Now a bit about Bill. Bill Provine is the founder, President, and Chief Executive Officer of the Innovation Space, in addition to a member of its Board of Directors. In this role, Bill oversees all operations and is responsible for its overall performance.
Prior to joining the Innovation Space, Bill worked for DuPont. There he led global operations for science and engineering, encompassing DuPont's open innovation practice. This included oversight for DuPont’s innovation centers and regional laboratories around the world. He also has served in a variety of research, marketing, business development, joint venture, and manufacturing leadership roles in DuPont over the last 30 years.
Bill is very active in cultivating and advancing science across sectors and has served on numerous private company, university, industrial, governmental, and scientific association advisory and management boards and committees. He currently serves on the board of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) supporting scientific research and advocacy; the Resolution Project, supporting social entrepreneurship; and the National Advisory Council on Innovation and Entrepreneurship with the U.S. Department of Commerce, supporting creation of a national entrepreneurship strategy.

Did you know there’s a global movement to solve some of our world’s biggest problems by helping those with the greatest needs become self-sufficient? This movement is being led by all kinds of people and organizations: nonprofits, for profits, specialists, technicians, entrepreneurs, and investors. My guest expert on this episode, Dr. Courtney Cash, is one of those leading the way in these social entrepreneurship endeavors.
On this episode, Courtney discusses such things as (1) how market-based solutions and social enterprise are being used to help solve some of the world's biggest problems, (2) what factors are driving this trend, (3) how focusing on sending large sums of money to organizations or societies in need can actually be counterproductive, and (4) where the marriage of social enterprise and market-based solutions is taking hold around the world.

Now a bit about Courtney: Dr. Courtney Cash is President of the World Shoe Fund, where he served as the lead strategist in the development of the World Shoe social enterprise. Dr. Cash is also the founder of Simply Strategic Consulting, with almost 30 years of experience in nonprofit leadership, ministry, and consulting. His work has helped to expand the capacity of nonprofits to impact thousands of people in more than 50 countries through strategic planning, storytelling, donor engagement, and impact collaborations.
Dr. Cash is a seminary-trained nonprofit and ministry leader with degrees and certifications in education, leadership, and business. In 2018, he was awarded a Certificate of Achievement in Nonprofit Fund Development by the Mendoza College of Business of the University of Notre Dame. Dr. Cash also currently serves as Executive in Residence at the Berry College Campbell School of Business, where he mentors young entrepreneurs and teaches courses in social entrepreneurship and nonprofit management.
Currently, his research is focused on the development of multi-sectoral social enterprise models, market-based solutions for scaling the work of nonprofits, and the use of collective impact strategies to address major social challenges in local communities and larger international ecosystems.

That engine is called the bioeconomy, which while improving our global climate, is also creating lots of job, career, business, and investment opportunities. My guest expert on today’s episode is Dr. Nancy Connell, and she does a great job of informing us about the bioeconomy.
On this episode Nancy speaks about such things as (1) what is the bioeconomy, and what it's intended to do, (2) what initiatives and businesses are already making an impact in the bioeconomy space-- and she names many of them, and (3) the global extent of this trend, which is vast. Dr. Connell is Senior Scholar, Senior Scholar in International Networks and Collaboration in the Division of Policy and Global Affairs at the US National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine. She is also Professor Emerita at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School where she directed biosafety-level three laboratory research in bacterial pathogenesis and drug discovery from 1992 to 2018. She is past Professor at Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security (2018-2021).
With a PhD in microbial genetics from Harvard University, Dr. Connell studies the impact of biotechnology advances on biosecurity, biosafety, and biodefense, focusing on their impact the implementation of Biological Weapons Convention. She has long been involved in the development of regulatory policies associated with biocontainment work and dual-use research of concern.

It has to do with shipping freight and, in this case, with those who help to do that, otherwise known as freight brokers. My guest expert, Jason Bauch, owns businesses which focus on freight brokering.

Phil has traveled the world, selling and making connections with the biggest and best in the pet industry.
As the largest volume pet product manufacturer’s representative in the pet industry for many years, Phil Cooper represented many large and small firms building a wide range of pet items in all categories. He worked with some of the founders of the pet industry, building large pet brands. He has been owned, turned-around, and launched many pet companies, including Inoby’s Pet Products, a division of Yammanuchi Pharmaceutical, Munchkin/Bamboo Inc., The Brinkmann Corp., Phillips Pet Supply/K-Line, Hydor, Pets International LTD, Resco and iClean Dog Wash. Revenue ranges were from $1 million to $350 million and many were startups.
Phil is well known worldwide in the pet industry and has won many awards, including The Gold Circle Award from The Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council. He has held Board seats on The Western World Pet Supply Association (now WPA), PIJAC Australia, and was a Founding Member of The Pet Care Trust.
He founded and owns a LinkedIn Group “Pet Industry Sales Resources,” which is a networking group helping to put job seekers and job providers together with experienced pet salespeople. He also is a strong supporter of the Pet Advisory Council.

Hi everyone.
Did you know that buildings are responsible for 40% of greenhouse gas emissions, and that of all the buildings that will exist in 2040, 2/3 already exist today? Well it turns out, that creates enormous opportunities for those who want to remove the carbon from those buildings. My guest expert, Owen Barrett, serial entrepreneur, and founder and president of Rayven, speaks with me about these opportunities and much more on this episode.

Since earning a bachelor’s degree in finance, cutting his teeth in the financial industry, and earning a master’s degree in environmental science and management, Owen’s been on a professional rampage, pushing complacency and bureaucracy aside, and decarbonizing our economy at an impressive rate. Owen’s a three-time founder in the clean tech space, with one successful exit.
As a Global Energy Manager for a Fortune 500 company for three years, Owen implemented $60 million of clean technology. Combining his experience in fuel cells, solar PV, energy storage, LED lighting, and HVAC optimization, Owen left to launch lumeo, a niche energy service company. Within three years, lumeo hit eight figures in revenue and helped forty school districts implement energy efficiency and renewable energy.
After a successful exit from lumeo, and nearly a decade in the clean technology industry, Owen started ZNE Capital and pivoted to buying commercial real estate for the purpose of decarbonizing it. In just three years, Owen acquired and partially decarbonized $96M of multifamily properties.
While ZNE Capital proves to have a successful business model, the rampant inauthenticity within the institutional impact investing space made it challenging for ZNE Capital to make impact at scale. Owen founded Rayven to decarbonize existing buildings at scale.
