Back in the 1960s and 1970s, the Chicago Outfit had a loyal soldier named Paul Shiro. The guys called him “The Indian” because he had facial features like a Native American. This man was a killer. I once did a story on four businessmen who were all killed with a gun firing .22 caliber bullets, and they were all killed inside one elevator. Paulie Shiro was the chief suspect when he moved to Phoenix to be the Outfit’s representative and work with Tony Spilotro in Las Vegas. When a casino employee named Jay Vandermark threatened the Las Vegas skim operation, the Outfit dispatched a hit team to murder Vandermark. A Chicago mob associate named Emil Vaca “set up” Vandermark. Later, the Outfit became worried that Vaca might turn into a witness. Paul Shiro helped Nick Calabrese murder Emil Vaca. When Nick Calabrese and his nephew Frank Calabrse Jr. became witnesses in the 2007 Family Secrets trial, they put Shiro in prison. He has been trying to get out on compassionate leave for a couple of years because of Covid-19. Finally, after a judge turned him down, Shiro has reached the time he can be released to a halfway house and will be completely free next year. Will Shiro return to his old criminal activities? Will Shiro return to Chicago or Phoenix? Will Paul Shiro try to find Nick Calabrese or Frank Calabrese Jr. and take revenge?
