Amy Wright chats with brothers Michael and Kevin Bacon, aka The Bacon Brothers, all about their brand-new five-song EP, Erato.
As multi-faceted artists with a ton of creativity in their DNA, Michael and Kevin have been actively creating music together, well, since they were just kids. They call the genre-bending sound they make “Forosoco” - a blend of folk, rock, soul, and country influences. And that makes sense, considering it's the continuation of sounds heard long ago in Philadelphia, where the two siblings were raised on a soundtrack of 1970s singer/songwriters, Philly soul singers, and classic rock bands.
"We're a songwriting band, and the songs lead the way," Kevin explains. "We're not beholden to a specific sound. We just write the songs and let them point us in the right direction. That's how we've done it since the very beginning."

With no touring happening, there were so many artists who decided to set up little home recording rooms. Because we were all physically isolated, she points out, sharing tracks and flying them to musician friends was a way to commune and collaborate, giving each musician the freedom to interpret, express and add to the songs in their own unique way. Community is the key word for today’s show. We had the honor of catching up with Mike, Dave, and Michael of Greensky Bluegrass, a bluegrass-fueled band that’s created a unique community of its own that’s been absolutely thriving for the last two decades. Amy Wright connected with the guys on video call to learn about how Greensky initially got together and built its fanbase, how the band decided which songs to include in its upcoming album Stress Dreams, how Covid-19 forced them to take a break from touring, and how they've grown their sound over the years. We're really excited to share a conversation that Amy Wright recently had with sisters Eleanor and Bonnie Whitmore, two highly accomplished singer-songwriters who are releasing their first album together as The Whitmore Sisters. Titled Ghost Stories, the album is inspired by the loss of family, friends, ex-boyfriends and, on the title track, people who have died by police violence. These “ghosts” chose to appear right as Covid became entrenched, when live music evaporated and people were isolated from each other.
We dig into how this new record was produced by Chris Masterson, and how, ultimately, Ghost Stories’ cathartic songs embrace the beauty and the experience of living. What came from lock-down and shared experiences; hiking the Grand Canyon at five, playing bars at 15, getting their pilots’ licenses, or just embracing the beauty of living, is an album to take you places and make you feel so alive. Eleanor says she’s always liked Woody Guthrie’s way of looking at it: ‘Music is to comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable.’”

Welcome to Insights, everyone. Today, our guest is one of the most acclaimed female country artists of our time, West Virginia native and multi-Grammy award-winner, Kathy Mattea. When chatting with an artist of Kathy’s caliber and who’s been at it as long as she has (the early 80s to be exact), there’s obviously so much ground to cover and so many roads to go down. Today, what we focus on mainly is her new role as host of NPR Music and West Virginia Public Broadcasting’s Mountain Stage show.
Kathy’s been performing and sometimes co-hosting on the show for over 30 years, so it makes total sense that she would take the reins. She’s also performed on the show more times than any other female artist, second to fellow West Virginia native Tim O'Brien. Welcome to Insights, everyone. Today, our guest is West Virginia native and alternative-Americana artist Christian Lopez, a high-energy, whole-hearted performer whose new third studio album, The Other Side, was just released back in October. Lopez says that if he wants his music to last in the world, he has to stay as authentic as possible, and that means not compromising or being boxed in. That also applies to just being a human, he adds. Wherever that leads him, he’s sure that'll be the place that he was meant to be, both musically and mentally.

We caught up with Karl from the control room of his new studio in Hastings in Southern England, where he's overlooking the sea – the English Channel, to be exact. In the 80s and 90s, Karl released a series of chart-topping albums, his first being the critically lauded Private Revolution. It featured the MTV darling doing nearly everything: singing, writing, producing, and playing most instruments. He escaped the sophomore slump with the release of the majestic Goodbye Jumbo. Rolling Stone said that "Goodbye Jumbo displays an ambition as broad as the emotional range of its music." More genius records followed until 2000, when all came to a crashing halt as Karl fell victim to a brain aneurysm. It took some time, but he picked up the pieces and began writing and recording again. This past year found Karl releasing vinyl reissues of his all the albums in his catalog. Our guest on the show today is Jon Foreman, an artist that’s always searching for something - searching for a lyric or a melody, searching for a connection or acceptance. For Jon Foreman, most importantly, he’s searching for beauty and truth. And it’s out of this search that his latest release, Departures, was born. Though he’s most known as the leader of the multi-platinum selling, Grammy Award winning band SWITCHFOOT, his solo album Departures serves as the latest chapter in a lifelong search for light in the dark moments. Please welcome, Jon Foreman.

Our guest on the show today is Langhorne Slim, whose stream-of-consciousness songwriting makes up his new album Strawberry Mansion, available via Dualtone Records. His decision to get sober helped inspire the new record, which he wrote in his adopted hometown of Nashville after it was hit by a tornado and the world at large was hit by a global pandemic. Our guest on Insights today is Garrison Starr, who, for a while, thought she was done playing music. A lifetime of trauma, from her upbringing in a fundamentalist Christian household in Mississippi to more than two decades navigating the music industry, left her spirit broken. Fortunately, she’s reconciled the pain of her past, wrestled shame and self-doubt into submission, and stands in her powerfully bared truth with her new album, Girl I Used To Be, which is available now via Soundly Music. Amy Wright caught up with Garrison to discuss the new album, her background, and much more.

On the show today, Amy Wright chats with Seth Walker, an artist that we've been inspired by time and time again. He always has something positive to share and his music is a real melting pot of sounds. Seth is an artist who realizes that, in these doubtful times, we all need a little push to get us through. He writes songs of hope, songs that give us comfort, and songs that make us move. His style is very vibey and draws heavily on the sounds of the Big Easy, New Orleans. If you know him, you love him, and if you don’t know him yet, we're honored to introduce you. So please join us in welcoming, Seth Walker.

On the show today, Amy Wright talks with Tami Neilson, a truly inspiring and vibrant artist who has been an active musician virtually her entire life. And speaking of virtually, this conversation takes place over Zoom because Tami’s actually in New Zealand, where she’s been living for nearly two decades. In that timeframe, she’s released several albums, including Dynamite, Don’t Be Afraid, Sassafrass!, and most recently, CHICKABOOM!, and CHICKBOOM! Deluxe. Tami told us for CHICKABOOM! she really wanted to strip things back, in the tradition of that Sun Records sound—a really driving rhythmic trio that features the voice and the songs. She wanted an album of punchy little firecrackers, and that’s exactly what she’s got.

Our guest today on Insights is A.J. Croce, who, over the past three decades, has established his reputation as a passionate piano player and serious vocal stylist, pulling from a host of musical traditions — part New Orleans, part juke joint, part soul. While his last album, Just Like Medicine, paired him with songwriting legend Dan Penn and an all-star cast of players, his new album, By Request, was born of memories — of favorite artists and shows, but mostly, of late-night gatherings with groups of friends, many of them fellow musicians, with Croce at the piano taking requests. To quote Willie Nelson, “A.J. has wisdom beyond his years. With his music, he represents his generation with a profound sense of honesty in his lyrics and quality in his delivery. The future of entertainment is safe in his hands.” Let's take a listen.
