Just after 4 AM on July 8, 2015, a call came into Hampton County emergency dispatch. A driver spotted a body in the center of a remote stretch of highway known as Sandy Run Road. The body belonged to 19-year-old Stephen Smith, a nursing student at nearby Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College. There was nothing to suggest a vehicle had been involved in Stephen’s death, yet a hit and run would become the sheriff’s department’s official determination. The story didn’t sit well with Stephen’s friends, his family, or the South Carolina Highway Patrol. The circumstances begged several questions: Why would Hampton County make such a rush to judgment regarding the cause of death? Who were they trying to protect? And who was responsible for killing Stephen Smith? It would take eight years, and the widely publicized capital murder trial of Alex Murdaugh, for South Carolina authorities to admit that what happened that night in Lowcountry was no traffic accident, it was a homicide that many believe could be tied to the Murdaughs, Hampton County’s Royal Family.

Since the 1880s, immigrants from all over the globe have arrived in the United States hoping to attain a

better quality of life, the American Dream. Like so many immigrants before them, Lily and Ben Chin

wanted their son Vincent to have more opportunities than he may have had in their native China. In the

1970s and 1980s, however, tensions were high between Japanese and American automobile

manufacturers, and that discord extended beyond the auto manufacturing plants. It was at this time that

27-year-old Vincent Chin found himself in peril on the streets of Motor City. His story reminds us why this

landmark case is still relevant more than 40 years later.

While in her 20s and 30s, Cape Cod native Christa Worthington built a successful career in fashion journalism. She rubbed elbows with elite designers, wrote editorials for widely-respected publications like Cosmopolitan, and cycled through high fashion cities like Paris and London. When feelings for another person run deep, people are often inclined to see the best in that person. It’s not uncommon for unsettling behavior to be excused rather than seeing it as a warning sign and acting on it. But this idealism can put someone in harm’s way without them realizing it until it’s much too late. When Nicole Montalvo went missing in October 2019, investigators quickly learned that a lot was going on in her personal life and sadly, her circumstances were not all that unusual. Nicole’s disturbing murder led to three arrests and one trial.

It was a Tuesday night at the Chuck E. Cheese in Aurora, Colorado when Margaret Kohlberg, 50, Sylvia

Crowell, 19, Ben Grant, 17, Colleen O’Connor, also 17, and 20-year-old Bobby Stephens were working

the late shift. They didn’t know it, but a man with a gun was hiding in the bathroom. When the mass

shooting was over, four people lay dead and a fifth badly wounded. The shooter’s total haul was less than

$1,600 and the entire manic episode lasted less than five minutes. Most shocking . . . the mass murderer

was only 19 years old.

On the morning of May 26, 1990, Marlene Warren was finishing breakfast with her son and his friends when she heard a knock on their front door. The 40-year-old mother of two wasn’t expecting anyone but answered the door anyway. She was greeted by someone wearing a clown costume and white face paint, clutching a flower arrangement and foil balloons. Marlene was delighted at the cheerful sight. Then, suddenly, everything changed. Moments later the clown pulled out a gun, aimed it at her face, and pulled the trigger. The bizarre attack left the community puzzled and horrified, at a time when authorities were ill-equipped to find answers.

It seems like everyone is wearing an Apple Watch or FitBit to count steps and reach health goals. In the case we examine in this episode, the victim’s wearable technology was actually used as a tool to try to solve her murder. Two days before Christmas in 2015, 39-year-old mother of two Connie Dabat was found shot to death in her Connecticut home. As detectives scrambled for answers, a small device worn on her hip was key in learning the truth about her death. Sheree Warren left her job in Salt Lake City on a mild October evening in 1985. She told a coworker she was headed to meet her estranged husband, Charles Warren, at a car dealership. But she never made it, Sheree vanished. When her car mysteriously surfaced weeks later, hundreds of miles away in Las Vegas, no one could say how it got there.

When a young mother disappears under unexplained circumstances, police always turn suspicious eyes towards the husband. And although there was distrust around Charles Warren, he wasn’t the only suspect when Sheree went missing.
