Our first stop on our eating in Athens tour was Seabear Oyster Bar, where we sat down with Chef Patrick, and his partner Peter, about the Athens dining scene.

We talked about what to eat in Athens, from the high-end dining spots to the greasy spoons. Of course, it took a little more prodding to get the low down on the college dining scene. I wanted to visit Athens because it is a fun college town. I loved our food at Seabear, but I wanted to pretend to be a college student for a few days! And Chef Patrick and Peter didn't disappoint with their recommendations

We went to Memphis for one thing really. The top of our list of things to do in Memphis was eat BBQ. When doing our research, one place kept coming up as one of the best Memphis BBQ joints: Central BBQ.

We arrived just before lunch time to talk Memphis BBQ with Rodger Sapp, one of the owners of Central BBQ. From his early beginnings, eating BBQ with his father, to becoming passionate about BBQ, it all lead him to Central BBQ.

In the lead up to the #USChowDown, there were was one story we anticipated telling that we were super excited, and a little anxious, about telling. The story is the one that leads us to showing up in Georgia, as guests of honor at a Macon BBQ party, hosted by a person who claims to make the Best Rub For Your Butt - Mama Honey's Hiney Rub

Looking for something to do in Louisiana, before noon, on a weekday? How about drinking down a few pints of Baton Rouge craft beer. That's just what we did when we met Joe from Southern Craft Brewing Company. When he's not a project manager for large oil and gas clients, he's brewing beer, just through the back door of his uniquely located tasting room. We pulled off the highway, and wound our way to the back of an industrial park, and there's where we found the Southern Craft Brewing Company. We talked with Joe about his transition from home brewer to official brew master. And, he's off and running with award winning beers with names like Pompous Pelican, Red Stick Ryle, and Swamp Sting.

As soon as we bit into the first bit of a breakfast sandwich at Tiger Deaux-Nuts Baton Rouge, we knew we had to learn the story behind this little bit of donut heaven in Louisiana. Jeff of Tiger Deaux-Nuts explained just what was on one of the best breakfast sandwiches we've ever eaten. First off, it included a special sausage, and it was sandwiched between two slices of their famous donuts.

Jeff was a man with a dream. A donut dream. On this week's episode of our food travel podcast, not only did we talk about a locally famous breakfast sandwich, but we learned how he came up with the idea of creating an artisan donut shop in Baton Rouge.

Part 2 of our chat with Jay Ducote, the unofficial food mayor of Baton Rouge. Whereas our first episode talked about Jay's transition from typical office worker to food TV celebrity, this episode focuses on food travel. And, in particular BBQ and food travel.

Our chat with Jay quickly turned from BBQ to Louisiana food specialties, including a special local sausage. We don't want to give too much away as there will be special episode and blog post later about boudin. Jay also provides his advice on what to eat in Baton Rouge, including oysters which rival those available in New Orleans. We talked with Jay about local Baton Rouge chefs and their restaurants, focusing on local cuisine and use of fresh, local ingredients.

We sat down with Jay Ducote at Tin Roof Beer in Baton Rouge, over a few dozen craft beers (yes a few dozen). We learned about all of his various culinary careers. And, he is one busy guy. He started his food blog, Bite and Booze, during his daily lunch breaks. The blog started from just wanting to share the stories of the meals he was eating around Baton Rouge.

From that modest start he became the unofficial food mayor of Baton Rouge. Jay launched his own BBQ sauce and rub, his own wine, his own food podcast, and even his own local radio show. And, yes, he was a runner up on the Next Food Network Star. We talk about how he made it to TV!

We have several weeks of great culinary stories coming to you on the podcast. We've already published a few, but there are more to come. This episode is just an overview of our thoughts on the #USChowDown, and how we are still a little surprised that we survived our first American road trip!

#USChowDown was a huge success, even if we returned to Bangkok a little wider around the waist than when we left. But, if we came back after eating all that food thinner than before, that would have been strange.

We are craft beer novices, as we’ve mentioned before when we talked craft beer with The Opportunistic Travelers on episode 09 of season 2. But, during our #USChowDown 6 week long US culinary road trip, we wanted to learn as much as possible about American craft beer. And, we were schooled in Louisiana, at Parish Brewing Company.

We ate so many great meals in our few days exploring the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Neither of us had ever been to Mississippi before, and frankly, as Northerners, we probably carried some preconceived notions of what Mississippi is all about. But, within the few days we spent exploring the best Mississippi Gulf Coast eats, all of these notions were dispelled.

On this week’s episode of our food travel podcast, we sit down with Kait and Jessie, the partners behind Greenhouse on Porter in Ocean Springs. Not only are they making some amazing biscuits, but in a few short years, they have created a neighborhood cafe, set, yes, inside a green house on Porter Ave. We had breakfast there three days in a row, and each day had loads of great conversations with locals, who welcomed us with open arms.

We also sit down with Gindy Taranto of Taranto’s Crawfish House in D’Iberville, Mississippi. Set on the corner of a country road, and packed to the brim during a busy weekday lunch, they have some of the best po’boy sandwiches in the region. We talk with her about what it means to make a mean po’boy.
