On today's Locked on Cavs Chris Manning and Evan Dammarell discuss Koby Altman's future with the team, Jarrett Allen's possible contract extension, and the return of the NBA's Summer League.
Here are some bullet points:
- To be frank, everyone is on the hot seat in Cleveland while Dan Gilbert is the owner - not just Koby Altman. If Michigan State's Tom Izzo called tomorrow and said he wanted to coach the Cavs, Gilbert would fire J.B. Bickerstaff on the spot and hire Izzo. This is even though Bickerstaff has performed well this year as head coach for the Cavs.
- It would be a disservice to this team, and its fans, to fire Altman this offseason. Cleveland has so many questions about the future of their roster and it would send everything back to square one if they fired Altman. Kevin Love's future. Collin Sexton and Jarrett Allen's contract extensions. The 2021 NBA Draft. There is so much on the line this offseason for the Cavs and they cannot afford to fire Altman at this point. Instead, they should have him on a shorter leash next season.
- How much money Cleveland is willing to commit to Jarrett Allen this offseason will be a huge decision as well. It is reported that Allen could receive a 5-year, $100 million contract to keep him in Cleveland. Due to how talented he is on both ends of the floor, Allen is worth that money. But, the Cavs should not go above that price tag.
- If the Cavs were to get Evan Mobley in the 2021 NBA Draft, it would change things on the Allen front to the point where Cleveland should look to trade him.
- Finally, of the young core four of the Cavs, none of them are really worth a maximum level contract no matter who they are.
- It has been reported that the annual Las Vegas Summer League will be back this offseason. While Isaac Okoro probably won't play, there will be plenty of opportunities for the Cavs to develop key young pieces like Lamar Stevens, Brodric Thomas, Mfiondu Kabengele, and more.
