Submit ReviewIt’s time for yet another mixtape in this round of Team Maed mixtapes, as our very own graphic designer and illustrating wizard Alika Gupta puts together her own playlist of Indian indie music she enjoys. As a visual person, she named her Maed Mixtape after a mythological creature she wanted to draw for the mixtape cover. Nothing wrong with playing to your strengths! Nonetheless, it gave us a mixtape of great music with beautiful cover art to go with it.

So, on this episode of Maed in India, we’re featuring the prolific percussionist and producer, Swarupa Ananth. She also performs 3 songs from her debut solo EP, Recomeçar, an ode to women!

Our Ladies Special is chugging along very nicely, and this episode is no different! We feature Assamese Soul-pop folk singer-songwriter Sampriti, who talks about instances of colourism she’s had to face in her life, landing a job as a performer on a cruise ship, and writing in Assamese coming to her naturally. Of course, she performs three songs in her signature style that marries Assamese lyrics to Afrobeat and jazz-pop!

We declare the 2023 edition of Maed in India’s Ladies Special open for your listening pleasure! It’s our annual celebration of women in independent music in India, and our theme this year goes back to our country’s musical roots. We’re featuring artists who showcase India’s rich heritage through their identity, regional language or music style. To get this show on the road we have singer-songwriter and music educator, Banat. She talks about growing up in a traditional Punjabi household playing harmonium and kirtans at the gurdwara, from becoming a lawyer to a musician, and we find out that she’s working on a Punjabi folk album. She also treats us to her renditions of three Punjabi folk songs!

It’s happening.
No, this isn’t a dream.
We can’t contain our excitement any longer.
We have two HUGE reasons to celebrate.
Mae has the iconic alt rock band Zero in the studio to celebrate 300 episodes of the show! And she’s even brought an old friend along with her too - Music Journalist, Co-founder of erstwhile NH7.in, Head of Red Bull Media House India, and #1 Zero superfan – Arjun S Ravi. They chat to Sidd, Warren, Bobby and Rajeev about their first i-Rock, about how these Dadar boys know each other, what their songs are really about (kinda) and how Zero once almost broke up. You also get to hear about how they got paid for a gig in sandwiches, a Europe tour that never happened because they weren’t “Indian enough”, using underwear as a pop filter, Buffy The Vampire slayer, leather chaps, and a whole lot more. You’ll also get to hear them perform a song that they’ve never recorded before right here on Maed in India.
Song List:
Mariachi (01:44 - 06:32)
Wish (34:09 - 38:50)
Take Me Away (1:10:18 - 1:15:19)
Zero is:

Warren Mendonsa on Guitars
