Arrrrrggghhhh! Ahoy my matey’s, All hands Hoay and all Ye Landlubbers, Old Salts, and Sea Dogs, come aboard for our Chat with “Pirates of the Chesapeake Bay” author Dr. Jamie L. H. Goodall (@L_Historienne on twitter). It is a wonderful treatise on piracy in our home waters of the Chesapeake, everything from the “Golden Age” pirates we’ve all heard about, to the local merchants, traders, and thieves that plyed the waters we all love, who found themselves on the wrong side of the law, whichever law that may be. Whether is it was jewels and gold, the proverbial Pirates Treasure, or commodities like Tea, Sugar, Molasses, and Tobacco, or Oyster fields on the wrong side of an imaginary line on a map, or worse, slaves, Pillaging villages, Impressment, or just straight up naval skirmishes, it all happened here in the Chesapeake Bay and is layed out in historical detail in the book. It is a fun read, with enough names and dates to qualify as a historical text, but Jaunty enough to spark the imagination of Swashbuckling and Buccaneering the open seas, creeks, and backwaters of Maryland and Virginia.

It covers everything from the early 1600’s, through the pre-war colonial period, the American Revolution, War of 1812, the Civil War, and the so-called Oyster Wars, up to the death of Berkeley Muse in 1959. Reading the book opened up a Rabbit Hole of wondering what exactly happened between the discovery of the new world in 1492, through Jamestown, the establishment of the Virginia and Maryland colonies, and the beginning of what many consider the Golden Age of Piracy between the 1630’s and the French and Indian Wars in the 1750’s.

You can find the book in person at your local independent bookstore by heading over to Indiebound.
