Zane Simon & Eddie Mercado are here to breakdown the UFC VEGAS 8 event, with hot takes, possible next fights, as well as reactions to the overall event. Sign up for ESPN+ and watch UFC VEGAS 8: ‘SMITH VS. RAKIC’ - #UFCAPEX — August 29th., 2020 at: http://go.web.plus.espn.com/c/482924/566982/9070?sharedid=BloodyElbow This Saturday’s, August 29th. Fight Night event, broadcast from the APEX Fight Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, showcased a light heavyweight bout between Anthony ‘Lionheart’ Smith and Aleksandar Rakić. When Jon Jones left the Light Heavyweight title vacant recently, the division completely opened up. As a result, this was suddenly a very important fight, one that could determine the next contender once a new champion is crowned. In what turned out to be an utterly dominant performance, Rakic hammered the lead leg and then simply proved to be too strong for Smith in grappling exchanges. Light Heavyweight has a new contender! Our co-main event featured a welterweight bout between ‘Ruthless’ Robbie Lawler and Neil ‘Hatian Sensation’ Magny... in a smart performance, Magny won every round, bloodying Lawler in a dominant victory. Let’s run down the early portion of the event: We ended up starting the night with a women’s opening prelims bout where Mallory Martin had to dig deep to capture a victory, the rising contender battled through adversity to hand Hannah Cifers another Octagon loss via second-round sub, we followed that up with a second ladies fight when Polyana Viana, the Brazilian veteran, scored another finish inside the cage that ended Ultimate Fighter alum Emily Whitmire via first-round sub. Sean Brady kept the submission train rolling as the undefeated welterweight prospect put knockout artist Christian Aguilera to sleep with a powerful second-round guillotine choke. Our fourth sub in a row tonight came when Alex Caceres captured his first three-fight win streak under the UFC banner when “Bruce Leeroy” stopped Octagon newcomer Austin Springer via first-round sub. Rounding things out, bonuses for putting forth POTN efforts went to Mallory Martin and Sean Brady, and FOTN honors went to Ricardo Lamas vs. Bill Algeo. Overall, the now dwindled down ten bout card saw two finishes in Round 1, started off the card with four submissions in a row, had a total of ZERO KO/TKOs, and finished up with six decisions (including the main & co-main)... what a night of fights we have to discuss with you!
