HuntFishTravel Podcast Ep222 - Lake Trout Fishing in Ontario with Adam Kaufman of Free to Prowl Outdoors

Adam was interviewed on “Okayest Fisher” podcast going to be at the Open Season Sportsman’s Expo at the Kalahari.

We chat about my 3 state ice fishing trip last year, and about my Lake of the Woods trip this past January.

Free to Prowl Outdoors’s mission is to inspire hunting and fishing. He talks about how he spent two and a half weeks living in his truck fishing all over Canada, and how his explanation to the border patrol was a bit dicey. Plus he explains how he kept warm sleeping in the back of his truck.

We talk about his connections to a resort in Thunder Bay. He talks about how much a non-resident license costs, daily possessions and baits that were successful.

Then we talk about what we both have coming up this year.

“New Mexico Elk and Navigating the Draw Process with Jordan Christensen from The Draw”

Jordan Christensen from The Draw stops by for an EXTRA long episode. Normally I’d break this apart into 2 or 3 parts to keep the under 30-minute algorithm happy, but the information imparted was so intertwined there was no way I could break it apart. So go work out for an hour and a half, head up to ice camp and listen along because this information packed episode is epic.

Jordan shares his rise in the outdoor industry, and his journey from outfitter to taxidermist to hunting consultant for Cabelas.

We talk about permit draws and lotteries and how he helps other hunters navigate the process via The Draw.

One of the states and species we highlighted in depth was Elk hunting in New Mexico, he explains the difference between a $750 DIY OTC draw tag vs the $10,000 available landowner tags. And which one is right for you.

He talks about what Guided Pools even are and how it works.

Then we chat about how We are the Draw service works and the costs you incur by using them. (which is surprisingly low.)

We talk about drawing tags, cost of, odds and probably a ton of informational tidbits I’m forgetting about several states and species.

And in the end I ask him, “I have no idea what I want to hunt or where, what do you recommend?” And his answer surprised me. The state and specie(s) suggested were extremely doable.

HuntFishTravel Podcast 220 - Ireland and my Irish Fishing Trip That Never Was & Trail Camera Q&A with Trent Marsh from SpyPoint Pt 2

Trent Marsh from SpyPoint joins me on this week’s episode, we talk about the new SpyPoint Flex that they debuted last summer. I’ve been playing with them on my deer hunting lease and I have a bunch of questions. I don’t hold back in expressing some minor frustrations not unique to the company, but to trail cameras in general.

Trent takes the time to break down the most common issues with using a trail camera, specifically SpyPoint and how to fix them.

Questions such as: “I change the batteries, and now it’s not sending photos”, “do SD cards in a cellular trail camera get full, or do the transmitted images get deleted once they are sent”, “for the Flex, I requested the HD version, but there is a problem, and it’s unavailable”, “why are my trail camera photos crappy or blurry compared to all these photos other people post”, “should I just go buy rechargeable batteries since it seems like all I do is change them out”, “my cellphone has 5G in the spot my camera is, but the camera isn’t sending – what’s the deal”, “how often should I even be going into the woods to check/fix/battery the cameras”?

HuntFishTravel Podcast 219 - Ireland and my Irish Fishing Trip That Never Was & Trail Camera Q&A with Trent Marsh from SpyPoint Pt 1

Trent Marsh from Spypoint joins me on this week’s episode, we talk about the Ireland trip. We were on an EF Go Ahead Tour group of about 30, that visited Cork, Dublin and Galway.

We chat about how much we enjoyed the trip, the differences in the regions, group tour pros and cons, and I think you’ll be surprised at our different opinion in one of the regions.

And then we share how both fishing charters Dublin Fishing Trips and Tours and Howth Fishing, scheduled and then GHOSTED me when it was time to actually go fishing.

If you don’t want to visit Ireland after listening to us chat about it, you’re nuts.

HuntFishTravel Podcast 218 - Sue Tidwell - Cries of the Savanna and an eye-opening adventure in Africa

On this episode, I'm interviewing Sue Tidwell, author of self-published Cries of the Savanna, whose goal as a non-hunter is to make people fall in love with Africa.

The book covers her terrifying, amazing, wonderful and scary adventure at Masimba Camp in Tanzania as a non-hunter. (She is not apposed to hunting). Tanzania is a remote area where the people welcome the hunters who give them the meat. The people never waste anything. They lack protein in their diet so they welcome the money (which goes for anti poaching) and meat the hunters supply. She explains about how hunting protects the habitat. They do not have the tools to hunt with, so they poison animals or set traps. She tells a story of brothers watching their herd who are attacked and his 2 brothers are eaten in from of him. She also writes about Lilian a Tanzian game scout who verifies all of her information in the book to be correct.

It was a fascinating conversation about hunting Africa as well as the struggles a self-published author faces when going forward with a project like this.
