On Tuesday new details of the Aukus agreement – described as the most significant multilateral defence partnership in generations – were unveiled. Australia’s acquisition of nuclear-powered submarines is meant to increase security and stability in the Indo-Pacific but the cost will be eye-watering and the project has drawn criticism from world leaders and former prime ministers.
