Today you get to enjoy the fourth show programmed by one of our patrons from the CONDUCTOR TIER over at our Patreon page. In this tier, which is $10 USD ($14.50 CAN), donors get all of the benefits of lower tiers PLUS they earn the opportunity to program their very own personal one-hour(ish) show once a year. Victor Field, a long-time fan of the show, took advantage of this opportunity and this is the show that he put together for us to enjoy!
So, how did Victor get into soundtrack collecting? This is what he had to say...
I was born in England but my dad moved us to his home country of Barbados in 1976. I spent my childhood and teen years there before coming back to England to live in 1993. One of first album purchases was TVT's double album "Television's Greatest Hits". I think it was I didn't want to be listening to what everyone else around me was, I'm still kicking myself that I was so late to discover taping from the TV. I once asked my dad why we never went to see "Star Wars" (I refuse to call it "Star Wars: A New Hope") in the cinema? He said I never asked! Although I did go to see "The Empire Strikes Back" and "Return Of The Jedi". I haven't seen any of the Special Editions.
As with all of the Patreon Playlist shows, this one is a varied and eclectic program featuring music from various eras of film and TV. You'll hear selections from Basil Poledouris, Alfred Newman, Jerry Goldsmith, Dave Grusin, Barry Grey, Derek Wadsworth, Danny Elfman, Craig Safan, Bruce Broughton, Alan Silvestri, James Newton Howard, John Williams, and Brad Fiedel.
Enjoy the podcast, and thanks for all of your efforts in curating this playlist, Victor!

That's right folks, the Oscars still suck! While they managed to bring back all of the categories they disrespected last year and will present them live again on this year's broadcast, the Academy's Music Branch, on the other hand, I think has clearly lost its mind. Not only are the nominees for best original score this year incredibly lacklustre, but they also took it one step further by nominating one of the most excruciating, annoying, utterly distracting film scores I've ever heard, ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT by Volker Bertelmann. Not since Hans Zimmer's DUNKIRK have I experienced a score so repulsive that I nearly walked out of the theatre because of the music.
One of Bertelmann's first instructions from director Edward Berger was to "please do something that is destroying the pictures that is not, you know, underlining what we already see." And then there was further instruction to literally make the score sound as bad as possible by "want(ing) to have a snare drum that is played by somebody who can't play the snare drum" Seriously?! And that ladies and gentlemen is something that seemed to really tickle the music branch in all the right places. Remember folks, different = good! Forget about the story, or complementing the picture, elevating the drama... Nah, just make some noise that sounds like a three-year-old played it!
So, with that, I once again am boycotting the Academy Awards this time because of the Music Branches' tin ears. By the way, not all of the music branch members feel this way, and some of them have really good taste in good film music, but the majority of them are, in my opinion, always out to lunch!
So since we are spending another year trying hard to ignore the Oscars (I guess I'm failing to do so by doing this show), I thought I'd highlight the people who I feel genuinely, and honestly do some of the best work celebrating film music, THE INTERNATIONAL FILM MUSIC CRITICS ASSOCIATION (IFMCA). Just to be as transparent as possible, I am a proud member of the IFMCA and I genuinely do think we at the IFMCA do the best in curating the best scores of the year in our annual awards. That might be an arrogant, egotistical statement, but that's what I believe.
In an effort to prove that the IFMCA, more than any other awards organisation, presents the most accurate depiction of the year's top film scores, I will be comparing it to the Oscars and their historical list of nominees and winners from 1998-2022 to the IFMCA's nominees and winners over that same time.
The show is a long one, almost as long as an Oscar telecast. I hope you enjoy and please let me know if you agree or disagree with my assessment of the Oscars and the IFMCA in the comments below.
Enjoy!

In June 2021, for TALKING SOUNDTRACKS, Jason Drury talked to the four-time Emmy nominated journalist, writer, and producer of over 200 documentaries about music and cinema, Steven C Smith, about his book MUSIC BY MAX STEINER: THE EPIC LIFE OF HOLLYWOOD’S MOST INFLUENTIAL COMPOSER.
In May 2022, Jason had the opportunity to talk to Steven again about his first book, published in 1991, about another pioneering and influential composer in the history of film music, A Heart at Fire's Center: The Life and Music of Bernard Herrmann.
Part one of their interview concerned Herrmann’s radio career, his collaborations with Orson Welles leading to the beginning of his film music career with Citizen Kane.
In Part 2, they discuss the composer’s career up to his premature death in 1975, and feature the most important partnership in his career, with director Alfred Hitchcock. You’ll also hear more of Herrmann’s great music from original recordings and re-recordings.
Enjoy.

It's alive! The Cinematic Sound Radio Podcast Top 10 has been brought back from the dead!
The last time I did a show like this was back in 2018 when I presented my Favourite Western Tracks Of All Time. I wanted to make the Top 10 and ongoing series but only a short month later, I went on an 8-month hiatus. I never thought about resurrecting the Top 10 show when I returned, however, I did have one last show planned out, which I found in a playlist in my digital music collection.
That was in January and was planning to premiere this show on Valentine's Day but I lost my voice and couldn't record the show in time for the February 14th deadline. Eventually, my voice came back to me and I managed to get this one upload eight days after the Hallmark Holiday.
So, welcome back to the Cinematic Sound Radio Podcast Top 10 and I'm looking for suggestions on other Top 10 shows. I'm clear out of ideas right now. Post them in the comments below or send an emial.
In the program today, I'm going to play for you my Ten Favourite Love Themes Of All Time and two honourable mentions. You'll hear selections from composers Jerry Goldsmith, Lee Holdridge, John Williams, Miklos Rozsa, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, James Horner, Brian Transeau and more.
Enjoy!
