Submit ReviewWe are through three nights in the Stanley Cup Playoffs and there is no shortage of storylines. Frank and Jason went through every series and where things stand right now, but first they dug into what’s going on in Calgary. Frank explained what happened behind the scenes and why Brad Treliving decided to move on after almost a decade in the GM chair.
They then got into the big storylines from the playoffs starting with the goaltending controversy brewing down in Minnesota. After winning game one, the Wild switched up their starting goaltender and then got smoked in game two. Frank thinks this was the right decision and wondered if more teams will start looking at things the way the Wild do.
That wasn’t the only controversial topic from night three. A missed call in overtime between the Hurricanes and Islanders had Isles fans up in arms. Leafs fans are also upset that Michael Bunting was given a three game suspension. Frank and Jason actually sided with Leafs fans on this one, saying that they thought the punishment was too harsh.
They wrapped it up by talking about the teams that are in danger of going down 2-0 despite having home ice advantage. Which team needs a win the most? They gave their thoughts. They also brought in Tyler for a fresh edition of Buy or Sell.

Part two of our playoff preview is up now and after going through all four Eastern Conference matchups in episode 209, Jason and Frank turned their attention to the Western Conference where there are some very, very tantalizing matchups. Before they got into that though, they did talk about a few coaching changes that were made over the last week. Both Anaheim and Columbus made changes behind the bench and now there are two openings in spots where Connor Bedard could land. That led to some lottery talk now that the odds are finalized.
They finally jumped into the playoff previews, starting with the conference’s top seed, the Vegas Golden Knights, taking on the Winnipeg Jets. Can Connor Hellebuyck steal this series? Can Jack Eichel take a step forward in his first-ever playoff appearance? They debated these two questions.
Moving along, they dug into the Avs vs Kraken matchup which is a series that Frank thinks has sweep potential. It’s the first taste of playoff hockey for the Kraken and that fan base will be rocking for their home games, that’s the main reason why Gregor thinks they will steal at least one game from the Avs. The Oilers and Kings will also be meeting in a rematch of their epic first-round series from last year. In their 2022 series, Connor McDavid averaged two points per game. Can the Kings slow him down? Even if they do, the Oilers depth might be good enough to power them through according to Jason.
To wrap it up, they hit on the Wild and Stars, a series that might be the most evenly matched of the four. Jason and Frank outlined the keys to victory on either side of that matchup. Tyler also popped in with his picks and a new edition of Buy or Sell.

Part one of our Stanley Cup Playoff preview is here. Frank and Jason went through every series in the Eastern Conference today on the podcast. Before they got into the playoff talk though, they did hit on the sweeping changes that occurred in Pittsburgh on Friday with Ron Hextall, Brian Burke, and Chris Pryor all being fired after the franchise’s 16-year playoff streak ended. Could the Penguins be eyeing up Kyle Dubas to be their next General Manager? Frank answered that question on the show. They also quickly hit on changes that could come in Ottawa and Calgary.
They then jumped into the playoff previews, starting with the top-seeded Boston Bruins, who set multiple records during the regular season. Will it be a waste of eight days for the Florida Panthers, or do they have a shot at winning this series? Frank and Jason broke down if an upset is possible.
They then moved on to the series that a lot of people think could feature an upset. The Islanders got into the playoffs in the final days of the regular season and now, they’re facing a Hurricanes team that hasn’t been playing their best hockey down the stretch. Jason thinks an upset can happen but Frank isn’t taking the bait.
They also hit on the rematch between the Maple Leafs and Lightning, and whether or not the Leafs can exercise their demons and finally move on. The Bolts are hurting right now, but can they flip the switch for the playoffs. They wrapped it up with the ‘Battle of the Hudson River’ between the Rangers and the Devils. The two were once again split on who they thought were going to win this one

The final week of the regular season is here and there is still a lot left undecided. Frank and Jason did eventually get into the playoff races, but they started off by talking about who’s in the driver seat in the race for Connor Bedard. Coming in last only gives a team a roughly 25% chance of landing the first overall pick, but there are a lot of fan bases hoping their favorite teams lose out this week and increase their chances of landing the Regina Pats forward.
Last night, the Boston Bruins set the record for most wins in a season. Frank thinks this record has an asterisk next to it and explained why. Jason fought back a little bit on that. They also butted heads during their awards talk, specifically around San Jose Shark’s defenceman Erik Karlsson and his Norris Trophy chances. Things got heated as they debated how much voters should value points in the race.
They then got into the playoff races for each conference. Pittsburgh and Calgary are both in big trouble, do either have a chance? Frank and Jason debated that before getting into some of the seeding races. There is only one series that’s already determined, so there is a lot to play for in the next five days.
Tyler Yaremchuk then jumped on for Buy or Sell, which started off with a very cheesy debate. They then got into some of the spicy quotes we got this weekend from Bo Horvat and Chris Wideman. They wrapped it up with some talk about how many 60-goal scorers we could see next season.

4:30 - Bruins record season

Jason and Frank are back with episode 207 of The DFO Rundown, brought to you by Betano.ca. To start things off today, Frank outlined a new piece he’s working on for the site that goes into the total amount that teams spend on players. The salary cap was supposed to mean that all teams spend the same on players, but that’s not the case. Frank told us who the biggest spenders are around the league and Jason gave his take on how that correlates to winning.
Injuries are a big story right now around the league with both the Avalanche and Lightning, last year’s Stanley Cup Finalists, dealing with a barrage of injuries. Cale Makar, Tanner Jeannot, and others could be missing as those two teams prepare for their first-round series. Frank and Jason broke down all those situations and talked about the Bolt’s first-round matchup against the Maple Leafs, which is now locked in.
They also hit on the Eastern Conference playoff race today on the show. The Penguins are limping to the finish line while the Panthers continue their red-hot play. Who’s going to get it? They gave their thoughts on that and also talked about some higher seeds that could be vulnerable in the first round.
Tyler also stopped by for a new edition of Fill in the Blank where he asked them
1:00 - Complete spending report
10:10 - Avs injuries
19:40 - Eastern playoff race
22:50 - Lightning injuries
30:55 - Western playoff race
44:00 - State of the Flames

There are just two weeks to go in the regular season and things are still largely undecided in both conferences. Frank and Jason dug into things today on the pod but before that, they had an impromptu discussion about the state of the NHL. They talked about new NHLPA Head Marty Walsh and his potential impact, how the league’s growth has been stunted, and where they need to improve on things. That led to Tyler telling a story about Frank and Jason’s reputation with the kids on TikTok.
They also talked about the fact that offence is up again this season and whether or not this trend is sustainable. Jason has some numbers that point to this change not being an anomaly.
With some teams gearing up for the playoffs, others are getting ready for busy summers and for some teams, coaching changes could be coming. Frank gave his list of coaches that could be on the hot seat and talked about how many jobs could open up this month alone.
They also each gave some trade ideas that they believe could come to fruition this summer. They each had one for a Canadian team and they were spicy. They also dug into the playoff races before bringing in Tyler Yaremchuk for a little Buy or Sell, brought to you by Betano.
12:50 - Offence is up
20:50 - Coaching changes
29:38 - What if Calgary misses?
33:25 - Mock trade proposals

There just a few weeks left in the regular season and the races are really starting to heat up. The Flames and Predators are still alive thanks to the slumping Winnipeg Jets. Can the Preds really slip into the playoffs after selling off at the deadline? Jason and Frank talked about that today on the pod.
Want to know how much pressure the Panthers are under? Just go watch how their Head Coach Paul Maurice acted on the team’s bench last night. They guys started the pod by joking a little about what makes them lose their minds like Maurice. It also led to a conversation about whether or not the NHL is protecting their officials too much right now. Frank thinks the league is getting a little bit soft when it comes to how they coddle their referees.
They also broke down Frank’s Top 50 Unrestricted Free Agents list starting at the top with Maple Leafs winger Michael Bunting. Frank got ratio’d on Twitter for putting him there, but he explained why it made sense. Gregor compared him to another former Leaf that left in free agency and found success in his new home: Zach Hyman. They also hit of Tyler Bertuzzi, Vlad Gavrikov, and John Klingberg.
They wrapped things up by ranking the teams in each conference and Tyler Yaremchuk stopped by for a little Buy or Sell brought to you by Pointsbet Canada.
0:40 - Maurice & the Panthers
4:30 - Western playoff race
21:40 - Upcoming UFA class
31:50 - The Wild stay hot

It was a hectic weekend around the NHL with both conference's playoff races still not over yet. The Florida Panthers, Calgary Flames, and Nashville Predators are all on the outside looking in and haven’t exactly taken the bull by the horns over the last seven days. On the other hand, the Winnipeg Jets and Pittsburgh Penguins could have put those teams right out of it with a solid hot streak and neither of those teams has been able to do that. That means the final few weeks of the regular season should be very interesting.
Frank and Jason talked about that today on the pod. Before that though, they recapped Frank’s week off and his trip to Disney World. He’s been a handful of times this year and talked about his disdain for the whole experience. Jason has never been and is planning on taking his boy, but Frank gave him some insight into how things work and kind of scared him off of the idea.
They also talked about the playoff format, the LA Kings heading into the playoffs, and Auston Matthews tremendous weekend. The talk for a lot of teams right now is about peaking at the right time and playing their best hockey as they head into the playoffs and both the Kings and Leafs have been hitting their stride. Tyler Yaremchuk also got the guys to guess some price tags on players eligible for extensions this summer.
8:15 - NHL playoff races
12:00 - Lottery talk

It was a wild weekend around the NHL as playoff races continue to heat up. We had multiple 7+ goal outputs from different teams around the league and some of the teams that were victims of those offensive explosions were teams that were in the mix. Frank and Jason opened up the show by talking about the sliding Penguins, who are just barely hanging on in the Eastern Conference with the Florida Panthers lurking. Will they hold on?
If they miss, could Ron Hextall pay the price with his job? It could happen and Frank also talked about an interesting story out of Toronto that ties into a possible GM change in Pittsburgh.
From there, they went out West where it seems like nobody wants to grab a hold of the playoff race. The Jets, Predators, and Flames all continue to play very average hockey and it’s led to the wild card race staying wide open.
They also hit on McDavid’s race to 150 points before bringing in Tyler for a new edition of Fill in the Blank brought to you by Pointsbet Canada where he asked the guys about the upcoming free agent class in the NHL.
0:40 - Penguins slide
6:08 - Dubas to Pittsburgh?
10:50 - Western playoff race
16:30 - McDavid a lock for 150?
30:20 - Fill in the Blank

Jason and Frank are back with another episode of The DFO Rundown and they kicked things off with some fireworks as they talked about the Jordan Binnington vs Marc-Andre Fleury “non-fight”. Frank says this was just another example of Binnington’s fake tough guy act. Gregor wanted to see the linesmen let them go at it.
That spilled into a conversation about the state of fighting in the sport. They talked about some talks that happened at the GM meetings about this topic and how some in the sport want to see an end to fights after clean hits. The QMJHL is also becoming the first major junior league in Canada to outlaw fighting completely.
The NHL has two 100-point scorers already this year, and they’re both on the same team. The guys talked about Draisaitl’s remarkably productive season, if he’d be able to do it without 97, and where he ranks all-time amongst European centremen. Is he going to be the best ever? They also talked about McDavid’s remarkable season, which led to some talk about Connor Bedard and who’s doing the best tank job right now in the NHL.
Tyler hopped in with some Buy or Sell questions which started with one about McDavid’s historic season. He also asked them about which second seed has the best chance to catch their respective division leader. He wrapped it up with some talk about a very unique way that Gregor uses a frying pan.
4:30 - Binnington vs Fleury
9:00 - Fighting in the game
30:15 - McDavid & Draisaitl
36:30 - Draft lottery talk
39:15 - Buy or Sell
48:24 - Svechnikov injury
