In our series finale, Daniel and Linzi remember the good (and the bad) of this season's books: Stalker From the Stars, The Chiffon Scarf, Buddies, The Penetrator: The Target is H, and Some Sort of Spell. We are joined by your votes from the People's Pulpies survey, as well as call-in votes from Amber, Courtney of The Cult of Domesticity, and Jessie of Alphabet Flight.
Expect at least one more episode this year, announcing updates on Linzi's (my) new project. For now, I will keep our Twitter and Instagram feeds going in case you want to say hi (and, selfishly, because that's where I can hang with my podfriends).
Words really cannot express how much you have meant to us. Instead, we tip our hats and raise our not-so-pulpy glasses to you, dear listener, for your support.

She didn't ask to be rescued.
Beatrice's half sister had done a lot of crazy things, but inviting Elliot Chalmers to temporarily share their home while his was being renovated--that was the limit!
Everyone knew that Beatrice and Elliott had never seen eye to eye over her dedication to her orphaned siblings. He'd even nicknamed her "Cinders."
Well, handsome prince or no, she hadn't invited him to interfere. And although silently grateful for the added household discipline, Beatrice drew the line where Elliott seemed most intent on crossing--her personal life!

MARK HARDIN...The Penetrator. He'd learned how in Vietnam. Infiltrate the enemy's position, determine the plan of action and then strike swiftly, taking out as many key men as possible, wreaking destruction, leaving chaos in your wake.
Now he was in Los Angeles, engaged in a new, far more sinister war. But he was fully prepared and totally committed, and bound by no rules but his own.
He is tall and slim, reflecting his unique Indian-Welsh background. His driver's license indicates his age is twenty-eight. If he seems a bit grim, it is for good reason.
He was orphaned at four, when his parents and three brothers and sisters were killed in an automobile crash. Since then he's been mistreated, brutalized by life, injured in games (football), and wounded in combat. But he's survived. Mark Hardin is tough, a survivor. And an expert. Marksmanship, karate, aikido, and even the crossbow, are part of his arsenal.
He is a new breed of warrior--without uniform, without rank--dedicated to the American way of life, and pledged to fight anyone who seeks to destroy it. On either side of the law. That's why he's in Los Angeles. Just the beginning of a long and lonely series of brushfire wars.

Me and My Shadow
All my life I've been known as "Dinah Feeney--The Kind One." You know, the type of person who can never say no to anything: the neighborhood hand-me-downs, my old dog Rollo, or the dumb poodle hat my Aunt Maude knit for me. Let's face it, I'm a sucker. So when my parents said I could go to Camp Miniwawa for two weeks, I decided it was time to say good-bye to the old, nice, and boring me and become a member of the "in crowd" for the first time in my life.
At first, camp was great. Two of the most popular girls became my friends. But then Fern Wadley happened. The grossest person I had ever met decided I was going to be her best buddy. How could I possibly be friendly with someone who picked her teeth, walked around with lettuce stuck to her face, and wouldn't leave me alone f or a second?
I didn't want to hurt her feelings, but I had to get rid of Fern! My vacation, my new friends, and "Dinah Feeney--The Popular One," were all at stake.

MIGNON G. EBERHART WRITES A MYSTERY ABOUT MURDER IN THE SKY...

Mary and Mike recap this middle third of The Chiffon Scarf in our first FOUR-PERSON book recap! In this episode, they each take 16.67% (rounded up) of the middle third and walk us through some major developments: there's more bad news for the Blaine family, Eden gets her hands on everything, and Dorothy is still around. There are also several reminders this book was published in 1939, in the form of racial, gendered, and nativist stereotypes that are as subtle as a stranger on Sloane's ranch.
**NB: We apologize for the audio quality. Our guests Mike and Mary were both sick and didn't realize they were recording from their laptop mic. The content is so good though, we hope you won't notice!

We're back....next week! We'll kick off Season 5 with the book Stalker From the Stars.
Follow us on social media!
Hello friends! In this final stop of our off-season tour, Linzi reads a short story written by her niece Taylor. The story is about life, death, discovery, and transformation. There's a critique of the US healthcare system and a bold proclamation about our post-human future.
There's also an update in this episode (that our book club will officially launch Season 5--full of pulp novel goodness--on May 7th).
Thanks for listening!

We're still thinking of you, dear listener! In this micro ep, Taylor comes back to talk about one of her favorite books (that she hasn't read in a while), explain some social ramifications of cutting up your employers towels, and learn a new word.

PODCOIN is the word on the street.
In our season 4 finale, Daniel and Linzi remember the good (and the bad) of this season's books: Claudia and the First Thanksgiving, Do Not Murder Before Christmas, Ghosts I Have Been, The Panorama Egg, and The Secret of the Old Clock. We're 33% Pulp and you're 100% as cool as Mrs. Pickett.
Editor's Note: I (Linzi) tried a new audio levelling tool but the ep came out a bit...unlevelled. That said, the content is all present and audible. Sorry! Won't happen again!
We'll be on hiatus for a bit, but we'll still be releasing content and updates. Stay tuned!

Goodreads Summary:
His name was Archer and he thought he was an ordinary man. The collectors of panorama eggs knew better. For Archer was such a collector, and there was a very special find awaiting him: the panorama egg that contained a world. He was guided in the use of that incredible masterwork by the enigmatic grey woman, Mera Melaklos. That was her name in this everyday world. But her real name could have been something else beyond this space-time continuum. For indeed Archer and the grey woman crossed into a world that was not Earth, found they had special roles to play in a land where alternate science reigned and a mission of heroism was the price of existence.

Goodreads Summary of the book:
In the twenty-second century, the City of Angels is a tragic shell of its former self, having long ago been ruined and reshaped by nuclear disaster. Before he was in a band in Ellay, Gregorio Rivas was a redeemer, rescuing lost souls trapped in the Jaybirds cult of the powerful maniac Norton Jaybush. Rivas had hoped those days were behind him, but a desperate entreaty from a powerful official is pulling him back into the game. The rewards will be plentiful if he can wrest Urania, the official’s daughter and Gregorio’s first love, from Jaybush’s sinister clutches. To do so, the redeemer reborn must face blood-sucking hemogoblins and other monstrosities on his way to discovering the ultimate secrets of this neo-Californian civilization.

Goodreads summary of the book:
CODE NAME POSTER The first practical matter transmitter was a success, or so everyone thought. In spite of paranoid security restrictions, Justin Williams and Cinnamon Wright, co-inventors of the device, counted on it to revolutionize civilization and gain them an honored place in history. But the first long-distance field test with a human being—a diplomatic courier carrying a vital message—somehow misfired when the courier killed himself on arrival at his destination. To prove his faith in his invention—and to escape charges of sabotage—Justin had himself "posted" thousands of miles. He came through unchanged. It was the world that was somehow different...

Daniel recaps the final third of House Dick, where Novak keeps his receipts, Julia is left with crappy options, and Novak makes a new friend.

Goodreads summary of the book:
House Dick is one of Hunt’s very best, a classic hardboiled story of a detective in a Washington D.C. hotel (no, not that hotel) investigating a twisty tale of burglary and murder, of skullduggery under cover of darkness, of deception and shifting loyalties – and of the price you pay when you trust the wrong people…

Our Conjure Wife coverage extends to three film adaptations that each take a very different approach to the original text. In this companion episode, Shelby and Jenni from the Wives' Tales podcast join Daniel and Linzi to discuss the 1962 adaptation "Burn, Witch, Burn" (aka "Night of the Eagle"). Of the three movies, this one has the highest production standards and men's trousers. The episode contains the Wives' Tales ladies dropping knowledge about witches, voodoo, special "nerve charms," and Trick-or-Treat etiquette.

For the first 33% Pulp companion episode, Janine from Guess What You're Gonna Hate? and Courtney from The Cult of Domesticity join Linzi to discuss the 1944 film adaptation of Conjure Wife, Weird Woman. (The movie and book end very differently!) We recap and review the movie, covering all the bases: floating heads, hair that looks like brains, depictions of indigenous peoples in midcentury cinema, lots of bread (of the white variety), and a little thing called "lamp theory" that will change how you see cinema forever.

4.5 stars. Mixing together oral tradition and individual introspection, this podcast features three friends who each read one-third of a book and then explain it to the other two. Books from decades ago get a kind of reboot over three episodes. So far, while they add their own flair to the stories, they treat books (and authors) with respect by giving backstory and relevant context. While the novel itself is THE core component, the hosts each have a different storytelling style, prioritizing things like humor, radio dramatization, and fascinating research. You can tell they are friends with different but, luckily for the listener, overlapping interests. The level of banter is currently PERFECT. It's incredibly annoying and alienating when podcasters veer too off-topic and caught up in their own jokes. This podcast features relevant and funny commentary as the story unfolds. I checked out their instagram account and recommend following it for historical references (again, really thorough research) for context and visualization. It really adds to the story. I clicked through their Twitter account....for now at least, instagram seems the way to go if you're interested in getting the "full" experience. Twitter seems completely unnecessary. It does not add to the podcast material. The Facebook link on their website doesn't work, so that also needs to be addressed. While ACCEPTABLE, the audio quality is inconsistent and, at one point, one of the female hosts was only in my left ear. Dear podcasters: you WILL lose listeners if you can't properly edit and mix the audio. Podcasts are meant to be heard. If the audio is lacking, it will degrade the experience no matter how great the content. To improve, they need to first improve their audio engineering. Then, if they want to really excel, they need to ensure a steady and consistent social media presence. Overall though, this podcast has content with great potential. I hope it sticks around for a long time, I'd love to see how it develops.
