On the previous episode Dan and Mark discussed what made Roger Stern’s Hobgoblin one of the greatest villain debuts of all of Spider-Man history and such a compelling mystery.
But as compelling as that mystery became, it ended with one of the most mystifying and downright confusing reveals in comics history. But that reveal was only the tip of the iceberg. In the Spider-Man creative offices of Marvel, drama, disagreements, and scandal pitted several different creative voices against each other, with their results spilling onto the comic pages. So, on this episode, Dan and Mark are going to unpack all the twists and turns on the pages and behind the scenes that made the reveal of the Hobgoblin’s identity so infamous.
If you want to follow along with us on our journey through the first Hobgoblin identity reveal, we will be discussing events of Amazing Spider-Man #s 259-261, 275-278, 281-289, Spider-Man vs Wolverine, and Web of Spider-Man #s 29-30. Plus, we’ll be including several interviews we’ve done over the years and referencing interviews from a number of publications including, most specifically Christopher Priest’s 2002 blog post “Why I never Discuss Spider-Man”.
