Hi everyone! Today on Looking Forward we’re going to focus on the evolving world of engineering, and how engineers across the world are tackling some of the most complex global challenges we face.
In Part 1 of this two-part series, Episode #79, we’re going to look at how engineering has changed over the past few decades and what new areas of specialization have arisen for engineer.
We’ll also discuss some of the National Academy of Engineering’s 14 Grand Challenges, whose ultimate objective is to improve our world… and our quality of lives. The challenges include such things as making solar energy more economical, engineering better medicines, reverse engineering the brain, securing cyberspace, providing access to clean water, and preventing nuclear terror.
To help us with all this, we’ve brought on an expert on this topic. He’s Dr. Levi Thompson. Levi Thompson is the Dean of Engineering and the Elizabeth Inez Kelley Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Delaware, where he leads more than 3,500 students, 300-plus faculty and staff, seven departments and more than a dozen research centers in expanding the university's ability to address the world's most vexing challenges.
Prior to joining UD, Dr. Thompson was on the faculty at the University of Michigan for 30 years. There his research focused on novel catalytic and energy storage materials, and he served in various leadership roles for hydrogen research, undergraduate education, and diversity recruitment and development efforts. He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineering an elected member of the National Academy of Engineering.
Dr. Thompson's research is focused on developing and commercializing nanoscale materials for catalytic and energy storage applications. He has authored more than 150 publications, is co-inventor on more than 10 patents, and has co-founded two companies focused to commercialize his discoveries.
