They also discuss some fun and interesting stories about the band before talking about their favorite songs and albums from The Who’s long discography. Apparently the TV series transmuted into a comic book! In episode 96, Chuck talks about Battle of the Planets! This animated TV series from the late 1970s is an adaptation of the Japanese animated (anime) series Gatchaman. Five young people, the members of G-Force, protect Earth from Zoltar and his evil forces from the planet Spectra! With one word—TRANSMUTE!—the members of G-Force gain cool suits, weapons, and vehicles to aid them in their battle! There have been a number of other adaptations of this series as well. Don’t say stage freeze, just do it. In episode 95, Chuck sits down with return guest Pat Nevis to talk about It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia! This show follows the wonderfully inappropriate misadventures of five lovable (?) characters as they try to get ahead in life (?). These pita sandwiches, or wraps, hold beef/lamb, pork, or chicken that is cooked on a vertical rotisserie. Then it’s topped with onions,  tomatoes, and tzatziki sauce. (and fries?) Don’t get caught up in the pronunciation! Chuck mentions a few examples of gyros in TV shows, and he also mentions a couple of his favorite places to get a gyro—that he misses. Bruce Lee had a style all his own! In episode 92, Chuck talks about Bruce Lee! Bruce Lee is considered by Chuck, and many others, to be the greatest martial artist of all time! Bruce died at the age of 32; and no, Muhammad Ali did not kill Bruce Lee—no matter what a past guest would have Chuck believe! Bruce Lee developed his own martial art, Jeet Kune Do! Bruce Lee is, perhaps, best known for his role as Kato on The Green Hornet television series and for starring in the greatest martial arts movie ever made—Enter the Dragon. Scott studied at the John Felice Rome Center—a campus of Loyola University Chicago! In episode 91, Chuck sits down with return guest Scott Glennon to talk about Rome! Scott was a study-abroad student in Rome! Italy’s capital has been around a long time; and there’s lots of history, in and around Rome, to explore. Vatican City is the smallest country in the world and is located wholly within Rome! (See what Chuck did there?) Roman cuisine, and Italian cuisine in general, is all about freshness and not about drowning pasta in sauce! It sounds like Scott would sum up Rome with one word: spectacular! Oaxaca is a state in southwestern Mexico, and it’s the name of the state’s capital city. Gabriella and her family spent a month in Oaxaca in 2018! Indigenous cultures, the Zapotecs, the Mixtec, and others, have survived better than most others elsewhere in Mexico. Of course, there is great food in Oaxaca! The title comes from the name of the fictional diamond that has been stolen in the original film. There were seven sequels after the first film that were directed by Edwards. Many agree, including Chuck, that the first sequel, A Shot in the Dark, is the best of the entire series. Cato Fong may be Chuck’s favorite character of the series, but of course Peter Sellers’ Jacques Clouseau is brilliant! Despite his meticulous research, Chuck knows he has mixed up which scenes were in which movies! Yes, there were other movies made that were based on the original, but Chuck hasn’t been able to muster the strength to watch them. There is also a series of animated shorts based on this series. In episode 64, Chuck talks about Jeopardy! The original version of this classic game show debuted on March 30, 1964. The host of the original Jeopardy! was Art Fleming, and the announcer was Don Pardo. The syndicated version of Jeopardy! premiered in 1984 and since then, the host has been Alex Trebek, and the announcer has been Johnny Gilbert. Chuck has some thoughts about Alex Trebek. In episode 63, Chuck sits down with return guest John Swinford to talk about punk rock! Chuck and John discuss what punk rock is and its origins. In episode 62, Chuck talks about grits! This southern tradition is made from dried, ground corn. Chuck usually has his with cheese mixed in. Grits helped to make the sitcom Alice a hit! In episode 61, Chuck sits down with Bill McKeown to talk about Aviation! This episode takes off with a brief history of Aviation. Then several in-flight movies are enjoyed and compared to their real-world counterparts. Chuck and Bill bring the episode in for a landing with customer service and passenger failures. In episode 60, Chuck talks about St. Patrick’s Day! It’s that time of year, on and around March 17, when everyone’s Irish! St. Patrick was a real dude who lived in Ireland in the 5th century. To celebrate his life’s work, there are parades, festivals, and wearing of the green all over the world! There are two parades in Chicago, and the Chicago River even gets in the spirit. In episode 58, Chuck talks about The Honeymooners! The Honeymooners is a sitcom that ran for one season, from 1955 to 1956, also referred to as the “Classic 39.” But before that it was a recurring sketch on Cavalcade of Stars and The Jackie Gleason Show. The main characters are bus driver Ralph Kramden and his wife, Alice, and sewer worker Ed Norton and his wife, Trixie. Most of the stories take place in the Brooklyn apartment of the Kramdens with visits from their upstairs neighbors, the Nortons. Let Chuck know which episodes, or sketches, are your favorites!

In episode 57, Chuck talks over-the-phone with Shawna Harris about Traverse City! Shawna grew up in Traverse City. Traverse City, Michigan is in the pinky area of the “Mitten State.” It’s a small city most of the year, but in the summer the population explodes with visitors for the annual National Cherry Festival and Traverse City Film Festival. In episode 56, Chuck talks about Po’ Boys! Philadelphia has its cheesesteaks, and Chicago has its Italian beef. New Orleans has the Po’ Boy! The origins of this sandwich go back to 1929 in New Orleans. Meat, seafood, or even French fries dressed with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and mayo are the most traditional. In episode 47, Chuck talks on the phone with Gabriella Van Leuven and Mark Christian about Trailer Park Boys! It’s a mockumentary based in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. The show follows the (mis)adventures of trailer park residents Julian, Ricky, and Bubbles. Gabriella introduced Chuck to Trailer Park Boys. In episode 46, Chuck talks about Twelve (12) Angry Men! Chuck thinks this is one of the best courtroom dramas of all time! A young man’s life depends on the outcome of a jury’s deliberations. At first, only one man votes not guilty and sets the plot in motion. Evidence is discussed, argued, and demonstrated. Doubt spreads among the jurors, but is it reasonable?

In episode 45, Chuck sits down with return guest Tom Kearney to talk about Emergency! This television show from the 1970s is about paramedics Johnny Gage and Roy DeSoto of Squad 51. There are also the doctors and the nurse at Rampart General Hospital. Have you used or been on the receiving end of a defibrillator? Does an IV of D5W really cure anything? Have you seen this show? Let Chuck and Tom know what your favorite episodes are.

In episode 44, Chuck talks about Coleslaw! Is he kidding? No, he’s not! The previous episode was about BBQ, and coleslaw is a classic side dish for BBQ. Coleslaw is cabbage salad, and the only common ingredient in the many variations of this salad is cabbage. Be it vinegary, creamy, or mustardy, Chuck loves him some coleslaw! Tell Chuck what kinds of coleslaw you like and what kinds you don’t!

In episode 43, Chuck sits down with his friend Tom Tompkins to talk about BBQ! It’s spelled BBQ, barbeque, barbecue, or with various hyphenations. No matter how it’s spelled, it still refers to smoky, low-and-slow goodness! Regional BBQ styles are discussed, and Tom and Chuck recommend BBQ joints found around the United States. Tell us what your favorite BBQ style is and what joints make the best BBQ.

In episode 42, Chuck talks about Wonder Woman! Beware of the spoilers in this episode! This superhero has appeared in comic books, on television, and now, in feature films. Chuck remembers seeing two different women star as Wonder Woman on TV. He did see the first feature film in which Wonder Woman is the main character, and he did enjoy it. Let Chuck know your thoughts about this wonderful woman!

In episode 41, Chuck sits down with return guest Scott Glennon (He was the very first guest!) to talk about Europe! Scott has been to a couple dozen countries in Europe. His travels through Europe began while studying abroad in Rome, Italy. Chuck once changed planes in Belgium and spent a week in Spain. Scott talks about train travel, food, and some of his favorite sites. It sounds like Scott would sum up Europe with one word: spectacular! Let us know about your European travels.

In episode 40, Chuck talks about The Inbetweeners! Chuck understands that this episode isn’t particularly funny, but this show sure is! It’s a Britcom mentioned in episode 25, and it’s one of Chuck’s favorites! Yes it’s cringe-worthy, but that’s what makes it so great! In episode 37, Chuck sits down with his friend Maggie Connell to talk about Wisconsin! Maggie was born and raised in Wisconsin. There’s more than cheese, beer, and brats in America’s Dairyland. There are also Ducks and Spotted Cows. How does Wisconsin feel about its neighboring states? Give us your thoughts regarding this state’s offerings.

In episode 36, Chuck talks about coffee! This drink made from roasted, ground beans has been around for hundreds and hundreds of years, but Chuck has only been drinking it since he’s been an adult. Chuck likes his coffee black and bold but not burnt! Let Chuck know what kind of coffee you like and where and how you like to drink it!

In episode 35, Chuck sits down with his friend Scott Kraus to talk about South America! Scott spent some time in Colombia and Ecuador, while Chuck has spent no time in any of the twelve sovereign nations or three territories. The largest country in South America, Brazil, has already been covered in a previous episode. Some interesting facts were discussed, and Chuck had fun saying Lake Titicaca. If you’ve traveled to South America, share with us your fondest memories.

In episode 34, Chuck talks about Cooking Shows! He spends too much of his time watching these how-to shows. There was a time when the only place to see an entire show devoted to cooking was on the local Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) station. Now there are entire cable channels devoting to cooking, but Chuck cut the cord months ago, so it’s pretty much back to PBS for him. Tell Chuck about your favorite cooking shows!

In episode 33, Chuck talks over the phone with his friend and return guest, Joel Albright, about hamburgers. Chuck and Joel talk about the origin of this meat patty on a bun—it may not be as straightforward as you think! Besides the chains known worldwide, there are regional ones as well. Joel tells us about the worst hamburger he’s had; but to be honest, he shouldn’t have been too surprised. Tell us about your favorite hamburger joint!

In episode 32, Chuck talks about Barney Miller! It’s a classic sitcom from the 1970s. The men, and occasional women, of the 12th precinct were a diverse bunch who served the Greenwich Village neighborhood in Manhattan, New York City. Throughout its eight seasons, Captain Miller runs an incorruptible squad of detectives. Barney Miller is very well received by police officers for its realistic portrayal of cops!

In episode 31, Chuck sits down with his friend Pat Nevis to talk about Philadelphia! Pat spent the first eight years of his life there—well almost. Chuck visited there in November 2015 and had a great time! Lots of firsts happened in Philadelphia and it’s where Larry Fine of The Three Stooges was born! Chuck and Pat talk about what to see, do, and eat in Philly—there’s a lot more than the Liberty Bell and cheesesteaks! Independence Hall, Eastern State Penitentiary, Reading Terminal Market, and the Mütter Museum are well worth your time as well. In episode 30, Chuck talks about Christmas! It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Chuck very briefly talks about some of the history and traditions of this joyous holiday. Childhood memories are shared, and there’s yet another harrowing journey to the desert—that was one rip-roaring flight. There’s a lot of Christmassy stuff that Chuck didn’t talk about, so let him know what your traditions are for the Christmas season!

In episode 29, Chuck talks with his friend, Laurie Fieffer, over the phone. Chuck and Laurie talk about board games! They grew up together and played many board games together. After discussing the history of board games, Chuck and Laurie reminisce about some of their favorites. Chuck learned about German-style board games during his research and then saw some of these games during his trip to Canada! Let them know which board games you used to play and/or which ones you currently enjoy playing!

In episode 28, Chuck talks about Thanksgiving! It’s that time of year when family and friends gather to give thanks for all that they have. Chuck talks about the origins of this American holiday. Remember it’s celebrated in the United States of America and in Canada. Childhood memories of this holiday are brought up, as are memories of one harrowing journey to the desert—that was one turkey of a flight. But seriously folks, let Chuck know what you’re thankful for this year!

In episode 27, Chuck sits down with his friend John Swinford to talk about running! John has been running since 2004 and has since run in many, many marathons. He ran in his 19th marathon, the 2016 Bank of America Chicago Marathon® after we recorded this episode! Did John’s story of why he started running and the positive effects it’s had on his life inspire Chuck to take up running? (Chuck doubts it.) Tell us about your running experiences, and let us know what benefits you’ve received since you became a runner!

In episode 26, Chuck talks about Italian beef! It’s another one of those Chicago things. Like hot dogs, there are plenty of places to get these delicious sandwiches. Dry, wet, or dipped and with or without sweet peppers, mild giardiniera, or hot giardiniera—so many choices! Oh I suppose you can also top it with cheese. One joint is famous for being Jay Leno’s favorite. Let Chuck know which place you think serves the best Italian beef and how you like yours topped!

In episode 25, Chuck talks with his friends Mary Catherine (Britty) Pastoret (the first return guest) and Joe Osowski about Britcoms! These are British situation comedies. We talk about some well-known shows like Fawlty Towers and Absolutely Fabulous and other lesser-known shows like Steptoe and Son and Till Death Us Do Part. These last two became Sanford and Son and All in the Family, respectively, in the United States. We didn’t mention all of these crossovers—one of the best-known ones actually. Let us know which Britcom is your favorite and which one(s) we forgot to mention!

In episode 24, Chuck talks about Sudoku! It’s not “math”! It’s logic! It’s fun for Chuck just about every Saturday after he’s done eating his bagel. What do bagels have to do with Sudoku? Nothing! Leave it to the Japanese to come up with a puzzle that can be simple one day and next-to-impossible the next. Wait…what? Seriously though—give it a go if you haven’t already. It’s a great way to keep you mind active. Have you given any of the variations a try? If you have, let Chuck know about it.

That’s from ABC’s Wide World of Sports—but it’s still fitting here. Chuck does enjoy watching the summer Olympic Games, but does he enjoy the commentary that goes with them?

In episode 21, Chuck talks with his cousins Alan and Adriana Kurtzweg about Brazil! There’s more to the largest country in South America as well as Latin America than beaches and Carnival. The capital is Brasília, not Rio de Janeiro as some silly, scary movie might have us believe. Alan talks about the futuristic architecture of Brasília. Adriana is from the state of Rio Grande do Sul where Fogo de Chão was founded! We talk about Brazil’s use of hydroelectric power and ethanol. And, of course, we talk about Snake Island!

In episode 20, Chuck talks about Frisbee®! First things first: Frisbee® is a registered trademark of Wham-O. He talks about Frisbee Golf and Ultimate (formerly known as Ultimate Frisbee). From previous episodes you may have gathered that Chuck’s not really into sports. Well that’s true, but he loves to throw these plastic flying discs! And he’s pretty darn good at throwing them! Chuck thinks that last statement is true despite a particular story you’ll hear in this episode.

In episode 19, Chuck talks with his friend Bill Baker about craft beer! We’re not talking about the mass-produced swill the big boys pump out. We’re talking about the fine and varied brews created from yeast, malt, hops, and water. Bill believes every kind of beer has its place. Chuck believes that too but not in the same way. What are your favorite craft beers? Do you like the mass-produced stuff? Tell us about which beers we should try and where we can find them.

In episode 18, Chuck talks about summer! Here in Chicago, it’s not so much the heat it’s the humidity! (Thanks, mom!) What’s not to like about summery things? What’s not to love about picnics, beaches, and fireworks? Hold on to your hats, would you believe Chuck could find fault with these things! What’s the deal with flip-flops? (That’s Chuck’s Seinfeld impression.) Tell Chuck what you like and/or don’t like about summer.

In episode 17, Chuck talks with his friend Tom Kearney about acting! Tom talks about how he got his start in acting on the stage. Tom acts in plays, and he has directed plays. Chuck talks about the first time he tried to see Tom act in a play. Chuck and Tom trade theories of what the role of the audience is. Chicago actors and the respect they have from actors across the country is discussed as well. Tom ends up interviewing Chuck about his inspiration for starting the podcast. Do you like Chuck’s imitation of Jon Lovitz’s Master Thespian?

In episode 16, Chuck talks about award shows! What’s the point of these things? Why do people watch these shows? Why does Chuck watch these shows? Of course there are the big four (E. G. O. T.), but there are plenty of other awards that shouldn’t mean much to most folks. Do you watch award shows? Which part of the show is your favorite? Which part(s) could you do without? Share your thoughts about these narcissistic shows!

In episode 15, Chuck talks with his friends, Alan and Eli Tecktiel. That’s plural! It’s the first time there has been more than one guest on an episode of the podcast! Chuck, Alan, and Eli talk about vinyl records. These things were almost extinct! Thanks to the hipsters (and some artists and Eli), the medium that was all the rage for most of twentieth century is alive and well. What are these things that once needed a piece of furniture in order to hear them? What is their appeal? Where can you get them? What’s the coolest album cover? Tell us about your favorite record or album.

In episode 14, Chuck talks about theatergoing! Yes, it’s a noun—look it up! Chuck loves going to the theater to see plays. He’ll see a drama, a comedy, a dramedy, and maybe even a musical (maybe). Oh, but he doesn’t love everything about the theatergoing experience (surprise)—see it’s also an adjective! Tell Chuck about your favorite plays! What transgressions have you witnessed/endured while trying to enjoy the performance?

In episode 13, Chuck talks with his friend, Tom Greene, over the phone. That’s right listeners, it’s the first episode recorded over the phone! (The host has mad tech skills!) Chuck and Tom talk about people all people must deal with—jerks! Admit it, you’ve been a jerk. Chuck and Tom admit when they’ve been jerks. Are jerks born or bred? Once a jerk, always a jerk? Let us know about your encounters with a jerk—even (especially) if it was you!

In episode 12, Chuck talks about bagels! For those who know him, they know he has a bit of a routine when it comes to bagels. He talks about the controversial history of bagels and a little about how they ended up all over North America. How are they made? What can you put on a bagel? Does Chuck go on a rant? Guess where you won’t see him having a nice, hot bagel! Let Chuck know what your favorite bagel is and what you put on your bagel!

In episode 11, Chuck sits down with his friend, Corey Lynn, to talk about Columbo. It’s the classic television series starring Peter Falk as a lieutenant in the Los Angeles police department who has to solve a murder. What’s so special about this series? The viewer already knows whodunit! The beauty and fun of it is that you get to watch the disheveled man in the rumpled raincoat (in Los Angeles?) disarm, distract, and politely pester the guilty person until there is enough evidence to make an arrest. Other shows that have a “howcatchem” format are mentioned as well. Oh just one more thing: Leave a comment to tell us what your favorite episode is or what shows we didn’t mention have an inverted detective story format!

In episode 10, Chuck talks about tacos because the episode is being posted on a Tuesday. (Figure it out.) He explains a bit of their history and why they turned into the things wrapped in hard shells with ground beef, lettuce, and cheese, which is how many gringos know them. The basic protein fillings are mentioned, but tacos are one of those things that you can stuff with just about anything. (But Chuck might make fun of you for it.) Chuck’s favorite filling is lengua (tongue), with onions and cilantro of course, along with a squirt of lime and maybe some salsa! You can guess if an endorsement deal from Taco Bell is coming soon. Let Chuck know what kind of tacos you like and the best place to get them!

In episode 9, Chuck sits down with his friend, Amy Henderson, to talk about Oak Park, Illinois. It’s a western suburb and it has lots to offer. Amy and her family live in Oak Park, and we discuss all of this town has to offer. Frank Lloyd Wright and Ernest Hemingway fans should consider a visit. Comedy legends Betty White and Bob Newhart were born in Oak Park, Illinois. And one of the dudes on The Big Bang Theory grew up there—so there’s that. It may not be Chicago, but for a suburb it’s pretty nice!

In episode 8, Chuck talks about the Vietnamese noodle dish known as Pho. It’s the national dish of Vietnam, and it’s normally eaten for breakfast. You’ll hear it pronounced so that it rhymes with duh or so that it rhymes with go. Pronounce it however you like; but when you’re feeling low, have a bowl of pho! (See what I did there?) The noodles and their texture are important, but it’s the broth that differentiates one version from another. Chuck likes his with tendon and tripe! (Oh relax!) Let Chuck know what you like in your pho!

In episode 7, Chuck sits down with his friend, Joel Albright, to talk about pizza. Chuck and Joel grew up in the south suburbs of Chicago, and when they were teenagers, they both worked at pizza joints. There’s a little history, nostalgia, and discussion about the different types of pizza available in the Chicago area. There’s one topping Joel does not want anywhere near his pizza! This episode is the first of 2016, and there are a few new things included. There are two new segments. There is also a call to action: Tell us about your favorite pizza and where to get it! In episode 6, Chuck talks about hot dogs. He loves him some hot dogs, and living in Chicago gives him oh so many places to enjoy them. What can be said about a hot dog that hasn’t been said already? Who cares? Just sit back, listen carefully, and you might be able to figure out which condiment Chuck thinks doesn’t belong on a hot dog. And he’s not alone!

In episode 5, Chuck sits down with his best friend, Dave Ryan, to talk about the comedy team icons. There were actually Six Stooges over the course of their run: Moe Howard, Larry Fine, Curly Howard, Shemp Howard, Joe Besser, and Curly-Joe DeRita. We talk about some of our favorite shorts, scenes, and lines from these knuckleheads. Chuck recently returned from Philadelphia where he ended up at Jon’s Bar and Grille, which was originally the house in which Larry Fine was born. Listen carefully to see if you can guess if Chuck had some wine before recording this episode.

In episode 4, Chuck talks about the trains, buses, and bikes meant for the masses. He doesn’t own a car any more, so these are the things he relies on to get around—these and the kindness of strangers (and not the bikes). He’s used public transportation all across these United States and in Canada and Spain. Listen in to learn how we can all get along and how to not piss off Chuck while you avail yourselves of these convenient conveyances.

In episode 3, Chuck sits down with his friend Mary Catherine (Britty) Pastoret. We talk about Masterpiece (formerly known as Masterpiece Theatre) on PBS. From Upstairs, Downstairs to Downton Abbey, we talk about why we love (well, really why Britty loves) these shows. And, hey, it doesn’t matter if you’re rich or poor; that’s one of the great things about PBS. If you have nothing better to do on Sunday nights, then give these shows a go. Just because Chuck doesn’t usually watch them—that doesn’t mean you can’t.

In episode 2, I, your host, Chuck Schlaudraff, sit down alone to share some thoughts about the eleven podcasts I listen to on a regular basis. Well ok, this episode is not really all that funny I suppose. But if in the mid-sixties, people endured a season of My Mother the Car, then you can make it through this episode. This gives you some insight into those podcasts that have informed me, inspired me, and have brought me many hours of entertainment. Surely you’ve heard of some of these; and if you haven’t, I think you would enjoy them. And sorry for calling you Shirley (unless that is your name).

In the very first episode, I, your host, Chuck Schlaudraff, sit down with my very first guest, Scott Glennon (my brother). We talk about this great city we love—Chicago. It’s the great city we live in, the great city we work in, and the great city that is home to the Hungry for Laughs! studio. Yes, there was Al Capone! Yes, there was a great fire, and there is still the occasional fire. There’s great food, architecture, museums, sports, and a lake! So much great stuff here in the big city, we couldn’t possibly get to it all.
