Back in March I had the opportunity to attend a screening of Hell or High Seas, a sailing documentary detailing the mission of a couple of sailors to round Cape Horn in the name of Suicide Prevention Awareness, mostly among Veterans and First Responders.

Former Navy Rescue Swimmer, Taylor Grieger had gotten out of the military and had a very rough go of it, actually sitting on a beach with a Gun to his head, and pulling the trigger.

To say nothing happened would be a lie. A lot happened. The gun didn’t go off, and Taylor was alive, but his entire view of life had changed, and he was determined to do something to help the rest of us understand the issues faced by Veterans, First Responders, and the like, that are trained to respond to stressful, traumatic situations, then let loose into the world without the tools to deal with the aftermath.

We talk with Stephen O’Shea, Taylor’s childhood friend and co-founder of the Skeleton Crew Sailing team, and original participant in the mission around Cape Horn. He details some of the issues surrounding the suicide problem we all face, and also his own journey with Taylor, including how he got involved, all about the mission and the sailing, and where things stand today.

This episode we chat with Singer/Songwriter/Sailor Shay love, who has released a new single called Spring Rain, hopes to release an EP over the summer as her and her husband cruise the islands, and wants to end up in NYC in the offseason, playing gigs as she goes along. See her Linktree here.

We spoke as they were moored up in Key West back in January and were planning their trip to St. Thomas, which is where they are as this is released.

She knew she wanted to travel and be a musician from a young age, ending up working on a cruise ship as a singer. After a bit of that, she realized this wasn’t what she was looking for either spiritually or environmentally, so she headed to USVI and looked for a cheap sailboat to buy and fix up. She ended up rooming on a boat in the harbor, and the rest is history.

Greetings Sailors! This episode we catch up with Ocean Racer Peter Gibbons Neff, who is preparing to race the Mini Transat this coming September! The Race is a solo, two leg race from France to Guadalupe on 21ft One Design sailboats, and promises each sailor a proper ocean racing challenge.

We spoke with Peter two boat shows ago as he was getting his campaign started, now, along with sponsors like Fawcett marine and a robust Go-Fund Me program, he is taking his last steps later this spring and summer towards getting to the start line.

We talk all about the race, the boat, how he got his start in sailing and some of the adventures in life he has had since sailing with his family when he was a kid. We talk about US Patriot sailing, the umbrella organization he sails under, along with our other recent guest Ronnie Simpson, on his Open 50 Sparrow, who will be participating in the Global Solo Challenge, around the same time as the Mini Transat.

We talk about the cruising she has been doing since we last spoke about 4 or 5 years ago, aboard Sahula, a 40ft. steel Van de Stadt. We talk about Covid and sailing and living in New Zealand, the Americas Cup coming to town, the new documentary “The Real Deal, Larry Pardey: Legendary Sailor & Adventurer” which came out earlier in 2022, The Port Townsend and Annapolis Boat Shows, and her and Larry being inducted into the Sailing Hall of Fame this past fall in Newport.

It is always great to talk to Lin, I felt so bad I didn’t get a chance to talk to her in person at the boat show last fall, she is a popular guest at the show and the booth she shares with The Boat Galley, is always busy, even more so when she is there. She always had a crowd waiting to talk to her when I was stopping by, and just didn’t get the chance to have a chat in person. Shes got lots of plans for the future, hopefully with another visit to the Annapolis Boat Show in a few years!

Welcome to Boat show Season in the greater Chesapeake Bay and Annapolis area! Well, ok, it was back in October, and today is Thanksgiving, so sorry for the delay, I’m doing my best over here trying to wrangle all the Stuff!

This episode, number 161, will be 7 interviews, two from the Power Boat Show, and the rest from the Sailboat Show. Next episode will be 7 more interviews from the Sailboat Show.

Overall it was a great time going to both shows for the first time ever, running into all the folks I got to run into, getting the interviews I was able to get, setting up for future interviews, and meeting fans of the show, and new friends from all over! We did run into a wall of frustration, and too much humanity stuffed into one small area on Saturday of the Sailboat Show, Too Peopley! I did stress out a bit too much, trying to figure out my place in the world, the future of this podcast, when and if I’ll ever get to do some real ocean sailing, get a bigger boat, how to afford life as it is, never mind afford it with all that in mind. It’s complicated, and really shouldn’t be, isn’t that the point? For now we will just Keep on Keepin’ On!

Dan and Marlene aboard Sailing Trance

On this episode of the Shooting the Breeze Sailing Podcast (STBSP) we have the first part of a great chat with Dan and Marlene Reasoner of Sailing Trance, an Island Packet 42 aboard which they have recently completed a circumnavigation of the world. They blogged the entire journey over at Sailing Trance Dot Com.

After a lifetime of sailing Thistles around the country with family and friends, Dan and Marlene decided it was time to sail around the world, and in fairly short order, they found the boat, fitted it out, did some shakedown sailing, and promptly left for the adventurous horizons in late 2019. Covid hit after making it through the Panama Canal, but did not deter them from continuing the journey. It may have changed, but mostly for the better as they were able to visit places that may normally have been off the table, such as Glacier National Park in Alaska. After getting whaled by a whale, they made their way back down the coast, then pushed off for Hawaii and the South Pacific. They adapted their plans based on Covid Closures of Australia and New Zealand, and in Spring of this year, finished the journey back in Tolchester, MD. I followed along loosely on the blog and Facebook, and realized sometime around July that they had finished the trip.

Also in this episode, we look forward to going to the Annapolis Boat Shows, both Power and Sail. This Saturday, October 8th, 2022, we will be attending the Power Boat Show with Captain Boomies, looking forward to trying to meet Captain Sandy from Below deck. Amanda and Darren Seltzer, formerly of Sailing Panda on the YouTubes, are now proud new owners of an Adventure Charter Business called passage.com/adventure">Outer Passage and a performance Multi-Hull Neel 45 Trimaran, and they are looking for new guests to come along for the ride!

The last time we spoke with them, they were holed up in Belfast aboard Panda, an Amel Sharki 39, which they subsequently sailed down through the UK, France, Spain, and Portugal, through the Gibraltar Straits, the Med, into Albania, and ultimately Venice, where they sold the boat and conjured up this new project with the help of Darren’s Brother.

After purchasing the new Trimaran, they sailed it across the pond, did some work, had a homecoming after more than 2 years, sailed up the US East Coast to Maine, and are now in Newport for the Boat show! They are also planning on heading to the Chesapeake Bay before showing up at the Annapolis Sailboat Show in Mid-October. They will be offering Rides!!!!

Greetings! Welcome to Episode 157 of The Shooting The Breeze Sailing Podcast (STBSP) where we do some late night Porchsettin at Hances Point Yacht Club with our buddy and frequent, now annual, guest, Luke Wager.

We talk about many things, but mainly his Delivery trip onboard a clients newly purchased Tayana 32 Pilothouse from Florida to Connecticut back in late June and Early July of this year.

We have some drinks and some good chatting on the Porch, just over from the firepit, late on a Saturday Night, after most regular folks have gone to bed.

I recorded the intro to this a week later, on a wonderful Saturday afternoon sail up and down the North East River. Contrary to my thoughts at the time, I have already recorded my September Episode, a new interview with Darren and Amanda from what used to be Sailing Panda, but is now passage.com/">Outer Passage, as they transition into Performance Tri-maran sailors, offering Adventure Charters and Passages on a Neel 45 Tri up and down the East Coast and the Caribbean. They plan on being at the Annapolis Sailboat Show and around the Bay this Fall, check them out and get a spot on board for a daysail! Tell them you found them thru here, and get…….. I don’t know, a nice sail?

Also, The You Tube Tent at the boat show is now shaping up, so looking forward to that, and spending 4 days in town for the show. Let’s Meet Up!
