When New Zealand's Coalition government came to power in November 2023, it pledged enact a review of the Treaty of Waitangi, which is considered to be New Zealand's founding document.

Some are concerned the government's planned changes lead to a roll-back of Māori rights, but New Zealand's Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peter's says that's not the case, and they want to change the "misinterpretation" of the Treaty.
