In this season of protest against the brutality many people of color face from police, it is only right to shed a light on the many victims of inner-city violence, particularly in Chicago. Please, don’t mistake my message as getting on a soapbox, spouting the “black-on-black” crime rhetoric. The truth is, I want us to care about us. Our enemy is not only the subset of law enforcement who abuse their power- but it is also the cowards who are robbing our children of a future.
The weeks continue to get more and more deadly. In fact, Chicago has surpassed the most deaths on a single day since they have kept records of this statistic. The last day of May recorded 18 homicides, the most in 5 decades. In fact, throughout May, 2020, there were over 1100 victims of gun violence. Eleven hundred in just the first five months of the year. If history is our guide, there will be an increase in homicides and shootings as the weather gets warmer.

These two were Mormons and aspiring filmmakers. Most of the time they documented the day’s events with a camcorder. Today was no different- this morning, they aimed the camera at Cassie and told her to say “Hi”.

As podcasters, we have a platform and duty to speak up and call out injustice. and amplify the voices of black podcasters that deserve more recognition. Racism is prevalent in all industries; the media who under-report on black victims to the justice system which routinely fails black victims. In this collaborative episode, we document black history and current events with the voices of those who have lived through it.

We are at a crossroads- the public has overwhelmingly signaled that WE WANT CHANGE! The old system of racism and profiling is old news. It's one thing to desire equality and something else entirely to achieve it. Today, Barack Obama gave us the cornerstone to affecting real change. Some of us knew this and just needed a reminder. For others, this will be the first time you hear how we move forward AFTER the protests. This will be work- nothing good ever comes easy. After seeing the national and global response to these most recent injustices, I know you are up for it. Let me know how YOU will be actively implementing change in your judiciary.

Well, today’s story is kind of similar to that feeling of familiarity with a rising star. Set in the 1960s, the journey begins at a time of civil unrest in the United States. The Black population, mostly descendants of slaves, continued to face persecution and discrimination. A lot has been overcome since then, although we still have quite a bit of work to do. But this is a story of a people rising above inequality by any means necessary. This is about women using their God-given talent as a means to bring the nation together. It’s about kidnapping. It’s about fraud. And it’s about redemption. Spoiler alert- nobody dies but one woman learns what it means to live.

It was October 1961 and they were in front of an ice cream shop in San Francisco. He became fixated on the teen, but Van Best knew he was far too old to be trying to court Judy. Worse, she had a less than ideal home life- her father was said to be abusive which made her a prime target for a guy who knew how to say all the right things.. Van Best did continue his pursuit and the two began sneaking to see one another for months. The couple was soon found out, and the whole city was disturbed to know a pedophile was operating and grooming young girls in their area.

I have been following the allegations for a number of years, so this is hardly a new issue, but it is gaining media attention due to the sheer number of lawsuits that are being levied against the religion.
I am particularly interested in following this story because I was once married to a member of the religion (my son's dad) and I did study the Bible with my former mother in law and spouse. I had very strong opinions then, but I felt as if I wasn’t giving the religion a fair shot due to my Baptist upbringing. I have long since re-evaluated my thoughts on ALL organized religion and as the stories pile up I am glad that I never was indoctrinated into the Witnesses.

Of course, being a guest of any prison comes with a total lack of privacy. The calls in and out are recorded and we get to be a fly on the wall when Aaron spoke with his agent, his mom Teri, his cousin Tonya, and his fiancee Shayanna. The calls that were featured in the series offers a little insight into the mindset of Hernandez. They also give us a glimpse of the relationships that he had with these people.

Dennis is kind of a local legend in football so there’s no surprise that his boys were introduced to the sport early. Dennis is described as a “man’s man” very hyper-masculine. He was strict on his boys. Known around as the King, DJ and Aaron were his heirs apparent. They may as well had been William and Harry as far as he was concerned. They were being primed to step in his oversized footprints.

Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/true-crime-by-the-book/exclusive-contentLet me tell you, growing up in the ‘90s was something else. The societal rules were far more blurred than they are today- and I think that it is our responsibility to call out bad behavior to improve our relationships with one another. I said that because I argue with friends on this point regularly. I graduated from high school in 1991. When I was in school it wasn’t unusual for students and teachers to be romantically involved. I never had an inappropriate relationship, but I was propositioned. Looking back with hindsight, I talked to one of my girlfriends about how garbage it was that these teachers abused the trust and took advantage of those young girls. She argued that she had been involved with a teacher and she had pursued the relationship. And you know what? It’s normal for young people to develop a crush on some adults. The thing that bothers me is that these adults didn’t show the restraint to avoid acting on those urges.

She moved to Bellevue to study computers and was working as a telemarketer. She shared an apartment with a friend.Mary Anne had a strict Christian upbringing, and she was kind of relishing her newfound freedom. She began frequenting a night spot- not the Black Angus, but a place called Papagayo's.There she would sip drinks with friends, chat with other partiers and dance the night away.On Friday, June 23, 1990, she got dressed and hit the club with a couple of her girlfriends.Liquor flowed, music played, and dancing ensued. In fact, Mary Anne had personally requested MC Hammer's song "U Can't Touch This" at least 5 times. She was having a lot of fun and I'm pretty sure that more than a few of you can relate to the club scene in the 90s.

In Charmer, we meet Russell as a boy about the same age as I was when I learned that monsters live among us. He was wise beyond his years. He would talk to anyone. His conversation was so mature that it was easy to forget you were talking to a child. He was cautious as well- he’d get a person to talk and talk without disclosing much about himself. He was guarded that way. His family was among only a handful of blacks who lived on Mercer Island. He lived with his mom Joyce, a college professor; his stepfather, a dentist; and his baby sister. From the outer appearance, he seemed to have an ideal home life. Upon further investigation, we soon learn that George was a neglected and lonely boy.
He never had any really close friends as a youth. He was more like an accessory- kinda like TV shows that have a white ensemble cast and one black guy on the periphery of the group. George was always on the periphery.

The pitch went like this: Chris Butler, a retired cop, ran a private investigator firm in Concord, California. His business had a fascinating angle—his firm was staffed entirely by soccer moms.
In fact, Butler employed PI Super Moms: attractive, organized, smart, and trained in investigative techniques, self-defense, and weaponry. This American Life host Ira Glass described them as “MILF: Charlie’s Angels.”
When this story came across Pete Crooks’s desk when he was working at Diablo magazine in 2010, he was instantly hooked. He’d heard a little bit about Butler and his super moms in the news; they’d been featured in People magazine and on Dr. Phil. What Butler’s publicist was offering was too tantalizing to pass up: an opportunity to ride along with Butler and a few of his sexy PIs as they prepared to start filming a reality TV show.
He soon found himself deep in the underbelly of fake sting operations, wannabe celebrities, police corruption, drug-dealing, reality television, double-crossing employees, and more twists and turns than a dozen crime thrillers.
