A thrilling adventure novel set in 19th century Mexican California in which Zorro, a mysterious masked hero who champions the oppressed using his swift sword to carve Z's on his enemy's faces. The novel, published in 1924, became a hugely popular silent movie in Hollywood starring Douglas Fairbanks as Zorro,, helping to build their movie-making fame in the twenties, and again in the 40's, when Zorro was redone as a talkie, featuring some great sword fighting scenes between Tyrone Power and Basil Rathbone.. The sword was the chosen weapon in Southern California at that time, despite the fact that the pistol was in frequent use. Zorro became a rotating Disney special every Sunday night in the 50's, and there was no end to the marketing of masks, lunchboxes, rubber swords and the like in those years.
