Submit ReviewA tribute/re-airing for Paul’s friend Charlie who passed away last week after years of battling his demons. Charlie led an astoundingly painful life especially in regard to his mother (schizophrenia, depression), father (workaholic, hoarder), and sister (drug addict). He describes his descent into drugs (crack), emotionally damaged women and violence before finding the key to understanding his behavior.

Why, oh why would you choose to go on vacation with your family when every other time it's been a train wreck? Rich, one of Paul’s support group friends (and previous guest), wanted to talk through his trouble accepting that his family won't change, the issues he’s been having from it, and he and Paul decided to record the conversation. They discuss validation seeking, unhealthy dating patterns, and how it all circles back to his family. Oh and the date he went on that redefines WTF.

Yes Bill W. is his real name and he has been helping Paul for 19 years; inspiring him, helping him, making him laugh and giving him the truth when he needs to hear it. They talk about surrendering to things we're powerless over, developing good habits -especially human connection- to battle our demons and his lingering "shoulda-coulda-wouldas" on a professional baseball career that was cut short. Oh and of course a little talk about staying up for 3 nights doing cocaine.

Originally recorded in 2011, the critically-acclaimed author of 6 books (most recently The Problem With Everything), columnist and blogger (@Meghan_Daum) talks with Paul about growing up and later rebelling in a household where music and academia were everything. She talks about the pressure of starting a writing career in Manhattan and living a real-life Devil Wears Prada nightmare, where the idea of even living in a rundown building in a bohemian neighborhood became unattainable. They talk about the epiphany of realizing her dreams were shallow, materialistic and unattainable, her move to Nebraska and the perspective and novel (The Quality of Life Report) that resulted. A great episode for people who have a critical inner voice that never shuts up. Meghan has written for The New Yorker, Harper’s and Vogue and has contributed to This American Life. She also hosts the podcast The Unspeakable and is a co-host on another called A Special Place In Hell. She recently launched a new project, creating an intellectual community for freethinking women called The Unspeakeasy.

Originally recorded and aired in 2011 Nadereh’s story is sadly all too timely today. Nadereh (@NaderehShe) is a former Marxist revolutionary who fled her native Iran (while 6 months pregnant) after the capture and execution of her husband in the 1988 prisoner massacre where over 5000 were killed regardless of time served. Nadereh and her husband were the first wave of the killing, oppression and displacement that continues to this day in Iran by the same government that is in power today killing those battling for basic women's rights. She eventually settled in San Francisco and became a nurse at a psychiatric hospital. The fact that we never even discuss what she has experienced as a nurse in two hours speaks to the amount of drama she has endured. Survivor’s guilt, betrayal, loss, discrimination and poverty have not stopped her. A truly incredible story that is still unfolding.

From The Loudest Girl in the World: What it Means to be on the Autism Spectrum
I'm sharing a special preview of a new podcast, The Loudest Girl in the World. For years, journalist and podcast host Lauren Ober wasn’t all that jazzed about herself. She was always getting in trouble, she had a lot of sensory issues and her anxiety felt off the charts. And then, she found out why — she was autistic. The Loudest Girl in the World tells the story of Lauren’s journey to understand what it means to be on the autism spectrum and how to live life as a newly diagnosed autistic person. You can hear the full episode, and more from The Loudest Girl in the World at https://podcasts.pushkin.fm/loudest?sid=mental.

Originally aired in 2015. Sold by her mother to a pedophile ring led by powerful politicians and aristocrats in her native Belgium, Anneke’s story is about more than just survival. She talks about the ways her PTSD affects her life but also about the empathy she learned at a young age that inspires her to teach yoga in prisons, especially fellow survivors of sex-trafficking. Anneke has a book out entitled Quest For Love: Memoir of a Child Sex Slave

This episode with @DaveHolmes was voted a listener favorite in 2012. Some people know Dave from MTV's Wanna Be a VJ contest, where he was runner-up, his podcast Homophilia or his work in Esquire, but few know his calm exterior often masks panic and anxiety. He and Paul bond over being raised Irish Catholic, hosting interstitial t.v. shows and other similarities. Dave talks about the minefield of coming out to a family with mixed views on gays, his oddly easy time with it in high school and difficult time in college. Paul reads survey responses related to the LGBT community, highlighting where America is at in seeing them as equals and how it makes them feel.

Originally aired in 2012 and voted a listener favorite, @anyLaurie16, The NY Times Bestselling author (of Shitty Mom, and Dead People Suck), tv writer (Conan), standup (finalist on Last Comic Standing) and single Mom talks to Paul about the painful event that derailed her swimming aspirations and defined much of her late teens and twenties, before she eventually sought help. Voted as the listener's favorite from the second year of our podcast (2012), Dr. Jessica Zucker graces the show as our first mental health expert and she does not disappoint. We learn helpful tips in finding the right therapist, the benefits of it, and common pitfalls. We discuss her upcoming book about porn stars and what sex means to them. We talk about a listener’s harrowing experience with postpartum depression. And finally, Dr. Zucker lends a gentle hand in helping Paul to confront the most painful truth in his life; the lifelong patterns of abuse by his mentally unstable mother. They discuss sexual abuse of boys by female babysitters. Dr. Zucker is a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in women’s health, with a focus on reproductive and maternal mental health.
