Submit ReviewBelonging is a deep instinctual need we have as a societal based species, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that many of us as children (and adults) choose approval of other humans over authenticity and self trust inside of ourselves.
Once we are aware of this instinct, analysis of our behavior choices become incredible interesting. We have now brought subconscious motives to the surface and can make decisions from a place of intention and consciousness, and this can prove to create beautiful moments of unconditional love and empowerment.

It seems there is an epidemic of disrespect, whining, tantrums, talking back and in general, less respect than we saw in previous generations of kids. We are burned out as parents and we don't see a way out. This ends in being ultra strict or ultra passive because we just feel burnt out.
In this episode Felica talks with Joe Newman about mutual recognition. This is the practice of back and forth respect that we should see to establish in our homes for a peaceful environment. Oftentimes the balance is shifted in favor of respecting our children but is not returned. There is a place in the middle where we can create a mutually respectful relationship with our kids.

273 // When Things Don’t Go as Planned
We all like to plan for life and set expectations for how things should go, but what happens when life doesn’t go as planned? Or people or circumstances don’t meet expectations? We try to have a baby and are unable, we lose jobs, marriages end, we lose faith. In this episode we talk about the disappointment, regrets, discouragement, and frustration associated with these situations and tools we can use to view and navigate them with greater understanding and peace.
Main Ideas
The language we use to define our emotions matters!
Disappointment vs. Regret - we feel disappointment when things don’t go how we wanted them to, and we feel the outcome is out of our control. We feel regret when things don’t go how we wanted, and we feel the outcome was caused by our own decisions, actions, or failure to act.
Regret can be one of our greatest (and most uncomfortable) teachers
Tools we talk about - Involving God, “TFT”s from Brené Brown, Fear Setting from Tim Ferris

Does it ever feel like you are just being thrashed by the waves of life? Most of us have felt that way. In this episode, Taralyn describes some things she learned about facing waves in the ocean in Costa Rica. Sometimes it is helpful to face them with peaceful warrior strength; sometimes, its easier to duck under and let the wave roll over us, and sometimes we can surrender to it and allow ourselves to rest as we roll through them. Also, let’s not forget the joy of riding the waves! Sometimes life is a joyful ride, and thats important to enjoy also.

In this episode, Taralyn describes a few things she has learned lately in her wrestle for alignment.
The steps she has used to help her are:
1-Identify what parts of you are misaligned and intentionally give them all a seat in your council.
2-Set aside time daily to imagine what it would feel like to have that settled feeling of being aligned in your heart, mind, body, and spirit. Use that powerful brain of yours to try on the feeling of having all of the parts be in harmony. Tapping into this vibration helps you pull it towards you. Grounding is also a really helpful tool during this step. The shower is a great place to try this habit because its daily and the water is so conductive.
4-Think bigger. Zoom out your perspective and observe that YOU are not your body, your emotions, or your mind. Once you FEEL that, aligning all of them becomes easier--like a magnet rearranging metal shavings.
If you try this, Taralyn would LOVE to know how it goes for you. Just DM her on instagram @taralyngriffin

We respond with anger; we use bribing or coercion to make our kids behave, and we hurt our relationship with our kids and ourselves in the process. In this episode, we take a deep dive into individual steps we can take anytime we find ourselves triggered by our kids’ behavior. We start with ourselves, pause, attune to our child, and then respond, not react, by setting limits and allowing logical consequences by looking at the need being expressed by our child’s behavior. This conversation will help you reframe difficult parenting situations and allow you to focus on the priority of your relationship.
Take a pause to connect to your intuition when making decisions.
Pay attention to what you fear and ask yourself why? Parenting helps us see ourselves more clearly. Don’t parent from a place of lack.

Fear is a powerful emotion. All of us face it at some point of another, and often, it really puts a damper on the way we live our lives. It can interfere with us loving wholeheartedly and doing things that inspire (and scare) us. In this episode, Taralyn dives deep into the concept of facing and processing our fears so they don’t hold us back in life. She addresses 3 different kinds of fear, and walks you through steps to free yourself from the fears that don’t serve you.

However, the beauty of having our own families is that we can intentionally choose the holiday activities that serve us and let go of the ones that don’t. The magic of family traditions is that they help our children feel a sense of belonging and gives them roots, which helps them identify with the connection of the family instead of peer groups and can help with their behavior.
In this episode, we share the traditions that serve us with simplicity and joy and give you many options to try with your own family. We talk about how sometimes all it takes is to recognize the traditions we already have and capitalize on naming them and making them reoccurring and special.
From Halloween fun, ways to be grateful in November and loads of Christmas and winter traditions we hope that this episode inspires you to create new memories with your family and recognize your current traditions to turn them into magical ones that repeat every year!

We face fears, failure, triggers of our own emotions, often while experiencing physical and emotional fatigue. However, because of this, children have the capacity to be our greatest teachers. They allow us the opportunity to truly look inside of ourselves when we are triggered, and wake up to our own nature.
In this episode, Felica had the incredible opportunity of discussing this topic with parenting expert and author, Susan Stiffelman, MFT. She explains how we can use the practice of being present to truly use this journey we have as parents to truly evolve ourselves as we face the daunting task of raising humans to do the same. Her books and her words are unbelievably inspiring and will help you as you navigate your own parenting experience.

That kind of belief lets us off the hook from creating the life we really want--we simply lack the self discipline, right? Well, it turns out that as we create habits that add value to our lives, we actually require LESS self control, not more. As we change our environment and our cues and rewards, we have the power to eliminate negative habits and build positive ones that can transform our life. Habits are the key to making our goals a reality. We discuss the science behind habits and explore the work of experts on the subject. We break down the steps for creating a good habit (or ridding yourself of a bad one), and give you applicable tips that you can use right away in your life. We share what has really worked in our own lives as we have experimented with habits and unlocked the magic of things like habit stacking.

Social media messages, societal expectations, and our own self talk often feeds the lie that we can do EVERYTHING. When we don’t live up to the unrealistic expectation that we can do everything and succeed at everything, there is a cost to our mental health.
In this episode, we discuss this topic with New York Times best selling author, Greg McKeown. He helps identify the lie that we can do everything, and instead offers a path of wisdom, balance, and priorities instead of the wild racing that we often indulge in when we are trying to say yes to everything. He gives us very applicable steps on how to make doing what truly matters to us easy.

Review of the week:
Unicorns are Real
I have loved and listened to "Find the Magic" for years of motherhood. So many of those years I would listen to Taralyn or Felicia talk about reframing and even enjoying the mundane tasks (like changing diapers) and to dos that normally are mindless. They talked about enjoying these things, creating connection in them. Every week I tuned in but honestly, I didn't believe it. I said things like, "I can't be that mom, that isn't working for MY children, these women are just UNICORNS. And every episode I would still plug in my headphones and listen along and wish I could get there, be that mom. Then something switched, last year I went on (my first ever) solo retreat to South America. It was a women's empowerment, yoga, surf trip but a switch flipped and I started doing the work on myself. I continued taking steps like FINALLY starting a miracle morning routine (for me!) and guess what? Things started clicking with my kids, and at home. So if you are able, start with yourself. I was convinced that to be a good mom I had to read all the parenting books, listen to all the podcasts, plan all the activities but that is so far from reality. Start with your Self! So grateful to Find The Magic, To Taralyn, Felicia and Katelin... Thank you!

She discusses tips and tools, including the work by Byron Katie, for how to change our thoughts, which will ultimately change our reality.

A lot of jokes, angst and dread can surround this time of year. Let’s start as we mean to go on! In this episode, we are sharing some of our favorite tips for designing our summer. We touch on creating and setting boundaries from the start, letting our kids be and resisting screen entertaining. If we have learned anything this year, it is that being fluid and available for change can help us live in the present and create a calm atmosphere in our homes. As we let them be free to work through the B word (boredom!) we will come out the other side with having enjoyed our summer together!

We LOVE books. One of the casualties of our current age and our screen adapted/crippled attention spans is that we don’t read as much anymore. In this magic moment, Taralyn gives her best persuasion for reading and gives lots of easy tips to keep or acquire the habit of reading in your life. People ask us all the time how we read so many books, and she tells the secret to our habits:)

Good for dads too!
As a father of two grown children and now taking care of my 16 year old nephew along with my wife, I still find lots of great tips and inspiration from these three amazing humans. I love the “high 5” and “facepalm” stories and the podcast is a soothing way to start a day or listen to in the drive home after a busy day at work. I wish I had something like this when my kids were younger as I think back to some situations I could have handled better. Thank you Find the Magic for all the times you made me smile, laugh, think and grow as a parent.

Today we are sharing our favorite nuggets from the book pertaining to disciplining our kids. The advice is less prescriptive and more in line with what we know to be true as parents and humans. Our children are learning. Our role is to see them with love and respect and teach them the ways of their family tribe. We tackle how to direct our kids with less force, create cooperation, and reduce the amount of anger in our homes.

Cherise L&D nurse, 03/15/2023
I just want to take the time to thank you for being such a positive change in my life. I started listening to you guys while I was in nursing school back in 2020. Your very first podcast on morning routines changed my life forever. I then purchased “Miracle Morning” and have lived by this since then. I wake up every morning, oil pull, set my diffusers, do yoga, sip on tea, and if I have time run with my dog (I even make sure to do this on my work days). Being a busy mom of 2 kids ages 7 and 4 that I partially homeschool (they’re also in a homeschool co op), wife, and a nurse, I can’t thank you ladies enough. Your podcasts help center myself as a parent. It’s so easy to get caught up in the day to day busy lifestyle, and when I do find that happening, I pop my ear buds in and go on a run and listen to you ladies. I tell every single mom about your podcast. You have made such a positive change for my family. I truly can’t even begin to tell you how much gratitude I have for your show.
Thank you,
Cherise

When we first started Find the Magic, we realized through research and experience that many of the strategies and ideas we found in books boiled down to four pillars: Connection, Being Present, Unconditional Love, & Healthy Boundaries. We labeled these pillars because they figuratively hold up the loving, kind, respectful homes we are striving to cultivate. We have found that if you are seeing behavioral issues with children or a lack of peace within yourself, these pillars can serve to help you recalibrate. In this episode we discuss how to ACTUALLY apply and do these four pillars.

THE ONLY PODCAST I RELIGIOUSLY LISTEN TO This podcast saved my motherhood! I read all of Janet Lansbury’s books prior to my first daughter and told myself I can do this…then when my second was born (daughter had just turned 3), I started to fall apart. I found this podcast…and [went] down the amazing rabbit hole of this podcast. They dive into incredible topics, things I am thinking of, they read and discuss books I’ve read or are in my to-read list…I just cannot say enough good things about this podcast and these women. I listen while doing laundry, walking, making dinner…wherever I can. The mamas are like having coffee with best friends–they keep SO REAL. And during the pandemic–bless you girls. This time is so challenging, sometimes I feel like I am barely getting by–but they make me laugh because they remind you that everyone is going through this thing called life and motherhood–even now. Hugs and loves from NJ!

Life changing
…Having a baby is one thing, but raising that baby, your child(ren) can be exhausting and confusing at times. Am I doing this right, should I do this? Etc. etc. This podcast halps shed light on parenting and literally gives the best advice. The title “Finding the magic” could not be more spot on. I find myself being able to be more connected to my children and husband sometimes when I just feel lost. It helps me understand nd see more clearly into our relationships. The more I listen, the more I love. Thank you so much for all you girls do. You rock!

Our bodies are intelligent. They are the home to our mind, spirit and psyche and are affected by our emotions whether we acknowledge them or not. Making the connection between our bodies and our emotions can lead us to a place of wellness and wholeness. This week we explore the mind body connection with the work of Dr. Gabor Mate (When the Body Says No). We also dive into how we can process those emotions and perhaps allow them to move through and heal us. Feeling pain is hard. There is no way around it. Oftentimes, we try to numb it or avoid it. We continue our conversation we started in episode 222 about negative emotions. How does the repression of negative emotions affect our bodies? We discuss grief and anguish and we wrestle with the concept of finding the balance in relationships between authenticity and attachment. Can we be true to ourselves and also have nurturing relationships? It’s a balance we all face.
Here are some of the questions we discuss that may be contributing to a build up of unprocessed negative emotions in your life:
1- In my life’s important areas, what am I not saying no to?
2 - How does my inability to say no impact my life?
3- What bodily signals am I overlooking?
4 - What is the hidden story behind not saying no?
5 - Where did I get these stories?

They give concrete tips and ideas for a more wholehearted life and do it without making you feel guilty or like you need to change. Their views on parenting speak right to my heart and I am so grateful for the work they put into their thoughts every week. They’re changing my family one episode at a time.

In this episode, we delve into why it's important to actually feel and process the difficult stuff, specifically the big emotion of anger. We know that flying off the handle in anger isn’t helpful, but neither is bottling it up. So where does that leave us? How can we process it in a healthy way? We use the work of Gabor Mate and Susan Cain to explore answers to this important question.

Today Felica chats with host of Your Parenting Mojo, Jen Lumanlan about how we can identify and tame our internal triggers to create healthier relationships with our kids. This work often involves delving into our personal BIG T or little t trauma as well as "trauma" that is less obvious; we discuss how we can work with these triggers and how to do so in a safe space. We all go through hard times. People we love experience hard things. What do we do when we are faced with the suffering of others? It can be easy to either push it away because it is too painful to see, or we can go the other way and fully immerse ourselves in a way that is more enmeshment than compassion.
In this episode, Taralyn shares some personal experiences that have recently invited her to delve deep into what it means to be compassionate. She uses the work of Brene Brown, Kristin Neff, and Chris Germer to define what compassion is, what it is not, and how to use the power of true compassion to love people in the middle of their suffering.

The beginning of school, separation from parents for a date night or work, or any change or transition can be difficult for kids and their emotions. In this episode, we draw on the wisdom of the book Good Inside to give lots of tips around this topic and make these situations easier.
We also provide an alternative lens to look at whining through, and give several helpful tips on how to handle this universally annoying sound of our children whining. (It bothers all of us, right?:)

How can we give from a place of wholeness without being drained? How can we truly receive what life has to offer us (and the gifts people give us) from a place of gratitude instead of emptiness or resistance?
In this episode, Taralyn gives some tips on how to deepen our experience of giving and receiving that will enhance our lives instead of depleting us.

A parenting podcast for all the ages
I have been listening to Find the Magic for a long time now and appreciate thaty they provide info that spans from mom of newborns to parents of teens. They have kids in all stages (similar to me) and also connect to women in general (they don’t only talk about things related to being a mom). They share parenting tips and info on many great books, but also lots of information about mediation, miracle mornings and taking time for ourselves amidst the chaos of parenthood. I can’t recommend this podcast enough!

If you'd like to skip the center relaxation part, you can finish the guided meditation, and then skip to 14:30 so you be sure to be counted up out of the deep subconscious state.

The biggest help to me and my parenting
Since I have been listening to this podcast i have been such a better parent! They are so uplifting, yet real. I love how to the point they are with thing but have fun in it too. Great balance and great advice that applies perfectly! Thank you ladies!

Thank you all for your amazing support!!! We are soooo grateful for the most amazing listeners in the entire world:).
Sometimes, it feels like it's the cool kid thing to do to complain about parenthood all the time. On the other hand, it can be easy to portray our children as heavenly cherubs who do no wrong and parentland as being full of only bliss. It's a tricky balance to find between being honest about the fact that parenting isn’t unicorns and roses all the time, but also realizing that it is also a great honor and really meaningful work to engage in.
In this episode, we talk about that balance and wrestle with how to be authentic to ourselves, recognizing and asking for help when it’s hard, and soaking in the moments of love and enjoyment when they come. We hope you leave it feeling like you aren’t alone in your struggles and in your joys. Parenting is full of both.

We live in a world that prizes a narrow body ideal, and it is easy to find our own perceptions of ourselves swayed by this view. In this episode, we discuss the brilliant body image work of Lexie and Lindsay Kite in their book, More Than a Body. We discuss how we can leave the waters of self objectication, where we experience the world through an outsider’s perspective of our bodies, onto the firm land of embodiment, where we can truly experience life IN our bodies, through our own experience of them. It’s a game changing concept.
We address issues like positive body image, and agree that “Positive body image isn't believing your body looks good; it is knowing your body is good, regardless of how it looks.” It’s a revolutionary concept that we believe can change the world for the better for men and women, as we reject objectification and make peace with our bodies and experience truly living inside of ourselves.

THE ONLY PODCAST I RELIGIOUSLY LISTEN TO
This podcast saved my motherhood!

She discusses the value of not squandering our anger but finding space for it. Can we see anger without shame and allow it to guide us to connection with our kids? Can we be genuine with them so they can see us as a separate being worthy of respect?

Review of the week byEllison RN:
STUMBLED UPON THIS PODCAST
I’m normally not a podcast person, but I found this one and love it! … Often times we hear what we should be doing without any encouragement for what we are actually doing. I found the lack of “do it like this” completely wonderful and tips for just dealing with my emotions or changing my mindset is what I needed. I’m in my late 30s and luckily listen to my own instincts. Just great to have the support thrown out there for doing just that! Thank you!

That’s tricky enough. However, even when we allow ourselves the time to sleep, sometimes our kids simply don’t cooperate in allowing us to get several hours of consecutive sleep. What can we do then? In this episode, we address some coping strategies to help you when you are dealing with this special brand of sleep deprivation.
We also talk about how it can be tricky to find connection time with our kids once school starts and give some tips that have helped us.

I’ve been so thrilled with this podcast. It’s been a huge help and has made me feel like I’m not alone in my challenges. You both are inspiring to me and helped me decide to learn to play the piano in the next 5 years after listening to your episode on a grown mindset.

Life is about making lots of choices and finding balance, and there is no one answer that works for everyone. In this episode, Taralyn talks about keeping the embers of dreams alive while you try to find that balance for yourself and what works in your life. Her three tips for deepening the experience of developing your own gifts are to 1) remember what you loved as child, 2) carve out a little bit of space every day to keep furthering your gifts as you incubate them for another season in your life, and 2) periodically finding some time to do a deep plunge into whatever your gifts are.

REVIEW OF THE WEEK from Katie Jo 555
...I love this podcast and recommend it to everyone...Every episode leaves me feeling refreshed and ready to take on another day of motherhood--rather than feeling guilty for all of the ways I'm failing like some other parenting resources can make me feel. FTM has been with me through my best seasons of motherhood, and my hardest. I always always come back for more and I hope y'all never stop! Thank you use much for all of the heart, wisdom, and encouragement you share here. I"m a better mama and a better ME because of you.

As we shift from summer to fall this year, we discuss our very favorite tips on how to capitalize on these opportunities. Our children’s education, however that looks, whether in the home or out of the home, affects the rhythm of the whole family. With it, we have the chance to help our kids fly while still creating a beautiful grounding nest for them to connect with the heartbeat of the home.

I’m only one episode in and I have to leave a review. This podcast is the magic! It is the magic that I found! I am so impressed by the concept from the episode about acceptance, joy and enthusiasm. Do you remember the insecurity around discovering yourself? Now, imagine your teenage self with not only a school full of peers to compare yourself to, but with an entire internet full of people to measure up to, to compete with for likes, and pictures of parties you weren’t invited to. Can you imagine how hard that would be? Well many of our kids are experiencing just that. They are floundering in the deep end of a virtual pool before their brains are developed enough to metaphorically swim.
The research is coming in fast about the giant social experiment of putting the pocket-sized computers into the hands of young children and teens, and the results are…alarming, to say the least. In this episode, we are thrilled to discuss this important subject with social activist and champion of giving back our children a healthy childhood, the late Collin Kartchner. We are devastated at his passing but want his legacy and his message to live on.
Collin helps us to understand the direness of the situation concerning kids and their internet consumption, specifically social media and online gaming. These platforms are designed specifically to give our minds dopamine hits, which can to dependence, and provides the false sense of connection that kids are craving. This can create a vacuum in their minds that may lead to depression and lack of connection to people around them.
Although this information at first paints a bleak picture for childhood, we discuss the beautiful antidote that is at all of our fingertips: connection. REAL connection with actual humans in our lives. Collin offers concrete advice about trying out a family screen detox, and gives us lots of inspiring suggestions on how to increase the connection in our own home with the people we love. His rallying cry to #savethekids will truly inspire you and leave you hopeful that you can truly make a difference in your child’s life (and how to model freedom from screen dependence yourself:)!

In this episode, we revisit our very favorite pieces of knowledge on the subject by combining our two most popular discussions about it. We address issues like how to cultivate respectful, strong, and kind boys by channeling their natural strengths (as opposed to simply suppressing all of their tendencies and making them feel like they are terrible all the time). We explore some fascinating psychology and hopefully help all of us raise boys who become men who are whole, respectful, humans who make this world a better place:).
We also review the four pillars of connection, getting outside, sleep, and nutrition, and we tackle the challenges and opportunities that boys face at school and learning. We address the research on screen time and boys’ brains, and give you all sorts of tips to make screen time a pleasant activity with boundaries instead of an unlimited source of distraction and dependency. We have such an AMAZING opportunity as parents to really create a community where they can thrive with their own natural strengths, and we can help create a world where boys are taught to have emotional intelligence and access their internal world with confidence and love. Our bodies are our conduits for experiencing this life. It makes sense that caring for them from a place of love is a worthy investment for us. Self care is part of wholehearted living for both our body and our soul. Sometimes, when people talk about self care, they mention expensive hair products and elaborate pedicures. At Find the Magic, we are big fans of the kind of soul filling self care that is more about true fulfillment (think meditation, time with God, feeding our intellect, etc.). So, when it comes to our bodies, it makes sense that we like the idea of going beyond image based self care and going deeper into truly nourishing our body with foods and love. In this episode, Ali Essig, a plant-based holistic nutritionist and educator, gives us lots of priceless information on how vegetables and fruit are a beautiful, accessible form of self care. In fact, we love it. In this episode, we go way deep discussing Gary Zukav’s book, The Seat of the Soul. We can see why Oprah loves his work so much.
We explore how the personality is different from the soul, but “when the personality comes fully to serve the energy of its soul, that is authentic empowerment.” It takes practice and awareness to differentiate between the workings of our own personality and the growth of our soul. The tools we can use for this process are choosing intentions, adding clarity, practicing forgiveness, and distinguishing true needs from false ones.
The umbrella that covers all of these topics is love. “An authentically powered person lives in love. Love is the energy of the soul. Love is what heals the personality. There is nothing that cannot be healed by love. There is nothing but love.”
