Celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2018, Die Hard was the movie that has been heralded as one of the greatest action movies of all time, and debatably one of the greatest Christmas movies of all time. Directed by John McTiernan, Die Hard follows NYPD Detective John McClane (Bruce Willis) as he works towards reconciling with his wife his estranged wife Holly Gennero-McClane (Bonnie Bedelia) at her work Christmas party, held at the Nakatomi Plaza in Los Angeles. During the party the building and its occupants are taken hostage by a band of supposed terrorists, led by Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman). The cat-and-mouse games begin as McClane secretly begins taking back control of the building, and putting a stop to Gruber’s plans, with the assistance of LAPD Sargent Al Powell (Reginald VelJohnson). Bringing us memorable one liners like “Ho Ho Ho, I have a machine gun”, “Just a fly in the ointman, Hans. The monkey in the wrench” and “Yippee Ki-Yay, Motherf*cker!”, Die Hard set a new bar for action movies.
