Submit ReviewWelcome to another episode in my Friendship Stories series.
Carol and Gloria's friendship spans a few cultural differences, including race (Carol is Asian and Gloria is Black) and a large age gap (they have twenty years between them). In this episode, Carol speaks candidly about how these differences affects their friendship and bring both challenges but also beautiful gifts.
This conversation is also one about the importance of openness and vulnerability in friendship. I do want to say that as a white woman hosting this conversation, my job here was to listen to their lived experiences that are so different from my own. Carol and Gloria listened to this episode after we recorded it to make sure that their perspectives were represented.
Carol and Gloria’s friendship definitely qualifies as unique and I think you’ll enjoy hearing about it.
The FRIENDSHIP STORIES series is a set of conversations I had while writing my new book The Life Council: Every Woman Needs.

Welcome to another episode in my Friendship Stories series.
Over the last few months, we’ve heard a number of uplifting stories about unique and transformative friendships in this series. But today’s episode is about an aspect of friendship that is painful and rarely discussed: the friendship break up.
My guest, JeriLynne, shares that when her marriage ended, there was collateral damage in the form of friendship loss as well. That friendship breakup left her without real closure and she continues to struggle to be vulnerable in friendships.
While it’s certainly easier to talk about all the positive aspects of friendship, I think it’s also important to discuss these harder, more painful parts of these formative relationships. JeriLynne’s experience is significant and unfortunately a very real part of these friendship.
I write about friendship breakups and friendship loss in The Life Council in a chapter called The Empty Chair.

In my new book The Life Council: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs, I write about how the "old friend" doesn't necessarily mean than you've known one another for decades. All that is required to hold that Life Council seat is to have a friend who has known you from one version of yourself into another. That actual timeline might vary.
But Shauna Niequist is one of my oldest friends however you measure it. We met in the late 90's working at summer camp, where (as I wrote about in my first book Share Your Stuff), I learned from Shauna a different way to walk in the world than I had previously been exposed to.
For twenty-five years, Shauna has been a friend, role model, mentor, and, yes, even a fellow obsessive as we discuss in this episode.
Shauna Niequist is the New York Times bestselling author of Cold Tangerines, Bittersweet, Bread & Wine, Savor, Present Over Perfect, and I Guess I Haven't Learned That Yet. She is married to Aaron, and they live in New York City with their two sons.
To listen to the full reading tangent Shauna and I take in this conversation, you'll have to join my Secret Stuff community.

Welcome to another episode in my Friendship Stories series.
The childhood that my guest Kammy is going to describe in this conversation is unlike any I've ever heard. She grew up on a remote island just two square miles in size, without much contact with the rest of the world. Looking back, Kammy can see that the friendships from this time in her life shaped her relationships to come, and the bond she shares with other children from the island is unrivaled. This is a fascinating conversation so different from the rest of our Friendship Stories.

In the framework of my new book The Life Council: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs, the duo behind the Pantsuit Politics podcast could be considered Business Besties or Old Friends, but I see them primarily as BATTLE BUDDIES.
Beth Silvers and Sarah Stewart Holland have spent nearly ten years publicly discussing the American political landscape on the podcast Pantsuit Politics, and, well, you can imagine why I see them as having walked through a battle together.
Somehow, though, these two women have navigated these conversations with integrity, grace, and - especially - nuance.
I've been a fan of Beth & Sarah for years now, and respect their work so much. It was honor to have them on the show to talk about their friendship and partnership.

Can men and women be "just friends"? Kerith & Lee are here to answer that OF COURSE they can. Their unique friendship story starts with a surgery that results in hours-long phone marathons and a friendship that stretches across time and gender roles.
In this conversation you’ll hear what Kerith’s husband thinks of their friendship, how it’s impacted Lee’s dating life, and how others have reacted to their unusual friendship.

PREORDER: The Life Council: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs by Laura Tremaine
My second book The Life Council: 10 Friends Every Woman Needs comes out in just two weeks, and so I have writing on my mind.
Becoming an author has been my life's biggest dream since I was in elementary school, but I was in my 40's and had been writing professionally for over a decade before it finally happened. And, truthfully, my first two books are not what I ever pictured myself writing!
I created this episode because I really wish someone had broken down the process of writing a book for me years ago. And because I think a lot of people want to write a book, but have no idea where to start.
Although the 10 steps I walk through here follow my own process of writing nonfiction, a lot of what I'm sharing here could apply to any sort of creative endeavor. I'm talking about preparation, mindset, rituals, and radical honesty.
How To Write A Book (in 10 Steps):
Be honest about the WHY (and if a book is the best format to tell your story)
Decide what you’re really trying to say
Outline, outline, outline
Give yourself a deadline
Find your rituals
Measure something
Write for yourself, rewrite for your audience
Use an editor and don’t take the edits personally
Let the book become what it’s supposed to be
Call it done
