I often say, “Humans love to put other people up on a pedestal of praise and then move them over to the cross of crucifixion when they see their humanity.”

Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we’re talking about how people like to build others up onto a pedestal of praise and then when they eventually discover that other person’s humanness, weaknesses or even failures - those same people love to yank that pedestal out from under them.

It's like there’s this expectation that because someone is good at something, whether that be science, acting, sports, writing, business, or music - that they’re then automatically predisposed to be good at all things straight across the board.

That they are never going to make a mistake or God forbid, show the unhealed version of themselves.

In people’s worshipping of internet heroes, influencers and “gurus” - it’s easy to forget that they are human. They are not God or even otherworldly. In many ways, they’re no different than people without the big platforms.

Like us, they have their own insecurities, character flaws and unhealed places that could also use some inner work.

As human beings, we should do our best to praise one another, love one another, and build each other up... and I have no problem with this practice of helping, supporting, cheerleading and lifting someone up!

However, it’s a totally different thing to put somebody up on a pedestal and then toss our common sense out the window - only to then be disappointed because we find out oh, yeah, they're human.

The reality is if we keep building people up on these wicked high pedestals and holding them to these impossible standards; when they're that high, there's only one place to go, and that’s down.

It can be wicked easy to get attached to the idea that relationships are supposed to last forever – and that people and how we relate to one another are supposed to stay the same.

This notion gets reinforced in our minds, because our brains really like familiarity and don’t particularly love change.

When it comes to human beings and relationships - things remaining the same - is not a reasonable expectation because like trees, we’re all destined to grow.

Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we’re talking about how people are kind of like trees and the different relationships they find themselves in.

Some relationships weather the toughest storms, bending but not breaking. Others provide support, shade or nourishment for a time before falling away.

But all are built on the foundation, the roots, that started with what we learned in our earliest home life with our family.

If you were to look at the people in your own life - what kind of “trees” would you discover?

Do you have strong, stable Redwoods? Or are they a low bush that's never going to grow and it may be time to uproot and move on from them?

As with trees, sometimes relationships wither away, but it doesn't mean they didn't serve a purpose when they came into our life.

Like trees, relationships grow and change with each passing season with some remaining long term like evergreens and others moving on to grow alongside someone else.

So, take a look around and ask yourself, “Who am I standing in the forest of this life with and are there any that I may have outgrown that it is time to say goodbye to? Plus, what kind of tree am I being to others?”

In the world today, you just can’t be on the internet and more specifically, on social media, and not see the way that people try to come for one another.

There’s so many people with going around spewing their mean, hateful and ignorant comments all over everyone and everything.

Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we’re talking about the cheap shots that are being thrown around online from behind a keyboard or the safety of a screen.

Brutal and unnecessary words being used to try to tear down the success and happiness of others by the unhealed authors behind them.

It’s easy to feel tough when people think they’re anonymous, using a fake name, and live so far away, that they’ll probably never have to meet the ones they’re going out of their way to hurt.

As individuals, we have to stop this behavior. We have to start calling ourselves on our own BS and be willing to look at, who and how we are really being.

Are we choosing to operate from a place of fear – or - live from a place of love?

Our life experience will be greatly changed based on that daily, moment by moment choice.

When we’re trying to create good, new, positive, or helpful things in the world - we sometimes find it hard to remain consistent and keep the momentum going.

We might find ourselves in a pattern of starting and stopping again and again and again - which can lead to frustration and feelings of failure.

Love isn't just reserved for romantic, sexual, or intimate relationships. Love is all around us and one of the most powerful things you can do is learn to love yourself.

I'm not talking in some big grandiose, egocentric way, where you decide you are “special”.

I’m talking about truly learning how to be in relationship with yourself - with both your ego personality / the small s / self and your Higher / capital S / Self.

If we think, say, feel, believe or do something enough times - it creates a habitual well-worn groove within our subconscious mind.

And if we get into a groove - that is no longer groovy, we can create a well-worn path that can easily become a rut that we feel stuck in.

Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we’re talking about getting stuck in these ways of thinking and being - where we want to change - but find it difficult or overwhelming to do so.

This can leave us feeling like we’re lazy, lacking, not smart enough, kinda’ worthless, and wondering what the heck is wrong with me?

Which can lead to feelings of defeat… and as a result, a lot of us will just give up and stop trying, because it feels too hard to change.

“There are no mistakes, only happy little accidents” is a famous line by beloved artist, painter, teacher and TV personality, Bob Ross.

But when I was watching him the other day, he stopped me in my tracks with this other golden gem of wisdom - “Learn to work with what happens.”

WOAH!!!

These 6 powerful words are not only applicable for the painters, artists and creatives he was teaching to, but for human beings overall!

And when I heard them, it had all my brain cells firing at once - because it fell right in line with what I believe for myself and what I teach others.

Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we’re talking about the stories each of us have, tell and carry. Stories shaped by our experiences, installed by our interpretations, built by our beliefs, and crafted alongside the identities we’ve created for ourselves.

Often we’re not writing these stories in our own favor and we instead become attached to the retelling and re-traumatizing of ourselves again, and again.

So much of the work I do with others is about taking those old habituated stories, releasing the meaning that we've assigned to them, and rewriting them through a different lens - or as I like to say “transforming that old story, into your glory.”

That is what I believe Bob was distilling down with his statement, “learn to work with what happens.” He's saying learn to use whatever happens on the canvas, and what greater surface do we have to work and create on than the canvas of our lives!

It’s normal and natural as kids to look for those external social cues that tell us which behaviors are good or bad - what is encouraged and what is discouraged .

In fact, we were constantly being conditioned and molded as children growing up by how our parents, society, teachers, coaches, priests, siblings, and our friends were responding to us.

If we aren’t careful, we might continue this habit of looking outside of ourselves for signs of belonging and approval. And instead of maturing into adults with secure self-love - we’ll find ourselves desperately looking to others in order to know if we're “good enough”.

Today on The Karen Kenney Show, we’re talking about the need for external validation or that ego desire to be “special” - that my friends and I like to call ‘wanting cookies’!

If you listen to this epsiode, and you're wondering, “Do I do that? Do I feel like I need all the cookies?”

Let me just say this; it's also totally normal to want to be told, “Hey, you did great,” and have you or your work acknowledged. In fact, it’s healthy in relationships to support, cheer and congratulate each other sometimes.

Where it starts to become wicked imbalanced - and we find ourselves unable to regulate - or see our own self worth - is if we don’t keep that insatiable need in check.

One of the strongest things that we need is our own love language. That muscle needs to grow and get stronger as we mature. That way, if somebody else validates us, it's just icing on the cake - and we don't have to go chasing all the cookies.

I always say, “If everyone likes you, you're doing it wrong” - because what that tells me is you’re probably ‘Cirque du Soleil-ing’ yourself into some version of you that’s trying to be palatable for everybody… and that’s just not possible.

Some people aren’t going to like you because they just don't like you and that's just how it is. What matters here, dear listener, is that you like and love yourself!
