Spiritfarer is described by its developer, Thunder Lotus Games, as "a cozy management game about dying." Charon, the legendary ferryman who takes departed souls across the River Styx, gives his duties to young Stella, who collects passengers and does all she can to fulfill their final wishes or long-time desires so they can travel to the afterlife in peace. Soundtrack composer Max LL says the ideas the developers shared with him about how their goal was to make a game in which death can become a comfortable topic, and connecting with unforgettable characters immediately hooked him. Max says many of the memorable characters Stella collects on her ever-expanding ship were inspired by family members and friends of the developers of the team, which gives them very three-dimentional personalities. The character of Alice has a special resonance with Max, and he says being able to take her to the Winter Village she always dreamed of visiting, and writing the music for that experience was
