Submit ReviewIn the span of about 24 hours, the San Francisco Giants have added two solid veteran pitchers to their starting rotation. Neither Ross Stripling nor Sean Manaea, the Giants' two recent signees, have the kind of upside of a Carlos Rodón, the Giants suddenly appear to have a very deep mix of starters. Stripling and Manaea, both signed to identical two-year, $25 million contracts with opt outs after the first year, join Logan Webb, Alex Cobb, Alex Wood, Anthony DeSclafani, and Jakob Junis as rotation options. Kyle Harrison, the Giants' prized young lefty, also figures to factor into the mix early in the season and could replace the upside of a Carlos Rodón.
Nevertheless, SF Giants fans continue to be restless. In a perfect world, they wanted Aaron Judge to join the Giants and Rodón to be brought back. Judge obviously re-signed with the Yankees, and a Rodón reunion appears unlikely, but the Giants have made several solid moves this offseason and it's far from over. If the San Francisco Giants were to sign Carlos Correa, for example, it would be hard to complain too much about their offseason. The Giants are also reportedly still in the mix for another outfielder and bullpen help. The Giants have also been known to be seeking catching upgrades.
Will the SF Giants have to dip into the trade market? It's certainly possible, if they miss out on all of the top free-agent hitters. Free agency was always the most ideal way to add talent for the Giants, since it wouldn't involve parting with prospects. Marco Luciano could be someone the Giants dangle in trade conversations if they don't sign any impact hitters, but he should only be dealt for a true difference maker (such as Shohei Ohtani if he were available and amenable to an extension) or someone with many years of team control (such as Daulton Varsho, for example).
