Motivated reasoning is a circular information processing pattern where we notice and seek out evidence that confirms our beliefs and we rarely challenge the validity of that confirming evidence. On top of that we ignore or work hard to actively discredit information contradicting our belief. In motivated reasoning, we are stuck in a loop where we never learn or become more accurate in our thinking. This concept is from the book “Thinking in Bets” by Annie Duke, an American professional poker player, author, and decision strategist. She holds a World Series of Poker gold bracelet from 2004 and used to be the leading money winner among women in WSOP history. Our internet experience, especially on social media, encourages motivated reasoning (and it's not a good thing).
