We've come a long way in understanding autism since scientist and inventor Temple Grandin was first diagnosed with it back in the 1950s. And that's thanks in large part to her advocacy and research. But at age 75, Grandin says that despite our gains in embracing neurodiversity, too many "visual thinkers" like her are being let down by education systems that put too much stress on algebra, and too little on shop class. For the better part of her life, Maureen Beck has been climbing her way into the record books as a two-time world paraclimbing champion and an eight-time undefeated American champion.
