama "The Founder" starring Michael Keaton. 

The Founder is the true story of how Ray Kroc (Michael Keaton), a struggling salesman from Illinois, met Mac (John Carroll Lynch) and Dick McDonald (Nick Offerman), who were running a burger operation in 1950s Southern California. Kroc was impressed by the brothers' speedy system of making the food and saw franchise potential. Kroc soon maneuvers himself into a position to be able to pull the company from the brothers and create a multi-billion dollar empire.

Touker Suleyman has 40 years' retail and manufacturing experience and is best known as the founder of quintessentially British menswear brand, Hawes & Curtis and the man credited with reinventing the seminal 90s womenswear label, Ghost.

After a false start in accountancy, Touker kicked off his retail career at the age of 18. He entered into a joint venture in a leather factory and soon after established a clothing manufacturer supplying to some of the biggest names of the British high street.

Touker’s rise in the business world has not been without its challenge. In the 1980s auditors identified significant debt behind one of his business ventures and he had six weeks to find £2 million pounds. Unfortunately, a potential investor pulling out at the last minute, forcing the business into liquidation, and he was forced to start again from nothing.

Touker went on to build a thriving international clothing manufacturer which still sits at the heart of his businesses and is now a serial entrepreneur, backing seven retail and commercial property businesses. Touker has a keen interest in supporting start-ups and invests in a number of small British companies.

And of course, he now sits on BBC Dragons Den and has invested so far in the Den: £575, 000. 

So Touker knows a thing or two about business and was a great person to speak to about how much of the film meets reality...

Hello and welcome to episode 20 of the Wonder Junkie Podcast featuring Sean Ayling from the Pig & Porter Brewery...mmmm beer. 

Great to speak to Sean at his brewery in Tunbridge Wells, if you haven't heard of Pig & Porter before, it's a tale of fate and serendipity, ability and determination. And a love of beer that keeps leading them to new places. Like many good things, Pig and Porter was conceived around a kitchen table. On one side, Sean, positively evangelic about great modern beers who’d been brewing in his shed for several years “because it was cheaper than buying it”. On the other, Robin, a keen amateur cook recovering from several eye operations and disillusioned with recruitment. In the middle, a pile of bottles and some burgers.

From that conversation the “kernel” of an idea was formed. Beer and burgers replaced tea and cake at the Ashburnham Flower Show and Fete, and then they were asked to do barn dances and a wedding. They took the pig by the tail and started the business.

Sean is one of the nicest guys you'll meet and will be the official brewer for Primordial Radio, so it was great to speak to him about how the beer is made, his journey into starting his own business and what new beers he's currently working on!

If you haven't heard of Attitude Is Everything before, they improve Deaf and disabled people’s access to live music by working in partnership with audiences, artists, and the music industry.

They support the music industry to understand Deaf and disabled people’s access requirements at music venues and festivals by building equality into the strategic process using a Charter of Best Practice. The ethos of the Charter is that Deaf and disabled people should be as independent as they want to be at live music events and over 100 venues and festivals have already signed up.
