Greetings Sailors! This episode of The Shooting The Breeze Sailing Podcast (STBSP), #138, we chat with Chesapeake Bay Sailor, Round the Americas solo, non stop sailor, and Ocean Research Project founder Matt Rutherford

Matt has been on this podcast many, many times before, almost annually, and we also simulcast it on both of our podcasts (Single Handed Sailing). It is great to get together with him over a few drinks and spout off about all things related to sailing, Ocean Research, and the general state of things that stand in his way of operating a successful, fully funded, proper Ocean/Arctic research operation, utilizing sailing vessels as an exploration platform for scientists at 1 fifth the cost of larger, power vessels.

Currently Matt is fitting out their donated 65ft donated steel Bruce Roberts sailboat for such adventures and research trips for up to 6 scientists and the associated equipment. The plan right now is to launch her in spring of 2022 for a summer trip to the Arctic as part of the SeaBed 2030 Project which involves mapping of the sea floor in uncharted area’s using advanced multi-beam sonar.

We also chat about the book he is working on as well as many other things. Be forewarned, there is recurring talk of the current state of affairs in politics and society, specifically in regards to Qanon, Loose Associations with Reality, Different interpretations of “Facts,” Magical Thinking and why we can’t solve problems or even decide what the problems are so we can go research them and perhaps deal with them, all leading to his frustrations in running the Non-Profit.
