Today’s show is a special one because it’s a LIVE episode from a panel I did in New York a couple of weeks ago.
As many of you know, or will come to learn through this discussion, for far to long American garment workers have faced unsafe working conditions, wage theft, and piecework pay, which often prioritizes fast fashion over worker safety.
The proposed federal FABRIC Act, introduces groundbreaking new workplace protections and manufacturing incentives to cement the US as the global leader in responsible apparel production.
This policy would protect nearly 100,000 American garment workers and revitalize the garment industry in the United States by improving working conditions, reforming the piece-rate pay scale and investing in domestic apparel production.
Together, by championing the FABRIC Act, we are reweaving the very fabric of the future US garment industry. On this week’s episode, I talk with three other sustainable fashion changemakers about how they’re advocating for progress in the fashion industry through the FABRIC Act.
Let’s just dive right in!

Today’s show is with Ruby, founder of Girl of the Earth, an NYC-based upcycled brand made from vintage-fabric-remnants dating from 1940-1999.
Ruby grew up to antique-dealer parents in New York City, so she’s been in the vintage world since day-one. After graduating with a Master’s Degree in Entrepreneurship from London College of Fashion, where she wrote her dissertation on fast fashion, and the industry’s detrimental use of deadstock, she went on to start her own brand made from post-consumer vintage fabrics.
We talk about her commitment to few-of-a-kind styles, the beautiful kitsch of vintage fabrics, and the complexities of the fabric food chain, if you will.

Today’s show is a collective episode about the Brooklyn Flea, which re-opens for the season this weekend (April 1-2!). Founded 15 years ago, in April 2008 by Jonathan Butler and Eric Demby, Brooklyn Flea has grown into one of New York City’s top attractions, operating flea markets that feature hundreds of top vendors of furniture, vintage clothing, collectibles and antiques.
First up, you’ll hear from co-founder Eric Demby, and then later on in the episode, three incredible vintage dealers who have been with the flea since its early days.
We’ll speak with Francois of Of Leisure who was a fashion photographer for 10 years before he started selling French and American vintage at the Brooklyn Flea in 2013.
Then we’ll chat with Travis, the owner of The Hood Haberdasher, who grew up between Brooklyn, Miami and Jamaica, and started his full time vintage passion about 15 years ago - bringing “statements, not staples”home to Brooklyn to the Flea.
And finally we speak to Thea Grant, about the family first jewelry business she and her husband Nico started in Brooklyn, and their extensive range of vintage, antique and handmade jewelry.
It was such a joy to hear from them what being a part of the Brooklyn Flea all these years has meant to them – so let’s just dive right in!

Today’s show is with Carley Lake, the co-founder of Lucky Sweater. Carely first discovered thrifting when her dad introduced her to the stores on Melrose Ave. in LA, back when she was at the peak of her fast fashion addiction in high school. On this episode, we’ll chat through Carley’s whole journey that led to Lucky Sweater – how she started a sustainable fashion site called Thoughtful Flamingo, and her experience on the groundfloor at Uber where she co-launched Uber’s women safety program and Community Guidelines.
But what led Carley to the Lucky Sweater idea? She missed finding community through clothing! Lucky Sweater is a community app that allows users to connect and trade clothing with like-minded communities. Lucky Sweater’s first community trading space was focused on slow and sustainable fashion brands, and the team recently launched a community for makers to trade handmade clothing, accessories, and supplies.
We chat about all this and more on today’s episode, so let’s just dive right in!

Eva has a long history in the fashion industry, having worked for Ralph Lauren and Giorgio Armani, places where she honed her craft for visual merchandising. In 2005, she opened Consignment Brooklyn which has remained a pillar of Brooklyn ever since. Today, Eva can still be found at Consignment Brooklyn most days, and she also offers personal styling and closet clean-out services. Most recently, she’s partnered with the Manhattan Vintage Show as one of Manhattan Vintage’s dedicated Fashion Stylists.

Pre-Loved Podcast: Rosella Vintage & Minneapolis Vintage
Jahna Peloquin is a Minneapolis-based style writer, stylist and style expert with a passion for local fashion, community, sustainability, the arts, and all things vintage. Her writing and styling has been published in Minneapolis Star Tribune, Mpls.St.Paul Magazine and Midwest Home, and she served as the Style Editor of Minnesota Monthly and the Fashion Director of Rosedale Center. Building on 15 years in the local fashion community as a stylist and fashion reporter, Jahna co-founded Fashion Week MN in 2015 as a vehicle to support the local fashion community.
Most recently, she founded her own vintage fashion brand, Rosella Vintage, and is a regular vendor at the Minneapolis Vintage Market, and at other pop-ups around the Twin Cities area.
Coming soon – late September — you’ll be able to find Rosella Vintage at a collective vintage shop called Olio Vintage, so you’ll have more opportunities to shop in-person! She’s also planning to launch her own website around this time.
In this episode, we talk about the Minneapolis fashion scene she grew up in, being a part of local fashion shows, working as a fashion writer, the start of her vintage shop, and her favorite style moments!
When I chat with her, it really brings to light the importance of community in creating a great local vintage scene, and I think that leads us in to the secondhand half of our show really well! For the second half of the show, we’re headed to a Minneapolis Vintage Market event. Now, the market rotates through the Twin Cities every month (super cool!) but this particular market was actually at the Triple-A baseball stadium, home of the St. Paul Saints, a Minneapolis Twins affiliate!
This was such a fun environment for a vintage market, and I had an absolute blast strolling around with my concessions and a beer chatting with the local Minneapolis vintage vendors.
Let’s head in and hear their stories!

Pre-Loved Podcast: Carrie Diaz of Best Friend Central
Today, I’m joined by Carrie Diaz of Best Friend Central. Carrie opened her first vintage and upcycling boutique in Los Angeles back in 2005, and some of her vintage finds from those days were styled on the seasons of Mad Men – you better believe we chat about that! These days, she runs a vintage boutique called Best Friend Central, and she works at the intersection of mental health and style.
When Carrie signed the lease on the space that would be Best Friend Central in the early days of the pandemic lockdown she felt like she had to muster up real courage to do something most considered unthinkable. But she painted her storefront’s door bright yellow (to symbolize hope) and for the last few years she’s been building something really special for her neighborhood, based around positivity and friendship as much as style.
Let’s dive right into this episode and have a chat about where style meets well-being!

Today, I’m joined by Lexie of Lexie Butterfly Vintage! Lexie started working in vintage in 2013, but made vintage her full time gig in 2020 when she transplanted to Somerville, Massachusetts. Lexie Butterfly Vintage specializes in bold colors, wacky prints, and fun and unique styling. Lexie loves sewing and is all about sustainability in her shop – from bringing damaged pieces back to life to creating a new garment from vintage fabric, she’s committed to “using it up and wearing it out.”
I met Lexie at the Manhattan Vintage Show, and was immediately obsessed with her – this is the place where I got that rad white leather Western jacket with the floral embroidery!
So it was such a blast to have her on the show today to talk about all things psychedelic hippie vintage, restoring truly old pieces, estate sales, and what might be the wildest sourcing story I’ve ever heard…. It’s a fun one and I can’t wait for you to hear it!

Pre-Loved Podcast: LIVE from New York
Today’s show is LIVE from ReFashion Week NYC and the Manhattan Vintage Show. I spent two weeks in April in New York, covering both ReFashion Week NYC – New York City’s fashion week focused on secondhand, upcycling, and reuse – and the Manhattan Vintage Show – NYC’s iconic vintage show featuring the largest collection of clothing, jewelry, accessories and antique textiles in the world.
It was an absolute dream come true to get to be a part of these events – for even more about them, check out the last couple of podcast episodes: I’ve got one with Alissa of ReFashion Week, Amy Abrams of Manhattan Vintage, AND a LIVE podcast episode we tapped at Dusty Rose Vintage as part of the week’s events.
But this week, I’m taking you along for the ride, join me as I attend panels, conduct street style interviews, take in an all pre-loved fashion show, and shop the Manhattan Vintage Market! I can’t wait for you to hear – let’s dive right in.

Pre-Loved Podcast: LIVE from Dusty Rose Vintage
I’m joined by Maresa, the owner of Dusty Rose Vintage and Gold Dust Projects. Maresa has two decades of experience in the vintage and secondhand garment space. She began her career in the Urban Outfitters’ vintage and reconstructed clothing department, then transitioned to build wholesale vintage operations at two of the largest textile recyclers on the East Coast. She then went on to found Dusty Rose Vintage and her events brand, Gold Dust Projects, where she’s sold vintage, hosted markets, and produced circularity and sustainability focused events.
And also Kate, a vintage lover and visible mender, and the author of MEND! A Refashioning Manual and Manifesto. Kate is truly a mending historian -- she’s currently doing a PHd in design history, material culture and mending.
At this show, we got into their stories with vintage and secondhand, talked about how the secondhand space has changed and evolved, and imagined potential futures for the world of secondhand fashion. PLUS, you get to hear some really fun stories about digging through the bargain bins and their fave vintage finds. This is a really exciting one, so let’s get into – let’s dive right into the show!

Pre-Loved Podcast: Amy Abrams
Today, I’m joined by Amy Abrams, a visionary entrepreneur whose career has been dedicated to creating environments that bring people together while helping independent creators and entrepreneurs launch and grow their businesses.
You might know Amy and her husband, Ronen Gilmer from their vintage and marker shows, like Artists & Fleas, the Upstate Vintage and Antique Show, Regeneration, and – most recently – the Manhattan Vintage show.
Inspired by a lifelong love of travel and world markets, Amy and Ronen co-founded Artists & Fleas in 2003 as a retail marketplace for makers, vintage-lovers and collectors. Today there are five locations of Artists & Fleas, including in both New York, and California, and most recently Georgia. In 2019, they founded the Upstate Vintage and Antique Show to celebrate vintage, antiques, and makers in the Hudson Valley community. In April 2021, they launched the Regeneration market, which is dedicated to thrifted and pre-loved fashion, as well as upcycled and vintage – the kinds of styles that appeal to the next generation of vintage lovers.
And in early 2022, they announced the acquisition of the beloved Manhattan Vintage, New York City’s most iconic and largest vintage show featuring the most extensive collections of vintage and antique clothing, jewelry, accessories and textiles in the world.
We talk about all this and more on today’s episode of Pre-Loved Podcast!
As you're listening to this live, I’m in New York covering ReFashion Week, and in addition to hosting the very first episode of Pre-Loved Podcast LIVE (more info on the live show in the shownotes!) I’ll get to attend the Manhattan Vintage Market – I’ll be there Saturday, April 9!
I’m so glad Amy shared her tips for experiencing the Manhattan Vintage show with me, and all of you! So let’s get into – let’s dive right into the show!

Pre-Loved Podcast: Deals on Designers
Today’s show is with two guests, co-founders of Deals on Designers, an online consignment and vintage shop, Mariya and Paige! Mariya had the idea for Deals on Designers while working at a textile recycling non-profit, RewearAble – she loved secondhand fashion and wanted to find more ways for sustainable, secondhand pieces to make their way into people’s closets. She teamed up with Paige, a former co-worker from another job, whose own enthusiasm for the fashion industry was fostered when interning at Tom Ford. While Paige enjoyed the ever-changing landscape of the fashion industry, she also saw a need for brands to incorporate sustainable initiatives into their practices.
And so, Deals on Designers was born! These two have incredible stories about textile recycling, founding a business together, partnering with vintage collectors, and giving back to good causes.
I’m so excited for you to hear all of their stories, so let’s dive right into the show!

Hey vintage lovers, I’m Emily Stochl and this is Pre-Loved Podcast -- the show about rad vintage style and guests you’ll want to go thrifting with!
On this show, I interview guests from all across the secondhand space about their stories with thrift and vintage. And to follow along with all things thrift, vintage, rad, retro, and sustainable, you can find me Emily Stochl, across the internet as @emilymstochl. And you’ll find even more of this kind of content at my Patreon, Patreon.com/prelovedpod.

Pre-Loved Podcast: Secondhand in Bangladesh
This episode began when I connected with Nurjahan and Raul of the brand, Progoti, and they described the mission of the brand. Progoti is a social enterprise brand that works with secondary materials leftover from the fashion production process, which are sold in a secondhand market in Bangladesh. They are an ethical and sustainable brand that supports the livelihood and craftsmanship of garment makers in Bangladesh, where Nurjahan, the brand’s founder is from.
We worked together to create an episode that explores the leftover materials -- the secondary materials -- of the fashion industry in Bangladesh.
This episode begins with a bit of background about the fabric wholesale markets in Bangladesh, including the Islampur Market, one of the markets where Progoti sources their material. After that introduction, we move into a conversation with Nurjahan and Raul about the brand and the secondhand fashion space in Bangladesh.
Later on in this episode you will get to hear about the day to day of a fabric vendor working in the secondary markets, and an interview between Nurjahan and Ohidul, Progoti’s flannel salesman who works in Bikrampur Market -- the other secondary market where Progoti sources material. Finally, you will get to hear a conversation between Nurjahan and Shahida -- Shahida is one of the sewists employed by Progoti.
Both the conversations with Ohidul and Shahida have been generously recorded, transcribed and translated by Nurjahan, an effort which makes this entire episode possible.

Pre-Loved Podcast: Onloan
Today I’m speaking with Tamsin and Natalie, two friends who founded the fashion rental business Onloan together. Tamsin and Natalie have a shared mission to address fashion’s wastage problem, support a designers long term creative vision and provide circular solutions for a garments life cycle. Their professional backgrounds are very different, and they share a bit about their journey into this space and how it’s looked for them starting Onloan.
We also chat about clothing rental in the context of sustainable fashion -- you may have seen a recent study that suggests clothing rental is “less sustainable than throwing your clothes away” -- yeah, we did into the details on that. We also talk about what it was like to launch this business just six months before the pandemic changed the entire world, and how things are looking forward for clothing rental.

Pre-Loved Podcast: Alicia Minnaard of Fixing Fashion
Today I’m speaking with Alicia Minnaard, a Dutch fashion/textile designer, researcher and co-founder of Fixing Fashion, currently based in Eindhoven, The Netherlands.
With a positive and problem-solving outlook, Alicia works exclusively with materials that are often considered waste. Fixing Fashion provides tutorials on how to repair and upgrade clothes, helps people proudly design and wear Fixed Fashion, creating a global community, and reduces the amount of waste produced by fashion. It’s a project within the One Army collective -- a collective that aims to solve global problems, like plastic pollution, clothing and fashion waste, and many more.
In the early days of the project, Alicia and team went on a research trip to visit Kantamanto Market in Accra, Ghana, and learn from the models of sustainability found in the secondhand market there. In our conversation she emphasized to me the privilege that comes from being able to travel to research models of sustainability in this way, and that she doesn’t take for granted or romanticize the upcycling work being done -- by necessity -- in Kantamanto. She acknowledges that upcycling will not solve all of fashion’s waste problems, without degrowth at the forefront.
We did into all of this and more in today’s show -- so let’s get into it!

Pre-Loved Podcast: Daniya of LA Vintage
Today we’re talking bulk vintage! I’m speaking with Daniya the owner of LA Vintage, a rag house that supplies vintage clothing, shoes and accessories to retailers, stylists, designers and wholesalers around the world.

Pre-Loved Podcast: Zero Waste Daniel
Today I’m speaking with Zero Waste Daniel. Zero Waste Daniel is a New York based clothing designer and zero-waste lifestyle pioneer who uses pre-consumer waste sourced from New York City’s garment industry, as well as other hard-to-recycle materials, to create his line of genderless clothing and accessories that send nothing to landfills.
At Zero Waste Daniel, fabric waste is kept at zero. Pattern making techniques, appliqués, tiled mosaics and embellishments absorb one hundred percent of the textile goods that are brought into the make / shop. Each piece from zwd diverts roughly one pound of fabric from hitting landfill.
On this episode we talk about Daniel’s fashion career, zero waste design, ReRoll and his famous patchwork designs, using the teeny-tiniest of scraps, and so much more.
I’m really, really excited for this episode, Daniel was an absolute blast, so let’s dive right into the episode!

Pre-Loved Podcast: Knickey
Today I’m speaking with Cayla O’Connell Davis, the co-founder and CEO of Knickey, an organic cotton intimates company with the first ever intimates recycling program. Working in the world of secondhand, I’m asked all the time about underwear -- we don’t thrift it, we shouldn’t donate it, so what are we to do?
Knickey wants to help solve those problems. In addition to their GOTS and Fair Trade certification, and their company’s carbon neutrality, they developed a first-of-its-kind recycling program to solve an industry-wide fashion problem of old underwear piling up in landfills.
In this episode we’re going to talk about textile recycling, sustainability in the intimates industry, high-value recycling solutions, innovation and forward progress, and so much more!

Pre-Loved Podcast: The Consistency Project
Today, I’m actually revisiting a guest I’ve had on the show previously, Natasha of The Consistency Project. Natasha and I originally recorded a Pre-Loved Podcast episode back in March 2020 -- it aired on March 23rd, and I’ll link it in the shownotes because it’s still a great episode if you haven’t hear it.
But, as we all know, the spring of 2020 was a time of big changes -- for all of us.
Let’s see if I can get this timeline right -- Natasha opened a physical Brooklyn location for The Consistency Project, her vintage and upcycling sustainable fashion business in December 2019, just a couple months after having her first baby! Of course, less than four months later, the pandemic would force TCP to close their doors to the public.
When Natasha and I spoke on Pre-Loved Podcast last month, we all thought maybe the closures would be a temporary storm to ride. But by the time summer came around, Natasha made the difficult decision to close the physical space permanently, and actually move her family and TCP to Hawaii where she grew up.
We thought it would be really interesting to catch up and really realistic and helpful to hear the stories about making hard decisions to pivot in your business. The Consistency Project is still at it breaking the stigma of secondhand and reworking fashion. They’re just doing it in different ways.
I’m really, really excited for this episode, so let’s dive right in!

Now, 30 years later, Crossroads has expanded to 35 stores across the United States, including locations in California, New York, Texas, Chicago, Seattle and Portland.
