Submit ReviewA mass shooting on South Street; McCormick concedes the GOP primary race for the Senate; WHYY's latest podcast, "March On: The Fight for Pride"; gambling addiction rises in PA
This weekend, Philadelphia’s largest shooting in nearly a decade left 12 injured and three dead on South Street, a typically buzzing area for nightlife, restaurants, entertainment, and small businesses. WHYY Reporter Sophia Schmidt (@tough_schmidt_) joins us to discuss what we know so far about the tragedy.
Republican former senatorial candidate Dave McCormick has conceded the primary race to his opponent, Mehmet Oz. We’ll talk with Franklin and Marshall College expert Stephen Medvic (@stephenmedvic) about predictions for the upcoming general election and if news about democratic challenger John Fetterman’s health could make things difficult.
Then, we discuss alarming trends in gambling addiction, with high demand for sports betting and legalized online casinos making it much easier for people to bet bigger – and more often. As problem gamblers get younger and helpline calls increase, what can be done in our region to help those struggling? Josh Ercole, Executive Director of the Council on Compulsive Gambling of PA, joins us.
We’ll also talk with Billy Penn reporter Michaela Winberg, host of the new WHYY podcast, March On: The Fight for Pride, about her investigation into the downfall of the group running Philly’s biggest LGBTQ celebration, the folks that stepped in to revive the movement, and how the mass shooting impacted Sunday’s march.
