S. E. Hinton’s book The Outsiders was written in 1967. Francis Ford Coppella made it into a film in 1983. And because of its impact, there’s now a museum in Tulsa dedicated to the movie and stage adaptations underway at small theaters around the country. Journalist Patrick Sauer discusses the story of the novel, the film, and their legacies, and his recent Smithsonian Magazine article called, “S.E. Hinton Is Tired of Talking About ‘The Outsiders.’ No One Else Is.”
