Submit ReviewI hired my first business coach around 2017. It was life-changing and scary AF. Since then, I’ve never been without a business coach or have been in a mastermind.
I’m going to tell you who I’ve hired, why, how much I paid, and what I took away from each business coach and mastermind… so buckle up!
I’m not including online courses in this roundup. Those are one-and-done with lifetime access and are not as much as a time and financial investment.
But if you’re wondering, my favorite online courses include one about SEO by Brandon Gaille who now has RankIQ, and Justin Welsh’s on LinkedIn and content creation.
Back to business coaching and masterminding…

Imposter syndrome is loosely defined as doubting your abilities and feeling like a fraud. It disproportionately affects high-achieving people, who find it difficult to accept their accomplishments.
One study found that about 70% of all people have felt like an imposter at some point. Imposter syndrome often affects those who are highly capable perfectionists.
What does imposter syndrome look like?
You don’t give yourself credit. You may think it’s only a matter of time until the luck runs out, and you're exposed.
You’re in the forest, so you can’t see the trees. As more wins and accomplishments pile up, you aren’t able to clear the cobwebs and look at your achievements for what they really are.
Ask yourself this:
"If a stranger shared these accomplishments with me, would the logical conclusion be that they are all a stroke of luck and therefore a fraud?” Probably not.
1. Maybe you have the curse of knowledge blindness.
2. Maybe you don’t realize we are all constantly learning and can’t possibly know it all all the time.
3. Maybe you need to take a beat to ponder your accomplishments.
4. Maybe you need to manifest being a big deal in real life… kinda.
Your thoughts will influence your words, which determines your actions.
Thoughts > Words > Actions
Some call it manifesting. I call it getting off your ass and making sh*t happen.

You can’t just hire someone to handle your public relations and call it a day. You still need to be involved to make it successful.
I’m going to tell you how people sabotage their own PR, so if you’re doing these things, you stop… or you know better when you’re ready to implement a PR strategy.
1. You don’t get back to us when we need you to.The media works on deadlines, so we need to hear from you ASAP. Many times, they take what’s first and won’t wait for what’s best. Also, don’t no-show an interview… because you won’t have another one.
2. You don’t keep us in the loop. You know your industry better than we do, so fill us in when big things happen in your niche or at your company so we can spill our news story wheels to see how we can weave you into the narrative and get it some coverage. It could be very helpful to us if you keep an eye out for story ideas!
3. You have unrealistic expectations. There needs to be more education in this industry because it’s wild how many people think a.) it’s easy to get wherever you want when you want, b.) how deserving they are to get wherever they want when they want.
4. You don’t speak in soundbites or good quotes.A good soundbite is an animated 15-20 seconds of you saying something of value that adds to whatever is being discussed. Think of it as a passionate conversation, not an infomercial. Just because you’re high up on the totem pole at a company, doesn’t mean you’re good at this. Comfort is key.
5. You don’t understand the news. It’s not the media’s job to give you a free commercial or promotion. There is a big difference between what is paid and what is earned. Earned media is always going to answer the questions reporters are asked in their morning meeting about why a story is being covered now infront of their audience.

Warren Buffett said it takes 20 years to build a reputation. That means PR is a long-term game - not a sprint, but a marathon.
This is why most PR software requires an annual subscription and why most PR agencies require an annual contract.
Trust me, this isn’t to trap you and take your money. It’s just how the industry works.
I’m going to tell you why it works like this and how you can use it to your benefit from my perspective as the owner of a PR agency and someone who helps people do this on their own through my online course and mentoring program.
1. Your PR firm plants seeds that need time to grow.
2. It takes time to learn your company and plan an effective strategy.
3. Quick hits don’t have staying power.
4. The biggest media outlets often require the most time and effort.
5. The investment isn’t a guaranteed ROI.
If you hire anyone to handle PR for you, please ask these questions:

One of my Media Mentoring Program clients wanted to know more about how I repurpose my content, so here we go!
Last year, I approached content with a podcast first in mind. This year, I’m going YouTube first.
1. Audio is pulled from the YouTube video for my podcast on Become a Media Maven.
2. I pull a few one-minute snippets from the YouTube video to post short videos.
3. My assistant pulls the show notes and creates a blog post on MediaMavenAndMore.com.
4. My assistant creates a pin that leads to those show notes on my Pinterest.
5. Create multiple eye-catching text copy with the help of Justin Welsh’s Content Operating System.
6. Add images to the multiple text posts. Then, you can post it on Instagram too.
7. Add videos to multiple text posts. Then, you can post it on Instagram AND TikTok. You can use stock video or take a video of yourself using a SwitchPod.
8. Create a carousel of images for a “5 tips” or “7 ways to” post to scroll through.
Click here to try Canva Pro for free.
So now we have created a:
1. YouTube video
2. Podcast
3. Blog Post
4. Pin that leads to the blog post
5. Multiple text posts
6. Multiple image posts
7. Multiple video posts
8. Carousel posts
from just one core content creation session.
I batch the content create sessions, then spend part of a day recreating all the content.
I just use a Google spreadsheet to keep track of it all and use Agorapulse to set it in the queue and forget it.
If there is a way I can further repurpose and I didn’t mention it here, let me know!

I recently visited Southern California to visit three hotel clients of mine.
Most work was done before I left. For example, I already wrote three blog posts before leaving South Florida.
That work included:
1. SEO keyword research for each place I was visiting using RankIQ.
2. Write the blog post with hotel client inclusion, but not promotion
You can check out the three blog posts here:
What to Pack for a Trip to Palm Springs:
5 Best Things to Do in Laguna Beach, California:
12 Best Things to Do in La Jolla, California:
3. Kept in mind everything in the blog post during my trip/making a list
4. What I didn’t experience, I embedded images from Instagram
5. Took pictures and video with reels in mind
6. Uploaded everything to a Google Drive folder to share with the client AND to work from when posting to social media
7. Updated my team with feedback on conversations with the client and my takeaways as a guest

So many books are either too generic or all sound the same.

Shoe Dog: A Memoir by the Creator of Nike by Phil Knight is said to be the best business book. Ever. The learning lessons are inferred and not spelled out, but the author summarizes everything he learned at the end.
While I don’t relate to having a product business, I’m struggling to find business and personal development books that aren’t too generic or sound the same.

When I heard that some podcasters spend HOURS editing a 30-minute podcast episode, I was shocked. There is no reason for that!
In this episode, I break down how I edit my episodes for both my podcast and YouTube channel in less time than it takes me to record them.
From cutting out mistakes, pauses, coughs, and everything else you don’t want people to hear, there is an easier way than listening to the entire episode again while you edit. Yes, you can jump straight to the part you need to fix!

It took me about two years to hire my first team member. Then, it took me eight years to hire my first virtual assistant. Eight years! I was afraid AF to delegate things.
I thought it was just me, but this isn’t a rare feeling. Many business owners are afraid to loosen the reins a little bit and let go.
That’s why I invited Kristy Yoder to my podcast. She is the founder and CEO of Smart VAs, a virtual assistant agency. She has a fabulous method on how to decide what you should and should not delegate and why. This exercise is a must for every business owner!
She scaled her agency from one virtual assistant to 70+ talented individuals. She grew her business simply through delegation and now wants to teach others to learn the power of delegation.
Kristy is also the host of The Master Delegator Podcast. She created it for entrepreneurs who want to learn how to become effective in the area of delegation, management, and leadership. She talks about different business growth strategies such as hiring virtual assistants, productivity, online marketing, and many more!
Fun fact: Kristy was born and raised in Manila, Philippines, and moved to the United States in 2019… to my very small hometown of Marion, Ohio!

Eavesdrop on me Going Through a Sales Training with Lisa Dadd
We don’t have to be in a state of discomfort to be successful - especially when it comes to sales.
As a seasoned marketing and sales executive, Lisa Dadd is on a mission to show entrepreneurs that the success they’re seeking isn’t outside of their comfort zone as they’ve been led to believe, but rather INSIDE it.
In this podcast, she covers many ways you can close more sales and actually have fun during sales conversations, including:
● Why you never have to “be a salesperson”, and who you can be instead
● How to identify and utilize your natural approach to sales, as opposed to the “one-size-fits-all” sales methods people are taught.
● Why this approach helps people communicate their value more effectively, and more
authentically.
● Keys to communicating our value in ways people understand
● How to activate your prospect’s deepest desires to create true urgency
● How to leverage objections to connect to what’s truly valuable to your client
With Lisa’s company, Soul Sales™, she shares the tools to remember who we are at our core, and then to be able to communicate our value in ways that others understand.

William Villalobos from TheFutures.io took the stage at FinCon in Orlando in 2022 and talked about two things - the strategy and tactics to batch 30 days of content in one day.
In this episode, I’m going to break down what he said and what I took away from his session on the Solutions Stage.
When it comes to creating content, you need to make decisions like:
Now, you need to define your business focus for the year. It could be you building your brand, getting more traffic, attracting investment, increasing leads, etc.
That’s it for strategy. Now, let’s get into the tactics.
More decision-making needs to happen, like:
William said Whatsapp is growing with micro-communities, but TikTok is the biggest one right now… which is not a surprise, right?
This is where people get stuck. They ask themselves, “what in the world should I talk about?!”
Some places to get ideas include:
William also advised to never focus on all ideas at the same time. Personally, I love this piece of advice because we’ve all heard the same, generic stuff over and over again. It’s time to dig deep and go super specific on one topic. That’s where the value is.
Today, a popular strategy is to find out what is trending on TikTok and cater it to your audience, but do this as an experiment. Do everything as an experiment because you never know what will work and what won’t unless you try.
Some things to try experimenting with include:
A big takeaway for me is to take TikTok videos and put them on YouTube shorts as “how to” videos… and this would work for Instagram reels too. It’s the same content (just be sure to remove any watermarks that may appear).
Make sure you have a CTA to collect leads and a pixel so you c

If you’ve ever thought, “Why create my own events when I can just speak on other people's stages?” or want to know about the different types of events that make the most sense for you, or when are you even ready to host your own event, anyway? Then, how do you get people to actually want to attend?!
All those questions and more will be answered in this podcast episode with Sarah Gray.
Sarah is a 7-figure no BS event marketing strategist from Ireland. She launched her second business in 2019, 8 months before the pandemic hit, and surpassed the seven-figure mark in just over 1 year. (Wild, right?!)
She has an unmatched track record of helping her clients achieve multi-seven-figure success, so no matter what's going on in the world, she knows how to lead you to substantial revenue gains by creating your OWN stage.
In this episode, Sarah breaks down why hosting your own events is one of the BEST (and fun) ways to connect with your followers in a tough economy and how hosting events allows you experience total freedom in your business when it comes to lead generation (so you're no longer dependent on someone else's audience).

5 Ways Melissa Kwan Went from $0 to $500,000 in 3 Years
Melissa Kwan is the co-founder and CEO of eWebinar. eWebinar does all of your demos, onboarding, and training webinars for you so you don’t have to.
She built it from nothing to $500,000 in annual recurring revenue in just three years, but she says revenue is not easy. Getting people to take out their credit cards is getting harder and harder, retaining customers with unrealistic expectations is hard, and building a product and keeping the burn low is hard.
In this podcast episode, she is going to break down how she did it…. and will explain why she brought on a co-founder a year after she started the business.
Melissa also shares how she got her first 100 customers, going into detail on these five points:
1. Wrote down every company in her network that she thought could benefit from her product
2. Two weeks before launch, she went down the list to tell people about what she was doing to see if they wanted to try it out
3. She scheduled onboarding calls where David (her CTO) and she would watch people sign up and create their first webinar so they could fix UI/UX issues
4. She gave anyone who signed up in the first two months a 60-day free trial (mostly because Stripe wasn't integrated yet!)
5. She started charging when their trial was up - no exceptions.
For any business founder, this is her advice:

How Lindsay Padilla built and grew Hello Audio (even after someone tried to steal it)
Lindsay Padilla is the CEO of Hello Audio. I met her in a mastermind for SaaS founders… and we were a handful of females in a group full of men. I invited her on my podcast because I’m very impressed with what she’s been able to do with her software, Hello Audio, in such a short time. So, I wanted to get all the details from her and share them with you at the same time.
In this episode, Lindsay is going to share how she got the idea, built it, had it stolen from her, built it again, then teamed up with some of the biggest names online to launch it successfully.

How to Become an Instagram Influencer in 9 Steps with Christina Galbato
Influencer marketing is HUGE today. Yes, it is misunderstood and so many people think they know how it works, but few actually do. To dive deeper into how it works and how people make living as Instagram influencers, Christina Galbato is pulling back the curtain and sharing her experience as an influencer and a coach to future influencers.
Christina Galbato is a social media influencer, online educator, and digital marketing expert. After building a successful career as a travel influencer and working with brands like Ritz-Carlton, Mazda, and lululemon, Christina pivoted into online education where she built a 7-figure business helping thousands of women build online empires as influencers.
She has been featured in CNN and Forbes and was a speaker at AdWorld and StartUp Grind. She is also the host of the top-rated entrepreneurship podcast Her Life By Design.
These are the nine tips Christina breaks down in this episode:
1. Create content that would attract the brand you want to work with. It needs to be relevant.
2. Get on influencer marketing platforms like Collectively, Fohr, etc.
3. Look on their website for a PR, influencer, or marketing email OR send a message on Instagram
4. Come from a place of business with information on your numbers and audience, share past examples, offer creative ideas, etc.
5. Look at their tagged photos on Instagram to see what they’re doing with other influencers
6. Outsource the pitching work by hiring a VA. You won’t need a manager until you get a lot of inbound requests.
7. Follow up... twice.
8. Continue the relationship with a wrap-up email and screenshots of insights and analytics. Then, pitch a longer-term collaboration.
9. Include case studies with goals and results in your wrap-up emails and in future pitches.

How To Make Money On Etsy Without Making Anything with Madison McCarty
About a month after Madison McCarty opened an Etsy store, she was making $1,000 with her new side hustle. Some of what she sells, she doesn’t even make herself!
I found Madison on TikTok when a 60-second video breaking down her process went viral. It intrigued me so I asked her to come on the Become a Media Maven podcast to break down her process and get super specific so we can see the same success she does.
These are the eight steps Madison covers… and she doesn’t hold back!
Step 1: Don’t overthink it. Just open an Etsy shop and become a seller.
Step 2: Sign up for an account with Printed Mint and check out their items for sale.
Step 3: Brainstorm what you’d want to buy and do research on Etsy.
Step 4: Design it on Canva.
Step 5: Mock it up with Printed Mint.
Step 6: Investigate competitors
Step 7: Post it on Etsy.
Step 8: Within one week post 20 listings. Then, maintain it.
Step 9: Ask for reviews via email with Etsy marketing and include a business card or gift note with your customer’s order.

In this episode, I’m talking while I’m trying to get in my 10,000 steps for the day.
The idea for this episode just came to me yesterday when I was chatting with my mom about why some people with business ideas succeed and other people don’t.
It really just comes down to two things.
In this episode, I’m sharing those two things and elaborating on how they work for me and many others.

I ended 2020 with more than 60 books read.
On Instagram, on my blog, and on my podcast, I share what I’m reading.
People always ask me how I can read so much.
At the end of the day, it’s all about time management.
I’m pretty good at managing my time, but I will also add that my husband stays at home and takes care of the kids so that takes some off my plate.
If you don’t have a stay at home husband, you can still read a lot of books!
He only started staying home in August of 2020 and by then I was finishing one book a week, so #noexcuses.
I have a lot more I want to get to, and I’m sure you do too, so I’m sharing how I’m able to read so many books.

I was scrolling through Twitter when I saw a tread shared by someone I followed.
The person who originally posted it was a woman named Amanda Robson at @Amanda_Robs and it started:
“Sharing some of the most common reasons we've passed on B2B companies at seed/pre-seed”
Even though I’m not looking for funding for Podcast Clout, I thought the points were brilliant reminders of what it takes to have a great business model and goals for growth.
So in this podcast episode, I’m literally reading her thread on Twitter (and of course, sharing my thoughts on a few points she makes).

To be successful in PR, you need to be prepared and be able to give members of the media whatever they want and need on a silver platter. That’s it!
1. Update your site and sales process.
It drives me nuts when people think a PR team is a sales team. It’s not. You need to be ready to convert those leads PR brings… or else, what’s the point?
2. Be nice.
I know this sounds silly, but so many people go into a PR strategy like members of the media owe them something, like they deserve media coverage. Trust me, every journalist in the world would not mind if media pitches stopped. They’d be fine. you wouldn’t. So yes, being nice and courteous to members of the media is helpful.
3. Focus on social media… as an expert.
This doesn’t mean post a bunch of randomness on every platform. This means you should ask yourself, “What are members of the media or potential customers going to find when they search for me on social media?”
4. Have “real people” on standby.
If all the news stories were only the people behind the business, things would get boring really fast. You need to have those trusted customers, referrals, and people who have actually experienced what you talk about ready to go. If you’re a doctor, have a patient. If you have a product, have a real customer who uses your product on a regular basis. These are the people that add the entertainment factor.
5. Do the math.
I hate math, but I mean stats and data when I say do the math. All journalists like numbers because numbers make things current and relevant. It screams “NEWS” when people can see there are hard facts that can be quantified in a news story.
If you have all of these things ready to go and you’re willing to share (even overshare), you will be way ahead of many others looking to build their brand in the media.

In the last two weeks, I’ve been asked this question twice. In fact, I’m asked this question by potential clients all the time.
So, what’s the question? “Where are you going to get me and when are you going to get me there?”
It’s a hard one to answer, but it’s one that needs to be attempted because it’s a common concern for anyone who hires PR agencies or publicists.
The answers will vary depending on who you ask - sometimes people are truthful. Many times, people lie.

Kevin Monell and Jason Caruso host the eCommerce Uncensored podcast. They’ve dabbled in a lot of things in the agency world.
One amazing story they share is how they partnered up with another business owner to take it from $0 to $2 million in revenue… and yes, they were profitable.
In this episode, they talk about having a good product, a positive mindset, and what to do about all of that advice people give you and the things they say about you.

Marketing has changed a lot in the past few years.
To earn media exposure, you need to think outside the box.
In this episode, Bryn Jones shares three very unique and entertaining stories that break down how he does it as the VP of Marketing & Retail at Huse Culinary. (Trust me - you want to hear these stories!)
Bryn also shares how he uses social media as part of his PR strategy and offers advice to other business owners on modernizing their marketing and PR approach instead of just doing things the way they’ve always been done.

Kara Morin is the Director of Marketing at Rareform and she calls email marketing her “baby” at Rareform.

In this podcast episode, I’m chatting with Benjamin Shapiro about his podcast marketing strategy. I just had to learn how he publishes 12 podcasts a week!
Listen to Ben give you a behind the scenes look at how he creates content and why starting with a solid foundation is key.
He goes into what that foundation should be built with and how to understand what you’re good at, who your customers are, and how to successfully develop a brand.
Benjamin Shapiro is the producer and host of the MarTech podcast.
He is the founder of benjshap LLC, a brand development and marketing strategy consultant, that specializes in helping growth-stage companies understand how to identify the overlap between corporate identity & customer needs to build an effective marketing strategy.
Prior to his current role, Benjamin left a successful career in business development at eBay to become an entrepreneur that has run a bootstrapped startup, multiple marketing teams at early-stage VC-backed companies, and an independent consulting and content business.

Have you ever wanted to start a skincare regimen, but you just did not know where to begin?
In this episode, I am going to bust some skincare myths and talk skincare facts with the help of Britt Johnston from Palm Beach Facials in Palm Beach, Florida.
No, it’s not the normal business talk we usually have here on Become a Media Maven, but let’s face it - we all have skin, someone sees it every day, and none of us are getting any younger.
