Hello Fan & Friends! Today I am bringing you a bonus episode that is also a sequel to the last brand-new episode on the podcast. The last new episode, which was Ep. 17, featured Carly Bascom, Exec. On November 18th, 2022, the Snowbound Expo opened for the weekend marking the return of the snow show in Boston! I was able to get into Boston and hand at the expo for the day and I got to talk to a few people. The expo really is a social gathering as much as it is a business and info gathering. As for the social part, I talked to some old friends and made some new ones. I'll openly admit that I don't know anything about the discipline, though I have seen it once or twice on television. But one of the main reasons I have the podcast is to learn about new things. In this episode, Jacob talks about speed skiing and his own experiences racing at speeds that some of us will never hit on skis. So, Ski Rex Media has done a few things involving skiing youth, as of late. I was at the Tristate Championship for the Big Air & Slopestyle days. I also visited the Waterville Valley Acad. kids at Waterville Valley for a moguls training session. Then, I got to talk to Seth Ehrlich, the Exec. Reaching the Hall of Fame takes a lifetime of work and achievement...unless one is just going to cover the induction gala as a journalist. Then it just takes a few emails and phone calls. It’s not often that many of us get to say that we skied or snowboarded at a private ski club. The main reasons are that there isn’t one close by or we just aren’t members of any ski club that is close by. Well, I, as well as my assistant/producer, Travis, got to ski at one on February 11th, 2022. How and why? That’s what this episode is all about. This week, I have a two-part episode for you. The first part is a chat with Bill Benneyan, the Executive Director & GM of the Hermitage Club, which is right on Haystack Mountain in Wilmington, VT. We talk about the history of Haystack, the present & future, what it takes to become a member, what they offer, and a bunch of other things. It’s a pretty neat interview with someone who knows a bit about the industry. Then, stick around after Bill’s interview. Of course, it will be just me doing a similar closing as the one I always do after interviews and as the episode ends, but I go into a bit more than that first. I give you my take on the private ski club experience, whether or not I would join one if I could, and what it’s like to ski at Haystack now that it’s a private club versus what it was like to ski there back in the 90s when it was part of the American Skiing Company. I think it's always a draw when a program like this has a professional athlete as a guest. In this case, I do have an athlete, but I think it's even more unique because of his story. I have talked about a skiing book in the past. I had Dan Egan on the podcast talking about his book, “30 Years in a White Haze”. That was a lot of fun and this week we talk to an artist and skier that had a hand in that book. This week, I had the pleasure of speaking with Kimberley Kay, who not only did a handful of the illustrations in Egan’s book, but she has written and illustrated a book of her own, “Ski A to Z”. It’s a wonderful book that is written and illustrated for those wading into the ski world. All in all, I'd say it was a pretty decent winter and spring season. Wouldn't you agree? Once those are over, though, we enter summer and skiing & snowboarding can slow way down to a minimum. As I was deciding what I would talk about this week, I came across a story local to Vermont, which is where I am and grew up. Though this may be a local news story, eventually similar laws and regulations will start popping up in other states in the U.S. and other countries. In fact, these regulations have already shown up in more than just the ski industry. For this week, I'm talking about legislation that will ban the use of PFAS in ski wax, which is pretty common in many of our ski waxes. I'll also throw in my two cents on how this might start to affect the industry, both locally and abroad, as well as if I agree with it or not. I wasn't keeping it a secret that I went with the Indy Pass for this winter and spring ski season. I thought it was a great deal when I picked it up last fall. But, do I still think it was a good deal and will I be buying one for next winter? Today we take another look at the Indy Pass, mostly due to the announcement they made yesterday, Feb. 23rd. Like a straight juggernaut, Indy Pass keeps moving forward with what seems to be unstoppable momentum. For the second, or possibly third time this season, Indy Pass has announced another two ski mountains joining their ranks. This time they add two more New England hills to a list that is just about 60 mountains strong. For those that haven't heard, the recently reopened Saddleback Mountain in Maine and N.H. favorite Waterville Valley are now Indy Pass mountains. I've talked about my opinion on a lot of the lawsuits that seem to come up each year against ski hills, and I'm sure I'll talk about it again at some point in the future, but I'm also talking about it now. Why? Well, while I am hopeful of a great season, even during the times of COVID-19, I have a feeling that it's going to be a season of lawsuits, not just centered around injury, liability, and negligence, but also around COVID-19. Part of me sees it coming. So, this is my plea to the masses to resist the urge to sue when it isn't necessary and to take a little responsibility for one's actions or inactions.
