This week, The Long Shot welcomes on one of our favorite players in the NBA, TJ McConnell. TJ and Duncan share a lot in common… both transferred to high major programs in college, both were undrafted, and both just signed big contracts in the off-season. The guys cover TJ’s journey through the NBA, how he differentiates himself on the court, what it’s like to get a triple double with steals, what his pre-draft workouts looked like, and more.
They also have an honest discussion about what it’s like to go from the “underdog” to someone who signed a big contract, how you keep an edge on your shoulder, and what TJ leans on outside of basketball to stay grounded. Finally, the guys talk about the “Process” Sixers, who TJ wishes to share a glass of wine with in the NBA, and the time he got mistaken as a coach.
Before the conversation, Duncan and Davis tease their upcoming live show, break down the Jokic/Morris altercation, reflect on Duncan’s favorite post-game interview, and more!

This week the podcast moves from the hardwood to the gridiron as the guys sit down with one of the best recent underdog stories in the NFL. Taylor Heinicke was out of professional football a year ago and finishing his master’s degree at Old Dominion when he got a call from The Washington Football Team to be their “emergency COVID practice player.” After some injuries and roster changes, Taylor found himself starting in the NFC Wildcard game just a few months later. Now he is the starting quarterback in Washington and just inked a new contract that will keep him there for the next two seasons.
The guys discuss his story, finding a rhythm as a consistent starter, the pressure & responsibility that comes with being a quarterback, and how you find comfort and confidence in that role. They also talk about his career at Old Dominion, how a smaller school benefitted him as an athlete, and why so many undrafted guys seem to find success in the NFL.
Then the conversation shifts into the psyche of playing football, the amount of film that Taylor watches, how you “unlock” your mind during games, and dealing with adversity with so much time in-between games.
To wrap up the convo, the guys talk NFL dress code, meditation, float tanks, and favorite music.
Before all of that, Duncan and Davis talk about the red-hot Miami Heat, Duncan reflects on getting some shade thrown at him from his teammates, Davis tests Duncan’s IQ, they discuss what it’s like for NBA players at the airport, and more!

This week, The Long Shot is joined by senior ESPN writer and NBA guru Zach Lowe. Zach began his career in journalism covering crime & government and now is widely considered one of the brightest and best reporters that the NBA has to offer. The conversation begins with discussing his background, how those first jobs helped shape him as a reporter, and his unique style of writing.
Then, the guys shift to basketball and Week 1 Overreactions in the NBA: Do the Lakers have too much to try and figure out? How much trouble are the Pelicans in? Are the Bulls legit? Zach also shares his ‘worst take ever,’ what it’s like to deal with angry fan bases, and where he thinks the future of the NBA is headed.
Finally, Zach gives his list of underrated players that he would want on his team and then Duncan and Zach have an honest discussion about players who are considered to be on “good contracts” and how that really means they are underpaid.
Before all of that, Duncan and Davis give their weekly takeaways which include the rolling Knicks, Michigan football, their opinions on the NBA 75 list, and debut their new “Long Thoughts” segment. All that and more in this awesome episode!

This week, The Long Shot is incredibly fortunate to sit down with one of the rising stars in sports journalism, Malika Andrews. At just 26 years old, Malika has already become one of the youngest to ever lead sideline reporting for the NBA Finals, the youngest ever to host the NBA Trophy Ceremony, and she now hosts ESPN’s new daily show “NBA Today.” She sits down with the guys to talk about her meteoric rise in the last two years, her background in journalism, how she views her role and responsibility in reporting, and dealing with criticism. She also gives us a breakdown of what we can expect from NBA Today, picks her teams to look out for in the NBA this year (with some pandering), and much more.

When he was in high school, Pat Connaughton was offered a couple million dollars from the New York Yankees to forgo college and join their minor league system. He turned it down. Instead, he chose to continue pursuing his dream of playing basketball, went on to play both baseball and basketball at The University of Notre Dame, and now is an NBA Champion. Duncan and Pat grew up together, played for the same AAU program in New England, and are close friends to this day, so Duncan got to witness that entire journey first-hand.
In this fantastic sit-down, the guys talk about what a new season is like coming off of a championship, Milwaukee battling adversity in the playoffs, the ‘revenge series’ against the Heat, and how the media narrative changes for Giannis after becoming a champion. They then dive into Pat’s impact on winning games, his defensive approach, and favorite in-game dunks.
The discussion then turns to Pat’s early days as a baseball standout, being a dual-athlete in college, getting drafted in both the MLB and NBA, and wraps up with Pat’s off-court endeavors, including his real estate business and foundation supporting youth sports.
Before all of that, Duncan and Davis breakdown the Ben Simmons & Kyrie Irving off-season drama, talk about the new Wilson basketball and why it is so different from Spalding, and Duncan shouts out his Boston Red Sox.

This week the guys are joined by former Arizona Wildcat, former teammate of Duncan’s, and current Atlanta Hawk, Solomon Hill. They talk about what makes the Heat organization so special, Solo’s ability to be a trusted voice in any locker room, and the friendships he has made during his time in the NBA.
Duncan and Solo then reflect on the Orlando bubble, making a run to the Finals, and Solo explains how the Hawks’ run to the Eastern Conference Finals last year helped the young core in Atlanta grow.
The guys then shift to talk about the pressure that comes with getting a “public payday” and how it changes things for a player when they earn a big contract. They have an incredible, honest conversation about how money is viewed in the NBA by fans, franchises, and between players.
Lastly, the conversation turns to Solo’s activity on Twitter (he might be the best tweeter in the NBA) and his role in pushing social justice initiatives forward.
Before that conversation, Duncan and Davis discuss the Heat’s first preseason game, tease a new segment, give some advice to fans who want to learn some high-level basketball lingo, and more.

Finally, the guys have a candid conversation about NBA Media day this week and the circus surrounding COVID vaccinations around the league.

Georges Niang had all the accolades in high school, and racked up plenty more at Iowa State. Welcome to the inaugural episode of The Long Shot! You all know Duncan Robinson as the Miami Heat sharpshooter, but his range extends well beyond the basketball court. Duncan has always had a passion for storytelling, so he and long-time friend Davis Reid are now stepping into the host chair to deliver The Long Shot podcast. It's a place where fans can come and hear the stories of how some of today's biggest leaders in sports, entertainment, business and more defied the odds to create their own success stories. And what better way to begin this journey than with a pod dedicated to examining the long shot story of Duncan himself. They also take you inside their plans for the show moving forward, highlighting some segments that will appear weekly as well as digging into some NBA news and notes. While you’re stuck with just them this week, next week’s episode will begin a run of guests that will have you coming back for more each time. So sit back and enjoy... The Long Shot is here.
