If you’re looking to up-level your negotiation abilities, and if you’re like most people, you’d go looking for tips on negotiation tactics. In fact, the most important element of effective negotiation is preparation. Sadly, it’s typically the most over-looked element in the process. The cost for that oversight is high.
In this episode, you’ll first explore the perils of failing to properly prepare for negotiation. Let’s uncover why preparation is important and the pitfalls of ignoring the process. Then we’ll turn to some simple solid strategies you can use to boost your preparation effectiveness.
Preparation is power in a negotiation. In fact, some experts suggest that preparation accounts for 45% of ones’ success in bargaining. Preparation first involves preparing yourself – doing the inner work necessary to be able to show up as the best version of yourself. Also be sure to consider the other party. Prepare for how to best deal with each individual negotiation counter-part. We’re taught to implement the 5 W’s in investigative endeavours, yet most people don’t invoke those 5 little words – who, what, where, when & why – in their negotiations. That’s a mistake. Those who consider the 5 W’s with intention set themselves apart and get better results.
A.R.E. F.I.T. model.
I created this simple mnemonic to help you remember the key skills you’ll want to bring to the negotiating table with intention. A.R.E. F.I.T. Just think, you ARE FIT to be a great negotiator.

Professor Michele Williams, Tippie College of Business, University of Iowa, has taught negotiations to executives, startups, MBAs, and undergrads at leading schools of management for 15 years. She is a negotiation strategist for women leaders and a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion specialist. She is co-author of Four Capabilities Assessment, an online 360-degree performance assessment used by organizations to enhance the leadership of potential managers, and of the article, The Hidden Key to Leading Through Chaos, published in the MIT Sloan Management Review.
Dr. Williams conducts research on how group membership influences trust. collaboration and leadership in the corporate workplace and entrepreneurial firms. She has authored theoretical and empirical papers and case studies, published in notable academic journals, and speaks at academic and professional conferences on her topics of research.

If you're like most people, you'd probably think that dominating the conversation in a negotiation is a sign you're 'winning'. I invite you to consider that the opposite is true. Instead of approaching a win/lose competitive mindset, what if I suggest you could get better results through a collaborative approach?
I used to buy into the myth that negotiation was about toughness... especially in trial advocacy. It took me many years to come back to myself and recognize the power in my innate strengths and feminine traits. Primary among those was the powerful impact of invoking empathy with intention and negotiations.
One of the shortest paths to empathy is truly listening to what people have to say. Listening with a view to understand and try to meet other party's needs. Understanding and sharing someone's perspective doesn't always come easy, especially when a relationship may be contentious. But making that effort will outweigh missing the opportunity to build on your relationship with the other person(s).
If we can place ourselves firmly in the shoes of another, understand their inner motivation, relate to their needs, and together identify a shared solution that is better than has been considered, the barriers of competition evaporate. The path to this result is through elevated active listening.
In this episode. you'll discover the difference between passive and active listening. You'll uncover the secret sauce: elevated active listening and why it's such a game-changer. You'll also come away with hot tips on how to become a better listener.
From this place, it is possible to come up with creative, unanticipated solutions in a way that would not arise from a place of one-upmanship or competition. Superior negotiation should conclude with an alternative that is better than had been considered by either party. In my view, this is rarely possible from an adversarial inward-focused stance but is regularly achievable when invoking elevated active listening.

Movie producer, Sam Goldwyn is attributed with the famous quip "A verbal contract isn't worth the paper it's written on".
So when should you get a deal in writing versus accepting the promise or handshake? Lawyers typically advocate to get written contracts. Many people believe a contract is only valid or enforceable if it's in writing. Let me bust that myth. Contracts can be written, verbal, or inferred by conduct (with limited statutory exceptions). The question is which best serves you in any given situation.

Let’s celebrate the women who have made a difference in our lives.
And let’s celebrate the changing tide – the rise of the feminine voice – now is the time – we’ve defined success almost exclusively on the masculine model for too long – and it tipped the world out of balance as both men and women eschewed their feminine seeing it as a liability – that imbalance is not working – it’s time we stop seeing the feminine voice as a liability and instead stepped into the gorgeous power in our innate authenticity.
Let’s celebrate women – those who’ve come before us – those who are changing the world now (some in small ways, others on a larger stage and scale) – make sure to include yourself – and those to come.
