We have a great discussion with the leading voice for smartphone movie making in Russia, Maxim Mussel. He’s made three feature films with smartphones and launched the only festival for mobile films in Russia.

Incredibly, Maxim was inspired when he made a short film which won an award at the International Mobile Film Festival in San Diego, California in 2014. He was so impressed with the festival in San Diego that he went all in on smartphone filmmaking. He launched the Filmmaker’s International Festival about four years ago. He’s written a book and has been teaching mobile filmmaking.

What we discuss:

* How the pandemic affected both our festivals * Storytelling in film * Developing your story before shooting * Teaching filmmaking for mobile * The need for good experienced actors in mobile filmmaking * Submissions deadlines for their festival * Special effects in mobile films, does it work? * The many instructors for mobile filmmaking today * Selling your mobile film

Smartphone filmmaking was not heard of in Russia a few years ago but Maxim Mussel has changed that. There’s more to the story than making three feature films with the smartphone camera.
