Submit ReviewNYC Winter Jazzfest kicks of its 20th season today, with shows across New York City slated over the next week. This weekend, the festival will put on two events dedicated to the historic Brooklyn Black cultural center, The East. On Saturday, a panel will discuss The East's musical legacy. On Sunday, the Crown Hill Theatre will host "A Night at the East," a concert featuring veteran musicians like Gary Bartz and Billy Hart, as well as later generation musicians like Shabaka, Moor Mother, and Luke Stewart. We discuss the events with Basir Mchawi, a former magazine editor for The East, and Marcus Moore, who co-curated the concert with Jazzfest founder Brice Rosenbloom. Stewart and his Irreversible Entanglements bandmates Aquiles Navarro and Tcheser Holmes also join to perform live in the studio.
