  • Great way to find new music to listen to!
    Oct 27, 2017
Gregg obviously does a lot of work searching out new bands and it shows. He consistently finds things that are new or you may have missed, while also being able to mix in some "old favorites" as it were. He has a wide range of tastes, allowing him to showcase many styles of music and do theme shows. For example, he covers just about every holiday with an episode, as well as doing stuff like an all metal episode. He also keeps things fresh by bringing in a wide variety of guests, which is a nice touch. He even features quite a few local podcasters, so you'll find out about new shows and new music to get! He also somehow gets a new episode out every week; I honestly don't know where he finds the time to discover enough music to do that, but there you go. Yes, it can be occasionally sloppy or have mic levels not mixed perfectly, but it's never to the point where it becomes hard to listen to. Great job and great podcast. Go get it, especially if you're in need of new music to listen to!
  • Amazingly well put together and researched show, with a fantastic host

If you have any interest in history, this is the show to get. Some may complain that they don't release shows quickly enough, but with the amount of research that goes into them (and their sheer length), it's amazing that they put out as many as they do. Dan does a great job as a host/narrator and shows an astounding breadth of knowledge. He also brings you into the topic by relating it to modern times or giving you an existential question to ponder. Another good part of it is that they choose a wide range of topics, rather than focusing solely on one area or time period. Want to discuss the Cuban Missile Crisis? It's there. Genghis Khan? Yep. The rise of the Greeks? Sure, why not? I'm hoping one day for a series on New Zealand history/British colonization, and while I won't hold my breath, I know it's possible because of the many topics covered. Go get this show now!
  • Truly America's favorite podcast

Great show. Josh and Ben are terrible people...in the best possible way. You never know what these guys will talk about (or what triggers Josh's brain), but that's the fun. Braindead Trivia is a good segment that they wisely always include. Of course, it's not complete without the drink reviews from the "Kings of Drink Mountain" (even if Josh gives the same review pretty much every show). A lot like Mike and Tom Eat Snacks (which is high praise, they're the best). If you like one, you'll likely enjoy the other. Also, fair warning: the language is pretty rough, definitely don't play it out loud unless you're looking to get fired/expelled.
  • Honestly the best podcast out there
    Jun 28, 2017
MATES is the best. All faithful viewers can testify to its greatness. It's a shame they'll go for literally years between episodes, but they're always worth the wait. The clementine, very cherry pudding, and Liebniz biscuits episodes are among the many standouts. Fair warning, it has some rough language, so maybe don't blast it in the office.

Ended just as it hit its stride

This podcast had a great premise, but struggled to live up to it in the early going. Both Michaels (Showalter and Ian Black) are funny guys, but you could tell they were still feeling things out in the early going. As the show went on, they found their footing in the premise (no spoilers, but it's obvious) and it got better and better. For example, they spend one episode talking about how they are going to discuss a topic, but then never actually get into it. Brilliant. Definitely worth a listen if you like dry comedy, but go in knowing that it can be uneven.
