This week, the girls have possibly their funnest interview yet! They sit down with content creator, choreographer and dancer Austyn Farrell. During the first lockdowns, Austen starred in some incredible viral videos that showed him entertaining his neighbours and anyone who happened to walk past. This week on the pod, Alex and Em are joined by chef and writer Alasdair (Ali) Gill. Ali and Em - whose parents were close friends - have been mates for years. Ali’s late father is the renowned journalist, author and critic A. A. Gill. Like his father, Ali has suffered with addiction, which led him on a journey to rehab; it was there, during his recovery, that he sought comfort in his father’s memoir, which details his own struggles with alcohol. This week, the girls chat to Laura Mathias. Laura was 13 when she started losing her hair. No one could help her – not her mum, her friends or even her doctor. She was told, as a teenager, that stress was contributing to her development of alopecia. Stress management wasn’t easy, how could it be at that age? And as Laura’s hair continued to fall out, she finally plucked up the courage to ask for a wig. Now, almost two decades later, Laura has found herself finally ready to accept herself and her baldness. She’s starred in photoshoots, appeared on national television and even walked a runway, all without her wig. Laura wants other women and young girls with alopecia to not feel the helplessness that she did. Laura’s confidence #journey is incredible, and Em and Alex are so proud to share her story.

This week on the podcast, the girls talk to Sarah de Lagarde. In September 2022, Sarah was involved in a freak accident that would change her life forever. After falling asleep on the tube, Sarah woke up and realised that she had slept past her stop. Like anyone in that situation would, she promptly got up and raced over towards another train that would get her home. As she did, she slipped on the wet platform and the unimaginable happened: she tripped and ended up falling down onto the tracks. Sarah lost her arm and her leg after the train took off, and with sheer determination she shouted for help by saying “My name is Sarah, I don’t want to die”. Twenty minutes later, after what must have felt like an eternity, someone finally heard her and got her the help she needed. Almost four months on from the accident, Sarah joined Alex and Em in the studio to discuss the incident and how she has managed to get through it all so gracefully.

This week, Alex and Em talk to Iranian feminist activist Samaneh Savadi. The Islamic Republic of Iran has been experiencing turmoil as a result of the government’s misogynistic regime and the murders of many protestors and dissenters.
After noticing their story views drop significantly whenever they spoke out about this issue, the girls wanted to bring a deeper awareness of it to themselves and to others by talking to Samaneh about her understanding and experience. Samaneh herself cannot go home to Iran out of fear of being arrested, or worse, for speaking out and campaigning for women’s rights. She suggests that one of the best ways to help women in Iran is by continuing to speak out, so hopefully this episode gives you the impetus to do so.

This week on the podcast, the girls meet influencer and reality TV star Georgia Harrison. Em and Alex wanted to talk to Georgia about how, over the past few years, she has been living a nightmare after falling victim to revenge porn. Her ex, sex offender and fellow reality TV star, Stephen Bear, non-consensually recorded him and Georgia having sex. He spread the video across the internet, subsequently profiting from it, which became an all-consuming battle for Georgia as she fought to not only remove the video, but to have Bear convicted. The girls get the details of this betrayal, the brave steps Georgia took to prosecute and how it felt when she finally saw justice.

This week, in the run up to Christmas, Em and Al speak have decided to turn the spotlight onto Ukraine. With the war still raging on, the girls wanted to understand more about what was happening on the ground and what we can all do to help. First, they spoke to Ukrainian lawyer Nadiya Bilous who is on the board of Dattalion. Dattalion is an open-source database containing Ukraine war footage and a list of verified eyewitnesses to the invasion. Founded and run by women, it was created to fight disinformation. They then spoke to Liza, a musician who escaped Ukraine (and coincidentally lives with previous guest Lizzie Pickering in the UK) about the emotional impact of fleeing her home.

This week, the girls chat to co-founder of Isle of Paradise, podcaster and body confidence legend Jules Von Hep. Jules started out in fashion and fell into spray tanning, and while his relationship with his own body suffered, he was uplifting women day in and day out as they entered the booth for a bit of fun and a glimmer of hope. Jules shares his own body confidence journey, and how that was influenced by the thousands of women he spray tanned over the years. He certainly still has the ability to uplift and put one at ease, and we hope you feel that from this conversation.

This week, the girls chat to Soma Sara, author and founder of Everyone’s Invited: a forum for people to anonymously share their experiences of sexual assault and harassment. Through opening up that space, Soma was inundated with stories from survivors and has dedicated her time to assist in making a change. She shares her belief in the importance of empathy, compassion and understanding, and how this, above all else, is the key to making that change. With a rapidly changing world that is increasingly focussed online, and where 9 out of 10 school girls are pestered to send nudes, this change couldn’t come quicker.

After sharing a clip of Tyra Banks telling a America’s Next Top Model contestant to eat a burger without the bread, Alex was sent a DM. The message was from that very model, Keenyah Hill, who had been essentially told to eat less by Tyra on cycle 4 of ANTM. Keenyah, 19 at the time, had also been compared to an elephant by the judges, and edited in a way that exaggerated how much and how often she was eating. Keenyah wanted to share her version of events, how being on ANTM affected her life and what it taught her about the real world of modelling. Now a pose coach and model mentor, Keenyah teaches aspiring models how to be confident in themselves and let that confidence carry them through.

Em can't wait to adapt their gorgeous love story into a film! Would suggest staying until the end to hear a pretty brilliant outtake.

Jac’s back… another emergency call to our resident coach Jacqueline Hurst. This week, Em opens up about her slip into checking online forums. She talks to Jacqueline about how it has really impacted her self esteem, and Jac helps dissect exactly why. This isn’t only for people who, on the off chance, may find themselves being spoken about on a forum, but for anyone who has ever been criticised. Jacqueline wants to show you how to not let it impact you, and as Al sees it, how you can use your skin as a barrier against negativity.

This week, we've got a slightly different episode that saw us take the podcast into central London to join the Women’s Equality Party as they Marched On The Met.
When we initially contacted Patsy Stevenson, we thought this would be a standard interview week, but then we realised that there was much more that needed to be shared. Patsy attended the Sarah Everard vigil on Clapham Common in March 2021; she quickly became synonymous with the arrests that took place that day, carried out by police who saw the vigil as a breach of covid regulations. Her face was suddenly everywhere, the face of the unrest that happened when women's attempts to mourn were crushed.
The story is bigger than this though. After Patsy shared her thoughts on what really happened that day, we followed her to Trafalgar Square to join a protest against institutional misogyny and racism within the police. We heard from some incredible women there, and wanted to share their thoughts with you.
The speakers you heard from today were:
