The town was supposed to be a UN protected safe haven for Bosnian Muslims who had been targeted in a campaign of ethnic cleansing by Bosnian Serbs. But UN troops failed to protect the civilians, and over eight thousand people were killed. The deaths of civilians galvanised the US into action. President Bill Clinton launched unilateral US strikes against Serbian forces.
