Val Kilmer was an excellent actor who could do it all. Whether he was the lead, a supporting character, or Batman himself, Kilmer always left his mark. Most people know him from Tombstone - and rightfully so! We talk about our fondest memories of one of the best actors of this generation.

People already know there is no way a whole year will go by without a Stephen King adaptation. 2025 is testing how many King works movie going audiences will go out and see. We already talked about The Monkey, so what is next? We also do something different this week. Anyone up for a speed run?

Demonoid from 1981 has an awesome poster. Why there are scantily clad babes clinging to a demon a la Conan the Barbarian is something the film never answers. The vampire in the background also remains a mystery. Still, it is an awesome poster that horror movie fans should check out.

Regrettably, the film is nowhere near as good. It is a confusing mess that does not bother to explain much. No one has any definable motivation and the twist ending seems to go against what seems to be the hand’s ultimate plan. It seems like the filmmakers did not know whether Demonoid was heading to theaters or network television and the score is straight out of the 1970s. There is a weird charm to it, but is it enough?

The Hell House LLC franchise is a cult favorite that often gets overlooked. When it was announced the writer/director Stephen Cognetti would be releasing a straight forward haunted house story, we were excited. His work in found footage was excellent and we wanted to see how it would translate to a more narrative form of storytelling.

Unsurprisingly, the scares were the best part of 825 Forest Road. It is in the actual storytelling where the film loses a little of its luster. While there is nothing that is outright bad, there are some very noticeable flaws. The attempts at family drama fall flat and there is very little character development. The ending would have been fine for found footage, but for an actuall movie…?

Last year there was talk of the new Strangers trilogy all being released in the same year. Perhaps wisely, that never happened. Instead, it is replacing a popular franchise on this year’s release schedule. Friday the 13th is one of the most well-known horror franchises of all time. We were excited to hear that a prequel series would be coming. Years ago, Crystal Lake went quiet and we pretty much forgot about it. Out of nowhere, a recent casting announcement was made, and it’s a good one that has got us eager again.

When a movie is called L.A. Aids Jabber, it is hard not to worry. Especially when it is a shot on video from the early 1990s. SOV movies are very hit and miss and adding in a frightening disease as a scare tactic is a sure recipe for disaster. We were prepared for the worst. As it turns out, the film may be the nicest Aidsploitation movie ever made. There is none of the expected homophobia, jokes about sick people, or misconceptions about AIDS. Instead it focuses on its tale of murder, madness, and jabbin’. Over the top performances, subplots that go nowhere, and a nonsensical twist ending made this an absolute treat.

At the other end of the spectrum, is A Cursed Man. It is a great idea. In order to discover if dark magic is real, a filmmaker decides to have a curse put on himself. It is similar to horror movies when someone does not believe in a talisman, urban legend, or ritual and decides to tempt fate. It does not take long for the documentary to go completely off the rails.

The director admits to having no clear plan or direction, everyone laughs off what has decided to do, and worst of all, the subject is one of the most insufferable people ever captured on film. Even his own wife does not seem to take him seriously. The whole thing comes off as a carny act that is as frustrating as it is disappointing.

Single White Female from 1992 is an interesting movie. It seemed to be a big deal at the time, but neither of us remember anything about it. The rumors of Jenna Ortega starring in a remake are certainly interesting, however. The Saw franchise brings back a lot of pleasant memories. Sure, the vast majority of them are tied to the first, but the same can be said about most long running movie series. Naturally, we have opinions about the cancellation of Saw XI and its future.

Though we do not have the opportunity to cover them as much as we would like to, we enjoy short films. In this episode we get to talk about three shorts from the Boston Underground Festival. A gory anthology, the truth about banjo strings, and a really cool stop motion flick all caught our attention.

Another movie from BUFF that interested us was Chain Reactions. That it was about The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was cool enough. Chainsaw is one of the most important horror movies of all time and has a special place in our childhoods. That Stephen King is also prominently featured made it impossible for us to ignore.

Alexandre O. Phillipe is a great filmmaker who has made tremendous documentaries about David Lynch, Alien, and The Exorcist. His signature style is on full display here as Chain Reactions is a perfect mix of nostalgia, theory, and opinion on Tobe Hooper’s classic. It is a must watch.

It has literally been years since we have reviewed a documentary about a cult. So, we were very excited to watch AUM: The Cult at the End of the World. We knew it would be interesting, but we had no idea what to expect. One of us was so dumbfounded by what they saw that they could only use one word to describe it.

Aum is unlike any other cult. (Somehow, it is still in existence - kinda.) At its peak, it could legitimately claim worldwide membership that was in the tens of thousands. The existed in full view of the public, Worst of all, they had a relationship with the media that can only be described as friendly. It is a truly wild documentary.

Horror is all about its franchises. Audiences love their old favorites so much that there is always a steady stream of news about the next possible legacy sequel. A Quiet Place is a new addition that has released two installments and a prequel. Each has done well but is a third one pushing their luck?

There will never be a dearth of Stephen King adaptations to watch. He has an endless well of work for filmmakers to pull from. Even better, there is no need to make new movies when you can constantly remake the things that have already been done. Kind of like Netflix and Cujo.

Over the years we have had the chance to cover some great stuff from SXSW. Just last year, Dead Mail ended up being one of our picks for our favorite movies of 2024. So it should come as no surprise that we were really looking forward to what the fest had to offer this year. And we got two good ones.

Redux Redux is a revenge tale that takes place throughout the parallel universes. It sounds kinda goofy, but it works thanks to a grounded approach that avoids going too deep into the science fiction aspects. The character driven approach focuses pretty much exclusively on its two protagonists - for better and for worse.

You never realize how poorly teenagers are written in movies until you see someone do a great job of it. Clown in the Cornfield has some of the best teenagers seen in movies in years. Thanks to a combination of great writing and strong performances, everything just seems natural. And even in the best movies surrounding younger characters, this is not always the case.

The cast of Clown in the Cornfield stand out without overshadowing its story. But it is not the only thing the film has going for it. The plot is as wacky as the title suggests. There are over the top kills, lots of blood, and of course, a killer clown. Its predictability is part of its charm and it is an all around fun slasher.

Will screenlife movies become the found footage of the next generation? Though there have been some noticeable outliers, the genre has not really taken off with audiences. But what if you do one that is also a creature feature plus has family drama. We also review an uncomfortable psychological thriller starring Geoffrey Rush and John Lithgow.

This year Blake watched the Oscars while Nathaniel could care less about them. We talk about Demi Moore not winning for The Substance, Quentin Tarantino's amazing casting track record, and record long speeches. The Ready or Not sequel has added a notable name to its cast. Are we ready for it?

There is something about screenlife movies that just does not work for us. Host was great and Dashcam was fun, but they usually end up being more frustrating than anything else. Bloat was no different as the filmmaking took us out of it on a number of levels. We could not even imagine why it was done in this style to being with.

If the movie were shot in a more traditional style it probably would have been better, but that does not mean it would have been good. The writing is awful presenting the audience with characters that are shallow at best. There is no payoff for the monster and the ending is downright confusing. Maybe we should stick to found footage.

The Rule of Jenny Pen was discomforting for different reasons. When you have Rush and Lithgow leading the way, you now acting is not going to be a problem. The atmosphere is a bleak one that only gets darker as the plot progresses. Before long, things have escalated to levels that are almost impossible to watch.

But you do not want to look away. That is what makes it such a great film. It is touch to watch and filled with a sense of sadness and hopelessness. It also has two compelling leads and a riveting story. The Rule of Jenny Pen will is an unforgettable watch - for better and for worse.

The Monkey has had a creative marketing run. Rejection emails, funny posters, and an interesting Super Bowl halftime show were all a part of it. This also meant that the actual movie had a lot to live up to. Tonally, it is exactly what some might have expected. But what about those who didn’t know what they were getting into?

The trailers focus on the most outrageous aspects of the plot, but how it came across on screen may be surprising to some. Dark humor and graphic violence are combined with a story about family. It is over the top while also having a lighthearted quality. The marketing also include a Super Bowl halftime show and church screenings. It was all very creative, but how well did it work?

There is plenty of gore in the movie, but there was also an attempt at a heartfelt story. The message came across - and in many ways it is a very dark one - but this is also the weakest part of The Monkey. The willingness of Osgood Perkins to lean into the wackier parts of the story along with some incredible performances really end up making the difference.

It may be too soon to say Perkins is the best modern horror director, but it is definitely time to take him into consideration. We talk about how he stacks up next to his contemporaries and what sets him apart. We also review where this adaptation sits next to all the other King stories of the 21st century.

A few weeks back we lamented on the lack of fantasy movies. They were a part of our childhoods that we love and missed. As if on cue, we talk about the news regarding the new Red Sonja movie - another childhood favorite. We also revisit Dead Mail before it debuts on Shudder in April.

The 1970s were the peak of nunsploitation. It would not last long, but a number of memorable nun horror films were released. While it has not returned to that level, there has been an increase in genre films centered around nuns. Perhaps even more surprising is that they have often been pretty good.

The Baby in the Basket has a lot going for it. It looks like a Gothic horror movie straight out of the 70s. It also leans into its wacky premise. From the demonic baby to some graphic sexual content, this movie does not play around. It is unfortunate that as much effort was not put into the writing.

Rob Zombie is a polarizing figure in the horror community. While some love the shock value of his movies, others wonder if he really likes horror movies or is just trying to turn everyone against them. So when we heard that his brother Spider One had written and directed a horror movie we were interested. Especially after we saw the trailer which hinted that Little Bites was about a monster that is slowly eating a person alive.

Yes, it is early in the year and yes, Nosferatu was an incredibly creepy villain, but did we come across the best Big Bad of 2025? Agyar is definitely a frightening creature. Every scene he is in will make your skin crawl. You cannot wait for him to get off the screen. And this is meant as a compliment.

There are some noticeable missteps along the way. For the most part, they can be chalked up to Spider One’s feature film inexperience. That being said, they do stick out in and leave a negative aftertaste. But how much do they affect Little Bites? And what does Cher have to do with everything?

The most recent season of True Detective was the most divisive in the show’s history. The first one was universally praised, while the second caught a lot of heat. For whatever reason, the third season flew under the radar. We talk about our opinions of season four and the news surrounding the show’s future.

Hammer Studios is an important part of horror history. It introduced aspects to vampire lore that is still seen today and its use of gothic sexuality and romance would inspire many filmmakers. They have been quiet for decades so the recent announcement has us both excited.

David Cronenberg may not have invented body horror, but he is the same most associated with it. His early movies made with the help of the Canadian government are especially interesting. The DIY quality and balls to the wall attitude make them some of the most fun entries in his impressive catalogue.

Still, it is fair to say that The Brood is not the best movie he has ever made. A disjointed affair that has trouble sticking the landing, the film is carried by some impressive performances. We may have been confused by what we saw, but did that prevent us from enjoying it?

It seems like we have been working off of a list this year. We started with a vampire movie, moved on to alien invasions and have talked about a zombie apocalypse. So it only makes sense that we would review a haunted house flick. Especially one that has heavy religious themes.

It is a shame that Inhabitants could not stick to a formula. The team behind it were more concerned with using a plot device they clearly had no knowledge about instead of actually writing a coherent film. The end result is a lead that seems aloof and unloving, a villain that seems justified in its actions, and a whole lot of nonsense.

Recent indie horror releases have benefitted from creative marketing. The upcoming Super Bowl halftime show for The Monkey is a great example. We also talk about the return of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the surprising reason one of us did not want anything to do with it the first time around.

They do not make as many fantasy movies as they used to. A Knight’s War is a welcome addition that checks off all the boxes. Armor clad knights, seductive witches, and magical battles are all found here. It does such a good job of being a fantasy adventure that it took one of us some time to get into it.

But the film makes it very easy to get into its story. Strong world building and characters will draw audiences in. Still, when you are doing a sword and sorcery story, it is best to go with less. We discuss how A Knight’s War went too far, and why it still worked for us.

For the second week in a row, our feature presentation is from the Sundance Film Festival. Didn’t Die is pretty much the exact opposite of what we talked about on our last show. From its more grounded story (as grounded as a zombie movie can be) to its use of black and white, the film wants to bring audiences into a world they can relate with.

This was especially easy for us since the plot focuses on a podcaster trying to maintain her audience, but the fantastic characters also drew us in. There were some flaws along the way - particularly with the beginning and the ending - but it is a strong entry to the zombie sub-genre.

Labyrinth is a cult classic. But how did things get to this point? We have contrasting memories of its initial popularity. And we both agree it is not the best work from any of the major players involved. Now that Robert Eggers is involved with the sequel, what does the future hold?

What does it mean when a film is described as Lynchian? From what we can tell, the definition has changed over the years. The only reason we are even covering 2016’s Always Shine is because the word often used to describe it is “Lynchian”. It does fit one definition of the term. Unfortunately, that is not necessarily a good thing.

At a very base level, it sounds like Mulholland Drive. But this is more than a movie about two actresses in Los Angeles. In a way, it is almost the exact opposite of Lynch’s film. We talk about the odd way it tries to build mystery and tension, the characters, and its abrupt ending.

It is no surprise that we are covering a movie from the Sundance Film Festival. It will be shocking to some that we are reviewing a movie that features alien tentacle sex. Of course, if you are a long time listener, you know we have been down this path before. Will this time be as good as the first time around?

Touch Me has a lot going on. Along with inter-species sex, there are themes of codependency, friendship, and trust. It is filled with funny moments and has some great performances. But when it gets dark, it gets really ugly. Do the jarring tonal changes make it impossible to enjoy it?

David Lynch is one of the most important names in genre cinema. He is a creative artist who has given the world some of the most beautiful and confounding films and television ever. His impact on cinema cannot be overstated. We reflect on what he means to us.

We started off this year covering Nosferatu from Robert Eggers. One of the things we talked about was how we just seems to understand horror. Check out the episode to hear our full thoughts, but the cliff notes version is that we loved it. The recent news about his next project has us excited.

We have been wanting to cover The Day of the Triffids for a while now. As the title suggests, it is a science fiction horror movie from the early 1960s (and it is based on a book from the 1950s). The story is about a mysterious event that leaves a majority of the world blind and some aggressive plants even deadlier.

In a decade filled with invading Martians, teenage werewolves, and all sorts of drive in creature features, the triffids manage to stand out. But are they the best from the era? There are so many differences from the book, the movie can be referred to as a spin off or triffid tale. We talk about the pros and cons of going in this direction.

The deserved success of The Substance will lead to more body horror movies. (At the very least, there will be more films willing to call themselves body horror.) This week we cover a film that covers much of the same ground, but in a more focused manner. Grafted may be the perfect movie for us to cover as we return to form.

That does not mean it is not without its issues. Pacing, tone, and character development are just some of the things we were not impressed with So, what else is left? The performances were fine and there were some gross moments. But it would be fair to say that it lacks…substance.

Chances are that nothing from the Poohniverse will be in our favorite movies of any year. But that will not stop us from talking about it every chance we get. Blood and Honey may have burned us so badly we have not even considered watching another entry, but maybe the combined powers of the twisted versions of Peter Pan, Tigger, and Mary Poppins will be enough to save the burgeoning franchise.

Until Dawn is the flip side. It is a creative video game that brings audiences into its world better than some of the horror movies it is influenced by. The only surprise is that it took this long to turn it into a movie. Early test screenings have been positive. Unless you ever played the video game.

There were a lot of great genre releases in 2024. The Substance has rightfully received the lion’s share of attention. Along with the fantastic performances from Moore and Margaret Qualley, it has a great story and fantastic gore. It is not just one of the best horror movies of the year; it can stand up to anything that can out during the year.

Independent horror had a record setting year. Late Night With the Devil became the biggest release in the history of IFC. It is a unique take on found footage and has some of the most memorable moments of the year. Thanks in part to its clever marketing campaign, Longlegs became a surprise box office hit. We talk about why it still resonates with us and what it means to genre cinema in general.

Some of the best horror films of the year flew under the radar. Stopmotion featured some of the best storytelling of the year, Realm of Satan is a unique look at Satanists, and Falling Stars is a modern folk horror tale that is relatable and creepy. We have a lot to talk about on this week’s show.

We covered over fifty movies that were released in 2024. Naturally, some were better than others. Unfortunately, when you cover as much stuff as we did, some things end up being bad. As in, REALLY bad. Over the next two weeks, we are going to talk about the films from 2024 that stood out the most to us. First things first, we are messing with the worst.

It’s not often that movies make us mad. Bored or frustrated, but actual anger? That just does not happen. Especially when you deal with indie cinema as much as we do. We understand that budgets will not be as high, there are not as many resources, and creativity is not limited to the script. Indie films get a pass from us when it comes to special effects, limited locations, and at times, the acting.

But there are times when a movie will leave us with a very bad impression. (Blake is still fuming over Soft & Quiet.) This year, we covered two of the most infuriating films we have ever seen. One of them seemed like it was an intentional slap to the faces of anyone who has ever claimed to like horror movies. It made a point of making things very personal. The other was a documentary that stubbornly refused to back up any of its claims, had nothing interesting to say, and even lied to the audience.

Thankfully, there were films that managed to just simply be bad. We discuss a thematic trilogy that was a great idea in theory, a supposed body horror movie that is more confusing than captivating, and a script that sounds like it was written by an edgy fifteen year old. This week we look back on our least favorite movies of 2024.

When did vampires become tragically romantic figures? They certainly were not when Bram Stoker wrote Dracula. Bela Lugosi brought class to the character, but he did not make anyone swoon. Whether it was Hammer or Anne Rice, by the time Twilight stole hearts, vampires were sexy.

We try to avoid rumors. We have no issues talking about speculation from unnamed sources, but just straight up gossip and fan casting isn’t really our thing. That is what the internet and social media is for. But if it involves a couple of our favorites, we have not choice but to chime in.

There are a number of criminally overlooked characters in Hollywood. The most underused may be the Universal monsters. Everyone knows who they are - Dracula, Frankenstein, the Wolf Man - but they never seem to get their just due. This is especially true of the Mummy. Are things about to change?

Heist movies tend to be a lot of fun. Unfortunately, we have not covered many bank robbery movies on our humble little podcast. And this year’s attempts at Christmas horror have frankly fallen flat. To end the year, we found something that checks off both boxes.

There are a lot of shocking things about 1961’s Cash on Demand. And the fact it was made by the renowned Hammer Film Productions may be the least. The story of a cold bank manager who has to deal with a charming bank robber does not sound all that original. Cash on Demand makes it work with strong performances, wit, and great characters.

After talking about a disturbing dream involving Tom Cruise, we talk about movie franchises. There is talk of the MCU, Aliens, and Universal monsters, but what’s really on our minds is what is next for the M3gan Universe. We also share our memories on 28 Days Later and discuss the upcoming sequel.

Christmas may be the second spookiest time of year, but it is still surprising just how many holiday horror movies are out there. Just when you think you have heard about all of them, Tubi shows you there are way more than you could ever imagine. It is overwhelming. Until you see a movie called The Elf in which the titular character goes on a killing spree.

If only it were as simple as it sounded. What should be a silly holiday horror watch turns into a serious character study about….paranoia? Maybe? It is easy to say The Elf makes no sense, but that would be an insult to every nonsensical movie ever. The acting is awful, there seems to be no script, and things move painfully slow. On the plus side, there is a cool kill involving gift wrap.

We may not be card carrying members of the UFO community, but we enjoy hearing stories about extraterrestrials. The Program had promise. UFO documentaries have to contain a certain amount of sensationalism, but this one seemed like it would be a little more grounded. And there was some good stuff here. It’s unfortunate that it relied so much on old tricks.

We loved The Substance. The performances were fantastic, the story was entertaining, and the effects were great. It was sexy, funny, and gross. Its slew of Golden Globes nods have us very excited about the movie and the future of genre cinema. Final Destination 6 is a different story.

Ray Wise and Lin Shaye in a holiday horror movie sounds like a great idea. As a matter of fact, Dead End from 2003 does a lot of things right. Creepy road horror tends to be fun, there is a good kill or two, and there are even some funny moments. Unfortunately, the bad outweighs the good.

The film does not get the atmosphere right until it is just about over, most of the gore is told instead of shown, and none of the comedy seems to be intentional. Worst of all is the title. It is so on the nose that it will end up slipping by some people. To top it all off, it has the type of ending that pretty much everyone hates.

Replicator gets off to a great start. This is quickly followed up by a looooooong courtroom scene that ruins all the goodwill that was built. As it turns out, the open was just a tease while what followed is a more accurate portrayal of what the movie actually is. And that is not even the worst of its problems.

George A. Romero shaped modern horror, invented zombies as we know them, and is just an overall legend. Resident Evil is one of the most well-known horror franchises in the world. What would have happened if the two ever came together? We also talk about the Cape Fear series that is coming to Apple TV.

Tony Todd is a horror icon. We wanted to cover one of his lesser known movies. It was not important if the film was “good” or not. We just wanted something that conveyed the essence of Todd. When we saw Hellblazers, we figured it was the perfect choice.

Even forgetting whether it is good (spoiler alert: it isn’t), it was a horrible choice. Todd is only given a pair of scenes; the sum total does not even equal five minutes. This is Hellblazers in a nutshell. There are lots of hints at a perfectly acceptable horror movie that instead leave the audience with lots of questions. Why is it set during Christmas? Why spend so much time discussing a dog that never shows up? Why show chicken fat?

While we admit 1987’s Street Trash is a cult classic filled with great special effects, we do not like it. Which is why we want into its remake with some skepticism. As it turns out, director Ryan Kruger surpasses everything the original did. It is raunchy, silly, and very very gory.

Tony Todd is a legend in horror. Most know him from the iconic Candyman, but there is so much more to him. Though he mainly worked in genre, he managed to find mainstream success. From popular horror franchises to much loved science fiction, Todd left behind an impressive body of work.

Rod Serling is a fantastic writer and possibly the greatest host of all time. His legacy looms over much of modern horror. Every anthology ever owes him a debt of gratitude. We talk about how little we know of the man despite his accolades and the upcoming documentary about his life.

We have wanted to do a Christian horror movie for a long time. This week we talk about 2014’s The Lock In and we have so many questions. Did the film have a script? How many times did people who were not in the movie walk into the shot? Is this an anti porn or an anti dumpster diving story? All this is before we even get to the movie itself!

Surprisingly, The Lock In is a pretty straight forward horror movie. While that probably improves the overall quality, it was still disappointing to us. We also try to figure out of all the problems that were plaguing the country in 2014 why this plot centered around the harm pornography is causing. We also talk about how an awful ending is an awful ending no matter what your message may be.

Strange Darling received rave reviews upon it’s release. The Substance has been wowing audiences since winning the Best Screenplay award at its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. We usually start the show off with the latest genre news. It may be time to just start calling our opening segment, “What remake is next?” This week it is all about the Wayans brothers returning to the Scary Movie franchise. In a Violent Way is unlike any slasher that has come out since…well, possibly ever. It uses some of the expected tropes - over the top kills, friends camping in the woods, a Big Bad who cannot be stopped - but it is the rare film in the subgenre that critics seem to love. But what do audiences think?

For years we have talked about how we trust the opinions the the audiences over critics. We were once told that we are just guys who watch movies. We have totally embraced that and completely agree. At the same time, we spend each week taking apart movies and, well, critiquing them. Obviously, this puts us in an awkward position. But it also means we are a combination that makes the best authority. So, what did we think of In a Violent Nature?

Normally, nostalgia is a good thing. Especially when it gives you the chance to look back on your teenage years. Yeah, there is some embarrassing stuff that will make you shake your head, but coming of age stories are popular for a reason. And besides, the stupid stuff you did when you were fifteen is a lot easier to explain than the dumb shit you do in your forties.

Director’s Cut is a reminder of younger days. It is the rare instance when it is not a good thing. Juvenile writing, horrible characters, and writing that is too on the nose are just some of the examples of what went wrong. And those may be its strong points.

It has been years since the new Blade movie was announced to much fanfare. Since then there have been rumors and turmoil. With the latest news that the movie has been removed from its release date of next year, now is the time to ask; is Blade cursed?

VHS tapes were a huge part of our young lives. They shaped what movies we would watch for the rest of our lives. Advancements in technology have made them all but obsolete for any reason aside from collecting. That is what makes the recent announcement regarding Alien: Romulus so exciting.

There are a number of well known horror anthologies. The most popular may be a Halloween one that spawned a franchise, costumes, and is loved by adults and kids. This week, we talk about 10-31. Five stories in an hour and a half. Great special effects, gory slashings, a story one of us could remember nothing about. This movie has it all.

One of the most important parts of Halloween is the fun that surrounds it. We all love a good scare, but this is also the time of year to have a good laugh. Members Club is an import from the UK that is filled with scary moments, but also tells a heartwarming story.

Folk horror complete with witches, hags, and symbols? Check. Disgusting kills? You got it. Full frontal nudity? Plenty. This is a horror movie that knows how to gross its audience out while having fun at the same time. It is not just perfect for Halloween; it is an all around good time.

We had a long talk about the Terrfier franchise and Art the Clown last week. Based on the surprising box office receipts from this past weekend, it would seem we are in the minority. When did that ever change our opinions? Plus, everybody dies. And that’s fucked up.

Has there ever been an internet challenge that isn’t stupid? Ghost Game offers up possibly the dumbest one yet. Those who do the challenge are tasked to break into a house and live with the inhabitant without getting caught. Bad idea for a prank; great premise for a horror movie.

Along with a great premise, Ghost Game boasts a near perfect setting. It takes place in a home that looks just like you think a haunted house should. The grounded story gives a different feel to what is otherwise a very traditional horror story. It operates on many levels.

It is a shame that the writing is unable to keep up. The characters lack motivation and much of the plot feels directionless. We do not expect much from any haunted house movie; we just want to have a good time. For everything it does right, Ghost Game does even more wrong.

Falling Stars is a modern folk horror tale about witches. Putting the story in the isolated American southwest is a wise decision. There is a sense of loneliness and fear that goes beyond the supernatural. Paradoxically, the idea of togetherness is a very strong theme.

The film is a patient one that builds tension through strong storytelling. The performances are fantastic and there is great chemistry between the three leads. It is a slow burn, but it is something to put on your radar. Falling Stars tells a beautiful and frightening story that works for any time of year.

Christmas is the second scariest holiday of the year. From scary decorations to Christmas horror movies, there are a lot of things for horror fans to look forward to during the Yuletide season. It makes complete sense that Spirit Halloween would have a Spirit Christmas store. Though it is disappointing that they do not seem to be going a more horror-centric direction with it.

We know what we are in for when we are going to cover a movie from The Asylum. Halloween Night from 2006 sounded as original as anything else they have ever done. The plot focuses on a young boy who has spent a decade in an asylum and is now heading home to wreak havoc. Oh yeah. It is also set on Halloween.

If only it were that derivative. The story somehow manages to be straightforward and confusing. The Big Bad is one of the best from the studio. Unfortunately, he is offset by a lead who is one of the worst in cinema history. This describes Halloween Night in a nutshell. For everything it does right, it does a number of things completely wrong. But if you are participating in a 31 Days Horror Challenge is it worth a watch?

We have covered a few Stephen King adaptations on our humble little podcast. We have yet to cover a really great one. The third Salem's Lot remake had a lot going against it. The source material is one of King's best and Tobe Hooper's take on the story is iconic. Add in that the 2024 version has been in limbo for a few years and you have a recipe for disappointment.

We have yet to cover a truly awesome King movie, but the latest version of Salem's Lot does a lot of good things. The question here is not if it is actually good, but will people accept it? It seems to boil down to how familiar you are with other versions of the tale. It is by no means a masterpiece, but it may serve as a great introduction into one of the most important names in horror history.

When was the last great take on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein? We try to figure that out as we discuss the upcoming Netflix release from Guillermo del Toro. It probably has a lot more going for it than the Anaconda remake starring Paul Rudd and Jack Black.

John Candy is an absolute legend. He was funny, charming, and a great actor. We leapt at the chance to cover one of his earliest roles. Not only was it a horror movie, but it was set on Halloween. Sure, he was still fining his way, but what better way to start the spooky season?

As it turns out, 1976’s The Clown Murders is one of the worst things we have ever covered on this show. Candy is a non-factor, the movie is filled with enough misogyny to make David (no longer) Lee Roth blush, and has exactly zero killings committed by a clown. On the plus side, the characters are annoying, the story makes absolutely no sense, and the ending will leave the audience confused.

Haunt Season sounds like it has the potential to be fun. Set in a haunted house attraction, a mysterious killer begins taking out the employees. It has been done countless times before and is the perfect watch for Halloween. The only question is whether the filmmakers and cast are able to pull it off or if it is just another boring slasher.

The movie constantly surprises. It is a slasher through and through, but it is tonally unlike many similar films. There is a documentary feel to Haunt Season that gives it a grounded and natural feel. The performances are perfect and the pacing draws anyone watching into the story. Add some great kills and you have an excellent watch for October.

We really didn’t care about the upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot. It just seemed like another tired reboot of what was already a ripoff. In other words, we weren't really interested. How did its latest casting announcement bring some credibility?

How long ago was the Blade movie announced? How many writer and director changes has it gone through? What are the chances that it begins production in the next three years? Is it even going to come out? In the meantime, there is the new vampire flick from Ryan Coogler to discusss.

It has literally been years since we last had a anthology on our humble little podcast. Tenants has an interesting premise. A woman wakes up in the parking garage of an apartment complex. As she looks for her sister, each encounter leads to horror.All the tools are here for a fun anthology. Stories of mysterious rashes, lost love, and awful roommates are just a part of m what Tenants has to offer. All are tropes of the subgenre, but the film makes odd decisions that negatively impact the viewing experience.

True crime documentaries have covered every subject you can think of. So what would be the point in making a fake one that is not a spoof? Strange Harvest: Occult Murder in the Inland Empire attempts to answer this question by weaving a captivating story filled with creepy characters and gory kills .It does not succeed at everything, but it is still one of the best entries in the genre.

It has been an odd year for horror at the box office. While the big name movies have done little to move the needle, indie horror is doing record breaking business. There is one notable exception that has not made this a complete shutout for horror in theaters. And it is not one of the many theatrical re-releases that have come out this year.

Voice of Shadows gets off to a confusing start. It has an emotionally charged monologue that is immediately followed by a title card that includes two upside down crosses and a pentagram. Someone watching will have no idea what to expect. It is not long before it is clear you are going to be in for a lot of the former and little of the latter.

It ends up being a rough watch and it is not hard to see why. The lead actor is not able to believably pull off what the script requires. This may not be entirely his fault - he is tasked to carry all of the film’s emotion for the entire hour and a half - but it is very noticeable. Paired with a cut and paste plot that still manages to be confusing and a litany of plot holes, and Voice of Shadows becomes a very rough watch.

Lord of Wolves is unlike any werewolf movie we have ever seen. (To be fair, to call it a werewolf movie is not entirely accurate.) It has a number of strong characters, a deep message, and relies little on transformations and gore. It is a character study, but not in the same way these types of films tend to be.

There is a lot going on here in a short amount of time. It really should not work. And yet, strong storytelling and a strong mystery will keep audiences interested. The creature design manages to be simultaneously badass and hokey. It could have been something special if not for one thing.

The Goonies is one of the most important movies of the 1980s. It is the perfect movie filled with adventure, humor, and a satisfying ending. There was never a sequel because there was not a need for one. But we are getting one anyway.There is no point in complaining about how there are too many remakes and sequels.The question is, are we excited to see it?

Where does gross out end and body horror begin? That is just one of the questions Booger had us pondering. The indie film recently made its world premiere at the Fantasia Film Festival. Unlike other movies in the genre, it covers deep themes such as grief, loss, and friendship. Just when it looked like it was going to be something really special, it falls apart, So, what happened?

Quinn Armstrong has not made it easy on us. His trilogy seemed like a lot of fun. Stories of exorcisms, doom metal, and death sound like a great combination for a couple of horror fans. While there was some good looking stuff in the first two films, they ended up leaving a bad taste in our mouths.

But there was no way Dead Teenagers could fail. It was about a group of friends hanging out at a cabin in the woods. Before long, their fun is interrupted by a masked killer. Yes, we had seen it before, but that was part of the fun. We could not wait to see what Armstrong did with a more straightforward horror story.

Regrettably, we never got that movie. Things start off normal enough. There is even a cool Big Bad that is the stuff of franchises. The archetypes are a little different and there is a slight tweak along the way, but Dead Teenagers is definitely a slasher. Until it gets a little too clever for its own good.

For all the talk of video games on our humble little podcast, we have never talked about Minecraft. And for one really good reason. Neither of us have ever played it. So the news of a new movie was a complete shock to us. The latest casting news from the new Masters of the Universe movie also caught us off-guard, though we were much more impressed.

Broken Bird recently made its world premiere at the U.K. Frightfest to positive reviews. The film sounds like a dour affair. A lonely woman works at a funeral parlor and escapes in daydreams and poetry. Adding to the bleakness is the story of a single mother mourning the loss of a child.

Not only is the movie surprisingly funny (darkly so, obviously) it is also filled with charm and life. It would have been something really special if not for some odd decisions. Sometimes an ending can be a little too wild, especially when you choose not to have a payoff for some of your movie's most important moments.

Wolves Against the World gets off to a great start. For a while it seems like it is going to be a badass rock and roll horror movie involving werewolves. It is not long before the film becomes something else entirely. In the process, it does away with any compelling characters or interesting story.

Years ago, we excitedly discussed the upcoming remake of Salem’s Lot. It was unclear whether it was going to hit theaters or go straight to streaming, but we could not wait. The release date came and went but the movie never came out. Supposedly, it comes out this October. Do we still care?

The Running Man seems to have gotten lost in the plethora of 1980s action movies. Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger at his peak and written by Stephen King, the dystopian sci-fi flick stands apart from the rest of the high octane releases of the time. And yet, no one talks about it. Maybe the upcoming remake directed by Edgar Wright and starring Glen Powell will change that.

Skincare story of a beautician who is being stalked sounds like it is either going to be an erotic thriller or a Lifetime movie. It has elements of both, but manages to stand on its own. Thanks to its strong writing, the Elizabeth Banks vehicle is able to take familiar tropes but never feel derivative. It leads to an odd mix of familiarity while providing something new and exciting. Plus, it is all based on a true story.

If only The Exorcism of Saint Patrick was as tightly written. The indie horror fails to set a strong tone and is a confusing watch. Is it a commentary against gay conversion? A supernatural revenge thriller? A story about a man who is losing his faith? In its attempt to try to be all of these things, it ends up being none of them. Can two strong performances overcome the flaws?

Few kids in the 1990s would have believed that Trent Reznor would go on to become an Oscar winning film composer. For some of us, it is even more surprising that Nine Inch Nails will be providing the soundtrack for the next Tron movie. We also talk about a recent casting announcement for Soulm8te.

Where to even begin when talking about Caligula? The stories behind the constantly changing screenplay are interesting. How actors refused huge paydays based on moral grounds is also ironic considering how fast and loose people are willing to play with their principles in Hollywood. The pornography, aftermath, and critical reevaluation are all important parts of the film’s mythos.

Caligula: The Ultimate Cut is an attempt to release the movie as original writer Gore Vidal intended. There is also an additional animated opening sequence and added importance to Helen Mirren’s character. Almost 100 hours of footage were used to give audiences what was intended. How well does it work?

The first red flag is that Vidal's vision does not exist. As soon as director Tinto Brass was brought on, Caligula went through heavy rewrites. Which means the new release is more of the same. Just a whole lot longer. Whether this is a good or bad thing will depend on your initial opinion of the movie. In other words, the latest cut adds nothing.

Just because something is pointless, does that mean it is bad? We once again talk about how even necessary nudity can be superfluous, sex carnivals in ancient Rome, gorgeous set pieces, and over the top performances. Caligula: The Ultimate Cut is something else, but is that something worth watching?

David Lynch is one of our favorite directors. We talk about his recent announcements and look back on some of his films. The Babadook was one of the first horror movies to garner huge internet buzz. It was a “You gotta see this!” that had everyone talking. For its ten year anniversary it will be rereleased in theaters. Will it leave the same impression?

We continue our look at sex and horror with a topic we have never discussed before. Both of this week’s movies claim to deal with sadomasochism. One of them goes too far - but not in the ways you expect. The other does it in a way that makes you wonder why they even mentioned it was a part of the plot.

The Surgeon from 2022 is about a performance artist that gets caught in a S & M love triangle. At least that is what the logline tells you. A better description would be an incomprehensible wanna be psychosexual thriller that throws everything at the audience whether it makes sense or not. Lots of pointless nudity, shocking twists that end up meaning nothing, and characters you will not be sure what to think are just part of one of the worst movies we have ever had on our humble little podcast.

Black Eyed Susan makes much more sense. It is about a man who takes a job test a sex robot whose AI learns through punishment. It is a provocative film that never holds back. It also introduces themes that are important in today’s society whether we want to think about them or not.

The problem is it has good ideas it does nothing with. In a type of story that pretty much requires nudity, when is it too much? How strong of a point can you make when you are literally dehumanizing a character? When is a person so far down on their look you don’t even care to look for them? Black Eyed Susan asks a lot of questions - and many of them are interesting, but do they overcome its glaring faults?

Bioshock is one of the greatest games of all time. It is not just a one off either as it has two impressive sequels. The stories tackle individuality, class, race, and a myriad of themes in a world filled with 1950s art deco and futuristic technology. They are the definition of “must play” video games.

How we overlooked that an adaption is coming to Netflix is beyond us. But we did see the news that the budget has been lowered for it. Will this negatively impact a story filled with awesome powers and robot-like monstrosities? Or is this an opportunity to focus on the amazing story and characters?

In a Violent Nature is one of the most exciting and fun slashers to come out in years. It has been a hit with audiences so it comes as no surprise that a sequel has already been announced. Is it too soon or is this the next big horror franchise?

We do things slightly differently this week as we look at three films. Our first one is a short that recently made its world premiere at the Fantasia Film Festival. It is also our first entry in our look at sex in genre film. Dirty Bad Wrong is a look at the past and possible future of how we look at sex workers. It is also a tense watch with an uncomfortable climax and thought provoking ending.

Before getting hot and heavy, we wanted to dip our toes into sex and horror. We start by entering the modern dating world in The Dead Thing. The plot revolves around a woman whose life is consumed by work, dating apps, and shallow hookups. Until she meets a man who wins her over. But when he ghosts her, it leads to a dangerous obsession.

Los Angeles has been the setting for a myriad of movies over the decades. We talk about how this film is different and how it adds to the plot. The direction also combines noir and eroticism in a stylish mix. And while the story does not reinvent the wheel, it does touch on some powerful themes and one of us thought it had an all but perfect ending.

It is almost a shame how little The Dead Thing does with its characters, however. Blu Hunt does a fine job in the lead role, but she is given little to work with. There is little in the way of development and if you end up caring about her at all it probably will not be in a positive way. The object of her affections does not give the audience anything to work with. Why is any of this happening? And if I do not know why, how can I care?

We step away from sex and close the show with Cuckoo. Intentionally choosing style over substance, Director Tillman Singer crafts an atmospheric tale that is creepy while explaining little. A great performance from Euphoria’s Hunter Shafer pair with Dan Stevens in an over the top role are highlights. But are they enough to make up for a plot that has plenty of questions but no answers?

Before we get to Fantasia we talk about the rumored Spawn movie. There have been reports about this film for literally decades. Is there any reason to be excited this time around? Plus, a remake that has taken surprisingly long to see the light of day. And sharks, folk horror, and more sharks!

We love exploitation films. We have also been known to enter the world of arthouse cinema on our humble little podcast. But what happens when the two worlds collide? Hollywood 90028 is not the only movie to combine the two, but there were not too many that were doing it in 1973.

A main character you will not know what to make of, some tasteful nudity (and some not so much), and long monologues are just the tip of the iceberg. Released during a time when the country was struggling to find a new identity, Hollywood 90028 takes on a number of themes. It is not perfect, but it is one of the most interesting movies we have ever discussed on this show.

The Beast Within is a Fantasia World Premiere that left us torn. Clearly, it is an allegory for something more. The question is, does it deliver on its message? The performances are great and the setting is beautiful. So why did we both have different opinions about it?

We have talked about the marketing of the film for months. Using old school viral marketing and trailers that never showed Nicolas Cage, Longlegs was a creepy throwback that worked. The movie opened in the top five and became Cage’s biggest opening in decades. Should other movies go this route?

The unintended consequences of all the talk is that opinions have been split about Longlegs. Critics may love, but audiences have been lukewarm. We discuss what may have disappointed and how he reacted to the movie. And for all the good it does, there are definitely some things that did not sit well with us.

Cage is always polarizing. He is definitely the internet’s favorite actor, but a lot of that is ironic and based on his over the top performances. Longlegs is another memorable performance he can add to his resume. Some will find it the creepiest of his career, but there are others that may be turned off by it.

Maika Monroe’s much more grounded portrayal is a much more grounded one. It is a star-making turn that shows off her acting range. While most people will leave talking about Cage, it is Monroe that carries Longlegs.

We also talk about the movie’s take on Satanism, how it gave Cannibal Holocaust vibes to one of us, horrors versus thrillers and its chaotic ending.

Horror has plenty of well-known franchises, but there are not many cinematic universes. Except for one very popular one. The Conjuring universe is probably not going away anytime soon, but the final movie in the series has been announced. We also talk about a franchise that was popular when we were younger, went away for a few years, then came back stronger than ever.

The Inheritance sounds cut and dry. A rich family comes together for the first time in years in order to celebrate their father’s 75th birthday. He has brought them together because he knows someone is going to kill him that night and he wants them to stop it from happening. If they fail, they lose all of their inheritance.

It is not long before things go in a completely different direction. What initially sounds like a straightforward mystery becomes a haunted house movie with twists and turns. Great visuals and a paranoid atmosphere make this one of the most pleasantly surprising movies of the year.

On the other end of the spectrum is The Mandela Effect Phenomenon. It sounds interesting enough. A look at the possible causes and what it means for the future of humanity. But from the jump, it is clear that something is very wrong about this documentary.

Bad interview subjects who do not seem to know what they are talking about, misleading videos, and contradicting information littered the film. It aimlessly wanders until it gets to the actual point. You need to read the Bible. Oh boy.

When we discussed an Emmanuelle movie earlier this year, we had no idea there was another one coming. And this one with a top flight notch cast. We also discuss Inside Out 2 crossing the $1 billion dollar mark at the box office and what it says about how we look at flops today. Though it probably will not make as much money, we are still excited about the upcoming Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and its upcoming world premiere.

We all already know the country has an awful choice to make. When your choice is senile old white man or crazy old man is their a point in even making one? The answer is yes. Re-Elected from 2020 is a horror movie that knows exactly what it is. A goofy, kind of dumb, but all around fun watch that is not supposed to be taken seriously.

You would figure that a movie from this era involving dead presidents would have all sorts of social commentary. Re-Elected does not have one thing to say about what is going on in today's world and is better for it. For starters, this is not that type of movie. It's not that horror cannot say anything relevant; it has always been light years ahead of other genres when it comes to that. It is more about some films being all about just turning off your brain and enjoying what you see at the most visceral level.

Cold Blows the Wind is an awesomely named indie horror movie that constantly punches above its weight. It is a microbudget affair that is so good that it allows anyone watching to focus on the plot and characters instead of the value of the production. Filled with great performances and writing, even some noticeable missteps do not take away from the enjoyment.

We also talk about what is appropriate nudity. For years now, we have talked about how today's cinema seems to fear be sexy, erotic, or just plain naked. The rub is, when done right, nudity can add to a film, even when it an argument can be made that it was not completely necessary. But necessary and appropriate are two entirely different things.

It is not often that we discuss Hallmark movies. But when it involves the Kansas City Chiefs, how can we avoid it? We also talk about the trailer for the upcoming remake of Nosferatu by Robert Eggers and a M3GAN spinoff with a really neat premise. We also discuss the importance of an AI girlfriend.

Whenever we review a movie for our humble little podcast we inevitably ask ourselves, “Who is this movie for?” Never has the answer been harder than with The Conqueror: Hollywood Fallout. There is definitely something here for those who liked to hear stories about trouble productions, but overall, this is not that kind of movie.

The film has a much darker story to tell. Along with the multiple cases of cancer among the cast and crew, it also goes into how the production affected the surrounding towns. A hard hitting watch, this is one of those releases that seems like it is for one audience that is accessible to anyone.

Then there is The Omicron Killer which is not for anyone. This is bad in more ways than we can adequately describe. Awful comedy, a confusing plot, and nude scenes that even we find pointless, the film seems to go out of its way to alienate audiences. And not in the cute Troma way that ends up being charming.

Since Jordan Peele’s next movie is not scheduled to release until 2026, there is not much to talk about. It does lead into a conversation about new ideas in Hollywood, however. We also talk about the awesome marketing behind Longlegs.

Sometimes, there is too much importance placed on being wholly original. We get so caught up in seeing something completely different that we forget that bringing a new perspective to an old idea can be just as exciting. The Weekend is a great example. It is your basic in-law horror. But the focus on characters and pacing as opposed to jump scares gives it a different feel.

Which isn’t to say that it is all good. There are some very noticeable flaws in it. This is true of any horror movie, especially one with a premise as ridiculous as The Weekend. But there are some things that even the most die hard genre fans will be unable to accept. Thankfully, there is one amazingly trashy character that brings a lot of fun to the very somber story. But is it enough?

This year has been a little different for us. We have spent more time focusing on older films than in any previous year. During our look back at the first part of 2024, we ignored those movies. There is still a lot to work with and talk about, however. From movies comprised entirely of a language invented for it to a film aimed to take down the horror community, we discuss the movies that impressed us and made us angry. And how could we not talk about the strangest movie we have ever reviewed for our humble little podcast?

Has there ever been a more appropriately titled movie than 28 Years Later? We talk about the latest casting news for a sequel that seems like it has been decades in the making. It is the 35th anniversary of HBO’s Tales From the Crypt. Now’s the perfect time to rewatch your favorite episodes. All you need is to do is dust off those old DVDs…

Tribeca has always offered some of the best horror movies of the year. This year’s slate includes the world premiere of an old school slasher with a modern take. One of us feels that #AMFAD: All My Friends Are Dead breathes new life into the sub-genre. But why weren’t both of us as impressed?

#AMFAD is a high energy film that sometimes does more than it has to, but there is a lot to like. We talk about the evolution of the Final Girl, funny deaths, and today's fear of sexy scenes. Is it the start of a new franchise or just something for Jojo Siwa to add to her resume?

It would not be hard to believe that when John Carpenter shot Vampires, he did not care what happened since his legacy was secured long ago. Little did he know that the movie would be another strong addition to his already impressive filmography. It has some very noticeable flaws, but in a year that included a fifth Children of the Corn movie, Gus Van Sant’s Psycho, and a movie written by and starring Twisted Sister’s Dee Snider, John Carpenter's Vampires is easily one of the best horror releases of 1998.

The treatment of Sherly Lee is one of the worst ever seen, but is the entire film misogynistic? (Hint: The only women with speaking lines are hookers.) Daniel Baldwin chews up the scenery decades before his brother made sure the Baldwin name would live in New Mexico infamy. But the absolute star is James Woods.

Vampires oozes machismo - you can smell the testosterone through your television set. Woods takes things to a whole new level of manliness. Fans of Curb Your Enthusiasm and improv work will love Woods’s performances as the awesomely named Jack Crow. A minimum of 91% of his lines are improvised leading to gems like him asking a priest if he got an erection while Crow was kicking his ass. It is an amazing piece of work that absolutely needs to be seen to be appreciated.

We were not the only ones who loved Late Night With the Devil. It has set box office records for all independent film and has been critically praised. We talk about what its immediate future holds. Plus, David Lynch made his big announcement and we called it. (Spoiler alert: it's not the second GTA VI trailer.)

You can pinpoint the exact moment What Keeps You Alive peaks. Everything up to the moment is tension filled and exciting. The film is beautifully shot and presents an interesting set of characters. It is familiar, but still does its own thing. Regrettably, it falls right off a cliff soon after.

Things go on for too long, the writing gives away way too much, and the ending is unsatisfying. It is a classic case of going out with a whimper instead of a bang. And it ruins all the good will that had been built up over the course of the previous hour plus. Tack on the strange addition of 1990s Australian rock band Silverchair, and you have a head scratching finale.

We were really looking forward to The Curse II: The Bite. It is B-horror, stars scream queen Jill Schoelen, and is part of a franchise. The fact that it was filmed and takes place in Las Cruces only added to our anticipation. Little did we know the movie would also have Jaime Farr of MAS*H fame in one of the most ridiculously awesome subplots ever, some unironically awesome special effects, and a look at late 80s trucker culture.

David Lynch recently made an announcement, and in typical Lynchian fashion, nothing is as simple as it seems. One thing is for certain: it will be a treat for our eyes and ears. We also talk about one of the strangest musicals we have ever heard of. If you like anime and giant naked men, this may be the news you have been waiting for.

When you are going to review a Roger Corman movie, it is hard to decide what to do. There are just so many of them. And his resume is so varied that even the most cursory look involves diving into a deep rabbit hole. So we decided to go with one that starred Jack Nicholson, Boris Karloff, and Dick Miller.

Little did we know there was more to The Terror than just a bunch of famous names.

After six directors, nine months, and days of filming without an actual script, the movie hit theaters. Unsurprisingly, it is not very good, but how well did its strong cast fare? Corman wanted his own take on Edgar Allen Poe, which he did manage to pull off, but the way he did it will surprise you (or not if you know anything about Corman’s methods). Do modern eyes have a different take on The Terror?

Over the course of five years and almost three hundred episodes, we have covered all sorts of topics. Most recently, we had Bruceploitation Month, but we have also done Black horror, LGBTQ horror, and Trucksploitation. It is so difficult that it took one of our loyal listeners to point out we had never covered movies made in the area we grew up.

We begin Home is Where the DIE! Is month with a movie that has been on our radar. While 1972’s Gargoyles was not what we specifically had in mind, we have been wanting to cover a made to TV genre movie for a long time. Lucky for us, we were able to find one that was filmed in Carlsbad Caverns and Laredo.

With special effects done by the Academy Award winning Stan Winston (who also won a Primetime Emmy for his work here), Bernie Casey playing a winged gargoyle who rides a horse, and plenty of halter tops, the film does everything it can to pull in eyeballs. Despite the strange use of slow motion, the plot moves quickly. Is it an overlooked treasure of southwest cinema or is it best left in the 70s?

It is almost impossible to quantify what Roger Corman has done for horror. He pretty much invented B horror, launched the careers of some of the most talented directors of all time, and is behind some of the most iconic genre films of all time. His influence can be seen in the video box art that older fans pine about and in podcasts like our own. He is a true icon.

Typecasting is an interesting part of Hollywood. Some like scream queens and rom-com hunks lean into it. Others try to break out of the box others try to put them in. Think all of the comedic actors who have tried their hands at serious roles or child actors who appeared in more risque fare. It is always a shame to see an actor who obviously has a range of talents regulated to the same types of roles.

But what if an actor typecasts themselves?

Faceless After Dark stars Terrifer’s Jenna Kanell as an actor whose breakout role was in a movie about a killer clown. The synopsis is a little misleading (when she is held hostage by a fan dressed as said clown, she must do whatever she can to survive) as it is more of a revenge story than the logline implies. And that is just the first confusing thing.

The lead character is completely unlikable, the direction is headache inducing, and motivations are nonsensical. Are we supposed to root for Bowie Davidson (Kanell)? Why does she hate her fans so much? Is jealousy truly the root of all evil. Faceless After Dark has something to say, and it touches on real issues like toxic fandom and gender, but it is all done in a way that is confusing and just plain insulting. This movie was absolutely directed towards Terrifer fans and they are not going to like what it has to say.

Bruceploitation Month ends with the most famous Bruce Lee imitator of all. He was also the person who brought an end to the genre. Initially, Jackie Chan was supposed to continue in the footsteps of Dragon Lee, Bruce Li, Bruce Lea, and so many others. He did not want that and proceeded to carve out his own name. But not before he gave us 1976’s New Fist of Fury.

Xenophobia, confounding death scenes, a complete downer of an ending and, of course, a completely random Bruce Lee reference are all part of the film. It is a chance to see Jackie Chan very early in his career and has a powerful story to boot. At least, it seems powerful. Since the subtitles do not translate everything, we are left to assume that much of what is happening is very poignant and meaningful. The final shot certainly left us feeling something; too bad none of it was good.

Blade Runner is one of the most revered science fiction films of all time. It has spawned video games, books, a sequel, and an upcoming Prime series. People LOVE the movie. We talk about a major casting decision for the show and how the original movie is overrated.

The Strangers is one of the best home invasion movies of all time. Surprisingly, it did not lead to a larger franchise. As a matter of fact, there will be more installments this year than there have been in the previous decade and a half. That includes a potential four and half hour long cut of all three movies that will be coming out this year. Some horror is all about making audiences feel uncomfortable, but that may be a little too much.

Haunted house movies is one of the most popular sub-genres in horror and will will never go away. People love to hear stories about homes with violent pasts. This sub-genre has gone beyond just scaring people as more comedy horror movies may be about haunted houses than any other subject.

For Sale has a lot going for it. Its use of effects proves there is more that the practical vs CGI argument does not always matter. Essentially, it does more with less. It also has two great leads that have tremendous chemistry. There is an overall charm to the entire film.

Regrettably, it does not manage to close the deal. There are some genuinely funny moments and some really creepy ones, but the whole thing never settles on a tone. For Sale also never recovers from a major decision leading into the third act. Things grind to a halt leading to an ending that is more confusing than anything else.

As we head into the home stretch of Bruceploitation Month, we finally get to Dragon Lee. A few shows back, Blake talked about how much he was looking forward to covering the actor. Kung Fu Fever is a revelation and a disappointment. Dragon Lee is even more awesome than either of us could have imagined, but the print is of very poor quality.

Blake also presents a theory that is as zany as any of the films we have covered. It may be too far out there for some listeners to accept, but after watching Kung Fu Fever, some listeners may not think it is so ridiculous. One thing everyone will agree on; this is one of the most tasteless Bruceploitation movies ever made.

A few weeks back we discussed unfilmable books. One that is often brought up is Cormac McCarthy’s Blood Meridian. Reportedly, another adaptation is in the works. There is a reason that the many attempts to adapt it have fallen apart, however.

As the name implies, Southern Gothic is a subgenre that is heavily influenced by elements of the American south. Anne Rice and A Streetcar Named Desire are two of the most well known examples. This week we look at one author’s struggle to complete her novel.

Flannery O’Connor wrote a number of stories that used elements of her upbringing. Starring Maya Hawke and directed by her father Ethan, Wildcat examines how her life and works connected. Maya’s performance is fantastic and includes some real standout moments. That being said, there were some surprising missteps.

Since the birth of the internet people have asked serious questions. Who would win in a fight between Goku and the Hulk? Could Lancelot best Luke Skywalker in a duel? A/S/L? One of the things young internet denizens argued about was who would win in a one-on-one battle between Bruce Lee and Superman.

As it turns out, a 1975 movie dared to give this match to audiences. It is certainly a risk. Both are incredibly popular, meaning it was going to be impossible to not anger some viewers. Plus, how could any film possibly live up to what would certainly be sky high expectations? Worse yet, what if it is a bait and switch?

Bruce Lee vs Superman (or Bruce Lee Against the Supermen or Superdragon vs Superman) is far from a perfect movie - or even a good one - but it presents the fight it advertises. There is more than just the slugfest between the two iconic heroes, however. Green Hornet, Kato, and possibly the wildest rickshaw scene in the history of cinema all get involved. It may not be the best Bruceploitation movie, but it is hard to believe there is anything zanier.

We have devoted plenty of time on our humble little podcast singing the praises of The Blair Witch Project over the years. But what do we have to say now that the original cast has made some pretty heavy demands? We also talk about a video game adaptation taking place in El Paso and why the opinions of video game fans may be the most reliable.

All You Need is Death is a great title for a comedy horror. Have some fun musical numbers and an ending involving a bad looking George Harrison lookalike and you got yourself a winner. If the plot is a serious one involving Irish folklore and odd secret organizations, it is one of the worst titles ever.

A bad title does not take away from a good film, however. Especially when that film owes a big debt to David Lynch's creepiest tendencies. That being said, Lynch is definitely not for everyone. And so goes, All You Need is Death, a movie that does so much right but also cannot seem to help but get in its own way.

Bruceploitation Month continues with Fists of Bruce Lee. This episode we tried to do something different and review a movie with a plot. Sure, it is all just filler to take up space between the awesome fight scenes, but there is an actual story being told. After covering last week's travesty, it is nice to know that there are some movies that were trying to do more than just cash in on Lee's name.

A few weeks ago we talked about The First Omen and how it needed to make cuts in order to avoid an NC-17 rating. Blake brought up an interesting point. What if the movie was horrible and was relying on being over the top to garner word of mouth? And cinema history has shown that an entire film being gross just for the sake of it is not usually a good thing.

The first movie we review this week is The Coffee Table. Quotes from critics talking about how uncomfortable it will make audiences feel uncomfortable. The director has stated he wanted to make a “cruel” film. And there it definitely succeeds with both. But does that make it good? It is one thing to make people watching a feel rethink their positions on things; it is something else entirely when the goal is to just to make people feel ugly.

It can be argued that Bruce Lee Fights Back from the Grave is just as disgusting, though for completely different reasons. Released just three years after the death of Bruce Lee, the U.S distributors added a tasteless opening and title that have nothing to do with the actual plot. This was simply about capitalizing on someone’s death in the most crass way possible. The fact it stars Bruce K. Lea may be the most sensitive part of it all.

The actual movie has nothing to do with Lee or anything supernatural. It is a straight up action movie about a man trying to find his missing brother. It is filled with the wackiness that is expected of a martial arts movie from the 1970s. Unsurprisingly, it does not live up to anything done by Bruce Lee. The question is, should you spend an hour and a half of your life with it?

Decades ago, Anne Rice showed us that placing vampires in the southern United States usually leads to great storytelling. While it is all rumors, there may be a new horror movie using the same formula. With names like Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan attached it sounds interesting.

Killer clowns have been a thing for a very long time. You would figure that two guys who love horror movies would dig. At the very least, they would have seen the Terrifier movies. As it turns out, one of us has not seen either of them (unless you count the anthology shown on The Last Drive-In). The other saw the first one and did not really like it.

Believe it or not, neither of us are excited about the next installment. Does the Christmas theme at least have us intrigued? What is Art the Clown? Is it a bad thing when the only way to describe a horror movie is by its kills? We may not care for the franchise, but we have some things to say about it.

There was a time when sci-fi horror movies would pack drive-throughs around the country. Sting sounds like a throwback to that time. The story is about a young girl that finds a tiny space spider. As it grows in size, its appetite grows with it. What’s a pre-teen girl to do?

Is it possible for one character to ruin an otherwise fun little horror movie? What if everyone else is quirky and fun? There is a lot of good to say about Sting, but the stuff that is bad really stands out. Still, there is excellent production and some great scare shots.

It is impossible to overstate the impact of Bruce Lee. We have fond memories of him from when we were kids. Playing with nunchucks, watching Game of Death over and over, and even as stated in this week’s feature presentation Enter the Clones of Bruce, not believing he was a real person.

The documentary about Bruceploitation is a fantastic one that focuses on one of the strangest sub-genres of film that exists. In between stories of stand-ins from around the world and directors willing to sink to unbelievable lows is a story about a man that was admired by the entire world. Enter the Clones is a fantastic look at guerilla filmmaking that also remembers an absolute legend.

We have franchises on our minds this week. We did not think The Pope's Exorcist was a big hit. It underperformed at the box office and any time we heard about the Russel Crowe movie, it was just about how awful it was. Apparently, it has gathered a cult following. How big of a fanbase? Would you believe a trilogy? We also talk about the new Matrix movie and the importance of knowing when to quit.

Scarlett Johansson is one of the biggest movie stars in the world. Big as in second box office grossing actor in the history of movies. She has acted in a number of different genres and is known the world over. But even she has starred in some films that did not set the box office on fire.

Released in 2013, Under the Skin is one of those that did not do as well. As in, it failed to recoup its $13 million (!) budget. We talk about the guerilla filmmaking, Johansson's amazing performance, and why audiences will have trouble getting into it. Is this the best work on an impressive resume?

It seems like we are seeing a Lovecraft renaissance. The horror author has been a big influence for many, but his views have left him person non grata for a long time. But every week seems to bring us a new work inspired by him. (To be fair, Lovecraftian themes and ideas have never gone away.)

What is especially fun about this latest way of Lovecraftian horror is its willingness to try new themes. Take 2022's Glorious. The Shudder original takes many familiar themes and puts them in a road stop restroom and makes a glory hole central to the plot. Does it work? And what about that wild twist?

It is not often that we cover box office blockbusters. There is the occasional special edition, but most of the films we cover tend to fly under the mainstream radar. Late Night with the Devil does not change that, but it has done some interesting business. But as is par for the course nowadays, it comes with a bit of controversy.

We love hearing about movies that have taken things too far. The First Omen had already hooked up thanks to its awesome trailer. It was recently revealed that it was almost rated NC-17 - and not for the reasons you might think. This certainly sounds exciting at first, but are there ulterior motives behind this revelation?

There are some names that are common throughout horror. There are plenty of movies called “The Curse” or have “Revelations” in their title. And while you wouldn’t think there would be two movies called Easter Bunny Massacre, it should not be that shocking. The fact that they are both about friends who share a dark secret having a reunion before being picked off by a killer dressed in an Easter bunny outfit is certainly strange.

Obviously, it takes elements from I Know What You Did Last Summer, so it should come as no surprise that it borrows liberally from Scream. But when do you cross the line between homage and rip-off? (Here’s a hint; taking scenes word for word and shot for shot is a little much.) Easter Bunny Massacre: The Bloody Trail sounded like dumb fun, but just ended up being dumb.

There was no way that Easter Bloody Easter was not going to provide some sort of entertainment. Its story involving a killer jackalope and an army of killer bunny rabbits was just too silly. And the climax provided the kind of bonkers excitement that we knew we were going to get.

Regrettably, that was the only part of the film that lived up to its promise. How do you get the tone wrong in a ridiculous comedy horror? Include a toxic relationship and alcoholism for starters. And that is just the start of many problems in Easter Bloody Easter? Were the genuinely funny moments enough to overcome its many flaws? And will we ever do another Easter episode again?

Since its 1988 release Beetlejuice has been a fan favorite. The story mixes outrageous moments of humor and horror while the characters are some of the most memorable in film. We knew there was no way to avoid it, but there was no need for a sequel.

And yet decades later we are presented with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. As with any remake, it was hard not to greet the news with trepidation. The original was such a big part of our childhoods we did not want to see it sullied in any way. That being said, the recently released first look photos do look promising - even if it is hard to not be a little disappointed.

Another big part of our younger years was Joe Bob Briggs. MonsterVision introduced us to different types of horror. He was funny, informative and spoke directly to his fans. This week we are very happy to have an interview with Joe Bob.

The Loveland Frogman may not be as widely known as other cryptids, but the creature is popular enough to have been named the city mascot of his hometown. A documentary about it would be interesting, but a fictional movie would not be the worst idea. Especially if it is found footage.

Frogman goes the route of The Blair Witch Project. It is set in the woods and involves a trio of friends, with one of them on an obsessive hunt to find the truth. It is also slow, meandering, and lacks any layered characters. In other words, it is a found footage movie.

The question becomes does it have enough to overcome these faults? For much of the time, the answer is a hard no. But when Frogman is at its best, it is proof of just how awesome the genre can be. It may not be enough to make it all worth watching, but not many movies have a frog creature wielding a magic wand.

Late Night with the Devil is already one of the best reviewed horror movies of 2024. Of course what critics think and what audiences feel can be two drastically different things. So, what did two guys who just watch movies think?

For starters, it has something that is rarely seen in these types of films; there is actual character development. We discuss how Late Night with the Devil manages to remain grounded despite the outrageous premise. We also talk about one of the creepiest performances we have seen this year.

Sure, the Academy Awards are a joke. But they are usually good for something. No, it was not an opportunity to make a real social statement. And who cares about Donald Trump’s nonsense? The Satanic ritual smack dab in the middle of the ceremony, however…

It has been a tough year for the Scream franchise. When everything hit the fan a few weeks ago, it looked like there was nothing that could save the fan favorite series. We thought there was one thing that could turn people’s opinions around, but we also thought there was one hope to make things better. Of course, that was never gonna happen. Until it did.

True crime documentaries are everywhere, which would be fine if they were not all so cookie cutter. The ones that have stood out recently are not the ones with the most gruesome or obscure cases. It is the docs that tackle the strange and offbeat cases that tend to be the most interesting.

Dickweed spoke to us for these exact reasons. Kidnapping, prison breaks, torture, and an amputated penis are all part of its twisted tale. The opening is fantastic and does a great job of drawing in its audience.

So, where did it go wrong? Was it the on the nose title which may be the laziest we have ever come across? Or was how it was able to take an exciting story and completely suck any fun out of it? Maybe it is the strange decision to ignore the most interesting parts of the story and spend way too much time talking to one of the most insufferable interview subjects ever? Whatever the case, Dickweed is incredibly disappointing.

Dead Mail is weird. (What may be stranger is that one of us was actually familiar with one of the strangest parts of the film.) The plot sounds straightforward enough. A dead letter investigator is presented with a bloody note requesting help. His investigation leads to a dangerous situation that may be too much for him to handle.

In that simple premise, FILMMAKER constructs a tale of friendship, betrayal, and synthesizers that will keep anyone watching on their toes. From the unusual structure of the plot to its emphasis on music, we try to break it all down. Is Dead Mail too much or is it able to find the right mix of avant garde filmmaking and sheer horror?

There have been plenty of attempts to adapt Dune, but none seemed to have captured the magic of the source material. Is Frank Herbert’s classic unfilmable? Whether you are a series expert or are just watching the new films in a vacuum, there are some noticeable flaws in the movie.

Characters are a big part of the movie, and there is one who stands out from the rest. We talk about the amazing performances, the baffling decisions, and how Dune: Part II’s most important character is done a disservice. We also talk about how it managed to pack the cast with big name stars without making any seem underused - kinda.

Dune: Part II also shows how it is possible to have an epic movie without any epic moments. Anyone who watched Spider-Man turn to dust will never forget that moment. Nothing remotely close ever happens in Part II, though it tries extremely hard.

We may give our opinions on a few movies each week, but it is rare that we go back and remind the audience that they have to go out and watch something. Lovely, Dark, and Deep is the rare exception. We have absolutely gushed about it since we first saw it last year and are glad to see it has finally been released in theaters. There are a lot of options on what to spend your theater bucks on, but this is an absolute must-see.

True Detective: Night Country was over before it began and we have a lot to talk about. We also discuss just how close the world came to getting a Truth or Dare 2 (not the Madonna version). But the strangest news of the week just may have been who has been attached the the Bee Gees biopic.

Night of the Cobra Woman is a strange movie. The story of a woman who is bit by a cobra who apparently has to sleep with men to remain young never really materializes. A person's first appearance sees assault then kill a woman while his last scene is him saving the day. People realize their significant others are in danger and just leave. Nothing makes sense and it looks like everyone involved had no idea what they were doing. At least the make up effects were good.

Stopmotion is the exact opposite. The story of a talented artist who becomes obsessed with their work is not new to horror. But the performances, effects, and storytelling in the film are fantastic. Though this is live action, it also includes some great animated moments. The horror is expertly done and there is something for all genre fans to enjoy.

When over 100 million people watch something, there is no way we can avoid talking about it. We discuss our favorite trailers from this year's Super Bowl. And yes we chose to talk about Knuckles instead of Wicked. And was there a commercial for Scientology during the big game or are people just messing with us?

Bram Stoker is a horror icon, but not in the same way as other creators like Stephen King or John Carpenter. Stoker is known for Dracula and nothing else. It is the rare case where the work has completely overshadowed the author. Still, "Bram Stoker's Dracula' still carries a lot of weight to many more than just horror audiences.

But when you ask people to name any of Stoker's other works, the question will probably be met with a blank stare. in 1988, director Ken Russell gifted the world with his take on The Lair of the White Worm. Sexy, sensual, frightening, and an assault on the senses, the film is an underrated gem that we could not say enough good things about as hard as we tried.

After school specials went away a long time ago, but those who are old enough, remember them fondly. Though it was a Lifetime movie, 1996's No One Would Tell definitely fits in the category. Its story of a high school girl being abused by her boyfriend is a powerful one that remained with anyone who saw it.

But how well does it work in 2024? Putting aside how strange it is to see Fred Savage and Candance Cameron star in a movie about respecting women, it is a very effective movie. There are some poor writing decisions that are impossible to ignore, but the tension, pacing, and overall tone make for an impactful watch.

It seems like cult movies are a thing of the past. Sure, there are ones that find a big following on streaming networks, but it is not the same as the little films with the outrageous box art that was always rented out. They were the movies whose titles would spring up constantly even though they never played at a theater. Those day are definitely long gone, but one indie film is making noise in the United Kingdom.

We have talked a lot about the inglorious fall of the Alien franchise. We have also discussed how Fede Alvarez constantly disappoints us. Now that the two are together, is there any hope for either?

Gods of the Deep does not mess around. This means there is no character development and little in the story way of plot. But there is lots of Lovecraft. And the special effects are some of the best to be found in indie cinema. It is a brave decision to forgo pretty much everything that is supposed to make a movie worth watching. Does Gods of the Deep pull it off?

Even braver is writing a movie with a made up language and setting it 45,000 years ago. Out of Darkness does just that and gives it a horror twist. We talk about the surprising depth, how scary it managed to be, and whether it was still too pretentious.

There are not enough haunted attractions. There are haunts set up all over the country during October. And most cities have some type of ghost tour, but there are very few year round places that are devoted to horror. Blumhouse is doing something to fill that void. But can the studio responsible for The Exorcist: Believer and Truth or Dare really give horror audiences what they want?

There are so many zombie movies to choose from that even the good ones tend to be forgotten. 28 Days Later is one of the strongest entries in the genre and its sequel is not too bad. For years there has been talk of a third entry. We talk about the latest news concerning the movie and whether we want to see it.

There have been occasional resurgences, but teen slashers saw their greatest output during the 80s. The genre became so popular that it was even able to break into the mainstream. The decade also saw a number of knock offs that ended up becoming cult classics and fan favorites.

Maybe we are too old for Departing Seniors. A familiar premise with a modern perspective, the film had us wondering what today’s youth are really like. We are not sure if all of today’s high school students are pieces of crap or if it is just a case of poor writing? Where do you draw the line between bravery and cowardice?

One thing is for certain, the 2024 film is a great entry point for younger audiences looking to try out teen slashers. It does not have the cringier elements found in older movies while dealing with topical issues. It is also well acted and has a fun little story. There are some flaws along the way, but it is definitely worth checking out. If you ever wanted to see what would happen when Karate Kid III and Saved by the Bell met, then this is the show for you.

We began the year by talking about the movies we liked the least and most from 2023. Unsurprisingly, we had little crossover with the Academy Awards but the Razzies did have some of our picks, but is that a good thing?

Oppenheimer was one of the biggest movies of the year. So why did it take so long to get a Japanese release date? The answer might surprise you. We also talk about the Chinese box office and how it can affect our show in the future.

The Death Tour is probably not about what you think. Screening at the Slamdance Film Festival, the documentary is about a pro wrestling tour that takes place in the Northern Territories. When it comes to wrestling, it is fairly simple to deliver a compelling product. All it takes are engaging stories and a storyline.

This film definitely has interesting personalities. It has the normal tales of self-doubt and redemption found in these types of documentaries, but it also brings different stories and themes that would set it apart. Regrettably, The Death Tour makes decisions that would make it a difficult watch for even fans of the sport.

Realm of Satan is already getting a lot of flack. Made in collaboration with members of the Church of Satan, the documentary is not an exploration of the inner workings of the organization. Instead, it is an experimental film that seems to be about people. It is certainly not for everyone.

Due to its structure, it managed to be both entertaining and plodding. The moments that were the stereotypical view of what a Satanist is impressed us the least while the scenes that were more grounded were way more interesting. Shocking and silly, Realm of Satan is one of the most unique looks at Satanism you will ever see.

Dune: Part 2 is slated to be one of the biggest releases of this year. What better way to commemorate its release than to revisit David Lynch’s version of the Frank Herbert classic? Forty years after its controversial initial release, Lynch’s Dune will see a limited release in theaters.

Is there anything more that we need to say about The Exorcist: Believer? We have made it clear since watching it that we absolutely detested the sequel to one of the most important horror movies of all time. The latest news of the project - and its planned future - have us both thinking about the future and past.

When we first discussed the trailer for Netflix’s A Vampire in the Family, we were pleasantly surprised. It looked like good old fashioned goofy fun. Little did we know that we would be introduced to what has to be one of Brazil’s most cherished comedic treasures.

We have covered a lot of strange films on our humble little podcast. None have straight up confused us like 2024’s Sunrise. The story somehow becomes more confusing if you pay more attention to it. The fact that it is a vampire movie without an actual vampire is strange enough, but add flashbacks that make no sense, characters that do things without reason, and a backstory that brings nothing, the film left us speechless.

Before we gush about 2023, we talk about one of the most underrated remakes of all time. Largely ignored at the time of its 1988 release, The Blob is an excellent remake of a sci-fi classic. With the news that David Bruckner is attached to the next iteration of the film, we talk about what excites us - and why Bruckner has his work cut out for him.

A lot of big news came out of Hollywood this past year. From strikes to a billion dollar phenomenon, the movies were constantly in the news. So much so that many films were overshadowed by it all. That being said, it was a great year for genre cinema. From January all the way through December, we kept seeing awesome movies.

But which ones did we like best? Naturally, there is horror talk, including two of the biggest releases (at least for horror fans) of the year. But we also talk about lost sub-genres, the direction true crime can take, and The Booty Boys. It is a eclectic episode this week.

Before we get down to business, we talk some movie news. Mickey Mouse has entered the public domain - sorta - and on cue a pair of horror movies and video game were announced. When the same thing happened with Winnie the Pooh, people were amused. This announcement has been met with widespread anger and we cannot figure out why.

The news of a new horror prequel arriving in 2024 is no big surprise. Still, it is hard not to get excited after seeing the trailer for The First Omen. Great music and the use of reverse footage looks fantastic. The Omen is an excellent movie that often gets overlooked, and we are looking forward to seeing what the new movie will do.

An episode like this one requires a disclaimer. This week’s show is all about our least favorite movies of 2023, and while we may use the word “worst” interchangeably, it is not our intent to insult that work that was done by the cast or crew of any of these films. Each one is discussed in a vacuum and we understand that everyone involved has and can do great work.

That being said, these movies sucked.

From big budget mainstream theater releases to smaller indie films making their festival run, we talk about the movies that we enjoyed the least. It is a varied list that sees us talk about Dracula, true crime, and one of the greatest horror movies of all time. And for the first time ever, we drastically disagree about one of the worst picks.

It has been a tumultuous few weeks for Scream VII. After losing its two leads, the movie was rocked with the news that its director had quit. There will still be a future for the popular franchise, but should there be? American television is a strange thing. Shows either go on for too long or are canceled before their time. It is rare to see a series come to a satisfactory end. But it looks like that is exactly what is going to happen with What We Do In the Shadows.

When we spoke about the trailer for Angel Baby a few weeks ago, we both agreed it looked like generic fun. Well, we were half right. Filled with familiar tropes, the film is perfect for Escape to the Woods subgenre. It is its attempt to do something different where things fall apart. Filled with interesting ideas but little else, it ends up being a huge disappointment.

We love found footage movies. Even the flaws that come with them are easy to look over - even if they can be annoying. The origins of the genre are murky. While there is no doubting The Blair Witch Project brought it to the mainstream, it certainly was not the first. What people choose to count as found footage is where the confusion comes in.

One thing there is no debating is that Blackwood Evil is the first found footage movie to attempt to capitalize on the success of Blair Witch. (Well, if nothing else, it is one of the first.) There is a reason most people have not heard of it. The production is awful; some scenes cannot be seen, while others are impossible to hear. The acting is atrocious and there is not a hint of anything scary until over an hour has passed.

So, why did we like it so much? This is definitely a movie you have to grade on a curve. It was released over two decades ago when there was not much of a template to follow. The characters may be the most realistic ever seen in found footage and the lack of polish actually works to its benefit. It would not be accurate to say that Blackwood Evil is a good movie, but it is one that should be seen.

There is a surprising amount of genre film news this week. Godzilla Minus One has done well among critics and audiences. This has led to a re-release that sounds pretty cool. For the time being, it is only in Japan, but we are sure it will come to America. We also talk two upcoming sequels. One has us excited; the other? Not so much.

We have been planning on talking about Mister Organ for weeks now. The documentary sounds innocent enough. An investigative reporter finds out about a strange parking scam and decides to follow up. It ends up being a mistake that changes his life for the worse.

The titular character is one of the most terrifying people ever captured on film. He is manipulative, calculating, and always seems to be one step ahead of everyone. We talk about how unremarkable he seems to be (this adds to how frightening he is) and how Mister Organ uses interviews and lots of conversations to showcase how terrifying he is. This includes an epic rant from Blake.

We close out our holiday horror shows with the world’s only zombie apocalypse musical. When Anna and the Apocalypse was released six years ago, it seemed destined to be a Yuletide regular. So why did it fail to even reach cult status?

The simple answer is that it is not that good. The idea is creative and the setting is perfect for what the creators had in mind. Unfortunately, the mix of comedy and high drama never effectively come together. The songs are decent, but derail the more serious aspects. The more horrific scenes take away all the fun. Anna and the Apocalypse is a mess.

It has been a while since we last talked about video games, but some announcements at The Game Awards sparked our interest. (At least on the show.) We also speak about Smile 2 and its imminent release. Plus, how the change from Ryan Gosling to Christopher Abbott in Wolf Man may actually be a good thing.

Whether the original French or the Italian spin offs, the  Emanuelle franchise holds a special place in the memories of a certain age group. Short on plot, but highly sexual, the films eased the transition into young adulthood. Most would be hard pressed to remember what they were actually about, but they still managed to leave an impression.

Emanuelle’s Revenge is the latest installment and, unsurprisingly,  it has its share of sexy moments. In what will be a surprise to many, the story takes precedence. Highlighting it all are some strong performances, with Beatrice Schiaffino stealing just about every scene she is in at the titular and titillating lead. But do all the pros outweigh the cons?

This week’s feature presentation is the latest feature from Jenn Wexler. The Sacrifice Game is a holiday horror movie that could have been something special. There are great performances, strong characters, and a fun premise. If only the ending were a little stronger…

Hollywood was crippled by strikes earlier this year. This led to a number of delays and changes including Dune: Part II. Thankfully, some great character posters were released. We also talk about one of the least talked about movies from one of our favorite actors. Plus, a look at the potentially great genre offerings coming at the end of the first week of December.

A Creature Was Stirring sounds like it is going to be a goofy holiday horror movie. A mother carefully takes care of her daughter who is suffering from a mysterious sickness. When two burglars great into her home, she is forced to confront her checkered past. Along the way, there is a unique creature, some well done Christmas vibes, and a pretty creepy story.

It's ending completely through us for a loop. It all but ruins every bit of goodwill that has been built by introducing a plot twist that makes little sense in the context of the story. We try to make sense of it and disagree over what it means for the movie as a whole. It also leads to the requisite conversation about whether Die Hard is a Christmas movie. (Spoiler alert: it isn't.)

It's a Wonderful Knife is a title that seems to trap a movie into being little more than a spoof. While there are some allusions to the Frank Capra classic, the 2023 film brings some fun new elements. There are great characters, a fantastic villain, and well paced story that does not waste any time. It is an overall great addition to anyone's holiday horror catalog.

Last week came some stunning news that seems to have crippled the Scream franchise - at least for the time being. What does the future hold for one of horror’s most iconic series? Perhaps even more stunning has been the success of Blumhouse Five Nights at Freddy’s. Against the odds, it has become the studio’s highest grossest movie of all time. We also talk about the Nosferatu adaptation from Robert Eggers. 

Over the course of 250 episodes, there has been no more appropriate title than 2010’s No Reason. Graphic depictions of oral sex and babies being shot in the head are just a taste of what this extreme horror film has in store for anyone who dares to watch it. A series of random horrific things happen over the course of one grisly hour and even though a twist near the end tries to explain everything, it ends up being little more than shock cinema.

Sometimes it seems like the Video Nasties list was made specifically for Italian horror movies. One filmmaker who constantly caught heat was Joe D’Amato. Antropophagus was banned for its scenes of a monster strangling a pregnant woman then taking the fetus from her womb and eating it. One of the Emanuelle movies he was in charge of featured a scene in which a woman ejaculated a horse. D’Amoto may not be on the same plane as Dario Argento or Lucio Fulci, but he definitely left his mark.

Beyond the Darkness may be the perfect mix of sex and violence. Having plenty of each but not going overboard with either, the story pulls audiences in while disgusting them. The music (done by the always awesome Goblin) enhances the atmosphere, and while the story can get goofy and hard to understand, it is consistently fun.

Eli Roth is a lot like Rob Zombie. (Or is it the another way around?) That is a bold statement, but we talk about what the two horror fans have in common - and it is not the fact they both had trailers in Grindhouse. The difference is Roth knows how to put together a movie. Still, there have been some missteps along the way. Does Roth let his worst instincts take over Thanksgiving or is it more like the classic Cabin Fever?

It is hard to talk about any high school slasher made in the last quarter century without talking about Scream. The movie deconstructed horror and its influence is still felt. It is a very high bar, and most films do not even come close to meeting that lofty standard. We break down the things that Thanksgiving was able to succeed at and what did not work as well.

Whether they are there to be fodder or provide some level of depth, characters are an important part of any slasher. Thanksgiving has a surprisingly strong cast that do an excellent job getting audiences invested. But the thing most people will watch the movie for are the kills. The opening segment will clue in anyone watching. We discuss how well things were done and one of the most disturbing scenes we have watched all year.

We may not have spent much time talking about it, but the actors strike loomed over our humble little podcast. Now that it is apparently over, we talk about the ramifications it had and what it means for the future. We also have a discussion about the the prequel to Stephen King's It, Welcome to Derry. There are plenty of stories to be told and the possibilities for  a strong King property are there.

Leprechaun is a strange franchise. It is well-known with even people who have never watched any of them being able to name some of the movies in the franchise. And the titular character is a popular one. It is a smaller series whose first two entries were released in theaters before the rest went straight to video. Until 2014's Leprechaun: Origins.

The WWE Studios release is an interesting one that moves the franchise away from its comedy horror roots and goes all in on the scares. The jokes have all been removed and the film has become a creature feature. How well does it work? Well the fact that the next entry was a return to what the Leprechaun is known for says it all.

Hell House  LLC is another franchise that does not have the largest fanbase. While there is not one villain, there is an overarching story. The fourth installment adds to the lore while staying true to its original roots. We talk about the surprisingly strong characters, the straightforward storytelling, and whether we would want to see more of the found footage movies.

Hollywood has all but come to a complete halt in recent months. One thing that has not changed is the news of more installments of established franchises. We talk about the interesting history of Highlander, the odd decision to make another Hocus Pocus movie, and how we feel about each one.

We all knew that Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey was not going to set a new standard. It was clear from the beginning that it was going to coast as far as it could with its beloved children’s story adapted into a horror movie concept. If done correctly, that would be more than enough to make for a fun little horror movie. 

Instead, it did the bare minimum. There is no story, characters, or even a proper ending. The filmmakers decided that the idea of a Winnie the Pooh horror movie would be enough to attract attention and instead gave audiences a pointless slasher with some admittedly awesome kills. So what can other horror movies learn from it?

Squealer  has a strong opening and an interesting premise. At worst, it seems like it will be an engaging story. A lack of strong characters, a story that is way more filler than killer, and a number of subplots that add nothing make it a chore to sit through, however. Do a couple of gross moments save things. And what is Tyrese Gibson doing in it?

Viewing habits have changed drastically over the years. We talk about how delays have become a bigger part of the film calendar than ever before and how it now seems to take more than tentpole franchises to draw audiences. Plus, Mike Flannagan has another Stephen King adaptation coming and you may be surprised to hear who is part of the cast.

We have not done too many - if any - family friendly horror. This may be because there is so little to find on Shudder. This week’s show covers both bases as we cover a scary movie that the kiddos can watch and enjoy from the supernatural streaming network. The fact that it takes place in a Spirit Halloween should seal the deal for all the young ones in your house.

Spirit Halloween: The Movie is a straightforward story about a group of friends who decide to spend the night in the titular store. While there they must deal with a vengeful ghost. There are no twists or surprises and it is very much a “what you see is what you get” plot. It is perfect for a younger crowd, but it did not sit well with one of us.

Two horror icons teaming up for a horror movie centered around Halloween sounds like a good idea. Especially with a premise as goofy as the one Hayride to Hell gives audiences. But when the story is about a white man refusing to give up his land due to tradition is the least of the problems the writing has, you know you are in for a tough watch.

Hayride to Hell makes a strong case for most tone deaf movies we have ever covered. Even forgetting the protagonist who does not feel he has to pay back his bank loans, respect his neighbors’ legitimate concerns, or hire police for the crowded traffic, it is also incredibly misogynistic. Even if it were a 1970s exploitation flick, you would think they went too far.

We were both on the same page scripting-wise, but we were in entirely different books when it came to the performances.  We all know Kane Hodder is a great villain, but how is he as a smarmy asshole? And is Bill Moseley' wacky performance able to save this awful film?

To call Piper Laurie an underrated genre icon would not be entirely correct. She was an award winning actress who grabbed the spotlight in pretty much everything she was in. It is not until looking at her entire career that her contributions can be truly appreciated. We also revisit the idea of a Halloween television show and talk about the future of the V/H/S franchise.

True crime stories have real life horror naturally built into them. The Man in the White Van decides to lean into horror tropes and gives an almost slasher feel. It is a good idea in theory, but the execution makes for one of the worst things we have seen this year. From confusing editing to an ending that fails to work on any level, we go over everything it did wrong while trying to find something good about it.

At the other end of the spectrum is Last Stop Larrimah. For obvious reasons, there are not a lot of lighthearted true crime documentaries. This HBO documentary looks at the mysterious disappearance of a man living in the Australian outback. He lives in a small town of eleven people, and everyone is a suspect.

The film is able to mix humorous moments into its dark story without ever taking away from the gravity of the case. It is a bit of fresh storytelling that injects life into the genre. The already interesting case is made even more engaging thanks to the way in which everything unfolds. It is easily one of the better things we have seen this year.

There is so much to unpack when it comes to The Exorcist: Believer. How the rights almost cost half a billion dollars. The fact there is literally not one exorcist in the movie. Trying to connect it to the original. But we mainly talk about how disappointed we were. Do we have ourselves to blame?

It is hard not to go into some movies with high expectations - especially ones that have trailers as awesome as The Exorcist: Believer. As much as we anticipated it, we knew it would have to be something special to be one of our picks for best of the year. So, we went in with clear heads and just wanted to like it.

That being said, the trailers did an excellent job of pumping us up and the name The Exorcist carries gravity. We talk about how both may have ended up doing more harm than good. Should this have been its own IP? We also discuss its place in the franchise and what it means going forward.

It has been half a century since the original was released and proceeded to frighten audiences for decades. Few expected for the new release to have the same impact, but will it have any appeal to new audiences? Will horror fans be willing to accept it? The power of Christ compels us to talk about everything - and little of it is good.

Akela Cooper has become a low key regular on our humble little podcast. We raved about M3gan earlier this year and covered Hell Fest previously. We talk about her latest project which covers one of horror’s most popular tropes. Earlier this year, we were shocked to hear that Glen Danzig would be making an appearance at the Cannes Film Festival. He recently showed up at Fantastic Fest and made waves at a screening of V/H/S/85.

Nothing says Halloween like a good old fashioned haunted amusement park. (Not an amusement park that is literally haunted, but one that is horror themed, though the former is also really cool.) Scream Park from 2013 is a goofy idea that has promise for a fun horror movie. A scary park is having financial woes, so the owner decides to stage a series of murders to drum up interest.

It may not be the best way to get people to pay for your rides, but it works for an indie horror movie. And it was clearly made with love as it has horror vibes from the 1970s and 80s. But there are a lot of issues. From bad pacing to its poor treatment of its female characters - including a kill that is funny and gross for all the wrong reasons -, the film will constantly frustrate audiences.

Spooktacular! Will also bother those who watch, but in a different way. Again, it is a great idea; the documentary looks at the rise, fall, and lasting impact of Spooky World, the first haunted amusement park. There is lots of great archival footage and the whole thing is filled with a sense of nostalgia. But it also comes with a lot of filler. Constant clips of Vincent Price movies and incomplete tangents take away from the overall feeling.  There is a lot to like here, but was it enough?

Last year was supposed to be the end of Halloween. It would have been the worst possible way for the celebrated franchise to end, but it was time for it to go away - at least for a lonnnnnng time. Hollywood is never afraid to keep recycling ideas, so we start the show with a talk about the future of the series.

Netflix has been a major player in the streaming wars from the beginning. What few remember and even fewer know is that it got it start as a DVD rental company with a novel idea. As that era ends, we reminisce about the early days of Netflix and the internet in general.

Video Nasties are an important part of horror history. A list of movies that were deemed as obscene and morally irrelevant were soon banned and their distribution became criminal. It was not until the end of the 20th century that the laws relaxed, if ever so slightly.

Killer Nun is an interesting inclusion. There are enough scenes that justify the decision to place it on the list, but it stands our from the rest. Less over the top and gory, the plot is based on true events. The mix of outrageous moments and grounded storytelling gave us plenty to talk about.

Full Moon Features is responsible for some of the most loved and disregarded franchises. One of the most overrated is the Demonic Toys series. We talk the latest addition and wonder what appeal it will have to modern audiences.

We love covering indie films. It is especially fun when you get to see something really special. Still, it is hard not to worry that these little movies will not find a home. We do not expect these releases to have Barbie levels of success (though that would be awesome); we just want audiences to have the chance to see them.

This is why channels like Shudder are so important. Movies like You’ll Never Find Me have an opportunity to be seen and hopefully appreciated. We also talk about the genius of Taylor Swift and the power of her fans. We also look ahead to the last full week of September.

Werewolves have an interesting place in horror. They are one of the most popular monsters, but they are often treated as cute or funny. A strange fate for a creature that is rooted in tragedy. Shaky Shivers is the latest werewolf film with a silly spin. We talk about its performances, comedy, and surprising tie to Fast & Furious.

When people talk about how they dislike foreign movies, they do not think of the works of Park Chan Wook or J-Horror. It is not influential giallo or the body horror from France that turns audiences off either. For whatever reason, people equate foreign movies as “too artsy”. This week’s feature presentation is a great example of why.

The Origin of Evil has all the right ingredients for a fun and twisting narrative. There are wacky characters, an engaging mystery, and some hard hitting moments. It is also strangely paced, constantly anticlimactic and the writing seems unsure of itself. It does just about everything well, but nothing stands out.

We love a good mystery. Hercule Poirot, ensemble casts, television shows, we enjoy them all. Though its target audience has always skewed older, we are huge fans of Murder, She Wrote. Recent news of a movie has us excited and we talk about who would make a great Jessica Fletcher. The 2019 Hellboy remake was a critical and commercial disaster. Still, few were surprised another reboot was in the works. The latest version seems to be taking a more streamlined approach but will audiences care?

Undying Love seemed like the perfect pick. It has a thumbnail reminiscent of something out of the 1990s, the plot follows a troubled youth being entangled with a beautiful vampire, and the word “erotic” constantly comes up in descriptions of the film. The fact that it came out in 2022, only made it that much more interesting.

We like to consider ourselves champions of indie film so when this movie that was released in 2022 looked like something from decade, it did not faze us. And as it turns out, Undying Love actually came out in 1991 though it looks like it was made in 1981. Even that would not be problem; the acting, story, and characters, however…

Dance With Death came out in 1992 and looks like it. With a cast that includes Martin Mull and Lisa Kudrow in her first credited screen role, the film certainly has star power. The story may be bare bones (a reporter goes undercover as a topless dancer to catch a killer), but there is plenty of intrigue and great characters. It certainly does not skimp on the nudity, but there is much more to the movie than a bunch of naked women.

There is not much in the way of movie news this week (at least not the kind we are interested in talking about) so it begs the question: are the two ongoing strikes in Hollywood starting to shows their effects? On the other hand, it is one of the slower movie months of the year, so how much would there be to talk about even if things were going smoothly. Plus, there were plenty of posters and trailers that came out. We also talk about the career arc of Bill Maher.

It has been a while since we have talked about a short film on the show. This year's Fantasia Film Festival provided us with some of the best stuff we have seen this year. Transylvanie is an interesting short whose silly name will throw audiences off. Yes, it is cute and has some funny moments, but it is also very dark. We talk about where it fits in the plethora of vampire movies and whether we would be interested in seeing it as full feature.

We have never made it a secret that we love erotic thrillers. We dedicated a whole month to the genre (check out our Stank Month shows!) and have talked about it on numerous episodes this year. We have also been lucky enough to cover a couple of movies that came out this year that are reminiscent of the late night premium cable staples.

We Kill for Love is one of the best documentaries about cinema our there. It never takes itself too seriously without ever pointing fun at the genre that teenagers of the 1990s grew up on. It tracks the history of erotic thrillers and provides some interesting points. All the while, it will fill audiences with a sense of nostalgia. Even those unfamiliar with the movies will get a kick out of the great interviews and clips.

Barbie finally relinquished the top box office spot in a close race. It was extremely close and did nothing to make us believe that the pink phenom is done at theaters. The question becomes will it reclaim number one? We also talk about National Cinema Day and why 50 Cent is so pissed.

Bootyology is a refreshing change of pace. Even the silliest movies we cover have an air of seriousness around them. A mockumentary about two  white rappers who rap exclusively about butts has nothing serious to say, however. But is it too silly? Its subject matter means it is going to go for low hanging fruit. And as awesome as The Booty Boys are, the duo are incredibly dumb. Bootyology becomes a case of whether the pros outweigh the cons.

On the other end of the spectrum is this week’s feature presentation. The Black Mass is a true crime thriller about the twenty four hours leading up to a gruesome rampage. It is methodical, creepy, and has a third act that is hard to stomach. It is also about one of the most overused subjects in true crime.

Devanny Pinn did not make it easy for herself in her feature debut. We have talked about our dislike of Bundy films. Even if you ignore the fact that he is always glamorized, there is just a glut of releases centered around him. The Black Mass strips away all of the serial killer’s power and focuses on the evil around him, but did Pinn do enough to make it stand out?

As iconic as Dracula is, there are not many blockbusters centered around him. The most well known ones enter the pop culture lexicon and have long lives. Except at the box office. The vampire movies that have sprung from Bram Stoker’s novel are a different story.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter is a take on a chapter from the original book. But it is really a story of missed opportunities. We talk about all the strange plot holes and constant teases. This includes one of the worst attempts at social commentary ever seen and the misuse of a number of great actors.

We tried to judge the film on its own merits, but it’s hard not to compare it to the source material. As the trailers have shown, The Last Voyage of the Demeter leans into the monster aspect of Dracula. How well did it showcase its powers? And what did we think of its sequel baiting ending?

For all the bad, we actually had some good things to say. Not everyone may be a fan of one of the most debonair horror figures being turned into a mindless beast, but it looked pretty cool. Plus, there is some good gore and exploding bodies. But is it enough?

It has been a Barbie world for the past few weeks. On our last episode, Blake made a bold prediction. We check up to see how well his comment aged and also go back to a time before “Go Ninja! Scary movies and coming of age stories traffic in the familiar. This is not a bad thing. The relatability and comfort they bring is part of what makes them so popular. Zach tells us why he married the two genres and his inspirations for the story. He also shares the process behind making The Weird Kidz and its future.

Zach came bearing gifts. He decided to stick around to talk about 1986’s River’s Edge. When Dennis Hooper is the most reasonable adult in the room, you know there are problems. Possibly the darkest teen movie ever,  the film explores the lives of a group of friends after one of them commits a shocking act.

The show starts with a talk about Barbie. It has been a strange year at the box office and Greta Gerwig’s latest release surpassed expectations in a record breaking opening. The question becomes what can stop it? It may not be until the October release of The Exorcist: Believer. The trailer sure looks awesome.

Fantasia is the biggest genre film fest in North America and each edition has some great offerings. This year is no different as it not only boasts some of the most exciting indie films of 2023, there is also a focus on South Korean cinema.

We start our look at Fantasia with the latest movie starring Georgina Campbell. How good is Lovely, Dark, and Deep? The great acting and setting alone make it one of the best of the year. The cinematography is also fantastic, but it is the story the truly sets it apart. It is not very often you see a movie that is so good that it actually makes you jealous.

Nicolas Cage as Dracula is awesome enough, but him possibly playing the Devil may be the greatest casting choice ever. Sympathy for the Devil definitely has its twist and surprises, but not all of them were good. We talk about what we like about it and what it did to disappoint us.

We have never been shy about our opinions on fair compensation. That being said, we have not formed an opinion on the ongoing actors strike because we have not done enough research. We do address the topic as it pertains to our show and also understand that this is  an age in which people have to take a stand on every single issue, one way or another. Before shouting your opinion from the rooftops make sure you know what you are talking about.

Horror franchises drive the genre. Subtitles like Origins, Extinction, and Revelations are more common than iconic villains. The announcement of Pet Sematary: Bloodlines is somewhat surprising even though it shouldn’t be. We share our excitement and trepidation.

Another upcoming sequel that caught us off guard is Saw X. There is no doubting it is one of the most popular and well know series ever, but it seemed like it was going to be put on hold for the time being. But it seems like the Spiral is experiment is over before it even had a chance to begin.

We love Kyle Gallner, so it should come as no surprise that we jumped at the chance to see him star in a genre film. Mother, May I? is a thought provoking thriller that takes on mental illness, childhood trauma, and relationships. Heady stuff to be sure, but it is also a creepy horror movie.

Cobweb is a twisty film that will keep its audiences guessing. What starts off as standard fare soon becomes something much more sinister and frightening. After creating genuine concern, things go in another direction. The first twist had us both on board, but the second had us on opposing sides.

It is the summer blockbuster season and that means week after week of memorable movies and huge box offices. At least, it did in previous years. We talk about the surprising successes and failures, the great showing of recent horror releases, and whether there will be a bonafide hit during the biggest movie time of the year.

Alita: Battle Angel came and went without much fanfare. When one of our biggest memories is that fact that a certain subset of people supported the film for the dumbest reason, you know there is not much the the actual movie. So, it came as a huge surprise when James Cameron recently mentioned how there is not one, but two, sequels planned for the surprising hit.

The Flood seems like a fun premise. A huge storm in Louisiana provides the perfect coverage for a daring prison break. Unfortunately, some incredibly angry alligators have different plans. Throw in plenty of fodder and some pretty gnarly gator kills and it sounds like a good time for all.

Yet, it somehow does not work. From overpowered characters to strange decisions, the film never seems able to find its way. It is a great example of a recent trend in Hollywood. This is arguably the best looking and simultaneously less sexy time in cinema ever. Does this lack of sex appeal hurt movies? Not necessarily. But it can add a layer to characters and storytelling when done right.

But would it help The Flood?

One Cut of the Dead is one of the most heartwarming and interesting success stories in cinema history. Still, it is surprising that a remake would come out of France. From an Oscar winning director! Final Cut is a loving remake that does not change much from the original. We debate the effectiveness of the characters and talk about the manipulative ending that somehow works.

Clickbait has been around since the dawn of the internet. So, it is little surprise that the news of a third Dune movie sent shockwaves throughout the internet. Of course, there has been no confirmation there will be a trilogy, but that did not stop fans from celebrating and both of us from complaining.

For years, people have warned about the increasing reliance on streaming networks. The chance of shows and movies being lost forever means little to people who grew up during the 1980s. Back then, you only had a few chances to see the stuff you really wanted. But now that the media giants are beginning to remove shows, should we be worried?

DBS Films is a credit to the horror community. Their movies may not be the most well known, but they look to their fans to cast parts and even get ideas. This does not hide the fact that Horror in the Forest is not a very good movie. From poor acting to one of the flattest endings this year, it is a huge disappointment.

Biosphere is on the other end of the spectrum. The story of the last two men on earth running out of food sounds promising, but little else. Thanks to a pair of incredible performances and a heartfelt story that will keep audiences guessing, it exceeds all expectations. It deals in a number of topical themes while mixing in visual gags. It is risky, engaging, and a hell of a lot of fun.

When we spoke about the disappearance of Julian Sands in January , we took for granted that we would be found. Regrettably, his remains were found this week. He was a great actor who will be missed.

We admit it. There has been too much talk about comic book movies on this show lately. But the casting of Superman and Lois Lane is impossible to ignore. We give our opinions on the new actors and what it means for the DC Extended Universe.

It has been a while since we talked about cryptids. Our first review from Chattanooga is a look at America’s most famous mythical beast. At least, that is what it sounds like. Can you have a movie called The Bigfoot Trap and have no Bigfoot?

That is not the case here, but it sure does come close. Instead of being a story about the creature, the film focuses on its two main characters. It is a mixed bag that comes together in one of the best endings we have seen this year. But is it enough to save the movie?

We love found footage movies. The two of us are not the biggest fans of the term “POV movie”, but that does not take away from our enjoyment of the sub-genre. (We are just cranky old men who have a problem when it comes to change.)

Mind Body Spirit appealed to us because it is classic found footage with a modern sensibility. There are some creepy moments, some pretty neat gore, and yes, a computer cam. The film did a lot to impress us. So what stopped it from being something special?

We start the show with a tale of two box offices. It does not come as a surprise The Flash has underperformed at the box office. It was definitely a combination of superhero fatigue, the DCEU never catching on, and Ezra’s Miller's past problems, but what factored in the most? And how far up his own butt is Wes Anderson?

The passing of Treat Williams was a major blow to genre cinema. Treat has been around for decades and was a great leading man. We decided to cover one of his more recent movies. And who would have thought that the best Covid movie ever was made over twenty years ago?

Surprisingly, Venomous was never mentioned during the phase when everyone was locked at home watching movies about global pandemics. From lockdowns to masks to citizens being subjected to fake news, the film about genetically engineered rattlesnakes is like a crystal ball from 2000. The great use of stock footage, big explosions, and frightening snakes pushed it over the top.

They do not make movies like Mad Heidi. It is an exploitation movie pure and simple. A great mix of sex appeal and over the top violence, it will appeal to fans of old school grindhouse offerings without pushing away modern audiences. Few indie movies are as franchise ready and Alice Lucy absolutely shines.

Before we talk about movies, we talk about the passing of author Corman McCarthy. One of the best American writers of all time, McCarthy’s influence on cinema cannot be overstated. He was unconventional, but he was a true credit to American literature.

Remember when Fede Alvarez was a good director? A lot of people seem to since whenever they talk about him they are sure to mention 2013’s Evil Dead. That was a decade ago and he has not done anything worthwhile since. Which is just part of the reason his upcoming Alien remake has us worried.

Those aren’t the only complaints we had about upcoming movies. Disney recently revealed some changes to their upcoming releases, and it was wild to say the least. Unsure of what you want to watch in 2031? Looking forward to Blade? Can’t wait to see Rey’s next adventure in the new Star Wars movie? You better have patience.

We only review one movie this week, but it is one of the most memorable of the year. You’ll Never Find Me is a World Premiere from Tribeca that is unafraid to take risks. Lots and lots of risks. Methodical pacing leading to a wild ending, characters you don’t know what to think of, and tomato soup all play a big role in this Australian horror movie.

Our favorite episodes are the ones where we get to go back and recap previous episodes. And the midway point of the year is a great time to look back on the movies we liked the most, could not stand, and left us wanting more. You will be surprised by some of our picks.

Action movies just aren't our thing. Sure, there are exceptions like John Wick and Sisu, but for every Hobbes & Shaw, there is the entire Fast & Furious franchise. The Expendables has never caught our fancy and the poster for the latest installment pretty much sums up what we think of the entire series.

We spoke a few weeks ago about the surprising number of genre films that are showing at this year's Tribeca Festival. We start the show with one of fest's many world premieres. Somewhere Quiet is the story of a woman who has escaped an awful kidnapping. She and her husband  Scott head out to the his house in the woods so she can regroup. The unexpected appearance of Scott's cousin leads to high anxiety.

We discuss the difficulty with getting behind certain characters, suspect writing, and an outstanding performance. There is plenty of good things in Somewhere Quiet, but is it enough to save its confusing ending? Or did the deeper meaning just fly over our heads?

Robert Englund is a true icon of horror. He may not want to admit it, and  every person may not recognize his name, but  there isn't a soul who does not know who Freddy Krueger is. But there is more to Englund than A Nightmare on Elm Street. Hollywood Dreams and Nightmares is an in-depth look at the actor's career.

The thing that comes across most is Englund's love of cinema and his humility. He is interesting and has some great stories to share. (He has been in the orbit of some of Hollywood's most influential films.) There is a lot of talk about Nightmare, but the documentary has a whole lot more to offer. We also about our newfound appreciation for Screambox.

You know there is not much going on in the indie and genre world when the possible KISS biopic starts off the show. That being said, it is a fun discussion that includes street festivals, the mystique behind KISS, and what it is like to see the most mountains you have ever seen in your life.

What does Chris Rock have to do with queer horror? Not much. Then why are we covering Spiral? Believe it or not, there were actually two horror movies with the name released within a few months of each other. We cover the Shudder original about a same sex couple that move to a small town to raise their teenaged daughter. They soon learn their neighbors harbor a dark secret.

On the surface, the movie does a lot right. It presents a gay couple as nothing out of the ordinary, yet still makes the pairing a focal point of the plot. One of us had an epiphany watching Spiral while the other was unimpressed. And both of us agreed that for all the good it does, the film has a lot of flaws.

We have covered some sexy movies on our humble little podcast. We even dedicated a whole month to erotic thrillers. But few movies have been as sexy as Follow Her. We even wonder if we have ever covered a movie that is filled with this much lust. The story focuses on a social media influencer who accepts a job to complete an erotic novel. We begin with a talk about two of this year’s biggest and most controversial releases. The latest Indiana Jones film was met with a mixed reaction at Cannes. Meanwhile, on this side of the ocean the director of The Flash releases a huge spoiler. How is this good news for Indy and bad news for the DCEU?

One of our most popular episodes was a show we did centered around erotic thrillers. For whatever reason, we have not covered one in a long time. This week we return to the subject with a fresh take on the genre out of Argentina. The Attachment Diaries is a stylish neo noir that tackles some heady topics. The film is well-written, boasts two strong lead performances, and is unafraid to get graphic. But does pacing and an abrupt ending destroy all the good will?

There are arguably more movies about sharks than any other subject. There were so many that it was almost impossible to fin this week's feature on Tubi. Shark in Venice proves the number of good ones is much smaller. Are two big name stars (at least, the siblings of A-listers) enough to save a plot that is unsure of what it wants to be?

TRIGGER WARNING. ONE OF THE MOVIES THIS WEEK DEALS WITH SEXUAL ASSAULT AND STRONG LANGUAGE

There is lots of movie news this week. Beetlejuice is an absolute classic, so the news of a sequel was met with lots of excitement. But the original came out over three decades ago. And Tim Burton has not made a good movie in decades. And sequels made years after the fact do not tend to do well. Are we still excited? Plus, the surprising Five Nights at Freddy's trailer and Danzig's adventures on the French Riviera.

Moon Garden sounds like one of those movies that kids will love. It boasts fantastic imagery, outrageous characters, and an awesome villain. How did it end up being one of the most difficult films we have ever watched and why? In another case of style over substance we try to figure out the audience for this movie and question the casting.

We have covered some difficult movies on this show. Soft & Quiet may top the list. Both of use were left affected and have a lot to say. Perhaps surprisingly, both of us had drastically different opinions. We agreed that there were some definite flaws, but one of us  would never wish this on anyone, while the other felt this is something worth seeing.

There is no doubting it is a topical movie, but is it an important film of this generation? Would it have made a greater impact if it were released in a different time? What was the point of Soft & Quiet and did it take things too far? All this and more on our latest show.

A pair of interesting trailers dropped this week. With a sequel coming soon, We remember how Bird Box took the world by storm, and how much we did not care. For those who have not seen the trailer for Meg 2, rush to check it out. We saw it and were dumbfounded and amazed.

It is hard to believe just how popular the BlackBerry was. It is even more surprising that it’s rise and fall happened within the past quarter century. Starring Glenn Howerton and Jay Baruchel, the film about the world’s first smartphone promised some entertainment.

The film exceeds all expectations and expectations with great writing and outrageous characters. BlackBerry is less about the phone and more about the people behind it. There is some nostalgia, but the movie offers much more.  It is an early contender for one of the best movies of the year.

Horror is constantly looking to its past to tell new stories. Smile is one of the most formulaic ones out there. It works thanks to some great performances, scary moments, and amazing imagery. We discuss its near perfect finale, how it deals with mental health, and how even old school storytelling can be a breath of fresh air.

The Artifice Girl seems like it is going to be just another to add to the pile - an AI program used to catch online predators has advanced beyond its original purpose. It defies expectations, but will audiences like it?

During the opening weekend of John Wick 4, one trailer stood out. Sisu is an over the top, violent, and bloody World War II adventure. The story involves Nazis, gold, and a cute dog, but it is the bonkers action that is the real draw. Just because a movie is crazy does not mean it is good, however.

There is nothing we can say about our love of Evil Dead that has not already been said by Deadites around the world. So, it was a no brainer that we were gonna give Evil Dead Rise the Special Edition treatment. This is one of our most anticipated movies of the year and we could not wait to talk about it.

No matter your personal opinion of the movies, there is little arguing that Evil Dead is one of the most consistent horror franchises out there. Through sequels, remakes, and television series, it always delivers a strong product. We had little worries that we were in for a good movie, but that does not mean we did not have some trepidation going in.

One of the things Evil Dead is known for its wacky humor. The latest installment is closer to the 1981 original than the rest of the series. While it has some moments of humor, this is a mean horror movies. We talk about how well this tonal change worked. We also compare it to the subject of last week's special edition. Renfield catered to horror fans, while Evil Dead Rise invited in mainstream audiences while having some fan service. The box office results demonstrate how well that worked.

Every trailer for Renfield made a few things clear. The film was going to be silly and it was going to be bloody. Very very bloody. There are lots of great comedy-horror movies, but when the mix does not work, it makes for a bad viewing experience. We talk about how well it worked here and how it is closer to The Naked Gun than Nosferatu.

Another big part of the trailers was the support group that Renfield appears to be a part of. They played a bigger part that some may expect. Even more shocking, they showcase some of the best writing in Renfield. But was it a little too much or the perfect addition to an already silly movie?

Renfield does not shy away from violence and has what will end up being some of the bloodiest scenes of the year. It was like a midnight movie brought to mainstream audiences. The film definitely knows it audience, not only ramping up the violence, but giving little in the way of a backstory. It is easily one of the most refreshing decisions in cinema in recent years.

Of course, the most buzz will be around Cage. The internet's favorite actor puts on another fantastic performance. We compare it to some of this other roles and gush about how Cage would be a mega star in any era. Does he live up to expectations or are we simply fanboying out?

We have never denied our ability to peek into the future. A few weeks back we talked about the lack of Star Wars movies. We really did not car, but it was surprising. And wouldn’t you know it, we get news is three new films. We also talk about another spinoff of from a major horror franchise.

Like most horror fans, we love found footage movies in spite - or maybe because - of all of their faults. The first film we review this week gave is a chance to review the a modern take on the genre. It is also an old school haunted house story that feels a lot like a slasher from the 1980s. It also has a third act that feels disconnected from the rest of the film. 

Cube is one of those movies that everyone seems to know, but is never mentioned. In an era when only the most popular shows and movies are revisited, a Cube remake is shocking. Is the Japanese version an improvement or is it just another sequel. We talk about the themes it tries to tackle, the kills, and the twist ending.

Johnny Depp has helped audiences through some difficult times. We are not talking about any of his movies. We mean his trial with Amber Herd which provided hours of entertainment during some dark moments. Just when it looked like Depp's career was over, he is back, and you will not believe where. We recently saw John Wick: Chapter 4 and loved every second of it. When he found out one of the cast was in their own kung-fu movie, we knew we had to watch it. And we were not surprised, as Fist of the Condor had one of the most satisfying endings we have ever seen. But the rest of it was a confusing mess. Was a Renegade reference enough to save it?

Anyone who sees the posters for Paint will immediately think of Bob Ross. While The Joy of Painting host was a major influence, the IFC film tells its own story. We discuss is varied comedy, well written characters, and the strange decision to completely ignore one of the major characters. We also discuss reason why the movie is receiving so much hate.
